If your planing to run a marathon is would be one of the best books you'll read for training. Training is very important because with out training what would be the point of running. This book will give u tips on running, eating, keeping track of your running, how to set little goals, and how impotant it is to finish. A marathon is not some thing you do when you wake up in the morning. You have to training consistently.

The concept of this book was very appealing to me. Not only does the book take you through a very simple approach to fitness for "busy" people, it seems to be a perfect program for the average person who doesn't enjoy "working out". What can be easier than a program that teaches you to run, but if you are too tired; walk! This program teaches you to be the judge of your own progress. I liked the way author, Sue Ward, told some success stories of "average" people who followed the program and what a thrill it was for them to achieve their goals. The section on stretching and exercising was very easy to follow with just the right combination of pictures and words. This book combines a total fitness guideline (including eating) that I belive is simple to follow and easy to stick with. Especially, for someone who isn't a "super" athlete.

Finally an exercise book for everyone!

Sue Ward has written a book that can get anyone up off the couch and out the door to get active. Age doesn't matter. Whether a person wants to develop his or her own walking program, or whether someone wants to become a marathon runner, this book works equally well. "Just Cruising--Simple Fitness for Busy People" is the best motivator and guideline for fitness that we have seen.

Sue Ward's philosophy of exercise and healthy eating mirror our own. In our cookbook, we teach people how to eat healthy food and how to get active. There are no "magic bullets" that will make someone healthy; it's up to the individual to take action. That doesn't mean that exercise and healthy cooking need to be difficult chores. "Just Cruising" shows people the easy way to get fit. Thanks, Sue.

This book helped to take the "Busy" out of my workout!

This is a very well written approach to the common sense of staying fit. Not only did it give me a simple and efffective program to follow but, Sue wrote it in a way that made me feel like she was right there with me. Whenever I needed a lift , I just went back to chapter 1 and "Joyce". The pressure is off! Enjoy this book.

Easy to read and simple to follow.

This book is truly inspiring. I am an avid exerciser but never ran a marathon. I have cycled done step aerobics, weight trained, and swam at my health club. This book has gotten me to hit the pavement outside and enjoy another form of exercise. All of the warm up exercises can be used for any form of exercises even walking.

This is a fantastic story. It sparks children and adults (I'm 53!) the imagination and creativity that will help make the world a more beautiful place. I hence started to write my own children's stories. Amy Tan is my inspiration, and I hope she becomes yours.

I am the mother of 2 boys and have little knowledge of "girl" books. I bought this book for 2 little girls ages 4 and 5. The parents of each girl said their daughters were thrilled with the book and asked that it be read to them twice the day the book arrived. I bought the book because I love Amy Tan's novels and assumed that a child's book would be just as engaging. Amy Tan's story and the beautiful illustrations did not let me down.

The most exquisitely illustrated book I've ever owned! A fun, fictitious way to describe how white siamese kittens get their colors.
It's a bit long for a bed time story, but really fun! Kids ages 8 or 9 and up may be able to read it themselves, but the beginners may have a hard time.

Beautifully written and illustrated book!

I've read Amy Tan's "Joy Luck Club" and "Kitchen God's Wife" and had no idea that she's a wonderful children's author as well. I learned about this book from watching the same titled PBS series. The series is cute for kids, but the book is a wonderful story, rich in history and beautifully illustrated. Tan is a gifted writer that children and adults can appreciate.

5 Stars as a running/marathon book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-12
Yessiree, I give it 5 stars as a running book. I was finding I was docking some books and CDs; because I approached it like, is it perfect enough to get the highest rating like a Shakespeare play or a symphony?

I go with the genre it belongs too; and too, I'd say those who have had substance abuse/alcohol problems would find it inspiring too; cause Dick became addicted to pain killers; and did some things; that were indeed wrong.

It's a good book for athletes, cause Dick's body did start to break down some; even away from his being prone to some bad accidents. It makes me ponder, we hear about so many athletes who later end up being not in the best shape because of their sports career, say like Larry Bird. It makes you think, it's great to run that great Boston Marathon in '82; but is it worth it in the long run.

I agree, the book may have minor blemishes, might be choppy in parts in the latter half of the book, but it shouldn't keep anyone from reading it, indeed, some of this could have been expanded on.

It's a good book, kind of for your couples too; I mean, I admire his wife, Maureen, for staying with Dick; for her care, love and also standing up to him some.

I definitely, would like to read "Duel in the Sun" to continue reading on Mr. Beardsley, really, along with his rival at the Boston Marathon, Alberto Salazar and along with "Pre" Prefontaine himself; there certainly is more to read on these famous track runners from America.

As Dean Karnazes' book UltraMarathon Man is getting to be compulsory reading for Greeks (but not only them of course), I think Minnesotans and those from the surrounding areas should read this one, especially if they are interested in the sport.

Beardsley reminds me a bit of the great American cyclist from the turn of the century (meaning near 1900) Major Taylor, in that his glory descended into lows.

After going through this book, I am still contemplating parts of it and how we and history will see Dick, but I definitely would wish him and his family the best. Some parts of it, really are astonishing; and it is astonishing as a whole. He certainly has given a lot to the Marathon.

This book is about the life of a runner named Dick Beardsley. It talks about his life goals in running and how he got into a bad habbit of using pain killers. The book takes place in the mainland, and not in a certain place because he traveled a lot to race. See i am a runner so i like the book because it gave me the motivation to go on when the going gets tough. If i compare this book to other book i would say it is not the best running book i have read but, it is better than the other types of books i have read. I think if you are a runner you will really like the book cause it teaches you to be tough in a race and some pointers on how to run marathons. If you do not run i dont think you will have a strong liking with this book. It can get kind of boring a some parts, but the parts that tell about his races really made me want to read on, so if you are a runner i think this book is better for you than if you are not a runner. So be a runner!

Rob Kutner, writer for the Daily Show, sets forth to humor us with this text on how to make the best of times for the end of times. You learn how to deal with the apocalypse and aftermath but don't let it drag you down, here's how you can make the best of things. He covers topics from dressing, home defense, new foods to try (mmm rock soup), dating & repopulating, recreational activities, and more. Overall, there are some fairly funny parts but I didn't find it laugh-out-loud funny, but rather some good strong smirks. Some jokes got a bit repetitive and even as a humor book it lacked some fleshing out in areas that would have improved the text. Worth reading and the illustrations are equally amusing. There are bits that you'll miss the first time through so it is certainly re-readable.

Oh man, too funny!

Do you fear the end of the world? Rob Kutner's new book makes it seem like it will be as fun as a trip to Disneyland!

Apocalpyse How presents many ways that the world as we know it might end: nuclear holocaust, robot revolt (a la Flight Of The Conchords' song "The Humans Are Dead"), alien invasion, global warming. And it gives some really funny advice about how we can not just survive, but thrive in the new world order.

There are perhaps one too many references to cannibalism for my taste, but Kutner's clever writing and sharp wit makes up for it. My favorite part was the "Fun & Games" chapter near the end of the book.

The book does not give enough credit to illustrator Joshua McDonnell. His drawings, photographs and collages are superb, and are as strong of a presence as the writing itself.

The end comes too soon.

You'll regret the coming of the end of "Apocalypse How" almost as much as you'll regret the coming of the end of the actual world (next week). Fortunately, the book is packed with so much verbal and visual humor, you'll need to read it at least twice to wring all the laughs from it... much as you'll want to wring all the potable, nutritious juices from whatever minimally-irradiated flora, fauna, and Frankenfoods you can find when the end-times arrive. You'll want to read the acknowledgments three times.

This is the way the world ends, not with a bang...but a howl of laughter! Who knew that the Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse is a brilliant satirist by the name of Rob Kutner? With a gift of prophecy that Cassandra would envy and the swiftness of a Sidewinder missile, Kutner has beaten the likes of those esteemed self-help gurus Heloise, Bob Vila, Dr. Phil, Martha Stewart, Dear Abby, et al. in fulfilling an unrecognized need: an ironic handbook for coping with nearly all aspects of the Last Days. "Apocalypse How" is highly entertaining and may even be useful. I liked it so much I bought copies for my family and closest friends.

My brother advised me to read this book as he knows the author via sports. As I love to read, I was happy to oblige him just to see what he was talking about. I was pleasantly surprised to find a book that captured my interest from the first page! The author's style is easy to read and well done, and his sense of humor and detail appreciated by me. The story of the past and present Joshua Chamberlains blended together well and I was entranced.
Maybe I loved this book because I'm from a small town in Upper Michigan, and my dad was a Civil War buff and took us to battlefields and made history come alive with his stories.
Maybe I liked it because my brother was a basketball star and our small town team went to the state finals in the late 60's against those Detroit teams and won!
Maybe I liked it because I have run 10ks and walked a marathon and know what that's like.
Maybe I liked it because I read a lot and can recognize a good author and tale when I read it.
Maybe I have told a lot of others about it because I feel it's a "sleeper" and a good read!
Thank you Tim V for a great tale and enjoyable read!

This book caught my attention being a marathon runner and a Civil War buff. Having both together seemed too good to be true. Not entirely what I expected but certainly not a disappointment either. I found myself focusing more on the non-running aspects of the book, but was still acutely aware of Mr. Wagoner's description of the marathon that were unique and descriptive. A smart, smooth use of multiple times enabled me to correlate the main characters life with his progression through the marathon which I found very clever. Surprisingly so, this book made me feel like a teenager again. I'm not a love story type of guy, but I would highly recommend this book. Made me feel good about people again.

I thought of Katherine's story as I ran my marathon and used it to make me stronger all summer long. Wow, I loved this book. I remember reading an excerpt from it somewhere online several months ago and I was so engrossed in it that I finally had to buy the book recently. And I was not disappointed - the entire book was incredibly easy and engaging to read. The only minor exception was that the last third of the book kind of got away from what made the book so interesting the first 2/3, but overall I would still give the book five stars without a thought. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed reading a book as much as I did this one.

This was hands down one of the most inspiring running books I've ever read. Kathrine's foresight into the sport of running amazes me - we can thank her not only for bringing the women's marathon to the 1984 Olympic games but also for today's modern marathon "comforts" that didn't exist when she first hit the streets of Boston.
I read this while training for a marathon and her story kept me going during those long and painful runs. This book is a must-read for any runner, male or female.

a great story of life with autism

Review Date: 2007-09-23
This is a great story of what it's like to live, day to day with autism. I prefer this type of book to the type in which parents take credit for their children's miraculous recoveries. This book struck a chord with me. It feels real and true, and is not preachy. This father is an advocate for his son. These parents choose to home school their son rather than put him in a placement that they feel would not be the right fit for him or, in some cases of places they toured, places that would be harmful to him. I wish I had read this book before we accepted services from our local school district, which our son's speech therapist later called the worst program she'd ever seen. The wrong services are better than no services at all. These parents read their son's behavior and cues and persevere to find the best services for him. This book shows that people affected by autism are capaple of forming connections with others. I am hoping for a sequel.

Faith, hope, courage, easy words to say ,even easier to aspire to, but Running With Walker tells of a family who lives these ideals as a matter of course.I read this book ,or rather devoured it, in a day and a half, its' story as compelling, its' characters as real as any best-selling novel.Running With Walker far exceeds the specifics of a family coping with an autistic child. The humor, warmth and some-times painful honesty of the fathers' narrative, the mom's undaunting hope and determination, the younger brother Davy's compassion and love in the midst of an unusual and difficult situation can speak to any of us in a heartfelt and profound way.
Walker, as the focus of the story,is revealed as a joyous , energetic and loving human being who happens to be autistic.Because his family sees the real boy and not the autistic label, we can too , and join the Hughes'in their struggle to provide a satisfying and fulfilling life for both their sons and each other.I know I will reread this book many times for its' insight and uplifting message and recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who appreciates a true story about family love.

Care providers in Early Childhood and Developmental Delay need to see this book, for their own professional good. The author is an incredibly perceptive parent. He vividly draws the story of his son's experiences in the hands of a range of professionals. In doing so, Hughes shines a hard light on what appear to be the worst and best possible practices in today's arena. His descriptions elicit gasps -- of consternation or admiration -- page after page. Heart-rending frankness here is lightened by a saving sense of humor. As a fellow parent of a special-needs child, I am left in awe.

As I read this memoir-I was struck by the intelligence and compassion that informs it. Of course-it is about a family with an autistic child. But it is also filled with insight and practical wisdom-about parenting and loving and guiding and coping and persevering. A superbly crafted book, "Running With Walker" is perceptive, imaginative, witty, poignant, humorous-all at the same time. Hughes has created remarkable portraits-not to be missed-of his family-even his city-and especially-of himself.

I began reading "Running With Walker" after brunch one Sunday, and didn't put it down until I finished it later that evening. I hope that peple don't make the assumption, as I did at first, that this is a "medical" book about an illness. This is no more a book about autism than "The Da Vinci Code" is a book about art. This is a story about a family and how they used thier stregnth and love for one another help them to overcome adversity. Hughes puts such a lighthearted, often humorous spin on events that many would have a hard time seeing the silver lining in, and you walk away from his story feeling that you have new good friends in the Hughes Family.

Behind the uncontrolled New York quipping and sitcom stereotyping --- if the authors interviewed anyone thoughtful, considerate of the other party, much less introspective or, indeed, sad, it seems they left such feelings out --- there's actually a book here containing sound advice, judgment, and commiseration.

*Hot* can be recommended for anyone in the predicament, provided you can get past the shtick.

Divorce is probably one of the most traumatic events in a person's life: to have to separate from the one person that you have shared a serious amount of time and intimacies with and possibly had children with, is all about having to change habits, to reinvent oneself. The authors have managed to face this trauma with Humor (with a capital "H"), to get up after they were down, to face life head-on, and with laughter. I admire their strength, their fighting spirit. I know it was not easy, but "Still Hot" makes it look like they could handle anything - it's a terrific book, deep, human and fun. Enjoy.

While in the midst of a divorce reading about it could seem like adding insult to injury. The authors here speak to women at their most vulnerable moment with a touch of humor and understanding that allows readers to open up and be able to take in some of the insight and advice the authors generously share. They just make you laugh hysterically, nodding your head at the truisms you're reading, and it doesn't matter a whit if you've never been divorced or even married for that matter. I don't think there's anyone who won't relate to this great book. It's not read it and weep. It's read it and laugh 'til tears stream down your face.

I bought this CD for the yoga nidra track, and I've ended up loving both discs. Shiva Rea does a fantastic job with different ways to relax and calm down, including pranayama. I use this CD nearly every day, and it really helps for calming down for a good night's sleep.

I am amazed by the tranquility and relaxation I enjoyed after following the Yoga nidra instructions. Believe me, the background music, the soft voice of Shiva and the soothing instructions will put you in a totally relaxing mood and the entire body, mind and spirit gets rejuvenated. It is worth buying the CD for this track alone.

This CD set is a must for anyone handling stress in their life. And who among us is not? There is only so much room in anyone's budget for therapists, massages, etc. At some point we have to use our own devices to deal with stress on a regular daily basis, or succumb to the ills it causes.

Shiva Rea comes to the rescue with this jewel of a CD set. It has been adequately described, I'll just add that the Chandra Namaskar (moon salutations) on Disc 1 are gentle and accessible to most people. There is a booklet included that describes the asanas (positions). Most of the material offered involves the motion of your mind rather than body. Light a candle, unplug the phone, make a nest with some blankets rolled under your knees and over you, and indulge in Disc 2 with its invocation, assortment of guided Savasanas, and healing Yoga Nidra. Then head straight to bed for a lovely night's sleep without the aid of pharmaceuticals. Highly recommended.

I'm new to whole world of yoga and decided to purchase this CD collection based on amazon reviews. I use this CD everyday for meditation and relaxation. Shiva Rea has a very soothing voice with beautiful music in the back ground to accompany her. If you are looking for a very well rounded collection, this is a good bet. Once again, I'm always so pleased with Amazon - they're so helpful in making an informed decision on new purchases!

The greatest, most awesome book I ever purchased!

This book is absolutely amazing! I have never owned another book matching the caliber of this masterpiece. I don't think you even have to be a Frank Lloyd lover to appreciate this book. It is for everyone who can appreciate art, architecture, and learning through various ways about the genius of Wright. The book box cover, the carefully laid out plans and packets in the book illustrating the drafting and the various buildings this man created is fun and exciting. The CD is complementary in that it captures the essence of this man whose ego was the size of his largest creations----albeit he has every right to think himself the best architect who lived in the 19th and 20th centuries. If he were still with us, he would include the 21st century as a categorical imperative that he is/was the greatest architect of all time. Oh what a character he was, and oh what an absolute mind he beheld---and as genius of his craft he had all the right to be self righteous, egotistical and unapologetic. This is a downright amazing book. I am buying two, one to keep in perfect condition and the other to immerse myself in and learn and teach and adore. I will probably buy even more of this particular book as gifts--whether the person has no idea who FLW is or if they are professional architects themselves, all will be educated and enamored by it and it's accompaning accessories.

Beautiful compilation!

I saw this book and its inserts while browsing in the gift shop at Taliesin West. I couldn't buy it at that time because I didn't have any room to spare in my luggage for our flight home. I found it for a good price on Amazon, though, and ordered it as soon as I returned home. It's a beautiful book, with interesting text. The inserts, though, are what sold me on this book. The reproductions of correspondence, sketches and plans are so well done that some of them look original and authentic. It's a great addition to my library of books relating to Frank Lloyd Wright.

This is a spectacular value - it gives an intimate glimpse into the life of a genius at work - can't imagine a better way to do it. And the price is way to low for the value received.

Un buon libro in cui รจ racchiuso l'essenziale. Molto curato e fuori dal comune per la ricchezza di particolari. Un'ottima idea regalo per chi vuole avvicinarsi alle opere di Frank Lloyd Wright.

As an Architect student, I love this book. I show all my friends how a real great mind works. Wright is my favorite architect, so when I was this it was a given ofr me to buy it. I highly suggest checking your local book store first, because I bought this EXACT one for 13 dollars.
