I found this in a Moab Bike shop.. Rim Cyclery or something like that.. anyway.. I had to buy it! It was the one I thought I ordered on Amazon before I got to Moab... but apparently the publisher just released a second edition and put the old edition's title on another book!!

This edition.. the "pocket guide" is the one you want if you're gonna actually get on a bike and ride.

It gives a good flavor description of the ride and the directions were spot-on... The profiles were good too. I really liked the maps.. they allowed good navigation. Not overwhelming .. just right.. This guy obviously put his heart and soul into this book.

Obviously this author's heart and soul reside on Moab's trails!

Buy this book!

This book has everything you need to get to Moab, pick a trail that is right for you and have a great time. There are overall technical ratings for each trail, individual technical ratings for each part of every trail, elevation maps, detailed overhead maps, instructions for particularly troublesome areas...it is all here. Someone said that it would not fit in a Camelbak, but it easily fits in one of the smaller pockets of my MULE. When I'm there next week, it will definitely not be left back at camp, but will be with me on every mile of slickrock that I ride. Do not buy Lee Bridgers' book! This one is less expensive, of higher quality and you can take it with you wherever you go.

This book caught my attention. The trail descriptions, maps, and difficulty ratings really provide a pretty good estimation of what to expect on each trail. (Which really comes in handy when matching up technical ability and endurance to particular trails.) Believe me, some of the trails mentioned are extremely challenging... and you don't want to get stuck on a trail that you aren't ready to ride. Please follow the advice given on the trails listed when it comes to your endurance/technical ability. This could mean the difference between injuring yourself or hoofing it back to the trailhead on foot.

If you have never ridden in or around Moab, this is a must-have book. Even as someone who has ridden in the area many times, I still use this to select which trail or trails I want to ride depending on the amount of time I have each day.

My advice: buy this book, read it, stuff it in your bag, and head to Moab. While it's too large to easily fit in a camelback, read through it at night while in the hotel planning out the next day's adventures.

My friends and I just got back from Valerie Willis's "Retro Roadtrip" and it was a blast! The guide was easy and fun to read, and very comprehensive. It's a perfect travel guide for bored college students with nothing to do this summer. We can't wait to go on another one of these roadtrips and hopefully they are all as incredible as the "Retro Roadtrip". I'm really glad my friend purchased this book!

Great adventures...fun reading!

MTV Road Trips appears almost daunting in size, but it is well written and fun to read, particulalry the chapter by Dara Bramson.

Great insights and hints, and the book is fast reading...never a dull moment.

I highly recommend.

I bought the book with one trip in mind and ended up being more interested in the American Highways section. There is so much info in this part of the book and it was easy to read. Except for New Mexico I had never considered a visit to any of these places. I didn't know that Nashville had a Parthenon, or how Branson got started. I like the way everything is organized, loved the suggestions for music, loved the humor, too. All in all a good read with or without the trip.MTV Road Trips U.S.A. (MTV Guides)

As a coffee table reference work, this book stands head and shoulders above the rest. The depth of coverage, the use of factory photos as well as current state of the art restoration examples and vintage racing pics make for an interesting read. Although a very small portion of the written information is not completely accurate, this is one book that any and all true muscle car fans should have in their library.

Shots of the car exteriors, interiors and under the hood. It's chock full of interesting information about the cars as well. Recommended for anyone who is a car buff!

This book touched my heart as soon as I read the first chapter.
It's easy to read with excellent continuity. Being in the IT field, I loved how it chronicled the technology. I also loved how it told the truth about the difficulty breaking the glass ceiling even when you're the smartest kid on the block.
This book is honest, moving, and triumphant. I can relate to all of Soraya's emotions - our circumstances may have been different, but the emotions are very much the same. I'm recommending it to all my friends.

An enthralling memoir that I didn't want to end!

I couldn't put book this down and as a rersult I read it until the wee hours. This wonderful book made me laugh and cry and left me longing for more.

Soraya overcame the imposed limitations of growing up in Brazil's male dominated society . She launched the first satellite in Brazil and became a famous Engineer. She came to America where she started all over by washing dishes. Soraya went to create and orchestrate one of the most successful websites for Microsoft.

Soraya is a brilliant visionary with a pioneers sense of adventure.
I wish there were more books of this caliber. I hope that Soraya continues to write more books.

What a message of hope and perseverance!

It made me think on the many things I did not do for lack of courage and now I fell like I need to focus on those goals and just do them. If you are looking for a good read, read this one. It shows how is important to fight for what you beleive in!

'Naked Relationships' encourages you to find out who you are and where you want to go. I enjoyed reading the book because learning more about myself is a good thing. It's not a magic wand but even people who've been married over 30 years can benefit from getting to know themselves more and learning to love themselves more. Read this book - do it for yourself.

It divides the city well into manageable parts and also has nice outlined walking tours of certain areas to get an overall view of the city. Overall, good information and very useful for a first visit to Paris.

I wasn't looking to study a huge encyclopedia type book, but I did want to know more about the plants I encounter on St. Thomas. This book was the perfect introduction providing not only visual references, but also practical information on where certain species are likely to be found, i.e. road sides, beaches, etc. Now that I have read through it, I find the need for a more thorough book, however this was the perfect start - just what I was hoping for.

I've been meaning to review this book for some time now. I've been travelling to the Eastern Caribbean for over twenty years; for the past few, it's been yearly. This book is one of the essentials for my journeys, like sun lotion and a passport. I swore at myself last year when I forgot it.
I travel for the sun and heat, of course, but rather than see the sites and take part in all the activities, I am happy just to be in the place, to see the islands, the people and their environment. Virginia Barlow's sweet book helps me ground myself every time I return. It's small and easy to carry and is one of the first books I turn to when I arrive.

Not Just a Field Guide, Surprisingly Interesting Reading
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-19
This short (150 page)book gives the reader an excellent introduction to the animal, plant and bird life of eight different types of habitats found on the islands of the Eastern Caribbean. The photos and illustrations are very good, but the text is what surprised me the most. Rather than simply providing a dry list of data points usually found in field guide species accounts, just about every species description is remarkably fascinating reading. The book's extensive bibliography shows that the naturalist author drew from a wide range of primary scientific sources to weave together uniquely interesting information regarding the inter-relationships of organisms in these neo-tropical environments. Most readers will welcome these brief but intriguing natural history accounts, and will be pleased that the author selected to describe only the most abundantly observed species. Personally, my only regret was that the book wasn't considerably longer. I have tried hard to find other, more in-depth, guides to the natural history of this region, but there simply don't seem to be any. To learn more about the region, one would have to research primary scientific sources, as this author has (thankfully) done for us, and beautifully synthesized her findings.

This is the map with the Buddha statue on the cover, you can't miss it. Nelles seems wants to give you a feeling as well as a cartographic representation. I like the cover because it's easy to spot the map when I need it. I bought this map for a motorcycle ride from Chiang Mai to Koh Chang via Bangkok. I am happy to report that everything was exactly where the map said it would be. The few times I found myself apparently nowhere the map helped me to find the closest towns for gas and lodging. I particularly recall needing to escape an oncoming thunderstorm while on a fairly lonely highway outside of Sa Kaeo near the Cambodian border. The map clearly showed a turn-off to a quiet little town with excellent facilities called Prachinburi. You want this map on your tour of Thailand.

We bought this book at the LA Festival of Books where we had come upon the first book last year. We purchased the book on Sunday and my 10 year old daughter had finished it by Tuesday. She is describing it for me here: The second story picks up where the 1st left off when Romeo awakes from the "death" of his first life. He tries to help a friend, Twinkletoes, who is having problems with his owners. Romeo continues to have difficulties with "The Alleys," or wild cats and their leader, Fiddle. Fiddle has a horrible plan to destroy the "Stics" forever.. Could the authors please hurry up with the 3rd book's release??

This map is really great for seeing the big picture of northeast rail. It's so much easier to use this map rather than trying to piece together various maps from the rail operators. It doesn't label every single subway station in NY and Boston because there's too many to fit onto a small enough map. However, it does list all the commuter rail and Amtrak stations on the east coast from Maine-Virginia. The map isn't geared to subway riders, but commuter and day trippers who want to go anywhere in the NE by rail. It's a laminated coated map so don't worry about it getting weak at the folds. It is quite old at 2001, but I suppose there's not enough demand to warrant a new version. Not much has changed since then. Plus, it gives routes being constructed so this map will still be good for many years.

A mass transit map-reader's delight!

I've always theorized that it's still possible to start out north of Boston and wind up near Richmond having travelled on nothing but metropolitan subways and commuter rail lines, filling in the occasional gaps with short hops on AMTRAK. This map will show you exactly how to do it. Beginning with the Nova Scotia ferries out of Portland and winding up at the Chesapeake Bay ferries near Newport News, Hedberg Maps' "Northeast USA Passenger Rail Travelers Map" gives you a detailed and legible depiction of virtually every subway, trolley, commuter rail, seasonal excursion, AMTRAK, and ferry line from New England through the mid-Atlantic, with inset maps of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington that provide even greater levels of information (though the New York City subway system is, by necessity, abbreviated for considerations of space). The current edition (2001) is the first, and while there have been several major route changes since then (new AMTRAK service to Maine, 9/11 subway closure/realignment at the World Trade Center), Hedberg Maps advises there are, unfortunately, no immediate plans for a second, updated edition until this "gem" of a map becomes better known and stimulates demand for a new version. Still, the 2001 edition is the best map of its kind out there (pre-folded, pocket-sized, and laminated as a boon to commuters). Any map and/or rail fan will pore over the "Northeast USA Passenger Rail Travelers Map" for many satisfying hours. This map reminds us how many alternatives remain (at least in the urban Northeast) to the tyranny of the overcrowded interstate highway and the over-stressed metropolitan airport.

Quick! You know the New York City subway system. How do you find the best Chinese food? Of course, not in Manhattan Chinatown but in Flushing Chinatown in Queens. Which train? Why the #7, of course, to the end of the line. Wait! I see a rail line to Port Washington with a stop at Flushing too. Quick where IS Port Washington, the end of the line? Have you ever found this place on a city map, in the telephone book? Of course not...it's too far out on Long Island! Only this compact RAIL map shows the way where city and state maps fail.

Quick! How do you find the best Russian borscht? Of course, not in Manhattan Midtown, but in Brooklyn's "Little Odessa" at Brighton Beach. Which train? Why the D & Q line, of course, Q's end of the line.

Quick! The cheapest way from Jacob Javits Center to LaGuardia (LGA)...take M34 bus to Broadway, N train to Astoria Blvd, M60 bus to LGA. It won't be a much faster 1-½ hrs but it will be darn sight cheaper than that $100 bill whisked out of your hand for taxi fare and still cheaper than a hotel-airport shuttle bus. Box and lug all those brochures and catalogs to the Midtown's Main PO (open til 9PM) and them mail them back home using USPS's Book (flat, cheapest) Rate. Then have fun eating and sightseeing the rest of your time off without a heavy backpack.

Quick! Want to hotel outside of pricy or dilapidated Manhattan but still accessible by subway. There aren't any hotels in Queens or Brooklyn! So take the Port Washington LIRR to the end of the line, hotels in Great Neck too. Cheaper motels in Elizabeth, NJ. Use the Path train to Newark and Jersey Transit towards Trenton to Elizabeth; much cheaper here.

Using Jersey Transit is another exercise in using your imagination. Quick! How do you get to the former AT&T R&D headquarters in Murray Hill (now a real museum piece)? Why, the Morristown Line and transfer to the Gladstone Branch. Hah! Did ja know that? Only this compact RAIL map shows the way where city and state maps fail.

Even the maps provided by NYC subway (if you can get them), NJT, and the Philly's SEPTA are not useful at all in trying to get from A to B. And the provincial city and county maps of suburban Philadelphia are a screaming rip-off. Like you were born as a homing pigeon with a built-in GIS birdbrain in your past life.

Quick! How do you get to IBM's R&D facility at Poughkeepsie and you lost your IBM interview portfolio or are coming in on the weekend holiday before your interview (Hah, no limo for you!). Of course, you take the Hudson Line. Ever try find these places on the map? Which station do you get off? What's the taxi number that serves that town? Where is a cheap local motel? Good luck!

Only this compact RAIL map shows the way where city, state, and even Yahoo and Google maps fail.

One side of the map shows the Amtrak Northeast Corridor from Portland, Maine on south to Richmond, Virginia. The other side highlights the cities, with largest space for NYC, then Boston, DC, Philly, and smallest for Baltimore. It is a heavy duty, laminated, 6-fold map, measuring 10" x 25." Small enough to whip out fast, durable enough to mark up with a crayon or water soluble white board marker.

The only thing I fault the publishers of this First edition is not having a good showing of the factory outlet centers, such as Secaucus NJ and no major Universities such as Princeton. Also there is no grid and index system.
