This book really draws the reader into the civil war days in Arkansas. The way Ozark folks felt during this time in history is well presented. I highly recommend this book. Can't wait for Nancy's next book!

Where the Road Begins by Nancy Dane is a wonderful Civil War tale,
her writing reminded me much of Gap Creek by best selling author Robert Morgan. The page turning novel about a family struggling to survive during war stated 'Book One' on the cover. I hope there's a Book Two!

Among this genre, it is now one of my favorites.

This story begins in 1861 near Little Piney Creek in central Arkansas. It follows teenaged Elijah and his family as they experience the fear and horror of war. It was a war that waged all around them and had consequences that affected every person in the countryside. The dialogue rings true and authentic; allowing the reader to come to know and care about the characters. The detail of everyday life is a reflection of her research; it paints a vivid picture of common people caught up in uncommon circumstances. Well researched, well written and I could not put it down!

The book Where The Wild Things Are is an interesting book, because it has alot of imaginary thought put into it. And i also like how the author goes into the story like, the boy traveling through the sea and finding all the imaginary animals.

This book is about a chicken crossing a road which leads to many events. When the chicken crossed the road it lead to cows moving in a bridge. Then, the cows fall down a train. A robber escapes out of the train. Many more events follow after that. This is really a great book for the young reader to read.

This book is a knee-slapping take off of the classic "Why did the chicken cross the road?" kids joke. David Macaulay's hilarious book gives a behind -the-scenes look at the chain of events leading up to, or occurring as a result of that chicken crossing the road. Although the plot seems to go off on a tangent, the end has a twist that ties the story together. But some how he leaves you thinking,"Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"

This study is truly divine. We just finished this in our Parish's women's bible study and we never have enough time, even with two hours set aside, to discuss everything. The nice thing about the format is that if you want to read the chapters from the bible you can but you do not have to as it has five pages of concise, easy to follow, thought provoking commentary. There are usually five to seven questions at the end of each chapter. The only thing is that you have to really spend some time flipping back and forth in the bible to all of the OT and NT references in the questions in addition to the catechism. It is worth the effort and truly felt like a study instead of reading and then genuflecting. I learned so much about Catholicism, Tradition, Old testament portents to the coming of Christ, The Holy Spirit as a living and breathing being and where our Church roots first began. I am looking forward to continuing the rest of Acts in Witness of the Messiah.

The Acts of the Apostles - Unlocked

Review Date: 2007-03-15
This small Bible study book is a part of the Kingdom Series published by Emmaus Road out of Steubenville, Ohio. This small series of books (4 books total) focus upon the overarching theme of the Davidic Kingdom in the New Testament. This text is fairly short at 141 pages of larger than normal typeface with a couple of pages of reflection questions and blank writing space at the end of each chapter. The writing style is accessible to the average layperson, and the author's conclusions are well thought out.

In "Witnesses of the Messiah," Stephen Pimentel consistently shows how Luke wrote his Acts of the Apostles with the Old Testament in mind. Pimentel points out the various literary allusions to the Old Testament and how these allusions (as well as the explicit citations of the Old Testament) can help us understand the narrative better. Sometimes he will even give a transliteration of the Greek to help the average reader understand these allusions.

There are three main themes in Acts of the Apostles, which Pimentel explains. First, Luke portrays the time directly after the ascension of Jesus as a time of intercovenantal transition when the Deuteronomic covenant was about to come to its visible end with the destruction of the Temple. The actions of the apostles and the Christian communities display a keen awareness that divine judgment will soon befall Jerusalem (and it did in 70 A.D. with the first Jewish-Roman War and the seige & destruction of Jerusalem). One example is the selling of land and homes in Jerusalem immediately after Pentecost. More than radical charity, this is a pretty good economic choice. Why keep your land and home investments, when they are about to lose cash value due to a national disaster?

The second major theme is that of the Davidic Kingdom. Now that Jesus Christ is enthroned as king over his kingdom in the Ascension, he reigns through the Apostles' ministry by means of the Holy Spirit. Through the earthly ministry of his ministers, Jesus reunites the 12 tribes of Israel. Considering the fact that 10 of these 12 tribes were assimilated nearly completely among the Gentiles, the apostolic mission to the Gentiles (those non-Jewish nations or people) is the means by which all of Israel - all 12 tribes - will be restored into the united kingdom under the Son of David: the Church.

This leads us into the third and final theme: that of incorporation of the Gentiles into the Church. Pimentel carefully analyzes the events leading up to and including the Council of Jerusalem in Acts 15, which solved a major problem of evangelizing the Gentiles: whether they should follow the dictates of the Mosaic Law. Since the Law (i.e. the Mosaic Law) was a national law meant for the Deuteronomic Covenant, it is no longer binding upon those who have entered the New Covenant and who have now received the law of this New Covenant: the New Law of the Holy Spirit.

This concise and well-written Bible study would do well, I think, on the parish level with small groups. As a parish director of adult formation, I intend to use this text as the textbook for just such an endeavor in the near future.

A Critical Contribution to Biblical Criticism
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-23
A tenet common to both genuinely Christian exegesis and redaction criticism - critique of biblical texts as compositional works - is that understanding the human author's perspective and intent is central to reliably interpreting his writings. Stephen Pimentel skillfully exemplifies this tenet in his exposition of Acts. In particular, Mr. Pimentel's diligent yet concise exegesis persuasively presents extensive and textually well-grounded evidence that Luke's perspective excluded any dichotomy of biblical theology and historicity, contrary to the presumption widespread in modern biblical criticism. Mr. Pimentel's work is especially pertinent to the corollary of this presumption, which is that New Testament authors typically compromised historicity for the sake of advancing their theological "agenda." As Mr. Pimentel shows, the text of the New Testament, and in particular Acts, strongly indicates that such a compromise would have been unthinkable to the authors of the New Testament. As Mr. Pimentel shows, these men viewed the New Covenant as culminating a theologically significant and historically real development of God's covenantal relationship with Israel.

Mr. Pimentel's exposition is thorough enough to gratify the formally trained student of Scripture, while remaining highly readable to non-scholars. This exposition principally consists of surfacing the literal "saturation" of Acts in Old Testament subtexts underlying the direct citations and quotations of Old Testament Scripture. As Mr. Pimentel convincingly shows, these pervasive subtexts clearly indicate Luke's insight into the significance of the New Covenant Church: as the covenant community established and advanced by Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit, the Church is the definitive fulfillment of God's covenantal promises to Israel from Abraham to David. This insight has tremendous religious significance, which Mr. Pimentel ably assists the believing or searching reader to grasp through helpful reflections at the end of each concise chapter. Yet Mr. Pimentel's work has a distinct critical value as well, for the New Testament's message cannot be properly understood apart from an intellectually honest accounting for the authors' perspective of that message.

Attacks by German submarines on Atlantic coastline targets during World War II were a very real possibility and one to be guarded against by the American Navy and Coast Guard. In Wolf At The Door: The World War II Antisubmarine Battle For Hampton Roads, Virginia, James Powell builds upon original scholarship and research (an in collaboration academician Alan B. Flanders who is an expert in naval history and a prolific author of maritime history books) to reveal the story of the U.S. Fifth Naval District's defeat of German U-boats in the struggle for Hampton Roads, Virginian -- including perspectives of naval officers and captains from both sides of the conflict, and in the process also informs the interested reader in the overall development of the U.S. Antisubmarine Warfare Program. Wolf At The Door is a unique and invaluable addition to the growing library of World War II Military Histories.

This is a great title for the professional historian or amateur history buff. The interviews with and comments by German U-boat captains is compelling and teaches much about the actual experiences during WWII. What I like most about this study is that it presents more than one perspective, not only the perspective of the authors but the truth as told by men who were actually there. Highly recommended!

I think this story was amazing. I couldn't put the book down. It is about an alcoholic, but the story is applicable to so many other things that happen to us in life. I connected with the characters in this book in unexpected ways. It is a beautiful story of a man finding himself by helping others. He ends up helping himself much more and they help save him. A wonderful all around book. I would highly recommend it to everyone, and already have.

This was a dazzling book of adventure and genuinely engaging! The author was extremely skillful at conveying his own sense of engagement and accuracy of details regarding the characters and experiences of the successful adventures. Raymer's openness of his thoughts and emotions in regard to his ongoing struggle with alcohol addiction is refreshing and inspirational! I found it very difficult to put the book down once I began the journey thru his chronicles.
Gregory's admirable journey epitomize's the importance of true change in an addicts life for a successful recovery. The author accurately conveys the importance of positive change thru the reaching out to help others.
The adventures were truly "intoxicating"!!!

The "Yellow Brick Road" is the best book I have read by William Bausch. What is so helpful is the unique way the author weaves his stories into the spriritual journey, making his points very clear. One story that highlights this fact is the one about Ruth & Margaret entitled "Ebony & Ivory" It must be one of the most inspiring stories ever told. This book is full of hope, courage & discernment & it will be extremely useful to anyone going through a personal crisis. The book is real to life situations.

If you're a teacher, you need this book! What a great tool. I've taught both intermediate elementary grades and middle school, and I can tell you that this book gives so many useful tips and strategies to help those struggling readers we all have in our classrooms. ALL of Janet Allen's books are worth buying and reading. I have all of them and constantly refer to them for ideas or reminders. I do not joke when I say that several of the pages in her book are folded down, as a way to remind me that there is something incredible to remember on that page. Her book recommendations are great too.

Another reason this book is so amazing is that Janet Allen is honest. Not all of her strategies work every year. We all know that we don't get carbon-copy classrooms every year and have to modify and tweak our instructional strategies to reach our students. That's the beauty of Allen's books, you can adapt them to how they fit best with your class.

If you like this book, buy "Words, Words, Words" and "There's Room for me Here" as companion-pieces to "Yellow Brick Roads." Great reading, and worth your while!!!!

Janet Allen's book is a wonderful resource for any middle or high school teachers of literacy - especially those teachers involved with at risk learners. Allen's work is also always uplifting and motivational. She reminds all of us who work with kids that all kids truly can learn, as long as we are willing to meet them where they are. Allen does not just offer a philosophical perpective, hower. Yellow Brick Road is also filled with practical and "do"able activities and strategies to implement in a classroom teacher's instruction. The book is an easy and enjoyable read.

Yellow Brick Roads is a must read for the reading teacher who is deluged with new books each year. It will tie up many loose ends for you, rejuvenate you, and validate your gut feelings about the teaching of reading.

Janet Allen's greatest gift is really to the struggling readers themselves. She has total respect for her students, and that respect shines through her writing. She reminds us that our students are our greatest teachers, and that we must observe and listen to them carefully in order to support their literacy growth. Teacher as researcher is the guiding princeple here. She will also help you convince the schedule makers that you need more time for the teaching of reading. I am ready to reread it the third time this summer!

This book is the most comprehensive I read about North American trucks. I have lots of books about trucks but none is as thrilling as this one. A wealth of pictures and information - I doubt that there's another book which delivers such a complete history of 100 years of trucking in the U.S.

The only flaw (if you want to find one) is that half the pictures are really too small. But this of course is to get more photos into the book. If all where as big as the other half, the book would probably have 600 pages (and the same time would be much more expensive).

I think at the moment you can't get a better buy if you look for a really good summary of a century of trucking.

I have cycled only a few of the book's listed road rides in the Hill Country but I am familiar with portions of several other roads in the Hill Country and West Texas via automobile. These are truly great rides with well-thought directions and information. It's so good that when Mr. Ford says you will have to "shoo" sheep and livestock from the road, it really must be done! I eagerly await even more rides with the next edition of the book.

Beautiful Country, Great Book

Review Date: 2002-05-26
Our Texas Hill Country is indeed a little-known source of beauty to outsiders. Because of its depressed condition for decades in the past it was overlook even by Texans. Today, however, we are able to see this area for what it is: rolling hills, tumbling streams and rivers, and a great view around so many curves in its small secondary roads. Though West Texas is well-known for Big Bend, the sheer area of this part of our State, combined with sparse population, means all of us can enjoy peace and solitude--this is where the South turns into the Southwest.

Mr. Ford's book reflects a love of the area, combined with excellent directions and documentation of sights. The book is divided into geographic areas, and within those areas, into tours of a day or longer. He has also done an excellent job of rating the difficulty of the tours, and why he has come to those conclusions.

Though I have only cycled a small amount of this area, I would also recommend this book for those who would like to tour by car. I've traveled almost this entire area by car and wish I'd had this guide then. Additionally, I found the photography very well-done--particularly in view of the price of the book.

This book is a valuable resource, and a terrific buy for the price!
