The unabridged Mark Twain is timeless reading

I've been reading Mark Twain for thirty years and always enjoy his sharp, acerbic wit and profound observations. The Unabridged Mark Twain is a collection of some of his best stories and essays dealing with life on the Mississippi River, travels, political commentary and general good fiction. I think one of the hallmarks of a good author is that their writings become timeless and issues pertinent then can be found today. Highly recommended reading.

Some of the very greatest American literature

Samuel Clemens is one of the greatest American writers ever, and this collection contains most of his best work. It is better than volume II of the collection. I am working my way through the book again for the third time in 15 years. It is worth every penny you will pay for it.

Best Twain compendium I know of

If you're here because you haven't read Mark Twain's novels and are considering it, then buy this or whatever you can find, and read it. That's probably not the case though, so I'll review this volume.

This is essentially like most of the inexpensive but nice-looking collections of old literature that you see in book stores, with the leatherette covers and super shiny gilt page edges. Not super impressive, but looks good on the bookshelf.

The best part about this volume is that it contains the vast majority of Twain's works that most people would want to read, including Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, The Innocents Abroad, The Prince and the Pauper, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. It also includes some classic short pieces, like The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses. In total, there is relatively little chaff in here. There is a second volume to go with this one, but it is nowhere near as good.

If you want a good Twain collection to put on the bookshelf, I recommend this one.

I recieved Michael Green's notebook a few years ago as a gift and have been writing poetry in it ever since. His illistrations are so full of power and so REAL, yet they leave the beauty of the fantasy he created and the softness of his subject, the unicorn, to work their power on me. My copy has filled up and I came on-line to see if I could purchase another copy of this inspiring notebook which always lured me into writing. I couldn't, but if anyone discovers this notebook on sale- BUY IT! We deserve some beauty in this world!!!!!

About 10 years ago, my mom got me the notebook, I wrote rarely in it, mostly poetry and diary related stuff, later about 2 years ago, I acutally filled it up, I tried to get another copy, but I was unable to do so, so I stopped looking. A week later, my good friends boyfriend got a copy, and he gave it to me. He was very surprised when i told him i had been trying to get the book, especially since i had not told anyone. I was glad i got it then, because i had just barely filled the first one, now I have two, It is always nice to have two beautifully worked journals, I love Michael Greens artwork, and his abilities shine in this wonderful book.

This book was not what I normally read...it was recommended by a friend of mine for spicing up marraige. It was totally hot and erotic....but nothing in it really shocked me. I guess it was the way the words and images were used with such taste that it somehow seemed much better than the porno movies that my husband sometimes watches with his friends. (Must be a guy thing...) I found the sexual awakening of Alice not that different than my own learning experiences with my husband....not to get too personal and not saying that I have done all those things that Alice talks about (lets be real, who could), but I will admit that it was a turn on...especially reading a loud to my husband....it made for some really interesting nights.....my best wishes for you and your nights when you read this book.

Sensuality with flare

Velvet Whispers, Joan Elizabeth Lloyd's latest novel, is a story about Alice Waterman, a rather unglamourous 32 year old dental receptionist with a flare for story telling. Because of her mother's need for nursing home care and a friend's candid admission that she moonlights providing "phone sex," Alice becomes interested in doing so, too.

From here on the story could have easily become a tired recital of sex-on-the-phone. Lurid exchanges leading nowhere could have soon bored the reader. But happily, this story doesn't. The plot development, the protagonist's transformations in her new role, and the book's other characters are all deftly sketched--and believable.

This book is respectful of its characters, and,of you, the reader's intelligence as well. It's also delightfully erotic. The characters who could have so easily become 2-dimensional libidinal stereotypes, achieve a realism that's quite rare in books of this genre. In short, Velvet Whispers is an engaging tale, very well told by a skilled story teller about a modern Sheherazade(Alice's "nom de phone"). The sex, while deliciously described, is just one part of the story. Like her other books, Lloyd's latest is erotica with flare. It resists the temptation to provide a glib denouement and is engaging to the end. Its author deserves accolades for her literary skill and for her humanism as well. I can't think of anyone who does this type of novel better. I liked it--very much--and think you will, too! A fun read.

Wonderful, Captivating Book for Girls of All Ages

Review Date: 2008-11-10
How refreshing to read a book for girls that focuses on what truly matters: What's inside that makes every girl unique, confident, and beautiful, and not what she looks like on the outside. Brianna Grant's book -- with its warm, engaging illustrations -- shows girls having fun, celebrating with each other, and encouraging and supporting one another in a sisterly way. It also serves to remind girls that they are strong, self-reliant, successful, loveable, and so much more!

My girls love this book! Whenever they're feeling unsure of themselves we sit down to read it together and it helps remind them that they can do anything and be anything they set their hearts and minds to. Brianna's message works for girls of all ages, be they runners or not!

We Are Girls Who Love To Run is a bilingual English/Spanish children's picturebook, told in first-person perspective by young girls who enjoys running for health and for fun. "I am beautiful. When I smile, my eyes sparkle, and my spirit glows for the world to see. Freckles parade across my face. My arms and legs are graceful as I circle the track." Far more than a standard picturebook, We Are Girls Who Love To Run encourages finding joy in life through exercise, and impresses the value of self-confidence rather than allowing oneself to become obsessed with unrealistic Hollywood ideals of beauty. The colorful illustrations, done in a soft yet realistic style, show young women from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds experiencing a shared joy in running. A wonderful and uplifting story; the final page has an assortment of true-life quotes from women young and old who love to run.

I truly adore this little kitchen witch. Although she is small (as is the book that accompanies her), her presence isn't. Just as the book says, she represents all of the kitchen witches all over the world, past and present, to bring about a sense of unity. The spellbook that accompanies her is small, but gives a lot of information. Although most of the information in the book will seem repetitive to most kitchen witches that have been practicing for a while, it is perfect for a newcomer. It is filled with simple magick tips and recipes that any modern kitchen witch will appreciate.

I liked this book a lot. It is about horses. Even though you can't get this book, it is a fantastic book. It is sad and happy, but mostly sad. I read this in the fourth grade! You must get this book or else you will be missing out on a lot of things that are truly wonderful. I also did a book project on this because it was such a exciting book! Take my word for it, it is spectacular!

I LOVE this version of Wind in the Willows! I had started reading the original version to my 5 year old grandson, but the vocabulary and style of writing made it too complex for him at this age. Knowing that he would love the story, I looked for a simplified version and was delighted to find this one. It is just simple enough without diluting the charm of the original, and the illustrations are wonderfully fun!
My grandson and I both recommend it highly!
