A very good autobiography, infact the best I have ever read. Goes through his life in detail. From Aliquippa to Pitt to Dallas and Denver and all the mishaps and action that happened in these places. It also gives good growing up details and how it was like in family. A very exquisite book.

One of the all time great running backs in the NFL Tony Dorsett leaves nothing to the imagination as he describes the his life from childhood, to the University of Pittsburgh, to the Dallas Cowboys and the end of his career with the Denver Broncos. A must read to learn about all the difficulties of being in the spotlight. One of the best books I have read.

What more needs to be said about a man who can make a swarm of mosquitoes disappear by simply saying "These mosquitoes have to go." I was there, a witness to the feat.

Ranging from the amusing to the sublime, Jeremy does an excellent job reconciling topics that might, at first glance, seem to have nothing to due with each other. Consistently entertaining and eminently readable, Running Towards the Bomb is an excellent compendium of essays for those with an open mind and a keen interest in 'what is going on' behind the scenes of reality.

I have been using the Purdy tables for 20 years. There is no more reliable formula for predicting running performance and designing the appropriate workouts. I pull out this book at least 2 or 3 times a week during track and cross country seasons. It is pretty incredible that 20 years later the formula still works.

The guide to pacing

Plenty of us jog or run. But how do you train so that you can improve? Or get ready for a race? Or simply measure your performance?

This book tells all! Types of workouts. Training elements, including the concept of interval running. Training programs for beginners, for sprinters, for long sprinters, for middle-distance runners, and for long distance runners. Heart rate recovery. It's great.

At the end are the performance rating tables, and they are absolutely special. You can see what your performance is worth, and compare completely different distances. For example, to get 100 points, you need to run a 59:19 10K or 15:54 3K or an 81.5 400 meters. Or a 4:44 marathon! To get 500 points, you need to run 39:58.7 in the 10K or 60.3 in the 400 meters. To get 1150 points, all you need is a 2:01:29 marathon, or a 26:08 10K (no, these are not typos), or a 42.4 in the 400 meters, or a 9.45 in the 100 meters. If any of you folks out there can do this, um, I think you have some potential in track!

Yes, this obscure volume is the right book to get.

Running With Dillinger: The Story of Red Hamilton and Other Forgotten Canadian Outlaws

A northern exposure of crime

Review Date: 2008-11-15
Edward Butts has written many remarkable books about Canadian criminals. "Pirates and Outlaws of Canada", "She Dared", and "Outlaws of the Lakes" all demonstrate his gift for uncovering fantastic yet true stories about Canadian outlaws and their deeds, and "Running With Dillinger" does not derail his track record in the slightest.

The story of John 'Red' Hamilton, the only Canadian-born member of the Dillinger gang, takes its place beside chapters dedicated to the Power Gang of colonial Newfoundland, counterfeiter extraordinaire Edwin Johnson, and 'Bloody Jack' Krafchenko, of whom the author states with some justification, "Had Krafchenko been an American desperado, there would quite likely be at least one Hollywood film based on his exploits."

You don't have to be Canadian to enjoy this book. Criminal behaviour is rarely restricted by geography, and anyone who relishes good true crime tales should pick up this book.

A look at the darker side of Canada

No one thinks of Canada and thinks of Outlaws - it may be a testament to the country, but it would be wrong to say they are without them. "Running with Dillinger: The Story of Red Hamilton and Other Forgotten Canadian Outlaws" is the follow up to "The Desperate Ones: Forgotten Canadian Outlaws" - a look at the darker side of Canada, those who made their living opposing the law enforcement and through nefarious means. Of particular note to those who must have a link to American crime in their Canadian crime book is Red Hamilton - a long time member of the Dillinger gang, and notorious gangster in his own right. "Running with Dillinger: The Story of Red Hamilton and Other Forgotten Canadian Outlaws" is a must for any Canadian history collection who wants a look at Canada's famous lawbreakers and hoodlums - and for anyone who wants to see the Maple Leaf in a different light.

Essential Reading From The Distance Guru

Review Date: 2008-09-21
The theories of Arthur Lydiard are essential reading for runners at all age levels and abilities.

His use of base (endurance) training, followed by phase work of strength, anaerobic and anaerobic-taper is geared to peaking a runner for maximum performance in a major event.

But it's through the endurance training phase where he may be most famous on the roads and trails; it set a foundation which created the running "boom" in the 1970s in the United States and popularized the sport in other nations as a means to achieve fitness.

Lydiard is a coaching icon and his theories will live on as long as a runner is tying the shoe laces and getting ready for a distance jaunt.

I read this book while raising a litter of foxes, the author's insights into fox society was very helpful. Many things that he related I either had experienced or came upon later. This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in knowing more about foxes and will dispell many of the things that we thought were true of fox behaviour.

My Preferred Book for Operations SPC Training
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-06
"Running Your Machines with SPC" is the book I recommend for both new and 'sustainment' operations SPC training.

Too often, operations personnel have been introduced to charting methods from a quality or engineering perspective, and not from a tactical operations point of view. A quality perspective often emphasizes product disposition, and an engineering perspective usually focuses on capability issues.

This book clearly illustrates the operations role of SPC and the use of control charts for rapid and effective `hour-by-hour' tactical decision-making.

It has joined a whole shelf full of books that range from how to Simplify all the way to raising back yard livestock. Education and information is the key to change and I feel that I have taken the first step in changing my life for the better.

A Call for Green Patriotism
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-05
In Safe Trip to Eden, the author introduces an interesting concept called Green Patriotism, which is the call to Americans to protect our environment because it will ultimately strengthen our national security. He takes us on a trip across America and beyond (to the rainforest in Costa Rica, the San Juan Islands, the Adirondacks, etc.) and each place we learn something new about our current environmental state of affairs - the problems, what is being done by environmentalists to correct them, and how we can make choices in our own lives to support the solutions.

The author emphasizes our power as consumers in a capitalistic culture -that each of our purchase decisions is like casting a vote. He also makes the point that environmentalism is not a partisan issue. While it has been associated with liberals, he gives a history of Republicans and environmentalism in chapter 9.

The book is extremely comprehensive in that it discusses the presence of petrochemical toxins in food and home products, the evolving green car industry, a facinating Pentagon risk assessment report on global warming, natural medicine, the treatment of livestock, negative effects of underpricing in the marketplace, how to maintain a sustainable forest, and much more.

Overall, it's a facinating, empowing and very educating read. I highly recommend it!

This book, like all others from this now deceased author were translated from French in the 1980's from memoirs that recently became public. Anne Marie's books have been translated into many many languages and are timeless in their appeal and eroticism. Based mainly on the authors', or her friends real life, and somewhat embellished experiences, I understand that she wrote these books for her own personal erotic gratification. What a marvellous stroke of luck that many of the memoirs have come to light for us to enjoy.

Most, if not all of the authors books deal with games of life and love that the decadent wealthly played incessantly in Paris during the 1920's. The theme of many of the stories seem to invariably involve beutifull and wealthy society women, which, I must say, pretty well have the morals of alley cats, and are usually on the hunt for men and erotic diversions. For the hunt to be enjoyable, the hunted should usually not be aware of the game and feel that he is the master of his own destiny, what a laugh .... most of the men really don't know what had hit them though they would be lax in admitting to themselves that they were used and abused at will .....

In Scandale D'Amour, we find two very similar books titled 'Mystere D'Amour' which is 320 pages and 'Folies D'Amour' which is 248 pages in length.

Both books are a compendium of short stories each with its own plot, characters and delicious stories of erotic seduction and submission. The author has an innate knack for allowing the reader to quickly identify with one or another of the characters in each story making one feel as though you are a vicarious participant. BTW Anna Marie Villafranche's prose and descriptions of the love scenes can span 10 to 20 pages as she is a master in drawing out those delicious sinfull moments. It's not the hump and bump of many of our contemporary authors ....

I had some trouble finding this book and I can assure you it's not leaving my little library of erotic masterpieces any time soon .....
