Very simple and down to earth, but fun, informative and really quite interesting. Yes, I am sure there are books with more detail, more "stuff", but this book gives you the basics of what you need to know to make all the pieces fit that much better when watching or attending an NASCAR event. A fun little book with some good information.

I liked the book, but, it was written on the reading level of a 10 year old. It is very hard to take a book seriously that is this basic. There are better choices for Nascar books.

We watched Jeff Gordon race on a quarter mile dirt track in Lawrenceburg, IN when he was fourteen years old. In many way Jeff exemplifies the subtitle of this slick publication from Life.
Time-Warner has a publication on many subjects and each have the same style, heavily illustrated with glossy top notch photos and surprisingly some very good information. It does lack an index for finding a favorite without reading a section.
A brief survey of all phases of racing and the men and women that induce the magic of speed. It is not one of the great annals on American racing, but it is a great way to spend time during the commercials.
We wanted to include this volume on our Listamania for Dirt Track Racing, but could not access it other than through a search under dirt track racing.
Nash Black, author of "Qualifying Laps" and "Sins of the Fathers."

The earliest racing in Europe and the U. S. was on the open road. In Rhode Island, in September 1896, eight four-wheelers lined up at a horse-racing over for what would be the world's first track race.
In the first decade of the 20th century, in 1903 in Florida they started thirty-two years of land-speed trials on the hard-paked sand of Ormond Beach. Racing swept the country. It started on April 24, 1908, in New York as a Stock Car Race, the first on average town and country roads. On March 13, 1910, Los Angeles had its own race at Ascot Park, the last (100-mile) dirt-track race staged there.
In the early days of racing, cars were almost exclusively playthings for the wealthy. The Indy races started on a smaller scale on June 20, 1902 at the State Fairgrounds. In 1909, the races there were still short, but they decided to build a Speedway of 500 miles which was finished in 1911. We now have a NASCAR racetrack at Bristol, Tennessee.
In the 1955 movie, 'Rebel Without A Cause,' the photo shows a young Natalie Wood giving her "good luck" shake to James Dean as he starts a drag race. Mickey Rooney starred in a racester movie called 'The Big Wheel' in 1949. Of course, everyone knows 'Thunder Road' filmed on the hilly, curvy roads around East Tennessee in 1958, which starred Robert Mitchum. In 'American Graffiti' in 1973, we saw a race of the Fifties Chevies and one fancy roadster. Elvis drove one in 'Viva Las Vegas' with Ann-Margaret as his co-pilot.
Today, NASCAR is one of the biggest businesses there is in America. Some years ago, I met Darrell Waltrip as he was induced into the Sports Hall of Fame in Nashville (the first race car driver to earn that honor) and asked for his autograph to give to Zachary. His son has gone on to keep the image alive.

I started reading Harlequin's NASCAR novels for two reasons, I love to read and I love NASCAR. I have read a few of their titles and this one is just okay. The main character is the mom of a fast rising NASCAR star. My issue is that she doesn't know about, or really seem to care about NASCAR which means there is not enough action in the book for me. It's a nice read for someone who casually watches the sport and likes romance novels.

Stanford University offers eighteen year old science genius Michael McIntyre a full scholarship to the euphoria of his single mom Tess. However NASCAR racing team owner Sam Kinkaid thinks the teen has the talent to be a superstar and offers him a position as a driver. Over his mom's objections, Michael chooses driving the oval instead of going to college.
Mother and son travel to Charlotte where he begins his NASCAR career with incredible success. Tess, who planned to loathe Sam, finds him caring and concerned about his new employee. As she falls in love with her son's employer; he reciprocates. However, both have other concerns that place their growing relationship on suspension as Michael proves immature allowing fame to go to his head.
This terrific family drama combines a coming of age subplot with a romance between two middle aged protagonists. Michael is terrific as he discovers women and alcohol, but not tolerance and control until he almost throws it all away. Tess and Sam put their love on hold because they fear for Michael as his choices have been abominable. NASCAR takes a back seat to the lead trio.

Ok here is the scope the NASCAR novels tend to be G-rated fun novels to read. This novel was very good until about 3/4 through the book. Sandra is PR person and Gideon is a NASCAR owner. There is some good heat from the couple but Sandra becomes too needy and demanding . She insists that Gideon must promise forever. Now this is the reason the book almost flew across the room in frustration. Sandra's father has early Alzheimer's and Sandra feels she might become sick as well. She tells Gideon she wants children - if she is upset she could become sick and she wants to have biological children??? If you were my friend I would suggest you pass - there is a lot of fun NASCAR novels don't waste your time.

Public Relations Specialist Sandra Jacobs struggles to satisfy her unimpressable client, Gideon Taney, owner of Taney Motorsports as she needs this job, but so far nothing has worked. When his NASCAR driver Will Branch fails to arrive at Olivia Winton Show where he was to be the guest of honor, three cups of coffee does not abate the trepidations she feels when Taney arrives. Someone must take the fall for this embarrassing debacle on the top breakfast morning TV show so Taney fires Jacobs.
Sandra knows how much she needs this client to pay for her father's Alzheimer's medical care so she refuses to slink away. Besides she feels strongly she did everything right as she had worked hard to obtain this coup; it was not her fault that Will pulled his DNF (did not finish). As she struggles to stay afloat, bossy Gideon is impressed with her fortitude, which soon turns to love.
Readers will be FULLY ENGAGED with this fine NASCAR romance due to the strong relationships between the lead couple and within her family. The actual strength of the tale is the contrast between the seriousness of her father's mental fading away vs. the humor of the relationship between the Motor Medias Group member and her client. Abby Gaines provides a wonderful mostly off track romance.

A Tongue and Cheek Guide to Winning the "Heart" of NASCAR Guys

The Girl's Guide to Winning a NASCAR Driver ("Winning") was a humorous, easy read through. I personally think Allison's The Girl's Guide to NASCAR ("GG2N"), is way better. I actually bought "Winning" after reading "GG2N" . I am fairly new to NASCAR (just got into it within the last year). I was hoping to find out some more information about NASCAR in this book.
"GG2N" was very easy to read and broke down the sport to make it more understandable to use newbies. Plus had funny "tongue and cheek" side notes that made the reading entertaining (i.e. cutest rear end in NASCAR, who would be the perfect date).
I was hoping more of it would be in "Winning". However, if focused upon what was appropriate attire at NASCAR races (like common sense doesn't tell you that). It does give a very brief description of NASCAR's history, but nothing like in "GG2N".
If you are someone who is interested in finding out about how the wives and guys of NASCAR met, then "Winning" is for you! It also gives you hints for where to get driver autographs (again for those individuals who like that sort of thing), and how to get pit passes. "Winning" does have some interesting recipes that I might eventually try out for NASCAR theme parties. Also if you take it as the satire it is, it does have some general words of wisdom when dealing with guys in general (not necessarily NASCAR/sports ones).
However, if you want a fun guide to read that breaks down stuff in NASCAR for us ladies, definitely get Allison's The Girl's Guide to NASCAR book! "GG2N" gives a nice breakdown of NASCAR's history, gives information about the cars on the track, and gives an awesome breakdown (including maps) of the different race tracks.
So "track" it down - buy "GG2N" or "Winning" depending on your "driving" goals! You'll be sure to get the "checkered flag"!

In the interesting and involved book, Nascar Hammer Down by T.B Calhoun, drivers and crewmembers describe their lives of being involved with racing. The author has written many books such as, Rolling Thunder, The Grove, Race Ready, Speed Demon and Spinout.
There are two facts about the book that stood out while I was reading. One of them was that it was very interesting, like when it talked about all the different jobs that take part in being a Nascar driver and crew member. Also, when the author talks about the involvement Nascar members lives entail. Another fact is when the story was suspenseful. An example is when two kids hired a man and woman to find a treasure and the couple turned out to be criminals.
Through out the whole book the author has explained the lives of Nascar drivers and crew members. He talked about the specific jobs that the crew members had. For example, one of them was being an overflow person who caught the gas that would overflow from the tank. The person would also try to run with the car as long as they could before they would get hurt. Also when the author talked about the drivers and how they need to have so much concentration. Another thing is that they have to know how to communicate with the crew members using headset radios.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I hope that I can read the rest of T.B. Calhounýs collection. Following that, I recommend this book to kids in the age range of 10-14 year olds. The reason for this is that kids below the age of 10 probably wonýt be able to follow or understand the story. And kids over the age of 14 probably wouldnýt be interested because some of them already have careers in mind.

All four authors in the book evidentally know their nascar material. I am a Nascar Fan and I like to read. Even though the characters are fictitious the terminology used in the stories were very accurate. Each story was just the right length. At the end of each story it gives you the next book each author will be writing and what time to expect it in the stores. I will be looking forward to each book.

Ok, this book would have been alot better had it been coffee table sized. As it is, the photos are nice and the book is laid out with a few pages devoted to each year in NASCAR. Overall, a good begining book for those interested in NASCAR.
I Bought it for my dad (as he loves NASCAR). Had I thought about it and seen it was a small book, I may have gone for a different book. The book is THICK, but would have been better larger. Lots of color and B&W photos. Good layout with info on the big events of each year.
