Universally Applicable - Not Just For Sales Teams

As a Human Resource Consultant, I am always looking for new ways to help organizations design and manage teams most effectively. In Selling Is a Team Sport, Eric Baron provides practical, applicable information that transcends the "sales team" and can easily be applied to all teams. In a very readable and humorous style, Mr. Baron offers his knowledge-based experience on how to obtain workable skill sets in such areas as: team building, problem-solving, needs assessment, facilitation, listening, questioning, action planning and closing. Each of these areas readily translates to all of our everyday interactions- whether it be in a team setting or on an individual basis. The applicability of this book is readily apparent, for example, the reported facts from focus groups about what "buyers" want. "Buyers" wants can easily be translated to facts about what people want in their interactions. The acronym CREST and its translation presented in Mr. Baron's book is a wonderful mnemonic to strengthen quick acquisition of these sensible approaches to dealing with people. Charts, diagrams, anectodal experiences and text make the lessons being taught by Mr. Baron easily acquired and remembered. I thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience I had when reading Selling Is A Team Sport.

As a professional that has been part of the sales process from a direct sales, sales management, and marketing role I found this book to be very impactful. It offers insightful and pragmatic processes and skills that can be applied by anyone associated with the sales process. Whether you are a sales manager, a technical support professional, a product manager, or the line salesperson I think that you will find some valuable information.

I thought the processes regarding the successful facilitation of a "team" sales call to be especially interesting.

Reaching six sigma quality levels is not a simple tasks. Sure the results of improved quality levels are well known both in terms of increased customer satisfaction and overall lower costs. But six sigma ....

Both of these authors have a long history of working at the six sigma level. They've written this book not as a how-to, but as a report on their experiences in achieving six sigma.

First, it contains several reports of the "this is what we did and it worked," type along with some "this is what we did and it crashed."

Second this is a an alert to management to let them know what their committment has to be to enable a top-down alignment flow of understanding.

Because of their wide experience with six sigma, the authors know not only their own company (Raytheon) but have worked with other market leaders at companies such as GE, Delphy Automotive, Pratt and Whitney, Allied Signal and with consulting groups working in the quality area. They have talked with these other companies and report on some of the activities that have led them along the six sigma path.

This book can save a lot of heartaches in the implementation of working systems.

Knowledgeably and deftly written by David H. Treichler (Master Expert at Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems) with the assistance of Ronald D. Carmichael (Senior Manager for the Raytheon Company electronic Systems Group), The Six Sigma Path To Leadership: Observations From The Trenches is recommended as an informed and informative support guide for corporate managers seeking to improve company efficiencies, reduce errors, and increase bottom-line profits. Enhanced with a wealth of illustrative examples of what works and what doesn't, and showcasing lessons learned from hundreds of non-traditional applications and specific Six Sigma projects, The Six Sigma Path To Leadership is strongly recommended reading regardless of whether the reader is a novice to management or has worked their way up to senior level management positions of global responsibility.

I don't even know if this book is in prin anymore but, if it is, any sports fan should read it. It is similar to Friday Night Lights, The Last Shot, The Right Kind of Heroes and several books that have been written following one high school team through one year of their season. This chronicles one inner city high school team from Oakalnd and their quest to win the city championship. It follows everything surrounding the players-the one being recruited by every major college football program in the country, the lone whote player in the entire league, the up and coming superstar, the thug hoping to get his life straightened out...this book has it all. It is amazing that the author was given the access to these obviously skeptical players lives that he was and the way he details it is captivating beyond words.

Must read for parents of future high school kids.

This book is a must read for any youth coach of any sport and for any parent thinking of sending a kid to a inner city public high school. Filled with facts and statistics of graduation rates, medium grade point averages and anecdotal stories of tough young lives. If you're at all interested in why the Afican American young male has so many chips stacked against him from day one then read this book.

Mike Sroka's photographs of the Canadian Forces 'Snowbirds' fighter planes would have been treat enough, but when paired with behind-the-scenes access into Snowbird team aviation history and daily details, it becomes an outstanding pick any military or aviation collection must have. Gorgeous color photos accompany insider's details that could only have been gained from a photographer who had access to the team as one of their official photographers. The history, aviation insights and eye-catching photos make for an extraordinary package.

This book is full of Canadian Pride. I have seen the the Snowbirds perform in the US a few years ago. As an avid airshow fan I was impressed. Their red uniforms stand out. The book gave a great account in the the life of a Snowbird. The pictures were first class. A great addition to my aviation collection of books. Larry S

If the 1968 Detroit Tigers were "your team" growing up, as they were for me in the fourth grade, then you absolutely have to have this book. If you think you know everything there is to know about the 68 Tigers, then you must get this book because you don't know everything there is to know about this team, the last true regular season American League champion (in 1969 they went to divisional play). The book looks (in incredible detail) at every player, coach, manager, and broadcaster who was part of this World Series championship team. When I say EVERY player, I mean every player. If they had just one at-bat, they're in the book. If they pitched just one-third of an inning, they're in the book. Between the biographies of each person, there are summaries of every game the Tigers played in the 1968 season. One criticism: along with the game summaries, I would have liked the box scores of each game and a weekly summary of the standings. Remember, the Detroit newspapers were on strike for much of the 1968 season and this type of detail does not exist in one volume. The book also has a feature on Tiger Stadium (R.I.P. old friend) and some nice photos in the middle. Each player profile has a photo, the 1968 Topps baseball card for that player or coach. This book is far superior to Jerry Green's "Year of the Tiger," and much less expensive than that rare book (if you can even find one). No question, your Detroit Tiger library is not complete until you read this fine book. Now, if it only came with one final hot dog, mustard only applied with a wooden stick, from a vendor in Tiger Stadium. Alas...

Until I read this book, I'd only recognized the problems of sloppy source code control, but couldn't describe them, couldn't solve them, couldn't prevent them. Can you explain the symptoms of the double maintenance, shared data, or simultaneous update problems? Do you know the difference between configurations, revisions, and variations?

I've seen 300 page tomes on the subject that can't match even Chapter One in this book. The the examples using Ada, FORTRAN, and SCCS are dated, but tor basic principles, the book is unsurpassed.

Save 10% of your next project's budget. Buy the book.

This is a small, easy to read book that covers the basics of SCM better than most of the books on the market. Even though it's currently out of print, this is probably one of my all time-favorites books on SCM, especially when I'm trying to introduce the concepts to first-time readers. Many of the books seem to talk around the subject and never actually get down to what the fundamental aspects of SCM actually do.

Spike Dykes is a West Texas legend. While attending Texas Tech from 1988-1990, one of life's simpler pleasures was watching Spike coach his group of less than famous football fanatics. The book presents few surprises but does offer telling insights into coaching strategy and human relations. West Texas is a very unique place and Spike had to use every ounce of guile, energy, wit, and wisdom, in dealing with the principles. I'm not speaking of the team, but the fans. Any coach who can survive 13 years as a head coach in football crazy West Texas ("Friday Night Lights" takes place only 90 miles south of there in Midland, TX), deserves praise immeasurable and this book is his monument.

This book is WONDERFUL!!! I come from a family of history buff who are also Cardinal fanatics. Put the two together and you have got a family of true Cardinal fans!!! I bought this book as a gift for my 88-year old grandmother - the smartest Cardinal fan I have ever met!! She is a walking Cardinals Encyclopeadia. But this book even had her saying "I didn't know that!". Now I have to get one for myself to keep up with her and my father in our endless trivia session that seem to drown out every ballgame.

Great Book, But Needs an Update

What a fun book for the true Redbird fan. A 142-page history of the club, followed by a section with photos of every single player, coach, and manager to ever wear the Birds-on-the-Bat, profiles of every Redbird Hall of Famer, pages of statistics, and color reproductions of antique scorecards and memorabilia. It's a great book to leaf through while listening to KMOX or to end arguments over trivia. A Cardinals fan's delight. The only downside is that it's getting dated. It came out in 1998, so it doesn't include McGwire's 70, or Edmonds and Pujols. It needs another edition, and it's good enough and comprehensive enough that the publishers should seriously think about coming out with a fresher edition.
