The scope of this book is incredible spanning nearly 1000 years of people making a pilgrimage. It also demonstrates how life-changing the experience could be. Michael Wolfe is a great writer and does a splendid job introducing each piece. Some of participants are simply incredible people- especially the Spanish Muslim from the 1700s (my memory escapes me as to his names). Each piece shows something new. Its definitely a book I'll be looking into again.

Amazing feast of insight and history of the hajj

This is easily one of the most splendid and accessible
English-language works on the hajj in recent years. For Muslims about to undertake the hajj, Wolfe's thousand-year history of the great hajj narratives of men like ibn Jubayr and years later Malcolm X will offer the richness of the pilgrimage, which was often as much a picaresque travel adventure as spiritual rite. Non-Muslims will get a great swath of Muslim intellectual history, freed of the sometimes needless formalism and apologia of recent hajj narratives and a wonderful encapsulation of Islamic civilization at its height, and of course the great beauty of the pilgrimage itself. Wolfe's introductions to the many narratives serve, perhaps unintentionally, as an excellent summary of Muslim history to the present.

For All Hajjis and Hajjis to be.

Michael Wolfe is an excellent writer. He is also a very convincing writer. For years my parents have been asking me to go for Hajj. I compromised and went for Umra. Mr. Wolfe's preface and the introduction convinced me that I should make this journey. I am preparing for the trip in year 2003. Inshallah.
This is an excellent book. Equally enlighting to Muslims and Non-Muslim. I recommend it.

I found this book to be a great resource for cities where I don't know anybody. It gave me a place to find affordable accomodations and allowed me to do other activities with the money it saved me by going to large chains. It will come in handy for a long time to come.

After my purchase of his book I took a two day vacation and in those two days I saved myself the cost of his book twice over. I recommend this tool to anyone and everyone, whether a cross-country sight-seer or a casual overnight traveller!

The Open Road is for everyone looking to take the big cities stress away... I got a copy from my brother and read it as fast as him... Couldn't stop!! It is wonderful!! Full of exciting situations, it makes you want to go backpacking in search of your place in the world. Anyone seeking for a positive change of life, anyone bored of working in a dead-end job, any nature lover, everybody should read this book. I like very much reading about expeditions and outdoor life, and I have read a lot. But this book has taken from very deep inside of me the feeling that there is a better life waiting for me, for everybody who really wants to improve his life. It is not a book about mysthic and religion. It is a book about true and joyfull life. So, take my advice and read it... You won't be disappointed!!

Douglas McKinley has written about the explorers. He has written about people who are willing to turn their backs on material objects and daily routines, in order to probe the soul of life. Another bonus is that Open Road has the best surfing prose I have ever read. It is a must-read book for everyone's Christmas stocking

As an avid mountain biker, I found this book to be inspiring and motivating, even if I will probably never ride half of the featured destinations (although I'm determined to try!). The writing is excellent, blending vivid descriptions of the terrain with a little history and geography, giving the reader a complete and appealing picture of each region. The pictures are beautiful and plentiful, and there are many resources listed for each trip including prices, difficulty ratings, bike shops, lodging, and additional information. Overall, an awesome book I'll probably read and refer to many, many times in the future.

The Soul of Mountain Biking

Review Date: 2001-07-17
Now I know what happened to BIKE magazine's soul. It has been reincarnated into something Da Vinci would be proud of. Okay, maybe I'm getting a little carried away with the hyperbole, but calling this a guide book certainly doesn't do it justice. In fact, if you are looking for just a guide book don't waste your money. Everybody and his brother makes a guide book, but no one has ever come closer to expressing what it means to ride than Rob Story has within these pages. Like the early years of BIKE magazine, this just makes you want to go out and explore the unpaved world.

While not a guide book, it has everything else to get you started on your own epic adventure. It lists the "must do" rides in any given area. In addition to rating the physical difficulties of the rides, a clever addition is rating the mental stress factors involved with the trips. Also appreciated is the non-bike related recommended reading of the area, along with trail guide books, and outfitting services. Again like the magazine, the photos are some of the best you'll see anywhere, regardless of the subject matter.

One of the great features is the diversity of the ride locations. There are a life times worth within, and they make you dream, drool, and connive of the ultimate exotic mountain biking vacation. While this may put some people off, the best part is that the majority of the rides are totally doable by anyone with a serious mountain biking habit.

Very well written and set out. While the material on US rides, ie Moab, can be found in much more detail elsewhere, the material on third world mountain bike treks is wonderful. Bhutan is a must for anyone's list of dream rides. The book is great starting point for great rides. You will of course need more detailed information, but this book shows you in a no nonsense way that mtb across the world is very doable, the costs and suggested tour companies and if you can do it on your own. A must get for mtb explorers.

I was provided with the opportunity to read this book and was surprised in the fact that this was the first I had heard another individual speak to the issue that electronic information should be deemed the master and paper should be considered transitory.
I am creating retention schedules that state exactly that. electronic information should be deemed the master and paper should be considered transitory
I like the fact that there are less reasons to keep records around than there are not using paper for managing information. This book is being passed around our office for others which I thought was an excellent idea for others to share as well.
I found it to be a very easy read and took it home on the weekend to peruse and take notes.
The statement that rang so true for me was that "employees must be trained to be accountable for their records"
I feel that in the government today not everyone truly believes that statement.
I like your inclusion of the websites for reference. I feel you and your company has done an excellent job with the research and you've captured the essence of future planning with electronic information. My biggest issue with this book is the price $$I feel for the amount of information that is in the book I would think that your company would be able to take 1/2 the cost and still be able to have a lucratic business and bring in business knowing full well of your success.

I was reluctant at first to start reading this book, when I did however I found it to be easy reading and interesting. I honestly wanted to keep reading.

I like it first because it is in a plain simple language that any one can follow. It provides an easy to follow step by step process to make electronic records master. The book lays out the plan for the skeptics' who believe nothing can replace paper. I like the examples, the comparison of the dirt road crossings and the information highway. I love the summary tips at the end of each chapter, which of course I had to write down. By the time I finished reading Paper Trails I was excited about electronic records, erms, and ecm. Why? Because now I have a clearer understanding of what they are how they work.

Concise, highly readable and immediately relevant are my top of mind reactions to Beelby and Roy's offering to the information overloaded, time starved records and information management professional. The business case for the wholesale adoption of electronic records management is expertly outlined and has the force of tried and true records management practice. A must-have title for anyone seeking the efficiencies of electronic records management and streamlined corporate compliance.

Corporate Peace of Mind

Review Date: 2006-01-10
The many stories and examples made the book very readable and accessible. It led me through the very complex area of document management and presented a step by step guide to identifying information management problems and implementing solutions. I particularly appreciated the insight that having an information management strategy will provide corporate peace of mind as well as a rapid return on investment.

This book made me aware that every document created, whether paper or electronic, might be considered a record and that every document must be filed in a system or deleted. It helped me to see the importance of making staff responsible for the documents they create, and that there must be a plan in place for saving, accessing and deleting documents. The authors explained the implications of current legislation and the costs and consequences of not managing information the right way.

I would recommend this book to any organization, large or small, that is considering improving the way it handles information or that is concerned with compliance issues.

Patrick Lennons newest work, Paradise Lost is an exciting historical novel based on events surrounding Fidel Castro's rise to power in Cuba. Lennon excells at capturing all the different points of view expressed by the different groups both in and outside of Cuba at that time. His hero gets involved when his brother is killed by an assasin's bullet marked for Fidel Castro while he was in Florida. Ramon sets out to avenge his brother and gets involved in the politics and the intrigue to the point he is routinely risking his life. By that time the CIA has decided he should help them, willingly or not and the stakes just keep getting higher.
A great story, by a great story teller! Exceptional Writing!

Written by former US Air Force pilot and hospital CEO Patrick Lennon, Paradise Lost is historical fiction novel about a Cuban man caught in the midst of power struggles within and beyond the borders of his nation during the mid-twentieth century. When his younger brother is mistaken for Castro and murdered by an assassin working for the Batista regime, Ramon seeks the assassin to exact revenge, but when he sees the cruel conditions in Cuba, he changes allegiance and helps Castro put an end to the Batista government. Later, relations between America and Cuba turn sour, and the CIA blackmails Ramon into running guns for anti-Castro forces. Despite his warning to the CIA that Castro has significant Cuban popular support, the CIA proceeds with the disastrous Bay of Pigs raid. A period of quiet for Ramon follows - until he is placed firmly at the center of US-Soviet tension over the installation of missiles, in what was most likely the greatest crisis of the Kennedy administration. A singularly absorbing and suspenseful tale.

Paradise Lost by Patrick A. Lennon is a Historical Fiction that is about Cuba and The Cuban Missile Crisis that starts shortly before President John F. Kennedy took office.

This book is an outstanding read from cover to cover. This book is informative, exciting, well written, with a lot of suspense and action, and much more. You will like Patrick A. Lennon's writing style.

Patrick A. Lennon has won two Short story contests. 'Paradise Lost' has been accepted for the 2007 Pulitzer competition and after reading this book I can see why.

Some other books this author has written are :
Tale Spinning, Wolf Creek, A Dose of Murder, and Kiss The Pilot.

I highly recommend Paradise Lost and plan to read some of this authors other books.

Paradise Lost

Review Date: 2006-12-01
After World War II, the United States were known as the saviors of the free world and entered a period of prosperity. Unbeknownst to the average American citizen, lines and boundaries had been drawn, territory had been claimed and there was an undercurrent of despotism on both sides of the Iron Curtain. The United States government was not above (and still isn't) lending a little aid of money, weapons and "consultants" to help certain countries with their revolutions, as long it seemed to be in America's best interest at attempting to slow the spread of communism. Whether or not the support America provided certain countries was in the best interest of the certain countries citizenship is another matter that didn't seem to be considered.

Paradise Lost is a story about revenge and ramifications. President Batista, dictator of Cuba puts a hit on young Fidel Castro, who is raising money in Key West Florida to support an army to over throw Batista's tyrannical regime. Carlos Molina, a Castro sympathizer, is mistakenly thought to be Castro and is shot and killed by an assassin Major Garcia. Ramon Molina, Carlos's older brother decides to seek vengeance for his brother's murder. In an exciting by the-seat-of-your-pants action scene Ramon tracks Garcia to Cuba. Upon his return from his vengeance quest Ramon is enlisted
as a gun-runner for Castro. Later he is coerced into working for the CIA while trying to balance his business and family life.

Lennon has successfully written from a Cuban American's point of view which lends a different but important perspective of an average person caught in the waves from Castro's overthrow of Batista reign, America's interest in Cuba, the Bay of Pigs Invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Any reader that enjoys a Tom Clancy novel minus the high-tech hardware and gadgetry should read Paradise Lost. It is an espionage thriller with a provincial realism and a human element that tugs at the heart and makes one reexamine their family and patriotic values.

John Milton's Paradise Lost is an epic poem about original sin, the fall of man and the loss of innocence. Patrick Lennon's Paradise Lost, shows us a loss of innocence when the blinders of ignorance are removed and we see behind the propaganda, rhetoric, double-speak and their consequences.

The basic material in this book, and its companion, Paul Keres: The Quest for Perfection (also available from Amazon) were previously published under another title. British GM John Nunn has updated the notes and added some games.

The result is a book that every serious chessplayer should have. Keres' deep notes will help players from Class C on up to improve their games and get more enjoyment out of chess.

Outstanding game annotations
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-15
This book contains Paul Keres' best games played in the period 1929-1950. And as one might imagine, almost all the games are against World class players. What sets this book apart from many others of its genre is the annotations. Another reviewer rightly mentioned that Keres' style of annotation is as good as Bronstein. Those who are familiar with David Bronstein's books will get the point. The book has around 250 pages and covers 50 of Keres' games. This might give you some idea as to how detailed the annotations would be(unlike the lightly annotated books that cover a players' 100 or more games in the same number of pages). The games are all Keres' wins but at no point one feels even the slightest hint of personal bias in his annotations. They are highly objective and very detailed. Keres clearly explains the plans of both the sides and devotes around 5-6 pages to almost every game. He gives detailed variations where necessary but nothing to overwhelm an average player.

The one slight dissappointment that I have from this book is that I expected it to be a complete autobiography of Keres' life. But Keres doesn't talk much about his life in general or shares any interesting chessic stories or incidents that might have happened in his life(unlike Tal in his autobiography). All he mentions is the tournaments and matches he participated in a given year and how he felt his standard of play was compared to other successful players. But this shouldn't keep anyone away from buying this book. This book would've been worth its price even if it had no autobiography. The set of games are worth studying.

Finally I would like to say that even though the games are highly annotated, a sound understanding of both tactics and basic chess strategy is needed. The level of the games is high and so I feel that this book will be most useful to players over 1700(uscf). Also the footnotes added by John Nunn are in no way a nuisance(as mentioned by another reviewer). I was amazed to see that after going over 35 games, there was no occassion when even a single variation given by Keres was completely wrong. All Nunn does is is add to what Keres had to say or point out another interesting idea or variation that Keres probably ignored.

In conclusion I would like to say that these games have been thoroughly scrutinized by their creator and there aren't simply many chess books that match this book's content. So you can't afford to miss it.

This is an incredible book. First off, the games alone standout by themselves. Paul Keres' style is crystal clear, without any particular weaknesses in his play. He handled all phases of the game well and was a great attacking and positional player. His games are very instructive for beginners to masters.

Second, his notes are amazing. Each chapter has a collection of few games from one phase in his career and he begins each with a very engaging essay on his thoughts and life during that time. You really get into his mind as he takes you through his ups and downs throughout his life and how he prepares for games. The notes to the games are thorough and engaging. You never feel like an idea, line or variation is left unexplained. I feel Keres was one of the best annotators to ever live.

Finally, the format and translation of this edition are excellent, as with most of John Nunn's reissues. I don't own the first issue, but I can say this one is extremely nice, if you don't mind Nunn's sometimes annoying footnotes. This is must have book, for those who want to study from it, or just enjoy the games. I'm saving up money for the second volume, "Quest for Perfection!"

Wow!

I have not finished this book, but I was moved to write a review of what I've read so far. Outstanding. I often hear that Alekhine was a great annotator. Bah, humbug! As far as I'm concerned Keres is the model of a perfect annotator, at least for a player below expert strength. The variations provided are plentiful and deep enough to provide food for thought without being overwhelming (unlike say Kasparov's MGP series, which has encyclopedic annotations of some games, which overwhelms the non-master). Beyond simply citing moves, Keres delves into the intricacies of the positions, explaining plans and strategies. This book will help anyone's game improve. Can't wait to finish, and I'm going to buy Vol 2 immediately.

This was Done by Henry Rasmussen who I was told sadly passed away years back. Good Book. Lots of Classic Petes. The newest one even in the revised book is 1989!. so no New "Beterbilts' in this book after 89' sadly. But a Good Book for a Peterblt Library. Some Good Reading. And Alot of Pictures.
I understand MBI is doing another Peterbilt Book by another author. So im hoping for more in depth and updated ones! in the meanwhile this and Warren A Johnson's book, and Ron Adams books will do! Classy book for a Classy Truck. And Hopefully MD MORGAN'S BOOK.

Wonderful to see this back in print[.]

This book has 128 glossy pages, lots of color and a slightly bigger footprint than 'Mack Trucks" by the same author. Still plenty of photos severed by the book's binding though.

Superb photography is very up-close, text informative, and the subjects varied. Ten chapters all up, with the last chapter including production numbers and model designations. The other nine chapters are entitled: Class from '39, Five decades of progress forges product of distinction, Rare survivor resurrected, Cavalcade of Classics, On the Road, At The Truck stop, On the Job, At The Show, and Modern Mastodons (new- generation Peterbilts)

Peterbilt owners, restorers, collectors and truck enthusiasts in general have been given another chance to include this classic in their collection. Highly recommended

I love this map. fits right in your backpocket and is perfect for walking around where you don't know your way. The only downside to the small size is, well, the small size. I wear reading glasses of +1.75 strength, which is not too much, but without my glasses it's a struggle to read it. For those who don't need reading glasses, it will be perfect.

This readable, pop-out map is everything you'll need!

I took a trip up to Philadelphia with some friends and the friend we were visiting gave us this map to use when we go around. This map is AWESOME. It is everything you'll need to get around Philadelphia and it fits right into your pocket, literally.

SIZE ASSESSMENT
I first kept it in my purse and it was actually kind of cumbersome to constantly take out, so we started keeping it in jacket or pants pockets, and it rested there easily. Also, it's very small and discreet, so you don't feel like a tourist-moron when you have to bust it out to figure out where you are.

MAP ASSESSMENT
It has maps of the greater Philadelphia area, the Historic District (where the Liberty Bell, etc. are) and the Subway routes. They even suggest a "walking tour" that you can take to visit all of the places around the Historic District (takes about 1.5 hours). When it folds out, there is about an inch margin on either side that goes past the protective cardboard cover, and the mapmakers use this space to detail information about the best hotels, restaurants and sightseeing attractions. Everything is easily legible and the legend is also easy to find.

OTHER NOTES
I liked the map so much that I wanted to buy one for when I go to Stockholm this summer, but the typical sites (Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble) garnered no results or results that had extremely high shipping charges. However, I finally found a site that sells all the Pop-Out maps available (http://www.mapeasy.com/prod_polist.html) and even charges only $2 for shipping. After contemplating paying anywhere from $11 (in the Buy New/Used part of Amazon) to $20 (Amazon.com.uk), I was happy to get it under $9 (total) from this reputable website. Also, it's easier to find every single one, since they're in a list style, on this webpage. No more searching for me! I'll always know where to look to get my next pop-out map.

Excellent, compact, easy to ready and carry!

This is an excellent map.
It is detailed, but the writing is clear (no need for the magnifying glass).
It has Downtown Philadelphia in a popout map on one side (which includes some of the major shopping areas!) and Historic Philadelphia in a popout map on the other side. It includes a walking tour around Independence Mall. The back has a handy at-a-glance guide to Downtown Bus & Trolley Routes.

It has all the information you will want, popout the section you need and it folds back down again and can fit in a pocket or purse.

This is a superb book which is a very easy read but packs a powerful punch. The various stories are very interesting and give a good insight into one monk's sabbatical year. The meditations and quotes from the Rule of St Benedict are very apt and tie in easily with the Mass readings of the day. But it is not just for Lent - Lent is not long enough to do justice to the book - it can turn into a life changing read. A wonderful book which I thoroughly enjoyed and have given as presents to a few friends.

A special journey with a new friend

This little book revolutionized my Lent and hopefully my life. I longed for the morning to come and go places with Father Albert...geographically and spiritually. He challenged me areas that I did not know the Holy Spirit needed to speak to. May you be blessed as I was.

Great book for Lent

Our church study group is using this book and we all love it. The traveling monk does a great job of immersing the reader into that particular place and the days study or reflection. The book is good for indivduals or groups.

A delightful and insightful travel guide for our journeys

I have read many, many books of this type: ones that guide us through the spiritual journey. This is absolutely one of the very best. As a spiritual director and occasional writer myself I tend to be critical of many publications, mainly because they sound like so many others or actually say so little. Fr. Albert's is fresh, clearly written, entertaining, and very perceptive--a travel guide on two levels! Wonderful! I've never been inclined to write a review for Amazon before, but this book I'd like for thousands of people to read. What that might do!
