I have to admit that I'm a bit biased. The author was my wife, and I helped with the assembly of the book. Marilyn was a very gifted writer, but passed away unexpectedly in 1998, forever silencing her voice. Miami County was her home, and she dearly loved it and its rich circus heritage. That love can be seen in every word and picture in this book. I highly recommend it, especially if you are a fan of early circus history.

I have a copy of this book and can not stop going through it. You can get a full sense of life in Miami County, Indiana over a great span of years. The picture are spectacular, and the text is informative and interesting. If you lived there, or know someone who did, or if you're doing genealogy research for this location I highly recommend you purchase this book!

Now scattered in small communities in Northern Indiana, the Eastern Miami Indians have lived in undeserved obscurity since the 1840s. In 1791 Chief Little Turtle and the Miami inflicted the worst defeat ever of an American army by Indians. The Miami ceded most of Indiana in a series of treaties beginning after the War of 1812. Chief Richardville led Miami resistence to removal which finally took place in 1846. Half of the Miami tribe was exempted and many more returned from Kansas Territory to rebuild the home community. The Indiana Miami negotiated a new treaty in 1854 that guaranteed their way of life and slowly adapted to late 19th century American society. Hunting, fishing and casual labor continued as they had in the past, while some children were sent to far off federal Indian schools. Others began working for the many circuses that wintered in Peru, Indiana, beginning in the 1880s. Legal tragedy struck the tribe in 1897 when their treaty rights were abruptly terminated. Their effort to regain status under federal Indian law has involved them intimately in twentieth-century American Indian history. In recent years, the Indiana Miami have become more visible as they have again sought restoration of their treaty rights and have revitalized their culture. The first history of the Eastern Miami tribe, this volume is a fascinating combination of social, legal, and economic history, much enhanced by folklore and a rich series of maps and photographic images.

Stewart Rafert is adjunct professor of history at the University of Delaware.

Layne Cameron has truly given Indiana cyclists something to be proud of. He has displayed, with inciteful commentary and fun humor, the best mountain biking Indiana has to offer and the interesting monuments these trails have near their locale. This book is an all-terrain cycling Bible with wonderful maps and excellent directions. Thanks Layne!

An essential guide for any mountain biker in Hoosier land.

This is a book that any mountain biker in Indiana, Eastern Illinois, or Northern Kentucky should have. Dozens of trails, helpful directions, and contour maps. There are a number of terrific, yet out of the way single-track trails included. The only negative is that it is a bit dated.

My mom is a avid reader and has read the series. She will probably read them again, |But she has a question about the quilt that hangs in Indiana. She would like to see it. Could you tell me where it is at. She is a quilter still at 86. Thank you Ann Bingham

The book interested me initially because it was about McClures written by a McClure. I was quite amazed at how closely it resembled my own McClure family's saga. I would very much like to discuss it with the author if she reads these reviews.

Dealing with music
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-04
I liked very much this book because of its scholarly yet plain approach to the troubaudor's music (not trouvères). It deals with every important aspect of troubaudor music; history, biographies, sources, influence of oral tradition, philological problems (notation, rythm, textual variants, etc.), genres, musical analysis, form, theoretical writtings, performance, etc.

There should be more books like this!! Muy recomendable!!

Excellent tour of the Hoosier State

Review Date: 2007-10-23
Of the various books that goes to various places of a state, especially those for Indiana, this is my favorite. With full-color high-quality pictures, the book discusses 101 different locales. A few are state historic sites, a few are state parks, a few are private affairs. It even tells how to get to each place. Since the selection was not based on 101 Greatest Places, but merely 101 places worthy of mention, it easily allows for further book in a series, allowing for at least 3 more books of a similar vein. Plus, with it being backed by Indiana Historical Society, it means that it is worthy of both the enjoyment of the would be tourist, but of the scholar as well.

This is a marvelous book. One of the finest compliations of the (do they have a name?) - the poets who came after elliot, biship, and pound, i.e merwin, bly, snyder . . . The thing that makes this book most valuable are the essay's contributed by the poets themselves on the topic of free verse. I love it.

I bought this book a while back and am entirely pleased with my purchase. I use this book on the job as well as for personal use. The photos are the best I have ever seen in a book like this. They are essential for accurate identification. This is used as a text book, so you know that is very detailed, but it is also very useful to anyone with an interest in trees. I highly recommend it!
