This is so great! I was looking for info on a part of the curriculum that my daughter will be using for her 3rd grade course in the Calvert Home School. The ringing endorsement makes my decision to use this course and its offerings that much easier. Thanks everyone.

My third grade teacher read this book to us in class and I was completely enchanted with it. My bus passed Mason Lane where numerous Mason families lived and I was sure the farm house across the highway was THE Mason home. I think maybe I have confused the Mason name with the name of the family in the book. Forty years later I still think about the family.

I can only add to what others have written here! I read and re-read the book as a child from a British/Armenian background growing up in Iran in the mid-sixties. I loved the story of a family and a place, changing and growing across generations. I can still see the hardback blue cover of the book in my mind's eye and remember the feel of it in my hands! It made a huge impression.

I read this book many times as a child being raised abroad. Since I had no grandparents, uncles, cousins, or aunts in my life, this book built for me a sense of American family and Place. I also really appreciated the generational connections, with the charming illustrations aging the characters from children to elders. This book was so precious to me that when my home burned down in 1996, this book was one of maybe ten items I was able to rescue. I still have it; smoky, charred and brittle, but intact enough to be sharing with my third grade students studying western expansion. I hope to someday be able to afford a 'smoke-free' hardback copy.

I read this book in 3rd grade. In fact, I had the book out of our class library all year - I kept renewing it over and over. 45 years later I decided to look for it to read it again and am delighted to find used copies listed here. I've added it to my Wish List. It's nice to see how popular it was.

I read this book when I was about 10 years old, and I'm sure that I wore that copy out re-reading, and re-reading it! What a terrific, timeless, science fiction classic! If you can get your hands on this book and you love juvenile science fiction, I don't hesitate to recommend this one!

It's no secret that some of the best books are written for kids and teens. Baby Boomers will fondly remember Scholastic Book Services before they were a mainstream publisher, and little four page weekly reader newspapers that were passed out in class. Books cost about 50 cents and you'd order them together as a class. What a great stake in classroom reading, how fun to take home your books from class, and how different than a $30 Harry Potter hardback. And what great books they were: Encyclopedia Brown, The Amazing Adventures of Alvin Fernald (part of which showed up on TV), Danny Dunn and the Homework Machine (predating PCs) are a few that come to mind. The Runaway Robot was a classic among classics, penned by golden age sci-fi author Lester Del Rey, and now collectible for it's space-theme cover. These are only a few of the great books modern librarians cycled out of libraries in their continuing war on the imagination. But until someone reprints gems like these, my advice is order yours used, and discover this long- lost classic. You'll be glad you did.

I ordered the cookbook TALK ABOUT GOOD; as usual with Amazon, it arrived very quickly. The books were damaged in shipping, I read the instructions for returning damaged items, contacted Amazon with e-mail, printed a mailer and gave the package to my postman. A new book was mailed out as soon as Amazon found out about the problem, I had a couple of weeks to get the damaged book returned. I originally did not notice that both books were damaged on the corners so only one was replaced, I'm sure that if the other was reported damaged, I would have another new one. TALK ABOUT GOOD service!!
Oh, by the way, this is an excellent cookbook. I made a carrot cake for my boss, she tasted it and knew where the recipe was from! Amazing!! A friend had given her this cookbook in the mid 70's and my husband brought it back to me from Louisiana in the mid 70's. The recipes are favorites of the Lafayette Junior League. The book has not changed in 30 years except it now has a hard cover! The second book is a Christmas present for my boss - both of us have lost the paper covers from the original 30+ year old book!

This is most likely the BEST cookbook in existence, defiantly if you like Cajun food. The fact that it has a binding that allows pages to lay flat, remain open shows how the publisher intended this book to be used, in the kitchen.
Wife wore out the 1st copy I bought her, literally to torn shreds, this is a replacement, and we got it at a great price.

During my childhood, this was my mother's favorite cookbook - long before it was feasible to access such a wide range of recipes from the internet. She lost the cookbook (and everything else) in Hurricane Katrina, and it has been difficult to replace it. We were so happy to be able to find it on Amazon.com and give it to her for Christmas. Although she has relocated from New Orleans, the cookbook and the recipes that she used from it over the holidays, made us feel at home. The cookbook itself demonstrates authentic home cooking. Each recipe reflects the contributors' individual tastes and family traditions, and the types of cooking and ingredients provide a glimpse into a distinct culture. I find it as much fun to read the recipes and their variations as to cook them.

This is a great book to teach children that hands are not for hitting but rather helping. Another book that should be read by every parent and teacher of children 3-12 is Bully-Proofing Children: A Practical, Hands-On Guide to Stop Bullying.Parents and teachers can learn to create nurturing environments where children can get along;help children to express anger and use words to resolve conflict;teach social skills including friendship.... It should be on the shelf of every home and classroom.

It has all of the "Old South" recipes in it plus a treasure trove of new and fun recipes. Women in the south take great pride in their cooking and this is a perfect example of a fine cook!

This is a very pretty book. I especially like reading the sidebars that tell about local history and food history and the area, and League projects. Many of the recepies are easy to fix for someone that doesn't usually use fancy cookbooks. They seem to have put a lot of effort into making the book a really fun one to just look at and read. I enjoy that. You will enjoy having this book around the house.

And although you may not have every ingredient already in your cabinet, they can all be found at any good, well-stocked grocery store - no trips to "specialty" markets. I highly recommend this book.

I am very impressed with this cookbook. I've lived in Colorado for nearly a decade and had seen this cookbook in lots of homes and stores. It seemed like a 'tourist' attraction... boy, was I wrong. I love this cookbook for a number of reasons. One, my food is devoured by family and friends and they actually 'ask' for my recipes! (A secret dream of mine). Secondly, my kitchen seems to be readily stocked with the items these recipes require...how often does that happen? So, I love this cookbook. I've even sent my mother-in-law recipes.... another secret dream of mine. Enjoy.

This year I have bought if for 2 other friends who just married - and know that they will love it too! Just the Heavenly Potatoes are worth the price of the book. I also love the "pantry" section in the back of the book - comes in really handy for shopping lists - and always having the basic ingredients on hand. Highly recommend!!!

I received this book from my grandmother as a gift - never thought I would like it so much! It has become one of my staple cookbooks; the recipes are accurate, easy to follow (and modify, if necessary), and delicious. There are fun things to try (Brie crackers and Nebraska City Cake), good basics (a great chili recipe and REALLY easy pretzels), and lots of recipes in every possible category. I'm always finding more recipes to try and I've never been disappointed. If you're looking to go beyond Betty Crocker and BH&G, try this one.

Byron Barton's Trains has become an unlikely favorite for our 2-year old. I say unlikely because it's so different from what most of his favorites (which are heavy on Sandra Boynton, Jez Alborogh, and the Spot series) are like. The art is extremely simple, using lots of bold colors, and the story doesn't rhyme or feature any noticeable repetition. It's not really even a story at all, but rather a descriptive sentence on each page highlighting the kind of train or activity shown.
I don't know whether it's the bold colors or just the subject matter (my son is absolutely fascinated by all kinds of vehicles), but this little board book went straight into his bedtime "top 5" and shows no sign of leaving! I may not get it, but I'm confident enough after seeing my son's reaction to this book to recommend Trains to the parents of any toddler interested in trains.

My son loved this book from the time he was about 15 months old. The words and the illustrations are simple and catchy. I'm not sure if this one comes in paperback but I highly suggest getting all of the Barton books in the board book style. They are sure to be read over and over!!
Not as good as other Barton books

This story was kind of boring, not as melodic as some of the other books (Cars is our favorite) but kind of cute. Graphics are somewhat boring too (compared to the others)

I was a teacher in early childhood and I love to find new books for my grandson, who is almost 3. At the early level they need simple books both in text and pictures. The Barton books have a very simple text and great pictures and my grandson loves all of them. I always let him choose what books to read and Barton is his favorite since he was 1 1/2. I would recommend all of his books for young children ages 1 to 4. We have read Trucks, Trains, Men at Work, Planes, Airport & Dinosaurs.

No matter how many times I read this to my son, I never tire of it. He loves the beautiful pictures and I love those plus the clever, sweet, soothing bedtime story. This is now one of my very favorite children's books.
A must read!

I agree with the previous reviews that this is a great bed time story with stunning paintings.
But.....I personally preferred hard cover stories for kids especially when it will be read at bed time.

Good Night, Mr. Night is a book that was written as a night time aid to parents of small children. Some children are very reluctant to fall asleep and this book, with its somber mood and colorful yet peaceful drawings, is intended to be used as a means to get little children to stop resisting the inevitable, close their eyes, and get a good night's sleep.
What I like best about this book are the drawings. Each drawing is colorful, but yet the mood of the book remains somber. And the drawing of Mr. Night is very effective. Instead of drawing this figure as a cartoon- like person, the illustrator of the book wisely decided to add some creative flair by depicting Mr. Night as a person whose body is comprised of stars set against a black background- just like looking at the night time sky. Mr. Night even has crescent moons for his eyes. This creative angle on the drawing makes Good Night, Mr. Night, a better book than it otherwise might have been.
The message of falling asleep is pretty clear in this book and reading it to little children usually accomplishes the book's main goal. However, the writing of this book isn't really anything special. Not only are the words very bland and lacking creativity, but there is also no rhyming or rhythm. Kids generally enjoy rhymes, and it would have taken little effort to add rhyming patterns or something rhythmic to the book. This would have improved its effectiveness.
There are several good books to read to little children to get them to go to sleep. Good Night, Mr. Night is one book in a large market that continues to grow as more and more individuals come forward with books designed for children. This book isn't the greatest in its class, but that doesn't mean it has no useful value. It is still a good book for small children and it does accomplish its main task. It offers a good degree of success at getting youngsters to fall asleep and for that reason alone, it is worth buying.

I absolutely love "The James Bond Lifestyle Seminar," but this audiobook fell short. The plot was decent, but nothing better than you'd expect based on the synopsis. The main character is supposed to be 33 years old, yet his voice sounds like an old man. He sounds very unsure of himself. Also, a lot more could have been done with the sound effects. They did not immerse me in the scenes, as another reviewer claimed.
An all-star cast of my generation! I swooned over Rod Taylor and Robert Culp!

Wow! My sister pointed me to this audio book and I couldn't believe my ears. I just relaxed on my bed to listen and was absolutely delighted with the movie-quality of the sound effects. Not only is this a masterful, well-written plot, it's also a quality production. The best I've heard.
And those stars that the magnificent author/director Paul Kyriazi lined up for this special version of his book!!! Well, all I can say is that I remember swooning each time I saw any of them on the big screen. (I hope my hubby doesn't read this.) But when I saw Rod Taylor--who narrates this story, with such a come-hither voice--starring in The Birds with that gorgeous Tippi Hedren, I almost fainted. Yes, he was that much of a hunk ... and still is, according to my sister!
Incidentally, people used to say I looked like Tippi. Ah-hhh, memories ... But getting back to this audio book, I loved it to pieces.
Keep up the excellent work, Mr. K. You're terrific, and almost as handsome as the great Rod! Ciao, baby ...

Mr Kyriazi's production of Hard Rock Lovers was just fantastic! I was on the edge of my seat on a daily basis! I put the audio book on my iPod and listened while I jogged. I gotta say it motivated me to get out there and I am so sad it is over! I cannot wait for his next Audio production!

The "Hard Rock Lovers" audio book was not at all what I expected, but what a wonderful surprise! It's a twisted, tangled web of events played out by a handful of multi-leveled, intertwined characters. The story is well written, beautifully told and convincingly enacted centering on the heights of a successful rock star and the terrible costs that are paid when that success is abused. People and events are manipulated by all the characters to satisfy their own needs and agenda.
"Good" and "evil" are blurred. "Life" and "death" are blurred. Relationships are blurred, but the irony of fate is boldly presented and it's made abundantly clear that our "next" existence offers another chance to hopefully do better. The inevitability of change, the subtle and sometimes dramatic interrelationships between cause and effect as well as the ever-present, ever-looming scales of divine and poetic justice are persistent threads. A beautiful blending of drama and melodrama are used to develop both the story and the characters. The audio presentation is top-notch entertainment, particularly when you consider that all acting is accomplished solely through vocal artistry. The actors do a fantastic job of inviting the listener into their world and moving you effortlessly through the story.
I really enjoyed listening to this audio book. It is wonderful from start to finish and my congratulations go out to all involved. It's a winner on all levels.

From the moment Hard Rock Lovers comes on ... it takes you by the hand and mind, and immediately draws you into this intriquing story, narrated by the imcomparable Rod Taylor, of revenge, love, lust, cold reality and spiritual enlightenment.
Robert Culp kept me laughing with his perfect low-life agent performance, always the best! James Darren was the perfect rock star, mean, talented but sad, his performance was # 1. Ishtar Uhvana was great as Medusa, she added the sweetness to keep some reality in the rock world and her ending dialoque brought tears to my eyes. Loved Russ Tamblyn, George Chakiris was brilliant as the evil Reynaldo, and Nefta Perry as Connie played the perfect Rosie Perez.
The ending gives you hope and leaves you with happy feelings. You will want to play it again and again; it only gets better each time you listen.
Paul Kyriazi is my hero. I am his BIGGEST fan.
Thank you Paul for the fun and exciting adventure!
