I got this book at age 9 when it was published in 1972 and it still sits on my countertop today. This book is great because it helps kids to make simple single dishes or an entire meal with a meat, veggie, and drink. I learned measurement conversions, and gained a love of cooking from this book. Not to mention it has the absolute best deviled egg receipe I've ever eaten! There are pictures for each ingredient in addition to the written words. And many ingredients are pre-made that can be bought at the store such as Pigs in a Blanket with hotdogs and canned biscuits. Most of the recipes are designed for adult supervision vs. intervention so it's a great way to supervise the making of something vs. having to do it for them. The whole "retro" factor is very cool as well. I hope to use it to help my grandchildren learn how to cook.

One of the most teachable moments we often miss takes place in the kitchen, yet this cookbook has helped me recognize even if a toddle can't read he or she can still be part of the cooking experience. The fact this cookbook uses pictures, alongside of the words, has made it simple to pull out a recipe and work with my little guy! Maybe he will be a chef one day or make his partner a home cooked meal! Better Homes and Gardens Junior Cook Book

This is a wonderful cookbook -- the preparation methods are well described, the ingredients are find-able, the directions straightforward...and the results are good! An extra bonus is that with some recipes, there are multiple cooking methods you might use, and you can choose whether you want to tie up your oven, your microwave, your stovetop, etc. That flexibility really helps when planning menus with multiple items.

This is a great book telling how many home runs great ball players had throughout baseball history. I liked this book because it taught me new sports facts. I learned new facts when the book compared Mark Mc Gwire to Roger Maris. You need to read this book to find out who had more homeruns! Reviewed by Jack in St. Louis

The best story in Decker's Blue Sox series

My first academic job was at the same institution where I received my baccalaureate degree only a few years earlier. Nearly all of the teachers that I had had were still there, so now I was a colleague rather than a student. While it was not difficult, there were times when they treated me as a former student rather than as a fellow instructor. In this book, the former Blue Sox batboy, Buster Stookey, returns as the starting first baseman. Now going by the name Stretch, he is a quality player, both in the field and at the plate. Unfortunately, he is replacing longtime star Marty Blake, who is a power hitter whose fielding skills have severely deteriorated. However, only Stretch can see that and even though he plays very well and the Blue Sox win, he is booed by the fans and shunned by his teammates, especially Blake. In many ways, they still treat him as if he is the batboy. With my academic experience, I could relate to what was happening to Stookey.
After being injured, he is replaced by Blake and is about to be sent back to the minors. In the last game before he is due to depart, the main challenger of the Blue Sox exploits Blake's fielding weaknesses and Stretch is grabbed before he leaves. He is then installed at first and the entire Blue Sox team welcomes him with open arms.
Unlike some of the other main characters in the Decker series about the mythical Blue Sox, Stretch Stookey has no major character flaw to overcome. He is a team player all the way and should have been accepted right away. The only challenge he has is to be accepted as a ballplayer rather than as a former batboy. After persevering and never quitting, he is accepted for what he is. This, along with my personal experience, is what makes this my favorite story in the Decker series about the Blue Sox.

Co-written by pediatrician Michael Levin, M.D., Big Words for Little Kids is a vocabulary-building guide ideal for parents or educators to draw upon while instructing elementary school children. Instead of focusing on entire complicated words, Big Words for Little Kids teaches word roots and phonemes, such as "port" meaning "to carry" and found in words such as "porter", "export", "deport", "reporter", and "transport". Each mini-section about a new word root is enhanced with simple fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, trivia tidbits, and make-a-sentence activities. An excellent, easy-to-use resource for parents and summer school teachers as well as public school educators.

This is a nice reference guide for all ages. I have a 4 year old who is VERY interested in nature and I bought this book to aid myself and her in identifying various birds that we run across. It is perfect for an adult as well as children. There are plenty of pictures that even a child who cannot read, can still understand.

I recieved this cookbook from my mother. As a new bride and new cook the recipes were nearly all fail safe and husband pleasing.
Many of the ladies that contributed to this book were close personal friends of my mother and they were all with out a doubt experienced cooks and hostesses. Hence the timelessness and practicality of the recipes.
Some of the recipes I have memorized because they have become an intregral part of how I cook.
