The best choice for getting to know Tennessee

Cathy and I looked through many guide books before attempting to write Traveling Tennessee. We found none covered the state in our easy helpful style (see Traveling the Trace and Traveling the Southern Highlands).

We followed the pioneers through the state from east to west giving you a brief history of the people and the area, and what you would find there today. Tennessee offers many pleasant surprises along its highways from scenic sites to activies you may participate in. For instance, you know of the Great Smoky Mountains but do you know the quite side of the Smokies? where Tennessee's first gold rush was? about a failed Utopia brought back to life? the courthouse stolen in the middle of the night? or where you can swim at the end of a scale model of the Misssissippi River?

We strove to give you information and details about interesting attractions all across Tennessee as well as B&Bs, dining, shopping, special events, camping, and where to get more information. More than 200 photos help tell the stories in this 316-page guide.

Thorough, jam-packed with facts & complete info.

Bradbury himself appeals to me

I suppose anyone who would make that trip would have to be intrepid, but he seemed really to be.

The thing I like the most about him is that he was such a civilized person. A gentle, intelligent, well educated, modest, and very friendly person.

The other review about his insights into what he was describing is, in my mind, quite correct also.

I may be a bit prejudiced and certainly am more interested because my middle name is Bradbury as a result of being a descendent of his.

One of the earliest, and very well written, accounts of life on the upper Missouri River. This is a classic of the fur trade era. Bradbury, a botanist, went up the Missouri with the famous Astorian overland expedition of William Price Hunt, Ramsay Crooks, Donald McKenzie, naturalist Thomas Nuttall and others in 1811. His descriptions of Indian life, geology, botany, geography and overall life as it was in 1811 being so far removed from civiliztion is incredible. He was a very articulate and keen observer of the world around him. Bradbury gives further insight into Manuel Lisa, John Colter, Henry Brackenridge, trading with the Indians, etc. The last chapter he devotes to the soon to be mass immigration into the western parts of the United States. His thoughts on this are ahead of his time. There is simply too much good to say about this timeless masterpiece. The book itself may be somewhat difficult to find, but it is worth looking for. A+

a collection of interviews with one of our great talkers
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-24
Truman Capote once said that he loved talking more than anything else. Inge's book is a collection of interviews with the great talker himself, covering the period from 1948, when Capote burst on the literary scene with his first novel, "Other Voices, Other Rooms," to a 1980 self-interview from "Music for Chameleons." It includes the complete texts of George Plimpton's important "New York Times Book Review" interview upon the publication of Capote's masterpiece "In Cold Blood" and Eric Norden's lengthy 1968 "Playboy" interview, both involving Capote's claim to have invented a new literary form, the "nonfiction novel." These interviews make clear why we must sometimes take Capote with a grain of salt, and why we must take his work as seriously as he took it himself.

Jim and Ernie do an excellent job with this book about the driftless area's archaeology. This was a required text for Jim's midwest archaeology class. It is a very readable book compared to most archaeology publications. A great introduction to the Upper Mississippi Valley regions archaeology. Jim and Ernie have worked in the area for years and are very knowledgeable about what is going on. Ernie is in constant contact with collectors to gain more information about what is going on in the area. Their work at MVAC has made this book possible. Overall it is a very good book on the subject that is interesting and engaging to read.

James L. Theler (Professor of Archaeology, Department of Sociology and Archaeology, University of Wisconsin La Crosse) and Robert F. Boszhardt (Associate Director of the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center, Univ. of Wisconsin - La Crosse) are veteran archaeologists with more than twenty years experience in the field. Twelve Millennia: Archaeology Of The Upper Mississippi River Valley is a collaboratively written and thoroughly engaging overview of the Driftless region of the Upper Mississippi River Valley, featuring its ecological evolution throughout prehistory, as well as catalogs of animal remains and Native American rock art that can be found in the valley today. An excellent guide for vacationers and amateur archaeologists wanting background information for an area that roughly extends from Dubuque, Iowa to Red Wing, Minnesota, Twelve Millennia is a welcome and scholarly contribution to regional academic Archeology Studies reference collections and student reading lists.

Uncle Monday is a shape-shifter who for years has resided in a lake near Orlando. Uncle Monday is also a terrific compilation of folklore from Florida. There are myths, legends, tall tales, fairy tales, family stories, and a plethora of excellent oral narratives that have been and remain told in Florida. The introduction to the book is well-written, and each section provides good background information on various characters and tale types. The book also has wonderful illustrations that capture the feel of various stories, and the book includes excellent ideas for teachers to use when presenting the texts in class. It's a model study by a fine folklorist.

Great Stories and Fine Illustrations

This book is an important contribution to the study of Florida's history and cultural traditions. There is a wide range of interesting stories, and they cover various eras of Florida life. The stories are presented in an accessible style that is very close to the verbatim texts of actual storytellers who were recorded by fieldworkers in the state. The book is illustrated with fine drawings that have the whimsy of a cartoon but are not cutesy. The book contains creative ideas for teachers to use the stories in a range of classes, but the stories will also appeal to adult readers. This is a fine collection of actual stories told in Florida, and the book will be interesting to readers across the country.

I love the quotes selected from other literature that are found at the beginning of each chapter. They provide food for thought as well as a diversion from factual information.

Diagrams and charts are interspersed and clearly simplify the rhetoric.

The book as a whole is easily understood by someone with no medical training. Yet it appears to provide very logical and sensible points that should be beneficial to medical professionals. It contains a wealth of information from which all of us dealing with chronic pain can derive help.

Great review of headaches and migraine in particular

I am an otolaryngologist (aka ENT doctor) who sees a lot of patients with "sinus headache", most of whom have migraines. Although this book is presumably written for the lay person, and does a nice job for that audience, I have highly recommended this book to many doctors in training, and for physicians who see migraine patients, but may not have a lot of personal experience or professional experience with treating migraines. Its very readable, concise, and practical. I'm going to buy a couple of copies for my students to use while they are working with me!

One of the very best!

Anyone who experiences headaches and Migraines or knows someone who does needs some good books about headaches and Migraine in our libraries. This book is a quite worthy addition to anyone's library. Written "for general readers," the book is, "a comprehensive overview of causes, diagnoses, and treatments" written in a logical, easy flowing style. You'll find it complete, up-to-date, and easy to understand. Bravo!

Dr. Lavid has written an important contribution to this field. One of the difficulties in apprending stuttering in a complete way is its inherent complexity. Such understanding requires a level of familiarity with interactions between psychological, anatomical, physiological and molecular aspects. These areas are managed superbly by the author; each area is presented concisely with an extent of coverage which will satisfy most readers. For those who wish additional information, sources are provided. An excellent guide to assist those who will be conversing with children and adults who stutter is presented and is extremely valuable.

I have been to Oxford on many occasions for many visits and such, but there was a ton of information that this book had that the average visitor would not know. It was fully of suggestions, bits of history, and unique places to go to while you were at school at Ole Miss. I am grateful for guides like these that will steer other freshman in the right direction.

A powerful glimpse into history

Review Date: 2004-03-07
The collaborative effort of Gordon A. Cotton and Jeff T. Giambrone and extensively illustrated with black-and-white photographs and vintage artworks, Vicksburg And The War tells the Civil War era story of the "most Southern of cities" -- Vicksburg, Mississippi. This was a state which voted against secession from the Union, but became Confederate and contributed both resources and manpower to the Southern side when the Union's army came to bear upon the Confederacy. A wealth of anecdotes and a close study of the battles of 1861 and 1862 (as well as the devastating effects of the Union's occupation after Vicksburg's surrender), Vicksburg And The War is a powerful glimpse into history that emphasizes the lasting Southern spirit and a much appreciated contribution to the growing library of Civil War Studies.

VICKSBURG REVISITED
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-17
Of interest not only to Civil War buffs but to all who follow our country's history, "Vicksburg and the War" offers an in depth look at much that has been overlooked. Generously illustrated this slim volume focuses on the people of Vicksburg, their hopes and the dreaded time of occupation.

As votes indicated the people of Vicksburg were not in favor of secession or the Civil War. However, when the Union army was at their doorstep and they were left with no alternative Vicksburg joined forces with the Confederacy.

Well over 2,500 men trooped off to battle. Many never returned. Along with other Southerners citizens of Vicksburg believed the war would end in a matter of days but the months wore on. For 47 days the city was under siege and then occupied by the enemy for a matter of years.

"Vicksburg and the War" traces military actions in that area as well as military occupation of one of the most "Southern of cities." Perhaps most poignant is the author's documentation of the feelings of Vicksburg's people.
