Flora R.Levin has one of the keenest and most perceptive minds around. What sets her writing apart from other classicists is her clear and unpretentious style infused with human qualities. She has the ability to take the reader by the hand, so to speak, and infuse him with her own passion for her subject. "The Manual of Harmonics of Nicomachus the Pythagorean" is the creation of a profound scholar and a cultivated, sensitive musician.

America's Masterpieces

When Bill Gates bought a George Bellows oil for twenty-seven-and-a-half million dollars in November of 1999, the national media at last took notice of what may be the most important genre of American art - the Ashcan period of the early 1900's. This wonderful book captures the lives, times, and works of the six artists who brought the streets of turn-of-the-century New York City to thrilling life. Bellows, Sloan, Henri, Glackens, Luks, and Shinn shared a collective talent and daring unseen before or since in the United States, and the book presents their best works in gorgeous color. It also delves into both the men's and the city's history to place the art in context.

Alfred Lord Tennyson once praised Rudyard Kipling for his 'divine fire.' Of the six artists here, Bellows, Sloan, and Henri clearly possessed that fire.

Bellows's unflinching depiction of New York's seedy side reveals a city simultaneously frightening, comical, and beautiful. Sloan's more affectionate touch finds warm delight in the common and mundane. The vitality of Henri's portraits is nothing short of remarkable.

If you buy this book for nothing else, buy it for Sloan. Beautiful, accessible, challenging paintings. And you won't find yourself in a competition with Bill Gates. =)

A rare insight and valuable method: highly recomended.

In the early 19th centuary Joseph Lancaster used peer tutoring to provide affordble humane schooling. That method fell into disrepute due to the wrote nature of learning observed.

Without reference to the past, the authors developed a peer tutoring method from the "writers workshop" system. Their focus being to improve the quality of critical reasoning and creative writing in modern first world elementary/primary school classes.

Their method has fundamental similarities to both the Lancastrian system, and to the use of senior students as tutors in the Oxbridge system at university level. They report plausible results showing substantial improvements in learning by ordinary ten year olds in Hawaii.

The outcome would suggest that pre-teen children are capable of much greater responsibility and intellectual activity than is commonly supposed. It would appear that, with appropriate use of social "scaffolding", mutual peer tutoring can produce results otherwise attainable only by unaffordably low pupil:teacher ratios.

super hip-sounding minor blues...

this is the companion vol. to bloom's major blues book. it's the same thing, only minor. that is to say, tricky voicings that are fun to analyze
and play, once the technique is brought up to speed. rhythmic examples on the cd are tops and fun to play over. the information in the book/cd is well-laid out and easily digested. the musical benefits were immediate. what makes this a great learning/practice book is that it's challenging and rewarding concurrently. can't ask for much more than that from a book.

a fresh sound essential for any student of modern blues.

This article, written by one of the most attractive women on the planet, is sooooo good. It is scholarly, funny, brilliant and a joy to read, and the sexy parts are, well, darn sexy. I don't think i have ever read anything better than this, including Gone With My Wind by Orson Wells, or David Kopperfield, by the noted Dutch author, Charles Dikkens. Too bad this is out of print.

This text is a great resource for any teacher who wants or needs to use music in their classroom. Many times as music educators we are expected to teach in areas we do not feel the best at. As a music teacher this will add to your confidence and give you creative ideas for class. As a classroom teacher, it will help you understand music and music notation beyond what your students need so that you feel confident to teach the basics to your students and use music as a supplemental tool in your teaching. I highly recommend this text.

The quality of both the book and the recordings in this set is excellent. The activities are so flexible that I use the kit for both a college-level "music in the classroom" course and a kindergarten music class. The book consists of worksheets designed by Gwen Hotchkiss to teach a variety of musical and interdisciplinary skills--everything from rhythm reading to spelling animal names. It is simply an excellent resource!

With its beautiful photographs and the variety of music discussed, this is the perfect music appreciation text for the high school level!! It covers a variety of musical careers and performers/composers. The music is not approached in the traditional "boring" way, and students get excited about what they are learning about. A must-have for any high school!!!
