An intimate insight on one man's love of life and family

This very touching insight describes a parents intimate journey in their love for their child. It is interweaved with brilliant passages that can touch anyone's soul, even a non-parent like myself. This new author's first expression is incredibly inspiring, to say the least, and hopefully he will take on other subjects in the future. You cannot read this book without thinking of several people in your life who need it as a gift.

All Single Moms and Single Dads Should Read This Book.

As a single mom, I strongly recommend this insightful book to all single moms and single dads. This Manual for The Good Life will assist parents in thier everyday parenting role as they read the values expressed by the author to his daughter as she enters this new phase of her life, marriage. The book made me laugh, cry, reflect, and think about the important things in life. If all parents could hold these values as well as impart them to their children, our society would be in a much better place in the new millenium. Also, I go back and re-read favorite sections of the book to get myself focused, energized, and centered to parent a 7 yr old son. It's a must read for all parents of all ages.

What a great book written from the heart. More authors should do the same. Mr. Mantis may have hit upon a secret formula here in that he wrote it from the heart as a wedding gift to his daughter to begin with. This book made me laugh. And I confess I got a bit teary-eyed at times too. As a father of three children I could follow along easily with the content. The message within the book will hit home with parents everywhere. I recommend that all moms & dads alike read it.

All Dad's should have this book.

In a world filled with stories of "deadbeat dads" and absentee fathers, this is a warm and hopeful work. A single father weaves delighful tales and simple, on target advice to his beloved daughter. The author writes beautifully, from the heart, and strikes a chord with anyone who is a parent. You will find yourself smiling, crying, and anxious to share it with someone you love. Read it soon and discover the joy for yourself!

A poignant story that successfully does the improbable and sifts the essence of the kalahari desert culture of the bushmen with the epitome of western culture in New York.

A moving tribute to what makes us human through the eyes of both cultures. I highly recommend this as well as Van der Post's "A Story Like the Wind".

A unique book. A true story that reads like science fiction.

I loved this book. It is very short and can be read in a sitting, but it is really profound. The clash of African and American cultures is depicted with great tenderness, with no judgment about which is better. The courage of the bushman is great.

Wise, inspiring, meaningful...

A beautiful account of a period in Van Der Post's life which tries to demonstrate the imponderable workings of love, of living myth and the weaving together of diverse lives into a single, greater synthesis. A profound, wordy and at times, utterly brilliant work.

A very intriguing story about the importance of myth in everyday life. At times, the writing is brilliant, poetic and powerful. At other times, it's more than a bit confusing. But it's a book that's definitely worth reading.

Prayer Power is great way to help kids pray. Jilly has an awesome way of communicating so both kids and adults can understand how easy it is to pray to our loving God. It brings a smile to my heart! I love that there is also an eLIVE book, a free audio book download.

You will be captivated by these many stories of intrigue and mystery, and dumbfounded by the sophistication of the characters. All of the five stories compell you with their multiple plots. Kotzwinkle's writing will have you reading all day long and talking about this book for weeks. A turn of the century bug's life, but the writing is ten times more sophisticated.
This summary is about the last story of this book. Mantis and Hopper are trying to find the emperor's crown and at the same time Mantis has a bet with Walking Stick to see if Mantis can solve the three greatest mysteries of Bugland. Suspicion is starting to brew in the emperor's elite hornet bodyguard force.
I would recommend this book to anybody who likes allegories. This book makes the characters feel like real humans.

Probably one of the greatest books i've ever read. the way Will makes a whole world of bugs come to life and the way Joe draws the bugs looks like they're real.

The collection of stories is about a Sherlock Holmes type Praying Mantis and his side-kick Dr. Hopper(a lot like watson.) Mantis likes to go on adventures and Hopper likes to cook and eat. When the detectives aren't at home they're somewhere int he bug world.

You should buy it ...

This book was excellent! IF you like the Sherlock Holmes kind of mystery stuff, than you'll love this book. I liked this book so much because it's really easy to get into. It's lots of fun to read because you can try to solve the mysteries yourself. I learned how to be observant when trying to solve problems. I also learned to never give up, even when things aren't going your way, to stick through thing till the end. I rate this book a five, on a sclae from one to five. I gave "Trouble In Bugland" such a high rating because I found that this book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. I also found it very interesting how Inspector Mantis solved his mysteries so accurately and he didn't stop trying to solve them until he found a solution to them. I recommend "Trouble In Bugland" to readers who like to solve mysteries and like to pick up a book and not putr it down until the end, because you won't want to!

My baby girl got this for her birthday, but my oldest daughter she is 4 loves it, she actually likes all of the hermie movies she has, but she has been requesting to watch this one a lot since we got it at around Christmas time. The message of the movie is really good, it teaches children how to pray to God, and that God will hear their prayers, and that they don't have to pray in any special way, but be themselves. It has some really good songs. The only draw back for us is that this movie was not available in Spanish, since both my daughters are bilingual, I would have liked to get it in Spanish, but besides that this movie is a really great movie.

The form demonstrated in this book is G-R-E-A-T!!! After you learn the form, try doing it back-to-back a couple of times for a great full-body workout. It'll strengthen your arms, legs, waist, back, chest, and lungs.

Paul Eng introduces the art of Praying Mantis Kung Fu in this, the first of a four volume series on Mantis forms. Introductions are provided by Chan, Pui (Wah Lum), Wai Hong (Fu Jow Pai), and Kam Yuen among others. A section on Mantis Kung Fu history, and then Eng demonstrates the Spear Hand form in 48 sections, including separate photos which show the correct application of the techniques. An excellent introduction to the art of praying mantis. Text is in Chinese and English, instructions are precise.

This book is adapted from a screenplay by Martin Berkeley. Many of the pictures are stills from the movie. However, as with the rest of the books in the "Monster Series" several drawings do not match. In the case of this book, the bug attacks the wrong building.

This is fun reading for your jungen and a good addition to the bug picture collection. Being 47 pages, he did a good job of condensing the story and still capturing the feel.

The story is that there used to be extremely huge mantis that used to eat stuff that was about people size. One that was frozen for millions of years is finally released.

the classic novel about AIDS

Review Date: 2004-03-14
Liston Pope's Floriane is an epic treatment of what the AIDS epidemic has meant for many families. It is filled with life and interest, as the eminent 19th century critic David Daiches has said of it. Thad Floriani is an artist of genius, but he must fight against the homophobia of his flamboyant Italian-American mother, and his New England mafia stepfather, in order to realize himself as an artist and live life his own way. There is so much emotion, passion, humor, wordplay, classical allusion and general literary merit to this novel, that I don't know why the Publisher's Weekly reviewer would want to say such negative things about it. I guess whenever something new, vital, serious, literary in the best sense, comes along, there will always be those who feel threatened by it and wish to discredit it. Bravo, Floriane! Everybody should read this book, so we could have a more tolerant and caring world.

inspiring love of poetry and of nature

I purchased this book because the Journal of Canadian Children's Literature said that every library and school in the country "should have it". I would enlarge that recommendation to the US and Canada, e.g. garter snakes are almost everywhere.

Gasparini is a masterful poet better known for his adult volumes and plays. He presents "nature lessons in verse" that I still find echoing in my mind. My nephew found it hilarious, a neighbour's child memorized several poems to recite to her class. The poems do not demean the reader with anthrocentricism. Instead, they ignite your curiosity with sophisticated prosity and a masterful command of poetry as an art form.
