I use this book for speech-language therapy. The drawings, maps, and graphs are suitable for the DBQ ("document-based questions") section of the NYS 8th grade Social Studies test, and the activities address a variety of language skills, such as critical thinking and inference, comparing and contrasting, vocabulary in context, etc. My 8th graders loved it - they said it helped them be more critical when they considered the documents on the test, and that they wished we had started doing the exercises earlier in the year. We actually did do similar items all year long, but because these activities are specifically geared to geography, they truly believed that I was helping them to learn social studies, and never even realized that their language goals were being addressed. My mother taught for 35 years and passed this book to me when she retired. My advice? Get this book - it'll seem like you never run out of activities.

I LOVE this book!! It has reduced the amount of time I need to spend looking for or creating worksheets to reinforce ideas.
Though the publishing date is 1988, and the statistical data is outdated, with these wonderful worksheets, your child receives an abundance of opportunities to learn how to read and decipher the information. With the practical skills learned from doing these activities, the student will be able to go to an updated map or statistical chart and have a complete understanding of how to draw upon the information displayed.
The book is spiral-bound for ease of making copies. The teacher's answers are on opposing pages. Another plus is that it covers multiple grade levels. 4th thru 8th.
I HIGHLY recommend this as an integral resource for any homeschool geography curriculum!

I used this book with a 7th grade class of "reluctant learners" and was completely delighted by their enthusiasm. All of the projects we tried (about 3/4 of those offered) were successful. As I was operating on a low budget, I appreciated being able to use the easily found materials and ingredients listed in the procedures. The Faux Marble project results were especially astounding. Get this book and enjoy!

"Georgia on my Menu: A Medley of Southern Hits truly can be said to represent two areas of life with which Georgians are intimately acquainted - the appreciation of fine Southern cooking and the desire to have music in one's life." ~Beverly Webb
Georgia on my menu is an authentic cookbook filled with delicious recipes celebrating fine Southern cooking and a rich cultural heritage. Cooks can begin with Overtures and Preludes, serve an Accompaniment along with a recipe from the Encore section and then complete the meal with a Finale. A Traditional Georgian Dinner may include a Baked Ham, Spoon Bread, Southern Style Green Beans, Baked Squash, Deep Dish Peach Cobbler and Southern Mint Tea.
Special Occasion Menus include a Fireside Dinner for Six, Birthday Dinners, Barbecues and even a New Year's Eve Buffet. Unique Recipes include Mock Champagne (made with pineapple juice and soda), Apricot Wine Soup, Fresh Curried Peaches, Pork Loin Roast with Cherry Sauce, Chicken Breasts Oscar, Cumin Rice, Crème De Menthe Brownies and Kahlua Fondue.
Traditional Favorites also include: Baklava, Mexican Casserole, Yorkshire Pudding, Chocolate Cakes, Strawberry Pie and Cheesecake.
I've rarely seen a cookbook filled with such a wide variety of cultural and regional favorites. The selections are tempting, imaginative and adventurous. I feel very fortunate to have found a cookbook that is not only highly collectible, but has recipes I remember from when I lived in the South. If you enjoy Southern cooking, this will be a very exciting find!
Purchasing this cookbook helps to support childcare centers, art museums, teachers, emergency shelters and other projects and activities by the Junior League of Cobb-Marietta, Inc.

I checked this book out of the library last month and could not believe all of the various recipes it had for so many different art activities. Page upon page of dough recipes, salt mapping, food recipes, and all the goos that a child would love. I am a preschool teacher for 4 and 5 year olds and I found this book a wonderful way to add to my daily curriculum. Child-care providers should really check this book out.

The best thing is that there are some many versions of each recipes. If you don't have ingredients for one, there several versions. Don't stay home without it!

We started off getting one of this series for a vacation car trip. Now we have collected eight more for any and all trips in the car, and for our enjoyment at home. I put this in when asking the kids to help with chores and clean their room. We also love listening to this instead of watching tv. We love the Explorers cd. The stories are very exciting and the narration is clear and very interpretive. I think my kids are learning and enjoying learning. I have to admit I have learned a few things I didn't know about early explorers too.

The author writes with enthusiam and knowledge. The depth of coverage is excellent. There are many wonderful features: art terms, teacher tips, addressing special needs, presenting artworks and dealing with safety issues. It clearly explains what to do and say when teaching art to toddlers through 8 year olds. It covers all art media in depth. Special attention is paid to integrating art using thematic teaching and the project approach. It is rich in appropriate theory and curriculum. This is a book for teachers just starting out and for those who want to up-date their teaching of art.

This art education book is wonderfully presented! After renewing it from the library for over a month, I knew that I needed to own a copy of this book. As an art teacher in a very new and growing facility, I found this book to be a wonderful form of continued education. It is helping me stay up-to-date on theories and practices in the early childhood art field and is helping me grow as an educator. The author offers practical advice as well as situational anecdotes in all categories of art education.
I highly recommend this book! I wish my professor had used it in college, I would have learned a lot more and been better prepared for what I am dealing with now!

While Rebeccasreads screamingly recommends HALLOWEEN NIGHT ON SHIVERMORE STREET for children ages 4 to 8, it can easily enchant any reader with a love for creatively creepy fun. This is one party kids & adults will want to read about over & over again, especially on those moonlit nights leading up to Halloween itself. Do try the whipped-cream-covered ants -- they were simply TO DIE FOR!
A fun, bouncy, hair-raising, rhyming tale, illuminated by Randy DuBurke's wild illustrations of all the usual suspects you'd ever hope to encounter at this time of year!

The neighborhood children are excited. There's a Halloween party tonight on Shivermore Street, a haunted-looking house decorated with spider webs, candles and jack-o-lanterns. At six o'clock as directed, the children approach, ready for the party to begin. Every hour, before the clock strikes, there's something new to do: just before seven it's snack time, "sizzling spiders hot out of the pan... whipped cream-colored ants"; before eight it's musical chairs, six frantic witches scrambling for five seats when the music ends. And so it goes, hour after hour, each bringing a scarier game, werewolves bobbing for apples, vampires cutting out pumpkin faces, hide-and-seek in the dark of night.
Beware! When the clock strikes twelve, it's time to take off the masks, everyone exposed. As the final chimes begin, all the partygoers gather for the unveiling. The children look around them, their eyes suddenly as big as saucers; it seems these party people are really scary monsters! With a shriek, the neighborhood kids run from the house on Shivermore Street and a Halloween party they'll never forget. In vivid Halloween colors, a pea green moon, a navy blue sky, goblins and ghouls eerie faces lit my orange candlelight, the fanciful illustrations are scary without being frightening, creepy and strange, spine-tingling. Page by page, the party accelerates, until the final countdown. Part of the revelry, the children have no idea what is happening until everyone is unmasked. This entertaining tale delighted my granddaughter as we read, hour by hour, deliciously building up to the midnight surprise. Luan Gaines/ 2005.
