This is an attempt by biological anthropologists to bridge what they see as the ever increasing gap between cultural/symbolic/postmodern approaches to anthropology and biological/medical/scientific approaches. This divide is apparently destroying many departments and is moving both of the two approaches away from what makes anthropology distinctive as a field (its comprehensivity). The merging of theories is great for an early (and I hear solitary) attempt at this and the case studies are fascinating and maybe not quite as brilliant as the earlier post would have it. Still, this is a must read for people who are concerned with where anthropology is going.

This is a must read for anyone interested in Northwest Indiana and/or the South Chicago suburbs. I use it as a reference when exploring the "Region". I have also used it as a gift for friends that grew up here and have since relocated.

I went to a book signing when this book was first printed, a few years ago and purchased this directly from a store and had it signed by Ken Schoon. I have lent it to several family members, who swore they'd return it and I had to retrieve the book from their house. If you're from the NW Indiana, you'll be amazed at the detailed facts about the area and even specific landmarks that still exist today, like "Ridge Road" in Hobart, was the ridge of lake michigan, where the indians had a path. Stuff like that. I highly suggest this book.

This is the most accurate and thorough book on Charlie Parker's music, and contains an excellent, concise account of his life. Unfortunately, my textbook supplier says it's out of print.
Woideck's excellent _A Charlie Parker Companion_ is my other favorite book on the subject -- also out of print! I have wanted to use these two books in popular graduate seminars I teach on Parker's music, but haven't been able to obtain them.

I have the honor of being one of Carl Woideck students in his various jazz related classes at the University of Oregon and I can say without a doubt that this man knows his jazz. This book is an extension of who Charlie Parker was to his music and to the public -- filled with many personal insights about the man and his legend. This book is truly a must for any fan of Bird or popular music in general.

I RATE THIS BOOK 5 STARS BECAUSE IT IS A GREAT BOOK FOR BOTH THE BEGINNER AND THE ADVANCED ESL LEARNER OR STUDENT. AS AN ENGLISH MAJOR, I LIKE READING AND SKIMMING THROUGH THE PAGES OF GRAMMAR BOOKS AND WHAT NOT THAT I COULD GET MY MIND TO ABSORB INFO, AND THIS BOOK DOES EXACTLY WHAT I WANT TO GET OUT OF A GREAT TEXT---LEARN AND LET IT STAY THERE IN THE PERSON'S BRAIN. THIS DEFINITELY IS A GREAT TEXT.

I use this book with my adult ESL students. It is clearly written and extremely effective in reinforcing English grammar in an intelligent fashion. The content level is perfect for Non-English speaking older students. It addresses issues that a more mature student can relate to such as Geography or Current Events to cement a grammar concept rather than using balloons or puppies. It,also, employs different techniques and examples to do the same thing. I feel that my students are more interested in learning by using this book and that often the content encourages other English speaking activities.

In reading over ten thousand books, I found this one to be really exceptional. Editor Yonah Alexander did an excellent job describing terrorism in its many forms, and how each different kind of group can be defeated. The only down-side in this book was all the groups that were discussed we not "apocalyptic terrorist", or groups of terrorists that are not religious in nature. This is an very detailed book about secular terrorist groups, from the Maoist Sendero Luminoso to the militant Japanese Red Army and the narco-terrorists of South America. Countries dealing with terrorism in this book include:
United States
Argentina
Peru
Colombia
Spain
United Kingdom
Israel
Turkey
India
Japan
A superb resources with lots of detailed information. A excellent and superior resource!

I thought that this book, an edited volume of experts from various countries on strategies to combat terrorism was done very well. The perspectives of (in-country) European, U.S., Latin American, Middle Eastern, and Asian analysts shows that terrorism is a global problem and there must be global solutions. The contributors also discuss the consequences of 9/11 so that adds to the helpfulness of the book.

I just finished reading Companions for the Passage, and would like to offer my thoughts. The recent publication of this book was quite a coincidence, since my mother passed away a couple of months ago. She had Parkinson's Disease and could no longer swallow. She and the family declined a feeding tube, and she was brought home for her final days.
Hospice got involved, and I can't say enough good things about what they do. I can't imagine getting through all that we did without their help.
I found Marjorie Ryerson's book to be a great source of insight and in some ways comfort in dealing with my feelings. It made me realize what a momentous thing we had witnessed, and that we were not alone or unique in our experience. None of the individual stories were identical to our experience, but I found that there were aspects of each story that I could relate to.
I would think that this book would be on Hospice's highly recommended reading list.

This book was given to me about six weeks after my wife of 47 years had passed away. She had a horrific 14 week battle against lung cancer, which had spread to her spine, pelvis and ribs. I had been a primary caregiver for her both at home and during her time in the hospital and hospice. I was with her when she passed. Nearly every interview in this book contained something to which I could relate or which I had experienced. Many lines triggered memories with all the resultant emotion and feelings. Reading the similar experiences of others was consoling and supportive during this time of my grieving. This book should be on every hospice book shelf. It is excellent for anyone dealing with terminal illness or the grief of the loss of a loved one.

What a great book for adults and children. It is so nice to learn the history of the Petoskey stone. Gives you ideas of where to go and find them. I highly recommended this book to anyone who visits Lake Michigan and Lake Huron( I'v found many of these fossils in Lake Huron as well) and enjoys to look at the rocks and pick up a few along your travels on the shore.Reading this makes me wish I was a geologist myself!

rock collector, both novice and experienced. Detailed information on all aspects of the Petoskey stone are presented in a enjoyable and straightforward manner. The origin, history, location, finishing techniques [shaping, polishing] and craft uses of Michigan's state stone are all covered. To say Bruce Mueller & William Wilde's book will increase your knowledge and enjoyment of this beautiful stone is a understatement. This book provides readers with the precise location of sites in which one is likely to find Petoskey stones. On my first visit to a location described in "The Complete Guide to Petoskey Stones", I found more & larger Petoskey stones [around 30] in 2 hours than I'd found in the past four years.
In August, I had the privilege of meeting author Bruce Mueller at his rock shop, C & M Rock Shop, which is just outside of Honor, Michigan. Mr Mueller was warm, friendly and willing to answer questions concerning the Petoskey Stone. Bruce Mueller was also kind enough to sign my copy of "Complete Guide to Petoskey Stones" and "Lake Michigan Rock Pickers Guide". Both of Bruce Mueller's wonderful books have been invaluable in enhancing my understanding of, ability to locate and uses for the treasures lying along Lake Michigan's beaches.

The Copper Country of Michigan has long been my favorite place in the world to visit, because of the matchless combination of water and mountains, unique in Michigan. And now I feel as if I know the area even more intimately.
The storytelling blends all the elements in such a way that I read the book from beginning to end at one sitting. It's a wonderful addition to my library, one I will always treasure.

Although this book is really just a family genealogy of a rather ordinary immigrant family, I found this very interesting as I was living in the Keweenaw peninsula when I read it and could imagine all the places mentioned. The mine owners are portrayed is quite over-the-top benevolent in the labor relations. The story is very well told.

Tom Leatherman is a genius......His psychic abilities are amazing. He is so damn smart, he can actually read poeples minds. His life has been dedicated to these studies, and just think where mankind would be if we could'nt identify the "barrirers" to prenatel care among the poor suffering minorities of South Carolina. What would we do if he had not studied the dietary changes of the Mayan poeple.
I say hooray to this book and hooray to all of the life changing work professor leathermen is working on.
BRAVO ! ! !
