must red for serious distance runners and coaches

I found this book shortly after it was published and feel it is among the most insightful resources available addressing the mental aspects of distance racing or as the arthur calls it the "Psychological Challenge in Distance Racing". I would suggest that every serious distance coach and runner would agree that distance racing is a least a 50/50 mental/physical challenge. This text will help you understand what is needed to insure all the hard physical work done in preparation for racing is exhibited on race day.

An excellent book for the intensely commited young (college through mid-30's) runner. Anyone else would need to reduce both the number and possibly the intensity of the workouts. If you're a mid-pack runner or wish to complete marathons, this book would be of little value to you. If on the other hand you think of 20 x 400 as a normal workout during the track phase of the season, consider adding it to your library.

The Magnum Opus of Football Clock Management

Homer Smith is well known and respected as an offensive guru and innovative thinker. What he has given coaches with "The Complete Handbook of Clock Management," however, may be the single most important work he has ever written on the great game of football.

Coach Smith lays out his system of clock managment for coaches at all levels. Although he assumes that playcalling will be done from a press box, his methods are applicable to every level of the game, from youth football to the NFL.

Every facet of clock management, whether behind or ahead, is covered in detail. His systematic approach to the problem involves taking stock, choosing tools, and getting the difficult job of clock management done right.

Highest recommendation.

A funny, extremely useful book for businesses of all sizes.

This book was fun to read and was filled with good suggestions and ideas for using software I already had to do just about everything I need to do in my office. I had no idea that I could create my own business cards in Word, or all the stuff I can do with PowerPoint to make presentations. The chapters on marketing were great, and I also really enjoyed the first couple of chapters on buying computers and software - I learned a lot. I recommend this book to anyone with an office, and to both large and small businesses. There are great tips for saving time and money, and everyone needs to do that these days! I'll definitely buy any book that Laurie Ulrich writes, certainly anything on business and software topics, she really knows her stuff.

Conan Doyle, Detective: The True Crimes Investigated by the Creator of Sherlock Holmes

Outstanding True Crime Book

Peter Costello's Conan Doyle: Detective is one of the most fascinating true crime books published in the 21st Century. Like his fictional creation, Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a detective.

However, Doyle was strictly an amateur and many of his cases, such as that of Jack the Ripper, were approached as an armchair detective who based his theories more from newspaper accounts and gossip rather than from first hand investigation.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may have been a disappointment as a would be detective, but this absorbing, well written book is anything but a disappointment.

Most recommended.

A testimony to the principles of this text
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-07
Upon graduation from Georgia Tech's building construction program in 1982, I went to work for Nick Ganaway. One of the many reasons I selected his company was his obvious knowledge of business. Even more, I appreciated the motivation he placed in us (and himself) to always become better as contractors and as businessmen. We met frequently to "log in" new discoveries, efficiencies, risks, and methods of profitability that he had wisely accumulated for us. As I "ventured out" into the world and developed my own business with very little experience, I quickly noticed that although I was a "great" project manager that running a construction company was an entirely different issue. For example, do you understand the unique requirements of the construction firm owner? Terms in the project owner's construction agreement that can unfairly shift major risk onto your plate and what to do about them? How to ensure that you get paid for change orders? What to do when hard times suddenly strike (and they will)? After 25 years of experience in operating a commercial construction company, Mr. Ganaway explains chapter-by-chapter these and every other risk area you must manage if you are going to survive in construction. I know these explanations well as they ring in my mind from discussions with Mr. Ganaway concerning my very first projects and through calling for help with running my own construction business. You will feel like you're having these same discussions with him as you read this book. Every contractor, project manager, and construction student should read it. Today I use this very text to teach our students at Georgia Tech's building construction program how to run a business, as well as consulting in the same area. His principles work!

An added bonus to this text is the final chapter, where Mr. Ganaway makes the case for specializing in chain store construction. To "outsiders" who have not reviewed this market segment, I think you will be surprised at the benefits. If you are not already specializing in a niche market, this chapter is sure to start you thinking about it.
