Edna Boies Hopkins was a part of the art colony in Provincetown, Massachusetts during the early part of the 20th Century. After traveling in Europe and Asia she was part of the group experimenting with innovations in woodblock printing, in her case, with stunning results. This books brings to life her work, done in many parts of the United States and adds mightily to the biographical information available which had not been examined in depth until now. Mr. Vasseur is to be commended for his superlative effort.

Copiously illustrated in black and white, it includes exteriors, interiors and plans for libraries, schools, colleges, museums and music halls. Histories of the development of each type of institution in Ohio are thorough and clearly written. Extensive index and bibliography make this a true scholarly work of great usefulness to anyone interested in the subject.

This wonderful book has recieved little circulation and I rate it among the true classics. Like Rolvaag's "Giants in the Earth", this narration of pioneering Americana touches to the very heart of the people of the time. The author himself has one of the most interesting backgrounds imaginable. The author, Albert Wass, the last Count of Transylvania (Count Dr. Albert Wass de Czege) . Fled the communists as a youth, and at the end of the war, after serving in the Hungarian army made his way to Germany and surrendered himself to the American forces. Wass de Czege and five school age sons emigrated to the United States in 1951. The following year they settled to Astor Florida, where he became involved in the first local newspaper. While his own background is truly amazing, it fails to answer how he recieves the insight to breathe life into the charecters Elza and Jacob. This book is based on fact, and succeeds in catching the feelings, and putting them into words. Reconstructing the past, the dreams, the struggles, successes and failures
of these long gone people, who left their footprints on the banks of the Ohio.

INDEX to the Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy 1750-1930 by William Wade Hinshaw.

DearREADERS, "Totally thrilled" describes my feelings as I received my copy of the index to our library's copy of William Wade Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy 1750-1930. This past summer I discovered I have Welsh and English Quaker ancestry in Chester County, PA. (Merion on the Welsh Tract.) Prior to this I'd had no personal experience doing Quaker Research.

When I asked others about Quaker Research, they raved about Mr. Hinshaw's six volume compilation of Friend's Monthly Meeting records listing births, deaths, marriages and removals. That last term refers to entries in the church books when Society of Friends members moved from one area to another. They were removed from the old Monthly Meeting membership in order to join the new group.

We're fortunate to have Mr. Hinshaw's complete set of Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy at our local public library. As I uncover new names to research, I'll be turning again and again to Henshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy.

From the publisher: "William Wade Hinshaw's renowned Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, originally published between 1936 and 1950. Containing approximately 500,000 entries.. each volume ha[s] a separate surname index..."

"Almost no class of records, religious or secular, has been kept as meticulously as the monthly meeting records of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The oldest such records span three centuries of American history and testify to a general movement of population that extended from New England and the Middle Atlantic states southward to Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia; then west to Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The importance of these records cannot be overstated. Not until recently have the vital statistics of Quakers been recorded in civil record offices.

Thus, for more than two centuries, the only vital records identifying these people are to be met with in the Quaker records themselves. Fortunately, the monthly meeting records contain extensive lists of births, marriages, and deaths, as well as details of the removal of members from one meeting to another. (The monthly meeting, during which vital statistics are recorded, is in fact, a business meeting.)"

Painstakingly developed from these monthly meeting records, Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy is the magnum opus of Quaker genealogy. In its production, thousands of records were located and abstracted into a uniform and intelligible system of notation. The data gathered in these volumes of the Encyclopedia are arranged by meeting, then alphabetically by family name, and chronologically thereunder. Volume 1: NORTH CAROLINA Volume II: NEW JERSEY AND PENNSYLVANIA Volume III: NEW YORK Volume IV: OHIO Volume V: OHIO Volume VI: VIRGINIA"

If as the publisher suggests, 50% of our pre-1850 US ancestors were Quaker, than every researcher needs a personal copy of the index, and every genealogy library needs the six volume Encyclopedia!

The best book about Cleveland, ever!

The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History (2nd Edition) is my favorite Cleveland book. I am an avid Cleveland lover and have approximately 100 books on the topic of Cleveland and it's rich history. Of all those books, this is the one that I respect most. You can find out almost anything about Cleveland, Northeast Ohio, Cuyahoga County, and all of the suburbs of Cleveland, including those outside of the county. The book is written like an encyclopedia with entries for different topics/subjects/people/events/cities/streets/stories/etc. There are many pictures throughout (in black and white only) and there is information on just about every single possible thing a Clevelander could want to know. If you aren't able to afford this book, there is an online version available thru either Case Western or the Western Reserve Historical Society's website. This a very well-written book by some of Cleveland's best scholar's, of past and present.

I'm delighted to see this title available again, even if only as a used book. It is simply a great little book. Gordon is a poet who knows some Chinese, unlike most "translators" of Chinese, including even some of the famous (and best) ones. If only there were a marketing combine to catch the magic of books like this and keep it (them) in print. Good anthologies flash and are gone, the mediocre (I guess because they don't sell at ALL)seem to hang on. Gordon has two other books of Chinese translations: look for them by his name.

In an age where criticism sounds more and more like the sigh of a dying culture, Tate reminds us of the fundamental truth's of the human condition that are revealed by a certain poetic vision which at once transcends and underscores religion, politics, literature, and poetry. He is a writer that I find myself constantly returning to not merely to gain insight into the particular works in question, but rather to remember the importance of reading literature and poetry in the first place. Tate is one of the best poet's and critics of the 20th century (very much akin to T.S. Eliot in both form and content) but due to his sympathies for the Antebellum South which is heretical in academia, and a growing infatuation with criticism that is divorced from the poetic imagination from which literature springs, Tate is less read than he should be.

When our dog was diagnosed with cancer, we had a very hard time finding information and making decisions. We were able to talk more intelligently with the vet after reading this book. We also have a dog with diabetes. This book helped us navigate care issues with her, too.
Thanks!
