BILL SHANKLY--ITS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-07
This biography is a super read and a must for the bookshelf of any"Shanks"fan.Anything about Shankly is interesting and entertaining but this one by Stephen F.Kelly is probably the most comprehensive I have read so far.I am an avid Bill Shankly admirer and I was enthralled in this book,I just hated to put it down when my eyes were calling for sleep. From the coal face in Glenbuck,Ayrshire,Scotland, the small mining village where he was born,we are taken on a wonderful soccer journey to Liverpool via Carlisle,Preston,Grimsby and Huddersfield, its all there, the hard times, the Scottish pride, the humour and the great, never ending enthusiasm for the game. You can just see the sparkle in his eyes as he slaps one of his players on the back and proclaims to one and all,"What a great day for football all we need is some green grass and a ball." You also have to chuckle as he briefs his Liverpool team before a big game against a top European team with the words,"You have nothing to worry about, they are just a load of cab horses."Yes this is a football story,a story about a man who was one of a kind,a fiercely proud man,a players manager, a knowledgeable manager loved by many people in the football world.moreso by the Liverpool fans. This book tells it all,you travel the road with Shanks and really could it be better than that,I don't think so.

A psychotic flanker recalls
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-18
I've played rugby for about twenty years. If only I had this when I started I could have avoided many needless trips to the emergency room.

The humor is great with much truth presented in so few pages. Late tackles sticks in my mind, having played flanker/wing forward I always thought the rules never fully allowed enough leeway for really great tackles to be waived off, even if they were late.....by three or four days.

This book should be handed to all prospective rugby players, excepting front rows as they probably wouldn't get the subtle humor.

A very well written book with great, rare photographs. Much more than just a game by game analysis of Bobby Bowdens career. This book gives behind the scenes look at the decisions he made in the games and in his career - I am sure happy he did not take the LSU or Alabama positions when he was considering them! A great book about the all-time coaching win leader!. Well researched.

Awesome Footie Stories
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-25
Awesome collection of 25 short stories and essays about soccer. My favorites were Stephen Baxter's "Clods," Tim Pears' "Ebony International" Nicholas Lezards' "The Beautiful Game," Steve Grant's "Casuals," Geoff Nicholson's "The Winning Side," Mark Morris's "The Shirt," and Mark Timlin's "Wonder Boy." That said, almost every story has something worthwhile about it, and for a soccer fan, this is a must read.

The Tradition Continues
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-21
Growing up in Alabama I had heard about the tradition of Alabama Football. The only history I was familiar with prior to this book was Paul "Bear" Bryant 70's-80's. I didn't know about the earlier years of Alabama football. After reading this book I understand the RICH Tradition of Alabama football. This book is a History book of Alabama football. I reccommend this book to any college football fans, especially Alabama fans who like me may only remember the Bryant 70's-80's years.Knowledge is the key to understanding Alabama Football. Buy the book.

Not your typical sports story
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-27
I received this book as a gift and my first thought was that I didn't want to read a sports story. I was pleasantly surprised when I got into the book. YES, it is a sports story and YES it is so much more. The authors really give great insight to the life of a young person in the high school sports world and the struggles of young Christians in the school enviroment. I applaud Brandon for sharing his story.

My friend and I really admire Brett and the entire Packers team. Being from Washington, we were thrilled to see Mike Holmgren come to the Seahawks. However, Brett is still the best QB in the NFL and this book offers a personal look at different aspects of Favre. It is our dream to one day meet Brett.
