If you are a "goal oriented" distance runner, you'll love this book. Most of us can forget trying the workouts listed here but hey, we can dream! This is a great thing to reread when one wants to get fired up about one's training. I really turn to this book when I am tempted to waste more money on fads, new gadgets, etc. :-)

The formula for Kenyan success in distance running? It is no secret, really. You will find about what you expect. Still, this book is worth reading.

This book also provides a few brief glimpses of Kenya's culture and of the various sub-cultures within.

This is the best running book I've ever come across - and I've read a few! It's easy to read & fun, makes we want to run to Africa to run... On a more serious note - it shows that the only way to improve is to train. It's informative and backed-up by some of the world's greatest runners. As Mr. Tanser says: Train Hard, Win Easy. Great reading!

I expected this to be a book, which would reveal all the secrets of Kenyan runners and take my own running to another level. I was a bit disappointed at first but when I started reading it more I found it very inspiring. It teaches you how crazy actually the Kenyan runners are with their training. This book does give training examples of what the Kenyans do but they are more like just "samples" of the training and it's hard to get a big picture. If you want to learn the secrets of Kenyan runners, forget it -- there are no secrets. These guys just train so hard that it would be a wonder if they wouldn't be world class runners. If you want find out what it takes to be a world class runner, this book could be your choice.

Training for cross country or distance track events can often become tedious work. Anderson does a great job of providing simple, ready-to-use games and techniques that will help combat this problem. I found many of the ideas useful and easy to use right away. Other ideas were not so adaptable to my team, but I still used the nuggets he have in the book and manipulated them to meet my needs. My athletes responded with enthusiasm. While nothing can take the place of mileage, the mindset an athlete has during the mileage can set the tone for the whole training experience. Although this book may not meet the needs of the reader to a tee, it is broad enough to enable the reader to create his/her own variation on the theme. Solid book for coaches.

"Training Games" is a rather tiny publication compared to others relating to the same topic, but it is loaded with great ideas! It is to the point. Everything relates to practice and there is no wasted page! I used this book over and over and still discover new things. It also leads the user to create and add own ideas. Invaluable for any teacher and coach! It is money well spent.

Lots of fun and useful information. The kids are always asking to play a game or practice one of the techniques found in the book. I have had the book for a year, and there is still so much yet to use! A great tool for finding new and different ways to improve your coaching/training.

If you train, be it for a goal race or a charity run, then you, like me need motivation to keep going forward. We all need tried and true tips to change things up, this book is full of those. Nobody can or should run everyday, so why not hit the gym on off days? we all need something different and we all need to stay injury free, a different sport, something to cross train with and something to challenge us beyond where we are. Time off keeps the injuries at bay, extra training and working the muscles does too. This book offers examples (through word and picture and charts) of different training exercises for in season and off. It is filled with suggestions on how to mix different exercises up, I love and you will too!

I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.

This is perhaps on of the most compelling books about unicorns ever penned. Each page is filled with colorful illustrations and manuscript reproductions. I was luck enough to recieve this book new on my ninth birthday and to find the sequel while passing through North Carolina. If you enjoy mythology and unicorn lore I strongly advise this book. You will not be able to stop pondering the mystery of the true horn, I also believe the horn lies in the rocky mountains, at the very least I am sure it resides in the new world.

It is said that horses with 'whorls' on their forheads are really of unicorn descent. Horses with white spots on each side of their 'withers' are of pegusus descent. I was blessed with a unicorn/pure bred arabian. This book is a MUST for all those that are in search of the truth. Unicorns ARE with us today. Read the evidence within this fabulous transcript. They are one of God's hidden treasures. Only those that BELIEVE will know them. I agree with one of the previous people that have made a review on this transcript. DO NOT lend it out, once you have obtained it. You will NEVER get it back!

Unicornis is a mind-blowing book, I first read it when I was in the 9th grade, in 1991. I borrowed it from my local Library, and since returning it, I have never been able to find it since. It is a beautifully written book, with luscious illustrations and captures uniquely that delicious sense of majik and mystery. I wrote down the poem from the book, and had memorised it, so for the past nine years I have been able to recite it and hope that I may find this book again someday. Well worth the effort of searching for, trust me on this!

I bought this book for my two year old son who loves John Deere. We read it over and over and over again. I like that the black cat (who was thought to be bad luck in the beginning) turns out to be a good cat, and that the ghost turns out to be a scarecrow with a sheet on it. It was a great way to look forward to Halloween and to help my son know that all of the scary looking things aren't really that scary.

Monica Sheehan is a master at making light of the heaviness in our world today in her book Be Happy. The simple yet powerful messages, coupled with fanciful artwork, make you smile, laugh and ponder at throwing away your day to day troubles. Perfect for the overworked business person, the depressed lover, the teacher with 30 unruly second graders, the mother who has lost her child. I am one of those I just described and smiled and smiled through the pages then ended up buying more copies to send to friends. I highly recommend this book for yourself and your friends.

I recently had a friend pass away, and I have picked this book up every now and then since, not to take the sadness away but to remember what is important in life. The author is witty, irreverent, very smart, and not in the least bit sappy. And the simple line drawings beautifully communicate the messages in her writing. Can't wait for her next few books to come out too! Until then, I am ordering 15 of these as the perfect holiday gift for friends and family.

I had a number of questions regarding pasta. Every time I made pasta something different would happen. This book answered my questions and some I didn't even know I had! He teaches you how to make pasta by hand and by many different machines. He recommends trying all of the methods to find what works best for you. I have not tried many of the sauces yet, but I like the variety available. He believes that pasta is not just for Italian dishes and includes sauce recipes for many ethnicities. For novice pasta makers this is the book to have!

The book covers a wide range of subjects on planning, building and operating a Lionel O-guage layout, but does not go into a lot of detail. Both Post-War and Modern Lionel trains and tracks are covered as is the newer TMCC electronic controls. The photos of existing Lionel O-gauge layouts are excellent, but the book did not describe the type of track nor were track layout diagrams provided, which would have been very informative. Nevertheless, the book is interesting and provides a good overview of what to consider when planning and building a Lionel O-gauge layout.

Meg Cox's latest book is a winner! Culling from interviews with families nationwide and from her own astute observations, Cox shows us how rituals can strengthen our family bonds, can help to ground us (especially helpful in such uncertain times as these have been) and can provide us with meaningful memories. Just as rituals add pizazz to daily life, Cox's book brings a fresh and vigorous perspective to the body of literature on the subject of tradition. Brimming with stories and tips, wit and wisdom as well as colorful illustrations, this book is tantamount to the Whole Earth Catalog of rituals. A creative way to teach good values.

Very refreshing synthesis of a Russian year that shook the world

Roy Bainton is a British journalist. He wrote a short narrative history of the Russian revolution in 1917, an excellent introduction in a very fluid style. He focused on the experience of the people, great and small, who influenced or just lived through those momentous events (mostly in Saint-Petersburg, the capital city). 1917 was a year of great suffering for the Russian people. The " First revolution", in February, that put an end to the Old autocratic Empire, unleashed huge hopes for freedom. The October " coup" of the Bolscheviks, however, crushed these hopes for at least 70 years, and inaugurated unheard of barbarism in the name of ideology "for the good of the people".
Roy Bainton used a variety of "general" sources, but most importantly, because he meant to recreate the ambiance of the times, contemporary eyewitness accounts; he also traveled several times to Saint-Petersburg in 2000 to speak to people who either had been through the events (although at the time they were still very small children)or who told the author about their parents' experiences. That would not have been possible before the 1990's. This is the first book I read about the Russian revolution but I found its approach particularly refreshing.

Very informative and approachable

I found the book informative and paced fairly quickly ... but I knew very little, so each and every tidbit was new to me. Not academic-y, which is a common trap to fall into for books like these. There were a few slow parts, but suprisingly readable overall.

Review Date: 2005-02-08
This is the kind of book that might be produced in any free country about almost any incident of interest. It's the memories and personal recollections of a large group of people.

In the Soviet Union such recollections had to match the party line from the time of the revolution (1917) until recently. That makes this a breakthrough book. The number of people old enough to remember what they were doing that year is rapidly shrinking.

Mr. Bainton visited Russia several times seeking people to interview. He was successful in finding a great many people to talk to him. Most were original observers, some were telling stories that had been told to them by parents or earlier relatives.

It's a very enlightening book.
