The simple story of the love of a man for a woman, set amidst (an intense study of) tribal life and wolf packs 100,000 years ago. Eve leads her tribes out of Africa intent on finding the Tribe of Lost Brothers and Sisters. She meets up with Brother Wolf and his packs, and Neanderthals. In the 21st century, Dr. Arny Singer, Nobel Laureate discovers the link among Eve, the Neanderthals, and wolves (just as the Earth Mother had planned). Arny is treated to a trip back in time to witness his discoveries. He falls hopelessly in love with the most beautiful and fiesty woman Earth Mother had ever created. Discover who the Earth Mother favored: wolf or man, and why.

This novel was the most romantic epic I have ever read. I loved it. The protagonist, Eve, is in her forties. Eve leads her people to an Eden that is pure and free, not only for mankind but animals as well-nirvana. The love is appreciated not only between Eve and Arny, other tribe and Clan members, but between mankind and wolves as well. The author speared my heart through the deep connections expressed between people, the love of animals, and the respect of nature. I hope he writes his next book with the same sensitivities. The author mixes hunting, mysticism, customs, song, wrestling, tie-matings (weddings), art, and story-telling to create a dynamic portrait of the times, people and wolves. There are cameos by ravens, cave bears, cave lions and an arctic fox that spice the stew and steal your heart.

I was so happy to see a story about BLACK EVE and even happier after reading it. Eve is a role model for all of us. I can recommend this beautiful story. With wolve, cave bears, cave lions, ravens and neanderthals it has something for everyone. My son says, "It's the wolves, mom". Ok, my grandson won't give the book back. Read and enjoy it.

I spent the last month going through this book with a vengeance. For someone like me, who wasn't born with business sense, this book is a godsend. Mr. Hazelgren writes in a style that is easily accessible to the layman and provides a wealth of information that is indispensable for anyone who is even toying with the idea of starting or buying a business. I found that the chapters were laid out in a logical progression that made the concepts he presents easy to follow and digest. I found the worksheets he created to be extremely helpful not only in deciding the kind of business(es) I would do well in, but also in determining the place I am at as far as turning my dream into reality. Now that I know where I stand, I can use the great strategy presented in this book to progress from the idea to the planning stage.

Things like creating a business plan, figuring a budget and applying for small business loans, all seemed intimidating. Now I have the information that I need and in a format that I can use. I feel that this book has opened new doors for me, and it will continue to be my first and best source of information in my efforts to become a small business success. Here's to the American dream!

Fun on Foot makes a fantastic addition to any book collection. It is a cornerstone item if you travel around the US and like to keep fit in some of America's most fun cities. It provides great coverage on routes for casual walkers, joggers or runners. The routes can be incorporated into a leisurely afternoon stroll, or a quick run or jog for the time restricted traveler. My husband and I really benefited from the NYC Central Park route and took advantage of it many times during our visits to the big apple. The maps are great and there are well illustrated notes. Looking forward with great anticipation to the European edition....

I found this book to be well written and easy to read. In addition to the well planned running/walking routes in more than a dozen American cities, the book is full of interesting historical notes on the sites along the routes described. The book will appeal to those interested in keeping in shape while traveling to various cities in the USA. Having lived in New York City for many years, I am familiar with most of the wonderful routes described in this city. I will certainly bring the book along on my trip to Washington in June and other American cities in the future.

"The Garden of the Perverse" is a great book of erotica. I liked that the stories weren't derived from older fairy tales, but new ones were brought to life for readers. It really sparked my imagination and was a thrill to read. I also would recommend Dead Sexy: Two Tales of Vampire Erotica as well.

All in all, a great erotic read. Don't pass it up!!

A Different Take on Erotica

This work is a different take on Erotica. Sure there have been various erotic anthologies, even a waterproof version for bath tub use. But this one was based on "Fairy Tales for Twisted Adults." Many begin with "Once upon a time, There was a woman once, There was once," pretty typical fairy tale intros that quickly devolve into the "c" and "f" words along with some very descriptive literary imagery of male and female body parts. For an intro that REALLY grabs you try "TORTURE. DOES ANYONE alive even know the meaning of the word?" Wow, that's a hook that will draw in a reader. It's from the JJ Giles selection: Mirror, Mirror On The Wall. It's a clever little tale of retribution with some vivid imagery, surely a selection in this tome not to be missed. I won't give away the ending. Bryn Colvin's selection, The Jealous King and The Generous Lover, is a very fairy tale genre set piece that could be a morality play for children...if you take out the various male genital, tongue and [...] references and concordant acts. The selections are just long enough for a bedtime story read, although you may not want to drift right off to sleep after such reading. Garden of the Perverse is a fun and different read and has something for most everyone.

This book was not as "titilating" as I had expected, but it was much better than I expected. The stories are tightly crafted tales of longing, desire, love and loss. They are erotic in their darkness of forbidden desires. The dark realm of the fairytale is brought to life with excellent results. If you go to the original versions of fairytales you will find a darkness there that is recaptured in these tales. This book is an excellent example of fear and desire. It only touches the surface and leaves you wanting more.

I'm relatively new to running and haven't read anything else written by Dr. Sheehan...but I certainly plan to.

The man can write. The book is broken into little one or two page essays (maybe former RW columns?) which are, if nothing else, good bathroom reading fodder.

If you're looking for a book which will help you set a new PR, you should probably look elsewhere, but if you're a true running afficianado(sp?), pick up a copy of this book and you won't be disappointed.

This book is enchanting! Although intended for children aged 9-12, it is perfect for all ages, including adult.

The book explains the concept of sharing and giving, and includes many folk tales, fables, and legends (from many countries) that stress the importance of charitable giving. If you like the Chicken Soup for the Soul types of books, you should greatly enjoy this. And you could use the folk tales as the basis for many crafts to make for yourself or for gifts (not to mention to teach children about charitable giving).

It also stresses The Giving Box, used to keep handy to put spare change in at the end of the day, to share with those less fortunate when the box is full. That would be marvelous for chidren, but is also great for anyone at any age. The book explains the Jewish tradition of this type of box, which is still used in many Jewish homes -- and how to adapt it for other faiths, since charitable giving applies to all of us.

HIGHLY recommended for people of all ages. If you've got a heart -- or need one -- this book is for you.

I read this book in one sitting. It felt like a deep conversation that I'd have with two old friends at two in the morning. Calvin and Alvin's voices intertwine throughout the book to give this incredible view of their life which in many ways feels like one life. They say, "This is who we are and this is what we have experienced and this is what we have learned." What I heard is, "Be who you are and experience what you experience and learn from it." Their story is told simply, with love and reverence. Their story is one that hands you, the reader, courage as if it is their gift to you. Their story encourages you to look within yourself and say, "Oh yeah, this is who I am supposed to be. How did I get so lost? How do I return to where I need to be?" Go to YOUR destiny. I will meet you there.

They make you know that anything is possible and share the steps they've taken to attain their successes. Could not put it down.

Wilmington and the Civil War

Review Date: 2008-04-01
If you've never read anything about the Blockade or the ships which used to evade it you really should read this one. Dawson Carr does a great job discussing the role of Wilmington, the primary destination for blockade runners during the Civil War, and discusses the cat and mouse game between Union warships and the unarmed transports which used to try to slip in and out of the Cape Fear River. Carr supports his book with sidebars which has stories of individual ships and also has an excellent collection of maps and diagrams which makes the material really easy to comprehend.

The blockade of the Confederacy and recent changes in naval technology made for unique vessels for running it. Carr brings the subject alive.

Great Read

I found this book a great read. Dr. Carr did an excellent job in writing a book that was very informative on the blockade runners and the blockaders. I enjoyed the separate stories through out the book on actual events. This really gave the reader a fill for what tactics the blockade runners used and the tacitics used by the US Navy. These little mini stories also were idea for showing the ever changing tactics used by both sides.

As a sailor who served on PBR's in Vietnam I related to the blockaders but admired the skill and daring of the blockade runners. Dr. Carr did an excellent job in showing how both sides tactics evolved during the war with the changes in technology and as more blockading vessels were used.

I highly recommend this book to all readers interested the civil war or naval history. I would like to see Dr. Carr write a book about the blockaders.

Absolutely fantastic!

Review Date: 2003-10-06
The American Civil War has provided countless authors with material for nearly one hundred fifty years. Still, with the thousands of books and articles written about this war, some aspects of the struggle are often overlooked. I have in fact seldom run across a book, which has for its entire subject the blockade of a single southern port. I am sure other such works exist but I haven't seen them. But no matter what other books are out there I doubt they can hold a candle to this work. In fact, I have seldom ever been so enthralled with a book. Dawson Carr has provided us with a concise, thrilling, well-researched, and very understandable look at the wartime activities along the Cape Fear coast. The writing is absolutely wonderful and the story draws the reader in like a classic novel. You will not want to put this book down until you have finished it.

Carr begins his narrative with the early efforts of North Carolina to secure its coast and proceeds from there. The stories of the building of the coastal fortifications are well told and informative but it is his stories of the blockade-runners and their pursuers that will grab the reader's attention. One can almost feel the tension on the decks as the runners try to slip by the Union blockade, which grows in strength every month. As the pilots strain to make out landmarks in the total darkness the runners used for cover one can almost imagine being there and trying to make out some form on land, hoping the first thing you see isn't an enemy ship.

All of Carr's stories aren't of the blockade-runners though, for he also covers events in Wilmington, Richmond, Liverpool, and many other locations that are involved in this story. In one instance for example there is a tense confrontation between Governor Vance and Confederate authorities during which the Carolina Governor is basically placed under house arrest for a short time. Of course all good things must come to an end and for the Confederacy their last port fell shortly after Braxton Bragg was sent to take charge of the area. Infighting in Richmond, squabbles with state authorities, war profiteers, and three plus years of a union navel blockade couldn't close Wilmington, but it only took Bragg a short time to lose the Confederacy's last port.

If you are a civil war enthusiast, are interested in navel history, or just like a well-told story I highly recommend this book. If a six star rating existed this book would easily deserve that rating. Well done Dr. Carr, well done!

As a career consultant, I find myself responding to questions about the ultimate getaway: finding a new job (and maybe a new life) overseas. It sounds so romantic...till you get into the nitty-gritty of paperwork, taxes and health care.

This guide gets 5 stars simply because it does what it promises: offers a straightforward guide to those who are considering a move but have no place to begin. However, I would recommend (a) reading multiple guides and (b) talking to folks who have been there. Try to find someone who's been in your situation. A 60+ retiree won't benefit from talking to a twenty-something; a single person needs to understand how a culture interprets her lifestyle.

I spent a few years in Canada on a "landed immigrant" visa (equivalent to a green card) as a business school professor. It's been awhile, but I would say the info here seems accurate and balanced. The author assumes her readers will be concerned about safety and health care. Your beliefs, values, and interpretation of events will influence your own priorities.

But for a starting point, you could do a lot worse.

When I first happened upon this book I was immediately attracted to the title. As a person who had left the comforts of an active career 4 years earlier to see what I could build in Europe, I thought this book might be amusing and thought it might enlighten me about situations I had yet to encounter.

It turned out to be a great deal more than that and I wish I had read it before I'd made the leap. It would have saved me a lot of hand wringing on various subjects and helped me think through a number of topics in advance.

The book addresses those who want a few months' getaway in a different environment as well as those who want to pull up stakes completely for a more `long term' change of scenery. Although written to some degree from an American perspective, the issues and questions raised apply no matter what your departure point.

Knorr raises subjects ranging from how to choose your destination, the family planning that's required, health care and medical coverage, insurance, passports, visas, bureaucracy, safety, financial considerations when operating away from home, what to take and what to leave behind, how to deal with the property you own, settling in, networking in your new environment as well as how to find a home, car, doctor, you name it, she thought of it.

Knorr gives you the facts but also addresses the emotional upheaval that can accompany such a move and helps you think through the permutations that always accompany a big decision! She writes with the wisdom of somehow who has passed this way and wants to save the reader some of the headaches she encountered while navigating the waters of setting up home in a new location. Her style is engaging, straight forward and very well informed .

If this book inspires you to take the leap, all the better, but even if I doesn't, it's a great read and will acquaint you with the adventure and challenges that await those who do. It is an easy read and jam packed with good information on virtually every aspect of making this kind of decision. If she missed anything, I'm not sure what it is.

I used this book for one of my class and I come to like it very much. The organization of the book is different from most other books I have used. To me, it is a "how to" book with step by step instructions on how to build various components using C#. Usually, I have to surf the web and will find the "how to build things" in different places. This textbook gathers them all in one place. There are a lot of useful topics that a programmer would need in a real life programing tasks.
