This book offer alot of details on the anthro field and it was not just the techinical details but actually personal experiences
that added a life-view to the profession. Even though I may not be an anthro major I have a higher respect for it and its
accomplishments from this book and the class I had on anthro.

This book outlines the results of a series of micro-wear analysis of artefacts occurring in the late Mesolithic and Early
Neolithic of Denmark. Such a study is unprecedented and fills a long standing gap in our knowledge of the continuity-discontinuity
in artefact usage across the transition. This work becomes even more valuable now that the symbolic and contextual significance
of artefacts in the Neolithisation process has become such a matter of animated discussion. The analysis of the artefacts
is outstanding and the use of the denticulated blades in the late Ertebølle Culture and Early Neolithic to process vegetable
matter is demonstrated.

The title needs some explanation to an unwary reader. The South West refers to the south of Western Australia. Denmark is
not that European country, but a province of the South West. While Bunbury and Augusta are coastal towns in this region, Bunbury
being on the Indian Ocean, south of Perth, and Augusta all the way to the southernmost portion of the state.
Wheeler shows neat photos of the flora. The prettiest are those of the wildflowers common all over the region. When they are in bloom during the spring and summer, of course. The photos can also give you an appreciation of how underpopulated the region is. Relatively little development in the rural areas.
Bunbury and Augusta are included in the title and text because visitors to the region often stay there or pass through these towns. Especially Bunbury, since that is only 1 hour from Perth. So you can troll the book for sights around both Bunbury and August.

An impressive version of beloved fairy tales. Easy to comprehend for children, and beautifully illustrated.
The only regret is that some of the well known fairly tales are missing in this selection. Otherwise, I do recommend it.

The cruel logic of self destruction.

Review Date: 1997-06-03
Havoc offers an insight into the mind of a self destructive person. The book describes a self-sustaining set of thoughts in
the main character - thoughts, which bring about the cruel logic of self destruction as an inevitable consequence of life
itself.
The story takes place in pre-WW2 Copenhagen, where the main character, Ole Jastrau, becomes an alcoholic with the specific
purpose of deliberately destroying himself - physically as well as mentally.
Like most of Tom Kristensen's work, Havoc displays a pessimistic view of life. The reader should be in a healthy mental state
when reading the book. A warning on the cover of "The Dice Man" stated, that this book would change your life. "Havoc" might
END your life.

Broad & engaging overview of Danish history

On a trip to Copenhagen, I marveled over brick castles, baroque chapels, and ancient jewelry and runes on display in the National
Museum--but I lacked the historical background to put much of what I saw into its appropriate context. Palle Lauring's book
promised to offer a broad framework to help with this problem. I bought it during the trip and skipped around to read interesting
tidbits related to places we visited.
But it was long after we'd returned home that I pulled the book out again and started to read it properly, in chronological order, not sure if I'd find it interesting enough to read all the way through. Rather to my surprise, I found the text both informative and highly engaging.
It begins with the last Ice Age (30,000 years ago) and the impact of climate change on the environment and the type of people who lived in Denmark in prehistoric times. It grows particularly fascinating when Lauring moves to the Viking age. He draws on folklore, sagas, and archeological evidence to paint a rich picture. While I read his account of the (admittedly violent) Middle Ages and the reigns of the Valdimars, I must have told my husband a dozen times that aspiring screenwriters should take note: there is plenty of rich material for historical epics in this period of Danish history.
Lauring writes for a British, rather than an American audience, and to make it interesting and relevant for the Brits, he emphasizes the Viking influence in England while saying almost nothing about their expeditions elsewhere (the Faroe Islands are not even mentioned until two-thirds of the way through the book, in discussion of the early 19th century; Greenland gets only passing reference). But how much can I reasonably complain about incomplete coverage, given that the coverage begins in the Stone Age and runs through the 1970s? Obviously there will be a lot missing. But highlights and general trends are clearly laid out.
I don't have the depth of knowledge to comment on the accuracy of some of his interpretations. But now I do have what I set out to obtain, a broad understanding of Danish history. Now when I read other texts, or make my next visit to Denmark, I'll at least have some general historical "hooks" on which to hang new information.

This travel guide has nice pictures of Helsinki and nice color maps. The pull out map is especially useful and colorful. The
walking routes are nice and I also like the excursions section. After reading this book the full Finland Insight Guide is
probably not worth the price unless you really are spending a long time in Finland.
