While taking a photography course at my school, I stumbled across this book in the bookstore. The idea of taking a series of photos of 100 boots and then mailing them as postcards appealed to me immensely, even though i was not alive at the time of of the postcards. Not only do the 100 boots tell a story through pictures, the photos themselves are wonderful works of art. Definitely buy this book.

26.2: Marathon Stories

This was the perfect gift for my brother who was completing his first marathon. He read it from cover to cover on the plane. He loved it. I loved it and I didn't run a marathon! It's filled with interesting and inspiring stories and neat facts. It makes a great gift for the runner in your life.

Must-Have for Marathon Runners of All Levels/Experience

Review Date: 2006-06-05
As a recreational but devoted marathoner, (currently training for #9), this was an obvious must-have for me. Most books published under the Rodale title are generally just rehashes of old RUNNERS WORLD magazine articles, but this is definitely not the case here.

This handsome coffee table book is beautifully designed and offers not only inspiring passages we've come to expect in the world of the long distance runner, but breathtaking photography and insight into the minds, passions and heartaches associated with the sport. It fairly examines the good and the bad throughout the long history of "Marathon;" from ancient Greece to contemporary pop culture.

Divided into 26.2 chapters, it is a wonderful book for both the devoted runner and interested spectator as well. Would make a great gift.

I actually had an emotional reaction by the time I got to "the Finish Line." Just like in real-life! So this book willl definitely be a treasured addition to my library.

Captures the true spirit of running!

I'm a "senior", "middle-of-the-pack" runner and been at this for 30 yrs, completed 7 marathons and read most of the books concerning the subject, but found this one to be truly original. Running is basically a simplistic sport but to extend oneself to the extent to complete a marathon requires a special effort which this book manages to capture better than any other I've read so far. A must for anyone interested in running or those trying to figure out what makes people do this crazy stuff. Easy reading and wonderful photography!

The author makes it easy for parents to implement eating solutions their kids will love. Most books address the issue -- this one solves it! If you have kids or grand kids that are members of the 'junk-food generation' this is one book you can't do without. Its on our kitchen counter and we refer to it daily for meals and information. The book even includes an 'approved' shopping list -- all tested on kids! If Amazon had a 10 star rating -- this one would certainly get it.

I used to keep these huge books on the table for my guests but they all got replaced by this tiny but very lovely book filled with baby photographs.
Every baby (photo) has a wise saying beside - based on their body and face expressions when the photo was taken and I guess that's what makes this book so adorable.

I bought it for five dollars but I would not sell it for a thousand because it is a sunrise to my eyes, a delight to my soul and weightless as the air to my bookshelf.

Ms. Michele has captured a goodly number of expressive baby portraits and matched them with appropriate quotations from ancient and modern sources. The finest nonfiction about running

Review Date: 2007-08-14
Kenny Moore's work in Sports Illustrated was transcendent in the hey day of the running boom. With so much crap written about running then and now -- mystic spirituality, training legends, hero worship, self-centered ideology -- Mr. Moore has written the truth about serious runners. As one of America's great distance runners himself, he knows his subjects, and writes with authority and some sympathy. Mr. Moore's recurring theme: great runners train and race on the edge of breakdown and despair, with a chance at fleeting glory. Some of these pieces are achingly beautiful.

Now, a message for running fanatics -- if you keep this book and Once a Runner on your nightstand, you will never miss a workout. If you have any motivation in you, this book will reinforce it and let you understand it with clarity. Enjoy.

An Insider's View on the Great Track and Field Athletes of the 60s and 70s

Review Date: 2006-03-26
Kenny Moore is a gifted writer of Track and Field and he was a gifted athlete in his own right. 4th at the Munich Olympics, Moore actually knew and competed against the great Ron Clarke, Steve Prefontaine and a number of the longer distance runners. In a series of chapters focusing on famous individuals, he writes of their trials and accomplishments as competitors along with the post career trials of their life. Notable is Clarke, the great record holder and every day competitor who went for it in every race but met misfortune at the Olympics. John Akibu, the great 400-meter hurdler, who is one of the most dominating athletes in the world yet he is handcuffed by the African boycott of the Montreal Olympics and unrest in his native Uganda. The book contains terrific write-ups on John Walker, the ailing 1500 gold medallist, Prefontaine and Mary Decker among others. Pre always made good copy and Moore trained and competed with him. My favorite story is of Moore's own Munich race. Moore gives you a participants view of the marathon and a feel for his body that spasms at the wrong time costing him a medal as he desperately tries to regroup finishing a frustrating fourth when he was in close contention for a silver. A must for any fan of T & F, a well-written book by a man who understands competition at such a high level

I stumbled across this book when my husband recieved it as a gift from a co-worker. Since we are both avid runners he would read me lines in the book that resonated with him. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it too. Each chapter resonated with me and my love for running and all the great people this sport has led me too and all the great challenges, triumphs, dissappointments, achievements and lessons that running has brought to my life. Dr whitis captured so many of the instances where life parallels the sport of running. His love of life, his family and of running is an ispiration.

Even though it mentions the physical and psychological benefits of running[significant stress relief, sometimes trance-like state during slow, long distance running],this book is much more:running stories, anecdotes, philosophical musings, memoirs.
The style is brilliant;the stories are easy to read and very entertaining;Dr.Whitis is indeed an excellent story teller. The reader will gain insight into and enjoy the authors' sensitivity and idealism.
This book is not only for runners - it will delight also non-runners,and perhaps tempt them to start running.

I start out reading with the best of intentions. I will not fold, bend, underline or use a marking pen to hilite insights or experiences that I find interesting. This book would go into the bookcase next to Frank Capras "The Name Above The Title" to be collected not marked up and wore out.

Saturday Nov. 1, 2002
So much for "Best Intentions". I'm staying at Gidden Lodge on the Lake Michigan side of Door County Wisconsin. After taking to "The Road" for an early morning run, I convince myself that you would want me to tear into this book; bending, folding, underlining, marking (whatever it takes to get to the insights and experiences that lie within). Lets face it, "The Road" of which you write about so eloquently is going to test us, so I'll take all the insights I can get should it try to trip me up with a "POP QUIZ".

INSIGHTS-TREASURES I'LL TAKE WITH ME ON "THE ROAD"

FINDING ONES LIMITATIONS
"Only as the runner comes to accept the limitations of his body, and the boundaries of the road, will he be free to develop his latent potential to become a better runner". "and in learning about the boundaries, we grow". I think when people behave as if there are no limits, they end up hurting themselves and failing to grow. Early on I had to face limiting my runs and adding other exercises {Nordic Track, Weight Training, Stationary Bicycling) to avoid injury. I found out that sometimes less is more (less running).

PROFOUND FAILURE OR REAL FAILURE
"I now perceived how much I had identified myself with what I achieved, as long as I kept achieving I thought I was doing great. I had lost track of myself, that I was more than what I accomplished. In fact, the humbling conclusion out of all this was that it really didn't matter much what I had accomplished, but if I was a good man that mattered a lot more."
My "REAL FAILURE" happened freshman year at Loras College. I failed Spanish. What really hurt was when the Professor said that he didn't think I was "College Material" (whatever that means). Fortunately, his opinion of me did not become my reality. I graduated from Loras in 4 years. I think I'm a better person because of that experience. Its nice to accomplish things,"but to be a good man that matters a lot more".

THE ALTERED STATE
"Sometimes though, once in a great while and not nearly often enough, something happens inside my head which is hard to describe but comes under the heading of an "Altered State of consciousness". "Sounds become muffled and seem distant and go on indefinitely without effort." "There is a profound sense of "Oneness" with Nature, with Life, with the Moment, an indiscribable sense of beauty and peace." "I feel I have been given a glimpse of Heaven, of my Spirit, of my Potiential as a human being".
I believe we are born into this World Incomplete. The pieces we need to bring about that completeness have been sprinkled on this path that we journey. I call these missing pieces "Pieces of Heaven" and each time we find one we experience a "Profound Sense Of Oneness".

"When I ran out that door and ran headlong into the transforming effects running can have on a Persons Life,..."
I have found this to be so true. Perhaps one reason for this is that we are a nation of insiders {we spend way too much of our lives encapsulated within our cars. our homes, the companies where we work}. There may be an inner need to experience more of the outside. Also, because of being insiders, we fail to move enough. Movement is an essential part of living. I believe that the behavior of running outside makes us focus on the fact that our environment is larger and richer than we are aware.
"Beyond Running" brought back many good memories. From the Twenty-Four Hour Marathon to Race Day (The Half Marathon). It was a great feeling knowing that I had participated in those events and shared in the friendships of many of those you wrote about. I'm proud to have been a part of the running movement and really appreciate your gift of a book that effectively demonstrates the significance of that movement.
Sincerely, Mel Kohler

I just finished reading "Beyond Running" by Dr. Peter Whitis and found it to be both enjoyable and enlightening. It felt like the author was inside my head describing all of the thoughts and feelings I have experienced while running. He describes what only other runners have felt and experienced and what they cannot possibly explain to non-runners to have them understand how special running is both physically and spiritually. "Beyond Running" is an excellent book that all runners will relate to and feel that someone understands their feelings and thoughts about running. A book that deserves a 5 star rating.

This is one of the best books I've read on how to achieve your goals and dreams in record time. Scott Armstrong is creative in weaving a step-by-step process into running the Boston Marathon, but he didn't stop there. Scott shows how these same principles that helped him achieve his goal are same key ingredients that you can transfer and adopt in everyday life. This book is a great read and you will be motivated and inspired to take action toward your goals and dreams TODAY! So why wait? You now have the success formula!

This is a great little road-map book. Scott Armstrong shares the step by step process he used to achieve his goal of running in the 100th Boston Marathon. What's great about how he shares his story is how seamlessly he transfers the wisdom he gained from his triumph into a form that anyone can use to engineer their own personal triumph. Scott recounts the goal achievement process that he developed to cultivate the clarity, commitment, focus, discipline and perserverance it would take to execute his plan. We as readers are guided to examine our own goals, to expand our view of what is possible, to set our sights higher, and to develop the mind-set that will carry us all the way through the process with laser-like focus. The book provides a great example of how the mental and emotional aspects of goal achievement are fused to the daily action steps required to accomplish the goal. What I found unique about this book is Scott's ability to provide insider's access to the step by step, results-driven, daily mental and physical regiment of a high achieving athelete, in a way that inspires me greatly, and still makes the process seem attainable for my dreams and goals. I felt like Scott conveyed the wisdom and kindness of a good coach; one who will walk beside you no matter where your starting point, relentlessly encourage you to believe in your potential and abilities, stick with you as you increase your skill and overcome resistance, help you keep developing strength and speed and endurance, and then celebrate your many victories. My kid's are high-school athletes and are reading this book. The lessons in mindset, goal-setting, values and daily action are presented in a way that they 'get' it and put into practice. If you're thinking of buying this to be AFRICAN lore, don't. This is an adaptation of the Joel Chandler Harris Uncle Remus stories, focusing on those containing the Brer Rabbit character. The stories are delightful, and will be a joy to any (I also heartily recommend buying a complete set for reading aloud), but the tales are drawn directly from the heart and soul of America (there are no raccoons and bears in Africa, anyway...sheesh).

I use this book in my first grade class to go along with a Brer Rabbit story in our textbook. The students loved the stories about the many different ways Brer Rabbit tricked his neighbors, especially the story about the tar baby. It has extraordinary illustrations that would captivate the attention of any child, even ones with short attention spans. I think it is a "must have" addition to a child's or teacher's personal library. What a wonderful classic to share!

With this book, Barrett paints the history of secret societies with a very broad brush, which is good in my opinion. So many of the other books get bogged down in a morass of minor details that may or may not have any substance. Barrett weaves all the threads from the different groups together to form a complete tapestry. You will come away with a much better understanding of how it all fits together. This is truly a history book, not paranoid hysteria.

absolutely fascinating book. the author really discerns and disects tons of history and beliefs of many secret societies. That and it is accompanied by very very great insight and extremely informative. He does it too in a manner where it is not pressuring it on you. Just stating the facts and backing them up in a humble way. His intention is to inform not change beliefs. lots of learning to be had here for those who wish to pursue it.
I had no idea the book would be this good. It was a christmas gift given to me completely at random and I am very grateful to have received it. It also reads like a history book, informative on religions. etc. A good book to also pick and chose what faith you would like to pursue or follow

Mr. Barrett's look into the history of various esoteric societies is refreshing in its objectivity and thorough research. This book will give the reader a brief but accurate look at various societies and how they interacted within the world at their time. Additionally, his intraspection on the Freemasons, Hermetic Philosophers, Gnostics, Templars, Neo-Platonism and various other groups include their affect on the world and other esoteric organizations with similar perspectives. In respect to the Freemasons singularly, this book references the works of both Knight and Short, discussing what they got right and what they got wrong.

A wonderful read for history enthusists whom seek to broaden they're knowledge on heterodoxical societies and their sometimes blatant, sometimes subtle influence on our world today.

This book does a great job of reviewing cheeses from around the world. It is entertaining to read and very informative. There are good quality photos of each of the cheeses, detailed description with history, anecdotes, wine recommendations, fat composition and occasionally a recipe. This book is more for learning about cheeses than about cooking with cheeses. The size of the book is small enough that you can inconspicuously take it to your local cheese shop and use it as a reference.

Delightful and Informative

As an American who has travelled Europe extensively and LOVES cheese (and wine!), I was delighted to find this book in English which fills us in on all the background info about all these cheeses. It is very well researched and sophisticated in its selection. This book will make your mouth water.

Enjoy great cheeses of the world.
