The Pro Football Guide is the next best thing of having all the media guides states the sporting news in one of its ads for the book, and I agree.
The guide starts off with team-by-team pages with 4 pages on each team including their schedule, the basic stats for the last year (not unlike the nfl fact and record book) key (player) won/losses and so on. Then it is a review of the year with every boxscore from every game of the year! If you want to know who was the best rusher in the NFC in week 3 here is the answer, then it is more stats such as player participation, passing and all those "regular" stats by position, and defensival stats such as tackles, assists and sacks. Then it is into the history with writeups of every draft, super bowl and such along with a record book, the book concludes with a team-by-team historical section which is great for every fan. Ever wondered how Jeff Fischers record against the Steelers is. Find out and enjoy. This is the perfect christmas gift for everyone that loves the pro gridiron!

Punt, Pass, and Point

Review Date: 2002-05-31
amy, the main character of Punt, Pass and Point starts the story at low point in her life, so low in fact that she doesn't think she deserves to start her name with a capital A. The girl who can run faster, jump higher and catch the ball better than the boys, the brightest star of the Bay City Hotshots football team, has broken her leg and feels her time in the spotlight is gone. At the ripe old age of 13, she has to hang up her cleats, pack away her uniform and retire. Everything goes downhill after that, including her schoolwork, her grades, and even her interest in celebrating her birthday. A birthday present from her parents, a leotard and a year of lessons at Madam Lezille Camille's School of Ballet, does nothing to improve matters for Amy. Her protests that ballet is for sissies do no good, because the following Saturday morning she is unceremoniously dropped off at class with the admonition to "Behave yourself." It doesn't take Amy long to discover ballet lessons are not quite the sissy sport she thought they were and that she has a few things to learn about herself and others. At a time in which many books tell girls it's "OK" to play football or baseball, it's refreshing to have a book that says it's "OK" to dance ballet too. The central message of this story is be yourself, your best self, no matter what life deals you. Only age 8 when she wrote the book, Bonnie-Alise Leggat's pictures and prose are a match for any adult's and she has produced a book that both boys and girls will enjoy.

I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the quarterback position and I have already learned vasts amounts of knowledge from this book just from reading twenty pages. I highly recommend this book for anybody who wants to learn more about football or who is looking to go into coaching. Ron Jenkins' breaks the game down into pieces that can be digested by everyday fans. I can't wait to read more.

My coach told me to get this book. It really helped me. Just carrying the football differently helped me a lot. I also don't fumble the snap from center just because of the new way I hold my hands. The diagrams and pictures showed me how do everything. The section on defensive fronts really helped because my coaches would talk about a 3 technique and now I know what they mean. I take this book everywhere I go now and would recommend it to other high school quarterbacks.

Behind every successful man is a good woman, and in that respect football is no different than any other walk of life. Every player who pulled on the Royal Blue of Everton Football Club was somebody's hero and in the heat of battle, it was hard to imagine them as anything other than just that. But when the final whistle blew and the fans dispersed to discuss the merits of the match, the players threw their kits into the laundry room and went home to resume their roles of husband, provider and father.

Spanning the decades from the early 1930's to the late 70's, Real Footballers' Wives provides a unique insight into the lives of Everton's heroes from the women who loved them. The wives were the cornerstones of their success both on and off the pitch. Steadfast and loyal, their unsung contribution is woven into the history of this great club, but until now their stories remained untold.

These magnificent women who made many sacrifices for their husbands' glory now tell their personal, touching and unique recollections that would otherwise have been lost in the mists of time.

Featuring: Nancy Young, Maureen Harvey, Pat Labone, Trish Lyons, Rosemary Hurst, Celia Morrissey, Ann West, Norma Vernon, Brenda Thomas, Pat Gabriel, Annette Scott, Carole Dobson, Janet Royle, Eileen Stevens, Marina Kay, Irene Lee, Maureen Temple and grande dame, Dolly Sagar (born 1909).

In-Depth Analysis of Male Divinity

Review Date: 2004-10-13
When Boudica at zodiacbistro.com asked me to review this book, I thought, "Oh great. Yet another Brit who's going to bore us to death about the Lord aspect in Witchcraft and fertility religions and the football is obviously Soccer!" Well I'm glad I was wrong. If you enjoyed the Farrar's "The Witch's God", you'll enjoy this book even better.

Mann starts out with an interesting way of dichotomizing the various aspects of the God within the chapters by entitling them like "Guide to the Underworld", "Shape-Shifter", "The Destroyer and the Destroyed", "The Rising, Climaxing and Falling God" and of course "The God of Games". There are 25 short chapters in all and they are all independent of one another.

Mann basically discusses the various mythological aspects of the God in each chapter and then he gives two or more examples of Gods from different mythological pantheons who fill that role. And to his credit, he does not merely just list the Gods for that particular role, but he explains how the God fits into that role as well.

My personal favorite chapters were 18 "Good & Evil", 19 "The Devil" & 20 "God of Games" where he discusses American Football, not Soccer and how he mentions how the God of the Games "...it is the contest sought by the God of Games. He is not interested in unequaled or overwhelming odds, in occupation or deceit. He wants to see two or more equally matched men attempt to use every ability at their disposal: mental, physical, emotional and spiritual, to contest each other for greatness and honour." Then he goes on to mention how the Irish hero, Cuchulainn, entered a game of hurling when he arrived at the royal seat Ulster, Emain Macha. In Rome, Mars was the Lord of the Games and in Irelan, Teutates ruled over the games.

The bibliography is good as is the index. The only problem with this promotional copy is there's no price on the cover. Michael Mann lives in Glastonbury and has two previous works published that I've not read yet.

I give this book 5 stars from the fact that it's chock full of material to consider about the Male aspect of Deity when so much is written and doted upon the Female aspect within the Neo-Pagan community. It's also laid out well and the material is first rate. I think every Wiccan or Pagan practitioner who decides to want to work with Deity, should consider obtaining a copy of this particular work.

My name is David Cohen. I wrote this book. I hope that anyone with an interest in the history of pro football, particularly fans of the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns, will give this book a look.

It focuses on the seasons from 1946 to 1950 when the Eagles and Browns - who were in different leagues until 1950 - were the world's two best football teams. I was able to talk to or correspond with dozens of old players, from Hall of Famers like Otto Graham, Chuck Bednarik, Steve Van Buren, Lou Groza and Crazy Legs Hirsch to guys who only had a cup of coffee in the NFL; much of what they had to say is woven into my narrative. I wanted to share their stories and bring those years to life again.

Football history is a topic that interests me, and I would recommend this book to other people interested in this topic. Primarily this book is about the 1946 through 1950 seasons of pro football. The Cleveland Browns and, especially, the Philadelphia Eagles are spotlighted. This was an intriguing era in pro football as World War II had ended and the talent and manpower shortage of the National Football League during the war years came to an end. In fact, the influx of talent was sufficient for the creation of the AAFC, a rival league to the NFL where the Browns got their start.

The book has no index, no photos (other than on the cover), and probably a more-than-average amount of typos for a book that size. However, all these things are fairly unimportant. The quality of the narrative is what stands out. The author combined original research (such as interviews) with published sources. What I liked best was that I felt that the author made sure to get his facts straight and his presentation avoided the sensationalized exaggerations and undocumented tales sometimes passed down as football history. The author earned my trust.

The book combined recounts of individual seasons with a lot of interesting information about the changing dynamics of the game. It put things in context better than many other books I've read. The explanation of the gradual change from two-way players to having offensive and defensive specialists was very good. Also, for years I've wondered why it is that when I watch old football film clips that when a player has just been tackled, sometimes the play isn't considered over and he gets up and keeps running and sometimes not. Now I know.

One of the all time great running backs in the NFL Tony Dorsett leaves nothing to the imagination as he describes the his life from childhood, to the University of Pittsburgh, to the Dallas Cowboys and the end of his career with the Denver Broncos. A must read to learn about all the difficulties of being in the spotlight. One of the best books I have read.

I have almost every book thats been put out on the 49ers and now i added this one. This book's entire emphasis is on the great 49er players from the past so it's a great read to see what they are doing today. There are a ton of names not here of course but the author rounded up quite a few to talk about. Appropriately, there are 49. Having watched a number of these players, and a good amount i never had the privilege to see, (a few are from the 1946 team!!),this book was obviously very intriguing to me. I think i was most captivated by Eason Ramson's story. Pick this book up and enjoy!

Being an avid Forty niner fan I wasnt thrilled about this upcoming season, until I picked up Matt Maiocco's book on our heroes of previous years. I devoured the book in a couple of days and felt like I was still connected to these Warriors. After finishing the book I am fired up for the season to begin and cant wait to see what author Maiocco has planned for his 3rd Forty Niner story. Any true fan of the Niners needs to pick this book up.

This book is not an autobiography but a great look back on the experiences of the late great George Best among others. It was a captivating hilarious read which makes me wish I could have seen him in one of his after hours shows. The book is a show in itself and shows a side of what football (Soccer in N. America) was and still should be really all about...the good times. Sadly George did this to excess and eventually paid the price but then what a life. The stories are not all about George Best but collections of various football lore. Well worth the purchase price.

Captivating reading from cover to cover brought back memories of the golden age of football in the 60's and 70's. Great look at the life of one of the greatest players the game has ever seen. Fantastic insights into Bestie's life and the life of a professional footballer of the times. Also sheds some interesting and entertaining tidbits on some of the other football stars of the day.
