I purchased this book to use as part of an 8th grade Grammar curriculum. It is wonderful! The stories and activities made learning the concepts fun. My son didn't even realize that he was doing schoolwork. An excellent choice for anyone learning grammar - or someone just brushing up on their skills. Two thumbs up!

This book is filled with useful information and helpful exercises. It helped me to understand grammar concepts my own English teacher could not explain to me. Thanks to this terrific and fun-filled book, I was able to get through 8th grade English easily. My teachers and parents have noticed a change in my papers as well as a better understanding of grammatical concepts. Anyone who is lost in the world of English grammar, should pick up this book.

When I need to recycle some scrapple, this is the book I reach for to read on the throne. Funny, nostalgic and insightful. Same qualities that make BDG the best personality at Meathead Central - WIP (come back, Jody Mac ... all is forgiven). Reads like a blue-collar guy's guide to Philly. At $2.99, great stocking stuffers!

The authors of The Great Book of Philadelphia Sports Lists, Glen Macnow and Big Daddy Graham, are among the few 610 WIP personalities I enjoy. When I purchased this book, I did so with great expectations. Let me tell you I was not disappointed at all.

Regardless of wether or not you agree with some selections on the lists, the book will hold your attention. It is entertaining throughout (there are occasional lists few and far between that are rather dull, but they couldn't ALL be winners, could they?) and quite humorous. There are also some lists mixed in that are not sports-related. Strangely, they don't seem out of place.

Perhaps what I enjoyed the most about the book is the many guest contributions from Philadelphia athletes, broadcasters, journalists, or others with local ties, many from outside the world of sports. These lists include local PA announcers' favorite names and greatest locker room feuds the fans never got to see, just to name a few.

If you are a Philadelphia sports fan, don't just go by my recommendation, go out and pick this up yourself. You'll be glad you did.

Nice going Hal you've put out another great book for runners to follow as they progress through their sport.

It seems that my biggest challenge these days is motivation and nutrition where my athletes are concerned. There are just too darn many fads out there and the real "easiest" way is when you put in the study and the work.

Hal Higdon has taken the problem out of researching your needs and put it right in front of you in this book. Read what he's giving and then incorporate it into your program.

Trying To Cover Everything

Review Date: 2001-06-14
Written by "Runner's World" magazine's senior writer, this book takes the form of question and answer over a wide range of topics. Simply put, it's a FAQ manual for runners.

One small problem with this format is, there is only one question and answer addressed per topic, so the information imparted is very specialised. To counter this, the book covers a wide range of topics from beginning running to marathon training, to injuries, to advice for young and older runners.

I would recommend this book to the beginner / inexperienced runner. Those who have been running for some time would very likely have come across most of this information before. If you're looking for a repository that contains a great deal of accumulated knowledge that can be accessed easily, here it is.

Although I considered myself to be a seasoned runner, I knew there was much that I had yet to discover before taking on my first marathon. This book helped incredibly - with everything from nutrition to preventing potentially painful or debilitating injuries. Though training to run a marathon is most certainly an arduous and daunting task, Higdon's book helps to put running into perspective and removes it from the realm of "only the talented can do it." He gives running back to those who don't know everything about the sport and are willing to learn.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who is considering a marathon or even a 5K for the motivation, the advice, and the knowledge.

It's quick & easy with lots of color & specific tips. It's particularly good if you feel like you're too old or out of shape to run a half-marathon. While there are great tips for training for more competent & experienced half marathoners, as a runner moving into the "masters" category, I really appreciated some of his insight into prioritizing workouts and pacing so I could avoid injury and enjoy myself longer. Took his advice on walk break and set a personal record at my next Half Marathon, despite the aging knees!!

Run-Walk-Run Really Works!

Review Date: 2007-10-15
I bought this book while in the middle of following another taining plan for my first half marathon. The other, simpler plan was based on just grinding out the miles though it did include a few longish runs (8-10 miles) split into 2 halves with a short walk in the middle. I kind of liked a short walk in the middle (100m or so), it seemed to rejuvenate my legs. But ultimately the plan I was on eliminated them in favor of pure running.

Galloway recommends many more walk breaks and, at first, this seemed to me like cheating. But I figured I'd give it a try. I started running my 8-12K runs 1000m "on", 100m "off" (walk) and I saw something amazing happen: my split times came down and I could run longer and more enjoyably. My run/walk ratio of 10:1 is actually a lot higher run than he recommends, but it works great for me.

I just used the technique in the San Jose Half Marathon and the results were great. I beat my baseline goal by 10 minutes and even beat my stretch goal by 3. I beat my last 13 mile time trial time by a whopping 20 minutes and, more importantly, I felt great coming across the finish line (I was *crawling* on my last time trial where I ran 3 x 7K with only very short walks). My pace actually sped up throughout the race and my last 2 miles were my fastest.

So, for me, the system works. I am doing another half in January and will follow the entire program this time.

Good presentation and detail for any runner

I am basing this review on simply reading the book for about 15 minutes while killing some time at one of the big chain bookstores. From what I see, this book is wonderfully written and broken down perfectly, even for "older" novices like me (over 50, run a 9-10 minute mile, have run in about a half-dozen 5Ks' and looking to do more).

The presentation is colorful, motivational, and detailed enough for runners of all levels to get something out of it. I am currently reading the MARATHON YOU CAN DO IT book and that too is written in a breezy fun style yet there is a lot of text. HALF MARATHON seems almost like an outline with easy to view points and notes.

I also own the ABSOLUTE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO HALF MARATHON but if you only want one guide, Galloway's book appears to be the better and handier guide to own.

Easy, motivational read

I haven't done many of the suggested drills, but simply as bedside reading this book does a fantastic job breaking down critical elements of the game. I've used many tips I learned from it, especially in baserunning, with success. In baseball you can think too little, and you can think too much; this book finds the right level.

This book is a great guide to an aggressive style offense. As a player I like to take the game to the opponent and make them work. Coach Delmonico shows the essentials to an aggressive offense. I plan on incorporating some of the ideas in this book into my own coaching style. Sitting back and waiting for the big inning can win some games, but aggressive offense can win more games. I recommend it highly to all coaches.

Rod Delmonico tells you a lot of things in this book you probably have heared before. But then I'm sure even an experienced coach will find some great new hints. Also, I have never seen so much vital information about how to play the game of baseball put together in one place in such a consice and easy to read way. Rod teaches you basically about bunting and base running. A chapter covering the basics of hitting (again mentioning everything important in just a couple of pages) is included as well. Curiously though the actual hit and run play isn't covered. Only bunt and steal plays, as well as general base running are included. Those are covered expertly though. I will make this book required reading for my players (since it's not too long, you can read it within four hours). I loved the fact that Rod didn't relate any boring stories from his own experience, like many other baseball book authors do, but just put down material you could use directly.

This book has a lot of great recipes in it - my only problem with it is that it is very large & so it doesn't fit with the rest of my cookbooks - it is a big square-ish book. That gets on my nerves a little bit b/c I had to find a different place to keep it.

The menu suggestions make entertaining a pleasant experience and the Mexican Fiesta is my favorite. However, I am going to use Holly Clegg's ideas for my Superbowl Party in January to impress my guests and family. This is really a "MUST" for every kitchen. You will make a lasting impression!

I've made the shrimp and grits casserole, chinese fried rice, tiramisu, bbq shrimp and others. I've even given it for gifts and everyone loves it. The layout and photography are also very well done.

A pregnancy book that neither tries to scare you nor makes you feel guilty for not constantly living on a pink cloud. It does use a specific (ironic) sense of humour, which, I suppose, can be annoying. But I loved it. I thought the information given was the most honest and detailed so far, MUCH better than 'the mother of all pregnancy books' by Douglas. I would definately recommend to leaf through it in the bookstore and if it appeals to you, buy it! My husband, who dislikes the books that take themselves too seriously (and portray all fathers as beer drinking sports fanatics)really enjoyed this book, too! Now he knows as much (well, almost) as I do, and that makes the whole thing much easier.

I'm pregnant with my first child and fed up with books like 'Your Pregnancy Week by Week' which seemed designed to make you feel both guilt and terror in equal measure for your entire pregnancy. It's so nice to read a book that addresses all the important things a mom-to-be needs/wants to know without ever being condescening or bullying in its agenda. The clip art illustrations and captions have me rolling on the floor with laughter, and the writing is also witty and smart.

This isn't the book I would turn to if I have a very specific medical question, but it does help my mental health enormously! (Laughter is the best antidote to stress.) I plan to buy it for all my friends as they become pregnant.

Definately not mumsy!

Review Date: 2003-11-18
This is one of the growing new trend of pregnancy guides - it tries to be the antithesis of the 'What to expect when you are expecting' genre by being hip and sassy. A lot of this hip and sassiness seems to translate as cutting comments, but there is still a lot going for this book.

It does give you many of the answers you are sure to be looking for - such as those relating to the gross things that happen to your body and if you can ever have sex again (though this may seem self evident if you know anyone who has more than one child!) It also manages to avoid the preachy tone of many books that realising that yes, you may have the occassional drink or cigarette, and while it is not recommended, don't stress, you aren't the first.

It is easy to overdose on pregnancy books - each one might have a little something differnt, so perhaps you should just buy each one. Or maybe you should just get one, and use a bit of common sense. And why not this one? Truth be told, the best bits are the illustrations - from 1950s advertisements and magazines, recaptioned with an appropriate witty and biting style, they are sure to have you laughing

Trish Stevens, writing for the "Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance" calls INDIAN SUMMER,The Return of the Myth of the Running Man,"...a page turner".She goes on to say "...you are barely aware of it until you are swept away and wonder how it happened.Cornell has conjured up a sci-fi thriller with a new sense of discovery through psychological and sensual explorations."..."The subject is multi-layered which establishes the story as science fiction, but like all good sci-fi's,it all seems real and very possible"...develops a theme that suggests a world like Shakespeare's Arden...and, as in '"As You Like It', the presence of gods and goddesses begins to be felt."..." Cornell weaves a tale that wraps around on itself, leaving the reader to wonder how it all began."Indian Summer" is definetely a pagan experiance which merges cultures into a new modern folklore."

The beautiful flow between man and woman is found to be captured in the very first paragraph and continues to move in patterns mimicking the cycles of the moon, earth, and man like a long night of ecstasy throughout the novel.

I have never read anything quite so rhythmic and so completely understandable as well as the work being able to offer an understanding of the ways of pure love, be it in nature or man, or even animal. A work of art that I graciously applaud and recognize to be as meaning filled as the words of many of our more recognized prophets, Love Is The Universal Answer. We can use love to describe life in so many ways.

I was first introduced to this deck when it first was first printed some years ago. As a graphic artist by trade I was not only very pleased with the art, but also the incredible quality that the deck and the companion book had in the final, printed delivery. The poetry, prose and lyric associated with each card makes for a whole new dimension in playing cards. The only piece of information, or lack of information that left me wondering was in the product description as it did not say whether this was the original complete set or just the book, sans cards. An outstanding collectible for anyone who enjoys playing cards.

I bought this around the holidays in 1992, and it kicked off my interest in card collecting. This is a work of art, and of all the art I own, this is my favorite. Ostensibly, it's a transformation deck of cards with an accompanying book, but it's also a series of beautifully executed paintings (the ace of spades is a spider, the 3 of diamonds is the Titanic sinking, the 4 of spades is a yellow jacket), each with an accompanying verse. Hidden inside all of the verse, however, is a puzzle to solve. This is so clever on so many levels, it's amazing. If you enjoy intellectual stimulation in your art, track this down. It's a shame it's out of print.

One of the most witty, beautiful decks you will ever see!

I highly recommend this deck to anyone who collects cards. It lives up to it's name and more! Tony Meeuwissen has very cleverly used the suits to create wonderful illustrations of traditional rhymes and verses on every card. (It's not tecnically a transformation deck, but once you've seen it, you won't care) No written review can possibly do it justice, it really has to be seen to be appreciated. Well worth hunting down an (unfortunatly) out-of-print copy!
