High technical level. A collection of papers from mechanical engineering on the design of internal combustion engines.

A little hard to absorb
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-26
This book teaches about high performance engines by presenting case studies which are actually taken from SAE papers. Due to the style of writing used, it is a little hard to absorb. I find myself having to reiterate many of the sections to understand the concepts completely. I prefer reading texts that get to the point more quickly. I know that many of the concepts presented are interrelated, but there is little attempt to relate them. Many of the illustrations and graphics are not printed clearly (some graphs are not readable). It does present a fair amount of information that is useful, its just a little hard to extract.

It was a touching book. I'm glad that she tried to figure out what brought the two friends apart.

This book is about Michael (remember the whole Michael/Maria engagement story? This is the same guy) who is now dating a girl named April (who I don't remember from any other book.)Michael is obsessed with racing, and although April likes it as well, she'd like to do other things like go to the movies some time. Michael also hates a guy named Artie, who used to be his best friend, and is now his sworn enemy. So when April and Artie start hanging out, Michael is beyond [angry]. April decides to find out what started the feud to begin with. This is an okay book.

Covers all the bases...to 1989 that is
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.

Relatively complete coverage of Honda motorcycles to 1989. Anyone with a passing interest in motorcycles and/or Honda should find the diversity of these machines quite interesting. Unlike many motorcycle books, this is an ACTUAL book, with more words than pictures! Provides worldwide perspective without shortchanging U.S. models (as many "motorbooks" are produced and/or written in the U.K.).

However, the book is overpriced at list. Also, it really should have at least an extra chapter added to cover the last ten years of very important motorcycle evolution (and resurgence in popularity). But to 1989 it is a great resource.

A highly detailed look at Honda Motorcycle history

Many books on motorcycles abound with glossy pictures but contain little facts. This slim volume by Roland Brown is quite the reverse. The majority of photos are original B&Ws, not staged fashion shots, and there is ample text. It is not a coffee table book, it is a real book! The history begins with Soichiro Honda's start after WWII and traces the company's progress to 1989. For the real motorcyclist there is plenty of technical detail which is used to show the evolution from one machine to the next, rather than being just tabulated facts. The story of the development of motorcycles, as we now know them, and the fascinating saga of a multinational company's growth, make excellent reading. My only complaint is that a book this slim (150 small pages), really doesn't warrant a price tag of $25. Never the less, I still bought it, and was glad I did.

Joey Dunlop, His Authorized Biography
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-25
I've been a subscriber to Cycle News in the US for many years. My original subscription was for Cycle News East, for those who know, this was quite a few years ago. Before cable TV my only information conserning moto racing on the "Continent" was through these pages. My only connection to racing on "The Island" was through a man by the name of Eddie Labelle, a well respected racer himself in his community, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA who spoke quite respectfully of these races. I knew absolutely nothing about Joey Dunlop. I remember receiving my copys of Cycle News through the time that Joey Dunlop was providing so many people in the world with his special talent. There would be small bits of information that claimed "Joey" wins another one! I still knew nothing about Joey Dunlop. I remember reading about Mike The Bike in retrospect articles, and in Motocourse. I followed the FIM Moto Circus through articles I've read from 79 until now and could tell you about most racers of the time, but I still knew nothing about Joey Dunlop.
I still do not know Joey, but I think I know Himself much better than I did before purchasing this book. Do yourself a favor and get to Know Joey by purchasing this book. You will not only help yourself by knowing...... well, Joey, but you will also be helping his family as all of the proceeds from the sale of this book goes directly to his family. This is a resrectful man that we all need to know.

Factual and nicely produced

This is a factual review of Joey Dunlop's career. It is a very nicely produced hard back with great photos. It is probably a must for any Joey Dunlop fan. However, it is not anywhere near as absorbing or personal as "Joey Dunlop, A Tribute" by author and TT winner Ray Knight. Now that is a fabulous book!!!!

the book is an above average Motocourse which is great, but the dust jacket is defective, seems like it is coming apart, and covered with a wierd film, people tend to collect these, so it probably warrants a return, has anyone had a simliar experience?? are they all like this??

Great Information and Good Presentation

Review Date: 2007-07-03
This is not the perfect book about MotoGP or Superbike, but it is rather close. The facts and information are very good in this book...the presentation is also well-done and the photographs are wonderful. I only wish that there were more statistical information about races past. (I bought the "MotoGP Results" annual for that purpose.) However, I would definitely recommend this to the veteran race fan who needs to get his or her race information fix in a rather large coffee table book! If you like photos, this is a good book for you!

Interesting, but flawed

I've been on a tear buying up TT related books this year. This is #2 of 4. David Wright's book was an informative read that did keep my attention. It had enough raw data mixed in with anecdotes to be interesting. What I was disappointed in were some of the pictures chosen for the book. I don't know if it's printing costs that caused this, but there were a number of modern pictures that I know were color, but printed in black and white in the book. After seeing the original color shots, the B&W versions were a lot less impressive.

Pictures aside he did cover some things I had not yet read. The prize money thought the years. Where it came from, and to whom it went, was very interesting to me. The sidebars sprinkled around the book were nice touches of extra information as well. I'd recommend it as a good addition to anyone's TT library.

This book contains the only cut-away illustration of the famous Moto Guzzi V8 that I've ever seen. I was also impressed with the amout of historic photos used to show the progress and path of GP motocycle development. The only area I felt the book was lacking was current development. Very little current technology, other than Honda's big-bang engine were mentioned. All in all though, the book is well worth the reading.

I was looking for a Yamaha or streetbike only calendar and have been unable to find one. So this was a next best choice, it has more cruisers than streetbikes. It's fairly large too, not your standard size calendar. But otherwise, I'm happy with it.
