Cathy Duffy is honest, dependable and reliable. I bought her first book years ago and several updates inbetween. I have always found that I could count on her to tell me the truth about homeschooling products--which made homeschooling much easier. I've been homeschooling for 12 years now and I couldn't have done it without Cathy Duffy. Way to go, girl!!

This book is a must have for any parent or coach teaching youth tennis. Outside of the basic drills taught in schools and camps around the country, this book uses imaginative and extremely effective techniques for ensuring your youth are not only physically ready for competitive (and leisure) tennis, but also develop the knowledge to be "smart" players on the court. A truly phenomenal product and hats off to Mr Minihan for his efforts!

Fast-Paced Plot, Well-drawn Characters & Coastal Setting
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-18
Augusta, Georgia author Elise Weston offers readers an intriguing mystery set during the time period of World War II -- August 1943 to be specific -- on the coast of South Carolina. The story begins when eleven-year-old Hugh, who is coastwatching with binoculars, spots a periscope that he believes belongs to a German submarine close to the beach.

Hugh continues to monitor the area where he's staying with his family in a beach house. A flashing light in an abandoned beach house dubbed "the spook house" by Hugh and his siblings catches his eye. As the plot unfolds, Hugh keeps a scrap book of the war, adding details and evidence that result from his coastwatching adventures.

Though this book is a perfect companion for a lazy afternoon at the beach, it is also a good reading choice for any time of the year. The plot moves fast, the setting will make the reader wish for the beach, and the historical accuracy and details bring this period to life for readers young and old. Well-drawn characters that literally step off the pages, sand, salt air, and a satisfying ending all combine to make this an outstanding read.

A Great Read with suspense

While scouting for books for my grandson I found Coastwatcher and read it less than 24 hours because I couldn't put it down. There is a fast paced plot which begins with a periscope sighting off the South Carolina coast by an 11 year old boy. He pursues his clues and there is an exciting conclusion. Of interest to me were descriptions of 1943 wartime America which I lived through - including rationing, radio news, blackouts, and the great volunteer war effort. It has historical interest for children and the book has useful information at the back for teachers. The descriptions of life in a south Atlantic coastal setting are beautifull and evocative of the place and time. It is wonderful to read about children playing together without so much adult supervision and the sedentary influences of TV, computers, and Ipods. All the characters, including the dog, are well drawn and charming.

This is a great cookbook - many of the recipes I've used have become family traditions that we can not do without! The Banana Birthday cake and coconut cake are fabulous. There is a great variety of recipes esp. with a taste of Texas. A must have!

Thoughtful, research-based design for inquiry science

Every science teacher should read this book! The thought, research, and insight the developers put into the new designs for learning science are wonderful. They listened to students, observed how students made sense of the world around them, and adjusted the technology and learning strategies to connect science to everyday happenings in the lives of students. This book also tells the story of how partnerships between higher education, K-12, and field science organizations can bring relevance and meaning to the teaching and learning of science in our schools. Terrific Book!

From my role as a science teacher, it is encouraging to have a book which is informed by years of classroom research. My experience with the Computer as Learning Partnership project has greatly changed my understanding of how kids learn and what it takes to change the way they perceive the world around them. This book provides a pedagogical framework that has worked very successfully over several years and narrows the gap between academic research and classroom practice. I hope that my responses to the "Ask Mr. K." questions will be useful to teachers in reflecting on their own practices.

I checked this book out of our library so much when I was a little girl. When my son was about 9, I read it to him during our nightly reading sessions. He loved it, too. Inspires imagination.

I grew up in Lapeer county where this story takes place. So as a child I read and loved this book. Now, as an adult I live in teh very house the story takes place in and once again have discovered the magic of this story. There is a biography of the author which contains other short stories about her father which didn't make it into Copper Toed Boots, to anyone who enjoys this book I would also suggest the biography.

Note: These are true stories about the author's father. A great way to teach children about life in the late 19th century and get them started reading at an early age. Shad's adventures are fun and the writing is mature enough that adults won't feel talked down to. Enjoy!

Lots of fun for kids

We bought this for our niece and nephew (ages 7 and 5) for Christmas, and they really liked it. They had always wanted to play the adult version of Cranium at our house, but they needed lots of help (of course) and didn't understand 90% of the questions and activities. With this version, they could start playing right away. They needed a little help from mom and dad, but otherwise, it seemed like the activities and questions were age appropriate and fun.

Book of fun!

This book is all about having fun with your family and friends. It has games and activities. It includes all the things you need to play the games- a spinner, game cards, marker, two frogs, and a sand timer. The book has five sections. The five sections are Play the Game, Connect, Perform, Discover, and Create. Besides playing the board game, kids can do different activities from drawing to sculpting. This is a great game to play as a family. I recommend you buy one and start having fun with your family and friends.

My brothers and I loved this book because of its cool activities. My favorite game is wacky weather. After we started playing the games we didn't want to stop. I like beating my brothers. I also enjoyed performing and being creative. My brothers liked playing the games and drawing. They thought it was super cool.

Parent's Note: What a wonderful book! If you are trying to figure out how to get your kids away from the video games and television here is your answer. The kids enjoyed playing the games and doing the activities. I loved hearing them laugh, and watching them acting out the parts they were asked to perform. This book should be in every household with kids. "The Ultimate Book of Fantastic Fun & Games: Share the Fun with Family and Friends" also makes a great gift. It's fun, creative, and easy to carry around. Congratulations to the publisher for publishing a unique product.

From the Her Website
... an enthusiastic collection of songs and stretches, short rhymes, calls and response, and other program fillers that young listeners will soon be happily chanting along with. ...A boon for beginning storytellers or storytime givers...contains examples of successful material to use with youngsters in a programming setting, whether in the public library, media center, or park district. Baltuck does an expert job of communicating her enthusiasm for her work, and the kids who contribute as singers and participators are clearly having a great time. Even if you already have Baltuck's print version of Crazy Gibberish in your collection, this cassette is not superfluous. It will contribute a bunch of crowd-pleasing songs and stretches to your repertoire, and it is certain to become a favorite among young listeners. - Storytelling Review

This book and the cassette of the same title are wonderfully entertaining for children of all ages. The author combines music and stories to capture your attention. My kids request this over and over and can sing along and tell the stories as we hear them on the cassette. We found these available at our local library and it would be well worth having our own copy. Enjoy!!

Mayesky balances theory, standards, and practicality in her book by organizing it like a house. She builds up the discipline from the ground (what is creative arts in early childhood) to the unique, but unnecessary, touches (applying early childhood creative arts for holidays).

It's expensive, but worth the price. Vocational schools that offer early child development training use this text.

Congratulations to Marjorie for pulling together the information in this resource, and her supportive husband for living with her during those 3 years. As a consultant I am frequently asked about citations of instructional strategies....now I can cite one book. I was especially impressed by Marjorie's comments regarding the effectiveness of these strategies for all grades, not just K-8. Not only did she state that adaptation was possible, but she gave examples of methods for adapting strategies. A job well done. This book should be a resource in every school's professional library--and if you don't have one, start one!!
