Good for college students too

I bought this book out of college because I couldn't cook worth a flip. It's a great beginner's book - it takes nothing for granted! Later, when I married, I showed it to my husband and he began to take an interest in cooking because the book made it so easy. This is a very helpful beginner's cookbook, for any age.

I purchased this book for my 8.5 year old daughter who has enjoyed cooking at my side and has an interest in learning to cook. This cookbook provides a wonderful introduction to the world of culinary arts, beginning with an understanding of basic food ingredients, cooking and baking tools and terms and continues with advise on safety and menu planning.

The level is probably best suited to children from 10 - 14, however, with some guidance and supervision my 8 year old can prepare most of the recipes.

Recipes include all the basics from Vegetable soup to Chili to Banana Nut Bread, Brownies, Pies and Punch. All recipes inlcude an equipment list along with the ingredient list and clear, easy to follow step-by-step instructions with important safety tips like "wearing oven mits, remove the cookie sheet from the oven."

We've tried several of the recipes and have not been disappointed. This junior version of the classic compares well. I expect that my daughter will one day take this cookbook off to college.

This is a very important book for teachers and parents. I was so happy to see the real learning needs of children so eloquently articulated. Rogers lucidly shows us how children learn through meaningful experience at both the unconscious and conscious levels. His perspective on the education of children is vital to our world now. I look forward to giving this book to my son's school.

This book is a breath of fresh air. At last here is an author that is talking about education in terms of the fullness of being human beings. Had we been educated with this sensibility, we would have a different world. It's never too late. I encourage educators, parents and anyone to read this!

The seasons from a child's perspective
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-01
This is a wonderful look at the four seasons, in a sweet Richard Scarry-esque format. Bear Child heads out to see what changes are occuring in his neighborhood, discovering that people are "working and playing" at seasonal activities. Each season has a full two-page spread of the village, and all of the bear-people are busy on the farm, in their yards and on the hillside. This is followed by two pages of the individual activities isolated and labeled. A wide range of activities are covered in the appropriate season: taking the snow tires off the car, camping out, watching the birds fly south, making snow angels.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves this book. After checking it out of the library too many times to count, I am searching for the out-of-print book for our own collection. If your child loves to pour over the detailed books of Richard Scarry, she will probably enjoy this book as well.

Seasonal Flavors

This is a delightful picture book that describes each of the four seasons as follows: First, we see a page showing Bear Child's house and landscape, then Bear Child is pictured and his clothes named ("This is what Bear Child wears today-rubber boots, overalls, a flannel shirt, and a Windbreaker jacket."), then a two-page spread showing an overview of what town bears do during that season (e.g., planting seeds, flying a kite), and finally, two pages of close-ups of the bears doing the activities pictured on the previous page. This systematic approach is a great way to compare and contrast the clothes, climate, flora, and activities of the seasons, yet it is never boring or repetitive: Anne Rockwell's pictures switch from wide angle to close up perspectives and this adds an unexpected twist. A very satisfying book with warm, bright, colorful, illustrations, and lots of details to explore.

This is an excellent cookbook. I own hundreds of cookbooks--it's my hobby--and I entertain a lot.I have yet to try a recipe from here that doesn't get rave reviews. (Try the BBQ leg of lamb; my guests actually REQUEST it repeatedly!--And then serve it with "Toad Hill Mint Sauce" from the Rochester Junior League's other book, Applehood and Motherpie.)

Easy-to-use and FULL of simple but elegant recipes!

Second Best Intro Early Childhood Text For Teachers
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-05
After Jo Ann Brewer's superb INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION textbook, I would get this resource to keep me up-to-date on the foundational knowledge that stands as essential for early childhood professionals. Even though it lacks a chapter exclusively devoted to the all-important role of play in early childhood education, the absence of such a discussion leaves the learner with a more neutral reference point from which to decide his position on whether or not to align with a play-based curricular philosophy

Morrison presents a starkly realistic and contemporary overview of the field with an outstandingly streamlined overview of Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development (where he keeps a keen and faithful eye on expressing the ideas from Piaget/Inhelder's THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE CHILD).

After getting the Brewer text and Morrison, you should need no other book of this type. Please try Feeney, Christensen, & Moravcik's WHO AM I IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN if you need one more excellent text.

I use this book for speech-language therapy. The drawings, maps, and graphs are suitable for the DBQ ("document-based questions") section of the NYS 8th grade Social Studies test, and the activities address a variety of language skills, such as critical thinking and inference, comparing and contrasting, vocabulary in context, etc. My 8th graders loved it - they said it helped them be more critical when they considered the documents on the test, and that they wished we had started doing the exercises earlier in the year. We actually did do similar items all year long, but because these activities are specifically geared to geography, they truly believed that I was helping them to learn social studies, and never even realized that their language goals were being addressed. My mother taught for 35 years and passed this book to me when she retired. My advice? Get this book - it'll seem like you never run out of activities.

I LOVE this book!! It has reduced the amount of time I need to spend looking for or creating worksheets to reinforce ideas.

Though the publishing date is 1988, and the statistical data is outdated, with these wonderful worksheets, your child receives an abundance of opportunities to learn how to read and decipher the information. With the practical skills learned from doing these activities, the student will be able to go to an updated map or statistical chart and have a complete understanding of how to draw upon the information displayed.

The book is spiral-bound for ease of making copies. The teacher's answers are on opposing pages. Another plus is that it covers multiple grade levels. 4th thru 8th.

I HIGHLY recommend this as an integral resource for any homeschool geography curriculum!
