This was one of the best books that I have read in a long while. I couldn't put it down. I had to know what Justin Gates was up to and what was going to happen to Cassandra. I read it straight through without stopping. The intensity of this book is amazing. Charlotte does an amazing job in making the characters come to life. She also has a way of keeping the reader wanting more. I hope that all who read this book will come away with a new sense of the end times. I give this book a 5 star rating.

Last Saturday, I sat with a coffee on a bench outside Quatermaine's and enjoyed about an hour and a half of reading Running on Plenty. That morning break was followed by regular respites of reading time during the following week. I confess to have skipped around and not even attempted to read front to back. Not my way. Yet, it didn't take long for me to run out of pages that had none of my highlighted markings on it.

This book is a solid contribution to my professional and personal life. The visuals are friendly and effective -- the key points, inspirational quotes, road to renewal signs, spaciousness, tailor-made graphics, soulful writing, practicality, and page after loving page of simple wisdom -- all satisfying and nourishing.

I appreciated how this book began, with both authors telling personal stories of learning first-hand about the importance of balance and renewal. Each story was poignant and something that anyone can identify with, I would imagine. It's a friendly, friendly book -- from colors to typeface to spacing to mixing of many inspirational and helpful lines from endless sources & resources. There is so much good work & research supporting what has been assembled and written, which is immediately apparent to the reader, that it had the effect of relaxing me --I knew I was in good hands, and that I was being enriched in ways that I needed.

One final observation that has stayed with me...when I closed the book and went to my car to drive home, and on the way home I noticed a very good, rich, dynamic energy in my solar plexus. It wasn't the caffeine because I'm strictly on decaf now. So, I know it was the stirring from the tone and gentle massaging of the stories, insights, resonance, and spirit of your book. That was a wonderful gift. It surprised me to have had an effect on my energy simply from the reading. I think that happens in the presence of beauty, goodness, and truth, which has been masterfully conveyed and honored.

This book has become an important companion, helping me to care for myself so that I can care more effectively for others.

Running on Premium Fuel is about thoughtful eating. Rather than deprivation and starvation, this book emphasizes a natural approach to combining food types, explaining why carbs and proteins are incompatible. It critiques conventional wisdom about eating and provides credible insight into why most diets have such a dismal success rate. The approach outlined here is simple to apply on a long term basis. I have personally found it to be a breakthrough for losing weight and keeping it off.

Running on the Edge is a complex novel with multiple plots, good character development, and an occasional whack at social issues. Mr. Barnes' careful research about Mexico, the border regions, and the Tarahumara Indians add to the enjoyment.

This book has it all - action, adventure, romance, and a great set of villains. The theme is topical - border drug trafficking and mysterious killings. Mister Barnes is a skilled writer who makes the pages come to life. A good read for anyone looking to enliven a long plane flight or better entertainment than television, movies, and most other action/ adventure novels.

A basic necessity for all nonprofits
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-11
I am an accountant who works with several nonprofit organizations. I bought this book and realized that nonprofits could use Quickbooks to track their finances if they knew the guidelines and tricks that are in this book (I used to think that Quickbooks could never work correctly for nonprofits). I bought a copy of this book for each nonprofit client, and I was able to cut the time I spend working on the books and preparing reports for the government and for their funding agencies by two-thirds. Since many accountants charge nonprofits less, or work on a pro bono basis, this book can save accounting practices a lot of money.

Review Date: 2003-09-25
I'm not an accountant but I'm a volunteer treasurer for two nonprofit groups. This book is amazing. I've been struggling with QuickBooks because it's inexpensive and our accountant is used to it, but it took many hours and dollars for our accountant to produce reports for our grantors. Now I can produce the reports at a moments notice, and, more important, I can track what's going on in every facet of these community centers. I can talk to staff about budgets and increases (or decreases) because I know where the money is, where it's being spent, and where we can save money. Plus I will probably save the groups a lot of money in accountants fees. I'm not even embarrassed and nervous going to board meetings any more because I can talk about money and explain the figures and reports. This book is the best thing to happen to small nonprofit groups.

I had the privilege of not only reading this book, but also listening to Janet speak and then receiving a full assessment from her (including gait, flexibility, training analysis). She knows her stuff! I have been mostly injury free for the past year since meeting Janet. I bounce back quicker from minor injuries and generally feel better and stronger when I run. Janet's flexibility, strength, and training knowledge are straight forward, easy to understand and follow, and are useful in every day life, not just in running. As we age, I think there's nothing more important than maintaining our mobility and the exercises in this book definitely help with that! I highly recommend to anyone, not just runners, but runners should definitely read!!!

I am a 61-year old woman who walks for fitness. In reading this book I found lots of information to enable me to become more flexible and able to walk without pain. I suffer from Plantar Fasciitis and found the exercises and advice in this book to be most helpful in dealing with the problem. There is also invaluable help and advice for buying the correct shoes for walking as well as running.
I love walking and with the information supplied in this book am better equiped to wisely choose shoes and with proper exercise and preparation have been walking pain free.
I highly recommend this book for anyone of any age who is interested in building strength and flexibility. The pictures and descriptions of exercises are easy to understand, clear and helpful....in other words, "Not just for Runners".

Beautiful poetry, with rich Haitian style artwork. Young readers will love to be read this book, and we can all learn about what a privelege it is to attend school and how hard it is for some children. The story captures the rhythm and excitement of the children running to school early in the morning in Haiti.
Beautiful, readable, enriching.

The illustrations are absolutely stunning; the text is delightful and touching. Haitian children travel long distances in the wee hours of the morning without shoes to simply get to school. What a wake-up call for those of us in the U.S. struggling to get our children dressed and off to school. I bought it for my three-year-old daughter who is half Haitian, but it is a beautiful tale for any child (or adult).

A journey of life
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-26
This is not actually a book of philosophy, but more of an observation of life, and how decisions affect one's life.

Well written and articulate, and despite some interesting ties to major Philosophers, the language is simple, effective, and not afraid to comment in the modern American English vernacular. This seems, to me, to allow the author to obtain a more complete friendship with the reader.

Perseverance may be part of the guiding thoughts, but moreso the essays are an exhortation to act, rather than merely to be.

Perhaps a bit of Thoreau, Aeschylus ... or even Orwell ... might have influenced some of these writings, but the thoughts expressed will, quite confidently, stand on their own merits.

I have other reasons to appreciate this text that do not necessarily apply to this review, but I would suggest that anyone seeking some direction, or even inspiration, in life might obtain valuable insights by experiencing the stories.

Especially recommended as inspirational reading for marathon runners in training.

Running the Seven Continents: Tales of Travel and the Marathon is a memoir anthology by marathon runner Clint Morrison, about his experiences running long distance upon each of the world's seven continents. A literate first-person adventure about the joy of travel, pushing oneself to the limit, becoming immersed in foreign cultures, and even confronting one's own fear of failure. An insightful and passionate account, Running the Seven Continents offers the closest thing to a true marathon experience short of actually running twenty-six miles by oneself. "There are those that say that Pheidippides did not make the run at all. They may be right. It may be that he was among the first to get there, or that someone did die on arrival, but in a sense it really doesn't matter. If we need to ascribe an individual achievement to Pheidippides the man, it seems likely that he did make the much longer run to Sparta and back." Especially recommended as inspirational reading for marathon runners in training.

Breaks running down into 7 time periods from I. Running by Pre-and Early Humans (5,000,000-200,000 BC) all the way to VII The Modern Superstars (1950-2000). Covers the history of running spicing in some great biographies within the stories. Learn about the famous 20th century stars like Carl Lewis, Emil Zatopek and Haile Gebresilasie as well as obscure 19th century runners like George Seward, Harry Hutchens and Amy Howard.
Details how running began, the ancient Olympics, running naked, improvements in time keeping, all sorts of things that most runners never even think of. Running Through the Ages has great illustrations and excellent writing style. Ed Sears has really done his research. Whether you are a runner or simply a sports fan, I highly recommend this book. Not just track fans but all "serious" sports fans should pick up a copy of this great work!

An Inspiring and Exciting History of Running
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-17
Running Through the Ages is the most absorbing historical account of running and runners I have read. Its scope is wider than anything previously attempted, ranging from prehistory to the end of the twentieth century, and taking in professional running for men and women as well as the more familiar amateur era that dominated the last century. It is supported by hundreds of rare illustrations, most of which will be new, even to historians of the sport. There is a six-page bibliography and a comprehensive index. Edward Sears is a runner himself, and he wrotes with insight and enthusiasm as well as the skill of a storyteller. His section on George Seward, "The American Wonder", is a revelation. There are superb assessments of athletes as varied as Deerfoot, Arthur Duffey, Paavo Nurmi, Helen Stephens, Jesse Owens, Wilma Rudolph, Bill Rodgers, Buddy Edelen and Haile Gerbrselassie, for this author has the deep knowledge of the sport to give credit to great and lesser names. All the great races are vividly described and the dramas of the Olympic arena expertly chronicled. This is a fine, inspiring and articulate book. I don't merely recommend it to anyone interested in the sport; I urge you to read it.
