Don't overlook this marvelous resource just because it is thirty years old! Roy Oswald's
long essay has brought together two core issues for life and ministry: 1. the fact that each of us must say good-bye many times during our lives including the final leave-taking at our death; and 2.the particular application to the leave-taking between a minister and a congregation when a minister leaves. We in transition ministries value his
words both for our own lives and the work we do with congregations who have just lost their settled minister.

I have used this book and suggested this book to a lot of pastors as they make a change in their ministry. It gives some great ways to say goodbye.

Terminating a ministerial relationship with a parish. A manual for clergy and congegations on how to say goodbye and why doing it well is so important for all involved. Any church or pastor anticipating a change would do well to read and apply the wisdom here.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's like traveling to the English countryside and making new friends. Victoria Clayton is a great writer, and her books tend to be more 'intelligent' than those of other writers of the same genre.

I just finished this book and I found it to be extremely literate Brit chic lit. Good heroine, interesting secondary characters (orphans, witches, drunk doctors, fascists, just to name a few), and great sense of place. Good laugh out loud moments too.

This is the first book that I have ever taken the time to review; that speakes volumns right there. Listen, this book is just a great read. A thoughtfully written piece that is a fun romp, an intriguing page-turner, is thought-provoking and soul tugging all in one. It's not an intellectual read, but then that's the real beauty of it. You won't find yourself searching for a dictionary to figure out what anything means, but you will find yourself going back and re-reading parts just because they were so much fun or so intriguing the first time. Ok - enough's enough. Really, buy it. I'm telling you that you won't regret it.

"Running with Angels" is a story of a young man that experiences many difficult problems in life. However, the influence of God is always there guiding the flow of his life in a positive direction. These events are presented in a way that keeps the reader wondering what will happen next. The main character continues to ignore the presence of God in his life until he encounters a person that makes him wonder about the meaning of life and encourages him to seek answers to questions about the eternal God and his love. The book is not only fascinating to read, but it makes the reader focus on the importance of his/her relationship with the eternal God. After reading the first chapter, laying the book down is not easy. The rewards of reading the book are far beyond the cost and the time spent reading it. I recommend it without reservations.

Ken's book, Running with Angels, flows with the main character and his life story. You can really put yourself in the shoes of the main character. It is easy to read. I am an avid reader and I really liked this book! I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Yes I was up until 2 am finishing the story!

The best thing I can say about this book is that it gets to the point. And that point is "what is life and why are we here and what good can we do while we are here?" Everything else is trivial when you think about it. This book takes a personal approach.

As for me, I needed that personal approach. I read Ken's book, Running with Angels, within two weeks of my father's passing. During this horrible time of my life, this book has helped soothe my soul. Ken's characters gave me such good feelings about life and why we are here and what we are supposed to do with why we are here.

I rate this book tops and recommend it highly.

This book, Seeds of Evil, by Margaret Bingley, is a tightly-wound horror/suspense thriller that will keep you glued to the pages until the very end. The premise is a bit far-fetched, but Bingley does an excellent job helping you suspend your disbelief.

If you want to sum up the book with just one phrase, it would be this: Mean people breed mean little people. Readers should thoroughly enjoy this nasty little thrill ride.

I love this crule and very funny book and have always hoped that there might be a second book to follow it up. A real page turner I can not recommend it enough to anyone....

This remarkable book is a collection of essays from some of the most valuable and visionary intellects of the twentieth-century. They're all talking about sex which is a pretty universally interesting subject. Even right-wing Chritians do it from time to time in order to have children. But this book goes way beyond procreation, locating sex in a social context and showing how it became radicalized, politicized, and changed society as a result. The many great writers from Simone de Beauvoir, to Carl Jung, to Susan Sontag, share their thoughts, and the resulting collection catalogues the leaps into liberation that were the hallmarks of the time; from women reclaiming pornography, to gays in revolt against monogamy, to the average Joe feeling a tad more...experimental. Jeffrey Escoffier has done a terrific job in presenting this work with passioanate enthusiasm and editting it with impecable taste. It's enough to send a nun over the convent wall.

This book is truly wonderful. It is an excellent collection of incisive essays from some of the twentieth centuries most valuable and visionary intellects. And they're all thinking about sex which, let's face it, is a pretty universally interesting subject. Even right-wing Christians do it occasionally to make children. The writings merrily leap beyond procreation, locate sex in the political-social and intellectual arena, and focus on the hot revolutionary decade from the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies. Amidst the steam they document the tremendous strides of liberation taking place -- women becoming orgasmic, gays becoming radicalized, and the average joe experiencing a greater sense of experimentation. It all an exhillarating read. Jeffrey Escoffier's presentation is articulate and passionate and his choice of material is impeccable. It's enough to make a nun leap over a convent wall.

The Sexual Revolution: Yet Another Utopian Heresy.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-15
Why give this book five stars? It is a catalogue of the nihilistic heresy of the twentieth century--a democratic utopia fueled by an orgy of sexual expression and "free love." What is the sexual revolution actually revolting against? Traditional Christian views on morality and along with it, societal and familiar structure. The worst part of this is many people in Third World, non-Christian states view this type of license as representative of America and the West in general, when in fact this is nothing further from the truth. An overemphasis on sexuality took off with Freud and his questionable theories in the late 1800s. The sexual revolution started swinging in the fifties and early sixties as more or less male fashionable dalliance idealized in _Playboy_ magazine. It later became embroiled with accompanying liberalizing factors in Western society during the sixties such as the civil rights movement and spilled over into feminism and the campaign for "gay" rights. This whole thing is anti-Christian, anti-patriarchal, anti-family and anti-Western to the core. It is constantly bombarding the world's populaces who are (un?)fortunate enough to be in some way to experience the television set, rock n' roll CD or Hollywood blockbuster movie. The sexual revolution is at the end of the day a fraud. No sooner than women began to spill into the workplace there was plenty of money to be made by lawyers specializing in sexual harassment lawsuits. Some progress humanity has made. The sexual revolution has its antecedents in history. A few ancient Gnostic sects, because they believed the material world inherently evil, indulged in the pleasures of the flesh because it supposedly did not affect the state of one's spiritual being, a few well documented here. When Christ is ignored, man will instead look for earthly means to bring about the Kingdom of God and eternal bliss on merely human terms. Christ's Kingdom is "not of this world" and will not be experienced in this life, but only in the Age to Come. In the case of the sexual revolution a millennial utopia is attained though the grossest desires of the flesh. Has the sexual revolution failed? Well, people are just as disgruntled as they ever were. At least Marx's economic utopia of the proletariat looked serious and businesslike. It's best to stick to traditional, moderate sexual values, which are especially important to maintain in the face of the world's dissolution and media propaganda. If you want the obscene details then look no further than _Sexual Revolution_. Everybody with some opinion and agenda are mentioned somewhere in here, from Freud, Wilhelm Reich, Norman Mailer to _Time_ Magazine, Larry Flint, Susan Sontag, etc.

Frank Murphy does not miss a thing in this book on women long distance runners. I myself am one and not only did he accurately portray the stresses a female runner puts on herself and has forced on her by others and the sport itself but he also provided factual and intriguing statistics about such legends as Mary Decker, Doris Brown, and Suzy Favor Hamilton. I could not put this book down. This true story desperately needed to be told, and no one could have done it better or more completely.

An indispensible history

Professor Murphy has created the rarest of works, an unlikely combination of literary nonfiction and sports history. I know of no other work on women's sport, particularly running, that offers such depth and breadth. A must for anyone interested in running, the history of women in athletics, and the Title IX era.

Review Date: 2001-10-01
This book has two levels to it, the first being a historical review of the sport of women's distance running. The real gold here is however what insight is revealed in following the career of Stephanie Herbst during her career at the University of Wisconsin. The dedication and motivation of Ms Herbst and others like her and the dangers of both external and internally generated pressure to perform are an eye opener. The last few chapters especially are extremely powerful.

When running records lose their punch with advanced readers

Review Date: 2001-10-10
In my job as being a Literacy Coordinator for my school, I have often heard from teachers who say, "Running records don't tell me what I need to know about my more advanced readers." I've also heard, "Running record results make my student look like he is reading at a high level, but it doesn't tell me much about his comprehension, and I know he isn't comprehending what he is reading at this high level."
I have found this book to be a great resource in addressing these issues. Dr. Shea shows not only how to code a running record, but also how to code a systematic retelling assessment tool. This tool's results are correlated with a running record results to give an over-all picture of a student's performance in reading a book.
This is an affordable, easy to read book that will be worth your investment of time and money.

I feel fortunate that I learned the process of Taking Running Records. What I was able to do for all if my students to improve their reading skills was beyond my belief. Thank you Mary Shea from the bottom of my heart!

This little package is great for travel. The cards are tiny, but you can still manage to shuffle them, they are a little on the "hard" side, but they stand up well when traveling. I really liked the drawings, they are kind of folksy and simple. It's a nice break from the intensely drawn packs that I have. The book that comes with it is concise and it has both upright and reversed interpretations. It has a piece of paper with a 4 card layout and a simple explanation. This you can throw out or keep. Great little gift, and cheap too.

I bought this set as a going-away gift for a co-worker for whom I had done some tarot readings. I was impressed at the quality of the set for its price. The illustrations are nice, and it comes with an instructional booklet and spreadsheet. The graphics are cute, but do not contain as much symbolism as Ryder-Waite based decks. The cards are not too small to use, but are a little difficult to shuffle due to being somewhat thick.

This book helped me get off the pavement and start running on beautiful trails throughout the Bay Area. I recommend it to other road runners who are tired of the same routes along busy streets, or trail runners who want to discover new territory. The trail descriptions are enticing, with mention of wildflowers, views, and other sights and smells along the way. They also give a clear picture of trail conditions and route, with difficulty ratings. There are trails described for every county around the Bay. Several of my non-running friends have used this as a hiker's trail guide and sung its praises as well.

Great trail running book!

I've explored a number of new trails and learned new things about some of my favorite trails using this book. It includes well-known trails plus the more hidden ones. The trail and area descriptions are detailed without being overwhelming and offer great alternate routes for a change of pace or a different mileage. The natural history sections gave me a good background on the areas and things to think about while I ran.

I recommend this book for the person new to trail running, new to the Bay Area, or just wanting to explore new areas. I loved it!

Wonderful Book

Review Date: 2006-11-11
This is a wonderful book. It is simple, but informative (information on best oils, etc.), has an enticing range of recipes (from appetizers to entrees to desserts), and is beautifully photographed. Of three books I purchased on deep-fryer cooking, this is my favorite. The recipes are simple and straightforward, but with nice variety - American, Asian and East Asian recipes are to be found. The photography is beautiful and is something that I find an enjoyable supplement in a cookbook as it can entice me to try something that I otherwise might not.

All the recipes I have tried have turned out well and, while not Cook's Illustrated, the book provides a better level of detail for this form of cooking than do a couple of other books I have on deep frying. For example, while the recipe for corn dogs in another deep frying book I purchased simply says to dry the hot dogs with a paper towel, dip them in batter and then put in the deep fryer, this book instructs you to dry the hot dogs with paper towels, then dust them with flour before dipping them into the batter in order to help the batter stick. The recipe then advises you to lower the corn dog into the oil carefully so that the corn dog doesn't plunge in, hit the basket and stick to it.

All of this may sound basic and self-evident to more experienced cooks, but none of it was to me as a relative beginner to deep frying. When I first made corn dogs following the recipe from the other book before I had purchased The Ultimate Fryer, I had difficulty with the batter sliding off the hot dog (because the recipe did not mention dusting with flour) and in my rush to get the corn dog into the oil before the batter slid off, I was obliged to drop it quickly into the oil with the result that the corn dog plunged to the bottom of the fryer whereupon it stuck to the basket. When I later tried to rotate the cooked corn dog, it tore loose from the basket and pulled off the batter on the end of the corn dog. The oil began to boil as it hit the exposed hot dog. This is a simple example of the differences between this book and the other two I have, but it highlights why this book is my primary reference for deep frying and why I only turn to the other two after I consult this one first.

Great cookbook
