A brilliant new vision for education.
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1998-01-23
This title is nothing short of visionary!! - The model of teaching that is presented is one of absolute respect for teacher and student.

The approach is experiential and collaborative - teacher is not superior and student is not subordinate. The model assumes that the best learning happens when it is determined by the learner.

There is nothing in the model that suggests that "good" teaching be forsaken - quite the contrary, the emphasis is on excellence, innovation and personal responsibility. The model is flexible and accommodating of all learners - it is not however a "recipe" book - it requires the users to be pro-active.

The book discusses the theory and principles in depth, and provides a range of reflections on real classroom experiences.

The book offers a range of activities and exercises to be used in real classrooms by real teachers and real students.

Any teacher who is looking to affirm that learning can be a wonderful experience might find some benefit in reading this one.

Any parent looking to assist their children achieve their potential should also read this book and then take it to the school.

An absolute necessity for anyone involved in education who is thinking "there must be a better way."

Guide to Teaching Strings, Sixth Edition
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.

This is a very informative book on everything one needs to know about teaching the string instruments, i.e., in this case, violin, viola, cello, and bass. Susan has added extra information to the older edition by her father, Norman Lamb, especially on the current technological development. The explanation of the technical terms is in just right amount that it doen't get too dry and detailed. I especially find that the chapter of "Selecting Instruments, Bows, and Cases" be most useful for inexperienced string teachers. The book is not designed to really teach one to play an instrument, but rather one to provide information on teaching the string instruments. One word of caution to buyers: the printing of pictures in some recent books has bad quality as if they were photo copied directed from a machine. I hope the pulisher would correct that.

Great how-to book for all ages!
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-28
I bought this book for my 5-year old son who loves trains, planes and boats. He was always asking me to draw these things for him, and I did the best I could. I figured this was a small amount to pay to see if this could help me draw better. Well, HE can draw better than I can! His confidence has also grown as he sees his drawings praised by others. This book has step-by-step instructions showing how to start out with basic shapes and to add details to complete the drawing. I, too, can draw these items better and with more detail than before. I will be purchasing the other books in this series. Money well spent.

My Critique on the Human Figure.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-11
I believe this book is both interesting and very good. Since it helps teach the individual the various aspects and techniques used to draw the human figure. Such as the different points-of-view an artist needs to consider when drawing the human figure and "short-cuts" used by other artists. It also describes the origin of figure drawing and a brief background to its development. In short, I feel that this book helps both the beginner and the intermediate artist develop his/her techniques and styles of drawing.
