Eagle Rock is a fast paced adventure with heart. It grips the reader from the first page and doesn't let up until the epilogue. It may be written for readers aged 8-14 but I found it a good read as an adult. The themes in the book (loss, fear and survival) are interesting at any age. As a principal I can tell you that students at my school loved it and talked about the book long after it was finished. Teachers found the questions in the back of the book useful for literature circles. I recommend this book for readers who enjoy Gary Paulson books, Gloria Whelan books and Jean Craighead George books among others.

A riveting adventure story!

When I read Raenette Palmer's Eagle Rock, I couldn't put it down! Not only does it tell a wonderful tale of survival and adventure, it is filled with a certain pathos. Kids in the upper elementary grades enjoy it and the adults who are fortunate enough to read it with them will enjoy it too. Keep more coming, Raenette Palmer!!

As a reading consultant in an elementary school, I saw many teachers of grades 3-5 reading this book as a 'read aloud' to their students. The kids were so riveted by the story that they didn't want it to end! Eagle Rock has become a favorite of 8-10 year olds I know. When I read it, I loved it, too. It reminded me of a Gary Paulson adventure story. I'd highly recommend this book to young readers and adults alike! Raenette Palmer is an exciting new author!

This book provides golfers at all levels of playing ability the opportunity to improve their game and also better understand "how and why" certain shots are made.

It is simply the "Bible" of golf.

Every golfer should own a copy and use it often.

Great book for analyzing the mechanics of the game.

This is the most far reaching analysis and treatment of the mechanics of the game that I have seen. It has value for the experienced golfer who understands enough to look for specific fixes for his/her own game, while having the same very basics that discuss the mysteries (nuances) of the game for those at the beginning of this utterly exasperating and pleasurable game.

Impressive - this book is very clear in what it covers from its title alone. The discussion on making basic hand-made paper in a variety of methods and producing variations in the surface texture/color/materials used is excellent. Wonderful step-by-step photos (not shown in the "Search Inside this Book" link) compliment the directions and show the end product. TIPS provided throughout the book provide sound information that is VERY useful when proceeding with your own work. When it comes to the second section of the book - Bookbinding Techniques and Projects - again very well done. The tools needed are clear and well represented to get you started and for those that may be a bit more advanced. Each project provides a list of tools needed so you can be well prepared as you tackle one or more of the projects. The guidelines in this section are again well-written complemented by photos of the process...and the photos are extremely useful when it comes to the more complex processes when making books - especially the various binding methods. The papers produced do not go to the more elaborate as seen in other books on papermaking, but when you are making a book/journal/travel log/photo album wild papers are not necessary unless you want a striking cover IMHO. A few pictures of paper art by various artists finish the book in a nice way and help increase the creative process for my own papermaking designs that I use for my own art/business. If you want a more advanced and very detailed book on how to bind books - go elsewhere but for what I have mentioned above and what is described in the Table of Contents, the author has covered the subject extremely well for all to be able to learn and make well-crafted books/journals/etc using their own hand-made paper.

Well worth the money

The two things I like most about this book is its thoroughness in the techniques it shows and its easy to understand and follow instructions. Not only does it give step-by-step written instructions, but it also shows you pictures at each step, unlike some craft books that only give you a picture of the final project. The book also contains a variety of projects, and they are decorated in different styles. Most other craft book only offer one style, such as very -artsy- (i.e. colorful) or very -country-. There is nothing wrong with these styles, but it is nice to have a variety of inspiring choices, such as this book provides. I reccommend it to both the beginner and more experienced crafter.

Altho' I am somewhat of a beginning artist, I want to use my form to make books and embellished items. After comparing this book to others, I found this WELL worth the investment -- even at full price. I can hardly wait to get started! It covers very basic techniques to more advanced, "artsier" stuff, and makes it simple enuf to follow along and figure it out. Complete with great photos and simple instructions...if you're interested in making books or paper, this is a great resource...

I thoroughly enjoyed this very interesting history of the early days of Fidel Castro's revolution in Cuba. The photos of Osvaldo Salas and his son Roberto, personal photographers and confidants of "el jeffe", have never been seen in the US. The personal anecdotes relating to Fidel Castro and Che Guevara are fascinating and give new insight into these historic characters. It is fascinating to read that the long hair and beards of the 60's anti-establishment hippie movement had its roots with the "barbudos" the soldiers of Fidel's revolution. The chapter on the bay of pigs invasion gives new insight to this historic event. The beautiful photos in the chapter, Cuba the land and the people are stuning. Overall a good read, great photography of an interesting topic.

Brilliant photography with a new insight to Castro

Soon Castro may be judged by history, as he once claimed he wanted to be, and the facts point in the direction of a dark, blood-stained judgement. Nonetheless, the photography in this book is a brilliant work of photojournalist art.

They take us from the tender beginnings of a Revolution of bearded young men against a bloody tyrant. They are young gods in olive-green uniforms. The photo of Camilo Cienfuegos and another unidentified bearded guerrilla in front of the Lincoln statue in the Lincoln Memorial in DC is magnificent. What did America think of these young white men, in their dark, long hair and their huge beards? It stunned and seduced the nation and the seeds of the hippie movement were planted.

The book delivers with visual insight and power. The photographs are vivid and full of history. My highest possible rating!

Americans who hate Castro should stop, look, and listen

Apart from the amazing photography, which captures an epoch so freqently only seen through CIA-filtered eyes, the book is a simple overview of the Cuban revolution and the real people of Cuba - not just the materialistic bourgouisie - who supported Castro and still do. Most enigmatic of all are the photos of Castro and Che, and then just Che, his magnetism shining through regardless of his beliefs.

Set your politics aside. Look at this wonderful book and ponder how close Fidel and Che came to actually getting it right.

more than meets the eye

Review Date: 2000-03-22
For the millions of Americans who have only ( until recently ie since the Pope's visit to Cuba ) seen Fidel as a military man this book adds a bit of humanity to that image. The imae of him as a threat to my safety is a view I could only suspect was being presented me as my government's own bit of propaganda (thinking of how recent publication's on how the Soviets used photography as a tool to control the masses) I was genuinely pleased to have my suspicions confirmed.

Nonetheless, upon opening this book, one finds that it is more than meets the eye. It is not the political treatise one might expect. I am grateful for the honesty the son (Roberto) gave in the acknowledging the irony in being both a suporter of the cause as well as a photographer/reporter of history.

Of particular interest, which I think self taught photographers may find of interest, is the many anecdotes on how Roberto and his father "made do" with what little equipment they had (both before going to Cuba and after) and how they shared equipment. Such disclosures dispell the popular belief that an aspiring photographers needs all the latest gadgetry that manufacturers pump out. The kind of "socialism they [Cubana] fought for is the kind struggling artist could practice.

From a political perspective. The book (story) of how the U.S. Government ousts individuals be they journalist or subversives is touched on. This is a book that may touch the heart and the soul of a anyone who suspects Cuba and Castro have stories to tell. Finally, it is a photographic feast of photojournalism from the inside of not only the revolution but the photographers who documented it.

I read this book over 30 years ago and feel compelled to recommend it as I have read many books since then and this one sticks out in my mind. I read it at age 14 while living in Germany, and I'm not sure that really had anything to do with it's impact on me, even though I certainly got a feel for the countryside where the action took place. This was a different time. In any case, the story has stuck with me and I purchased a copy so my 11 year old son could enjoy, and I imagine, learn something from this great story.

His aircraft hit during a mission over France in December of 1940, Tommy Calnan jumps from his flaming spitfire. His face so severely burned that he cannot even see when he hits the ground, he is quickly picked up by the Nazis. After a brief stay in a hospital, plotting escape all the while, Calnan is transferred to the first of many prisoner of war camps. Committed to escape and return to England, Calnan gets involved with any escape attempt. Some of these ingenious plans fail, but the author does manage to escape and lead the Germans on a rambunctious chase all over the countryside. To tell any more would spoil this wonderful book. If you enjoyed the movie "The Great Escape," you'll love this book and marvel at the ways these "defeated" prisoners of war continue to fight Hitler after their capture

A reader of WWII POW books

Review Date: 2002-07-08
A fine WWII POW story written by T.D. Calnan, an RAF pilot shot down over occupied France in the early stages of WWII. Calnan is badly burned but makes several successful escapes over the next several years.

In something of a contrast to other, better known WWII POW books (e.g. The Great Escape, The Colditz Story), Calnan's story is a very personal, almost romantic adventure story at points. Calnan's prose is not particularly literary but it is very effective. When Calnan surveys the German countryside on a crisp evening soon after escaping from a train, the reader truly experiences the feeling of being as free as a running fox.

In describing life in the prison camps, Calnan displays a keen understanding of human nature, the universal and those aspects which are uniquely British, German and Russian. Throughout his captivity, Calnan seems almost pathologically obsessed with escaping, but never seems to lose his dry, uniquely British wit for very long, even though his hatred for the German war machine is palpable.

In summary, this book is a must read for all fans of WWII POW books, and others who enjoy a good adventure story.

A useful, basic and practical guide to spirituality

I found Pam Grout's style entertaining and informative. She takes what could otherwise be considered complex, sophisticated concepts about the spiritual world. However, her use of everyday language makes her ideas approachable, easily understandable and non-threatening. Her simple, down-to-earth treatment uses contemporary examples to make what could otherwise be exotic seem reasonable. The title may imply a Christian slant, but it's a book for a much broader audience. What really makes the book work is the exercises -- 10 easy ways for the reader to prove (or disprove) the theories she presents. I found this such a useful little piece that I bought copies for several friends and relatives who I felt could benefit from the basic, optimistic tips for finding your own way in a loving, supportive universe.

I had a publisher's proof of this beautiful little book before the real thing was out and I drank it in like a tall lemonade on a hot day. I keep highlighting and writing things in the margins like "Yes!" This is a truly glorious book: in-your-face and young and fun, yet wise in a very deep and satisfying way. Pam Grout doesn't pull any punches: you may agree with her God-doesn't-belong-to-any-particular-religion take on things or you may not, but I can't believe anyone could read this book and not feel surer that there's a positive purpose to all this. That we're loved. That we have important work to do. And that if God Doesn't Have Bad Hair Days, maybe our own bad hair days (and bad work days, bad money days, bad guy days, etc.) aren't so awful after all.

A Spirituality for Everyone

You don't need to be turning thirty-five and have your boyfriend dump you for a twenty-something, bleached-blonde law student like in the first line of Pam Grout's "God Doesn't Have Bad Hair Days" to learn a valuable lesson from the book. What you do need is the desire to love, be loved, and find peace and happiness in your life--not just your afterlife, but your current life. Pam walks you through ten simple exercises, each taking less than forty-eight hours, that will show you that not only is the God force (call it what you will, but she'll call it "Cosmo K" or sometimes "The Dude") attainable, but also all the love and beauty it has to offer is actually yours for the taking.

Reading this book is like getting advice from a good friend who has a wonderful and quirky outlook on life. No matter your spiritual beliefs or upbringing, there's a precious message anchored in these pages and once you embrace it, you'll see your life start to change in ways you've only dreamed about.

"Talk about making it simple. Pam Grout has taken this obtuse mystery we call God and broken it down into 10 easy steps. But watch out, the God in this book is nothing like your mother's oldsmobile. This God is fun, exciting and guaranteed to take your life on a wild, spine-tingling roller coaster ride. And, as Pam says, it's open, free and available to anyone with the nerve to get on board."

The authors of The Great Book of Philadelphia Sports Lists, Glen Macnow and Big Daddy Graham, are among the few 610 WIP personalities I enjoy. When I purchased this book, I did so with great expectations. Let me tell you I was not disappointed at all.

Regardless of wether or not you agree with some selections on the lists, the book will hold your attention. It is entertaining throughout (there are occasional lists few and far between that are rather dull, but they couldn't ALL be winners, could they?) and quite humorous. There are also some lists mixed in that are not sports-related. Strangely, they don't seem out of place.

Perhaps what I enjoyed the most about the book is the many guest contributions from Philadelphia athletes, broadcasters, journalists, or others with local ties, many from outside the world of sports. These lists include local PA announcers' favorite names and greatest locker room feuds the fans never got to see, just to name a few.

If you are a Philadelphia sports fan, don't just go by my recommendation, go out and pick this up yourself. You'll be glad you did.
