They Are What They Do

The late sports columnist Jimmy Cannon when speaking of athletes once wrote "they are what they do". Meaning do not make the mistake of automatically elevating athletes or try to make them what they are not.Bobby Isaac, while one helluva racecar driver was simply a boring man. That doesn't make him bad but it does make him a tough subject for a biography. And, whew does that come across in this book.To his credit the author does not try and make Isaac larger than life.He simply tells us how Bobby did on the racetrack...in painstaking...and too often tedious detail.Ever watch the finance shows that are on TV during the day ? The ones where the stock symbols and their prices scroll at the bottom of the screen. That is what I was reminded of when I read much of this book. When Isaac raced NASCAR ran a 45-50 race schedule and by god the reader gets the results of every stinkin one.(yawn)I certainly want to know about the wins but do I need to know Bobby qualified 14th. and finished 16th. in some 200 mile, dirt race in a long defunct backwater racetrack ? I think not.But again, with so little to work with what choice did the author have ? If you are the hardest of hardcore NASCAR fan you may enjoy this book.If not pass it by.

For over $25.00 dollars you too can own a book no bigger than a Golden Book of children's tales. By adding the 'Nascar' title to your product you too can overcharge anyone because what trailer is complete without its own Nascar memorial?

The calendar titled Facts & Fun...... In my opinion, there is too many Facts and not enough Fun. The majority of the pages include facts of the older era of nascar.

I bought this and thought it wasn't a good deal for the price. Moreover, it is not for any child over three, which people should know before they buy it.

First of all, I HATE the BIG UGLY picture of American Car Racer...do not know his name, on the cover of the book. Second, I hate NASCAR and Cheap political HOT WHEEL junk I do not even care for looking at. The book should focus on HIGH QUALITY COLLECTIBLE BRANDS ONLY. What a waste of paper~!!!

This book was WEAK!

I agree that this book has very little to offer someone who is interested in diecast collecting and diecast values. The book contains some interesting photos and NASCAR history, but mostly sizzle with very little steak. Save your money.

A big disappointment

Very disappointing! This book has very little information on the value of nascar diecast and it doesn't have pictures to correspond with the item description. It lists the cars by team rather than just by dirver so it has maybe 10-15 max car models per TEAM. If you are into Nascar collectibles you know there are lots more than just 10-15 per team. This book leaves a lot to be desired.

We agree, Kevin Harvick and Dale Jr. should have been on the cover. Personally, I wouldn't put Biffle's picture on the last page let alone on the cover ! Race fans forever !

Where is Earnhardt?

I was going to buy this calendar, I will usually buy any Nascar memorabillia sight unseen, but as I enlarged the photo of this calendar I noticed there wasn't an Earnhardt on the cover. I can understand that Earnhardt SR would be left off since it is a 2002 calendar, but where is Dale Jr or Kevin Harvick? You've got all the points leaders: Gordon, Rudd, Jarrett, Wallace, Stewart but where are numbers 8 and 9th in points? Why are Greg Biffle and Jeff Green worthy of the cover of a nascar calendar?

Obviously total ... blackballing!!! I definitely won't be buying this calendar! You should be ashamed!

I was very disappointed with this book because it did not include the 1992 Champion Alan Kulwicki. To me his work ethic and perserverance was a great roll model for children and young adults. I think it was a shame that he was omitted and I returned the book for that reason.

Aweful Artwork, horrible examples
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-08
If you want to really learn to draw realistic cars, then get "Creating textures in colored pencil" by Gary Greene. He has some excellent examples in there that will "wow" you.

But, Lee Hammond's artwork in ALL of her books suck. She seems to be a beginner herself. I guess for the beginner the artwork looks attractive, or because it lacks depth or the complexity of detail, they don't feel intimidated and buy it. But, you know what, she is a BAD example and beginners should really learn from good examples. You should learn it the right way the first time. Just learn how to draw well first, then buy some other basic colored pencil books by other artists and NOT Lee Hammond. I mean unless you're just looking to please mom and dad.

You know some of the work in this book looked like she used crayola crayons. The portraits she does look kind of plastic. She just does not know how to render textures very well. She does not know how to make skin look real, or a car look like shiny metal as it really is. These are just some examples of what I mean. There are other colored pencil artists that will teach you like Lee Hammond claims she can teach you. But, they really can teach you to make skin look like skin and metal look like metal. If you really compare her work to other colored pencil artist's. You will see what I'm talking about. When you do, ask yourself this question, "Do I really want Lee Hammond to teach me?

Check out the Colored Pencil Society of America's CPSA [...], you won't find Lee Hammond there. Some of those artist's actually have books selling on Amazon to teach beginners!! Vera Curnow, founder, Gary Greene, Ann Kullberg, Janie Gildow, Kristy Kutch, etc. So, don't be discouraged when you see the work on CPSA's website, be inspired.

We had the 2007 version of this book because our son is a HUGE Tony Stewart fan. He liked it so much that we ordered the 2008 version as soon as it was available. When we finally received the book (the release was delayed several times) it was such a disappointment. I'm not sure what the hold up was because they basically just copied last years book. The pages for Stewart and Hamlin are IDENTICAL to the previous version. I would have thought a new book would have updated pages and different activities. Even the puzzles from the 2007 version were IDENTICAL. We haven't looked at the CD yet, but I'm sure it is exactly what was in the 2007 CD. Don't waste your money if you have a previous version.
