10 Stars for Terry Frei's Broncos Memories

If you ever lived in Denver, loved the Broncos, stomped your feet until they hurt and the stadium swayed, sat in freezing weather through winless seasons, but never gave up hope...this is the read for you! Terry Frei nailed it. The 70's in Denver after graduating from CSU were amazing, and nothing was better than the Orange Crush. We all looked terrible in orange, but we wore it all and often. I still have some Crush t-shirts and wear them proudly down here in Cowboys country. All the memories of Elitch's (the old, real one), greyhound races, and more came flooding back in time. I have read the book twice from front to back and especially like the chapter about "where they are now." I guarantee you it's worth the money. Go Broncos!!!

I was 10 years old at the time and my family lived in the heart of Denver. Benton street was filled with kids growing up knowing only 1 thing. The Denver Broncos were for real and Craig Morton was the real deal. If you have had any exposer to the lure of Bronco-mania you have got to check out this book. As I was humming through the pages I could almost smell the smog and feel the hope of a Superbowl victory for our mighty underdog team. Looking back I do believe everything I owned was Orange and it's a fact that Orange Crush pop was invented in honor of the team. About every trip to the mall meant meeting another team member and it was nuts how accessible these athletes were.
...and this book has allowed me to re-live the memories in more detail than I ever had access to. It was a wonderful romp down memory lane and reminded me that as a young boy living in Denver was truly special. If your from Denver or have ever seen it on the map and like the Broncos this is a must read! Totally enjoyable and complete this book delivered. For me this nugget of time and how the authors captured it struck pure gold in the heart of a great city.

This a great book about the 1977 Denver Bronco's. The book gives a history of the season from training camp to the Super Bowl and profiles the players that made it all happen. It also provides information about what was going on in Denver during this time and how the town was caught up in Broncomania and the Orange crush defense.
There are some black and white photos in the middle of the book and there are stats at the end which summaries the season. The book gives a behind the scenes look at what happened in the 1977 season from the prospectives of the players and coaches. There is much detail including a nice description of the player revolt that let to John Ralston's firing and Red Miller's hiring.
At the end of the book there is a summary of each player that tells what they did after 1977 and where they are now. Overall, this a very well written book. If you are a football fan of the 1970's, or the Denver Bronco's in general, this is a must read.

When I first heard about Mr Frei's upcoming book and the subject, I knew I had to have it. I received the book for Christmas and couldn't put it down! I have been recommending it to friends and family alike.
This newest book is a must for Broncos fans everywhere! Reading this book took me back to '77 and the excitement that the Broncos generated across the entire state, but it's not just for those who lived through that glorious season. This book will give current Broncos, and football fans in general, a fascinating look at the moment the Broncos became a "big league" team and the City of Denver evolved into a "big league" city.
Having been a Broncos fan for years and years, I was captivated by the the manner in which Mr Frei wrote about the backgrounds and histories of the players and coaches of that team and then filled us in on what those players and coaches are doing with their lives today. He also provides an inside look at the sports scene in Denver as seen through his eyes as a young reporter.
Mr Frei helped me re-live the moment and also catch up with the lives of those players who gave Broncos fans thrills for years and years!
A definite read for football fans everywhere.

I first ordered this book for my son-in-law, because he is such a Charlie Daniels fan. I then ordered a copy for a friend of mine who is going through a rough time in her life right now. Before giving it away, I flipped through the pages, and read the story by Jonny Lang. I am a 61 yr. old grandmother, but I have albums by him. I was just blown away, and had to order a copy for myself.

In the book, How Do You Know He's Real, you'll get an inside look into the spiritual lives of 34 celebrities. Hagberg has compiled testimonies ranging from Kirk Cameron to Rudy Sarzo (former bass player for Ozzy Osbourne). Each story is remarkably different and it's amazing to read how God has worked in the lives of each of these well-known people.

The author has collected very readable stories telling how celebrities have become Christians, and they share their low points and their joys here. This is a welcome peek into the lives of well known people who typically are more secretive.
Ricky Skaggs, Kirk Cameron, Gloria Gaynor, Bethel Johnson (34 people in all) tell about their struggles and their early days as new Christians.
Billy Ray Cyrus tells of singing in his grandpa's Pentecostal church when he was 4, and includes the touching lyrics to the song he wrote "The other side."
Jackie (Jacklyn) Zeman, star of General Hospital, advises that when you are at a crossroads "cry out to God and ask for His guidance."
Al Kasha's story resonated with me; this Academy Award winning songwriter overcame agoraphobia, and talks about how Hollywood is a tough place for a Jew who came to Christ, and how he started a Hollywood Bible study group.
There are stories here for anyone to enjoy and find spirit lifting.

(Hagberg has written a companion book with the same title, subtitled God Unplugged)
How Do You Know He's Real? is a collection of celebrity essays about God acting in their lives. The contributors include athletes, musicians, and actors. Their stories often follow a familiar pattern of fame leading to drugs and alcohol before hitting bottom and being turned around by an encounter with God. That's not to say the accounts are all stock and cliched, but rather that God meets each person in their need--and for celebrities that need will be similar. And many of the tales include growing up in stable Christian homes, but still needing to make personal decisions about God and Christ and how that decision impacted their careers.
The stories are collected alphabetically but Hagberg has provided a topic finder so a reader battling discouragement or frustration can find offerings from Billy Ray Cyrus, Nancy Stafford, Zorro, Gary Burghoff or John Schneider.
Each essay begins with a picture and short biography of the contributor, listing their accomplishments. Following the selection is God's Road Map, a few sentences about the issues raised by the author, with Bible verses for teaching and encouragement.
The essays themselves are as varied as the contributors. Some of them read as if they were written to be given as speeches. Several sound like the writer could be sitting at your kitchen table, chatting over the coffee pot. All of them are honest and share from their heart how God has acted in their life and how they know He's real.
Reading the accounts of God acting in both miraculous and mundane ways reminds us that no matter what a person does for a living, each of us are created beings who need a loving Savior and merciful God.
Armchair Interviews says: Up close and personal stories from celebrities.

This is one of the best books one can find about John Elway. Sure, it misses much of the autobiographical details, but it gets down to business quite well, distilling John's football life into its essential components. Its strength arises from diversity of perspective. Not only do you hear Mike Shannahan's memories and opinions, but also Dan Reeve's and the words have a healing effect for us long term fans. Likewise, hearing not only from key Bronco team mates but also from his rivals gives one the complete story.
This is a Great book for all Broncos fans. A++++

I got this book from my wife as a birthday present, and immediately sat down and read it cover to cover. I knew a lot of the info in the book already, having been a Bronco fan since 1972, but it did refresh a lot of old (and somewhat painful) memories. I feel this book is a "must have" for any Bronco/Elway fan.

This book offers commentary and descriptins of John Elway by other NFL teammates, players, and coaches. Included are chapters by Mike Shanahan, Terrell Davis, Brett Favre, Dan Reeves, and Clay Matthews (who played for the Cleveland Browns, against the Broncos in 3 AFC Championship games). Each individual's comments are very interesting, as they all offer a different perspective.
The only drawback is that the book appears to have been completed before Super Bowl 33; so Dan Reeves does not offer his views on coaching *against* Elway in a Super Bowl. A minor critique, though, as he still provides an interesting read.
The book is also filled with many excellent photos from Elway's NFL and college days.

"106 Yards" gets 5 stars from me. As one who began following Al Carmichael's exploits as a post-war star with the El Toro Marines, at Santa Ana College, as a USC Trojan and in the NFL, I thoroughly enjoyed this editorial and pictorial trip, which brought back so many great and nostalgic memories. It's a "must read" for every USC fan or alum, as well as anyone who appreciates one of football's truly "class acts."

I also am very enthusiastic about having a copy of this book. There is information and pictures here that can't be found anywhere else.
I thought I'd provide some information about the book itself. It is a yearbook type presentation, 160 pp, glossy paper, about half color photos and about half black and white. I'd say it is about 60% images and about 40% text. Table of Contents: The Early Years 1960-1966, Growing Years 1967-1976, Beginnings of Excellence 1977-1984, Ring of Fame, Statistics. There are mini profiles of key players and coaches, 14 pp of the "Ring of Fame" (Hall of Fame.) And statistics -- 16 pp of them. (I particularly like the fact that time is spent on the very early years of the franchise. There's a picture of a game against Houston with the stands 80% empty. Got to have been a scrimmage or preseason or something.)

John Elway: Armed and Dangerous, by Clay Latimer, is a must for the John Elway and Denver Bronco fans. It is an easy to read book on Elway's career and personal life filled with quotes from players and unknown stories about other football greats. It sometimes drags a little as it gets off the subject quite a bit.

This book is a great read for Bronco and Elway fans of any age. It chronicles the life of John Elway from the time he was a child, through college and his joining of the Broncos, to his victory against the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. Black and white pictures are included with each chapter, and the center section 14 pages of color photos, as well. The author (Clay Lattimer) is a sports writer for the Rocky Mountain News, and he also draws on Sports Illustrated, Becket Football Monthly, and even Newsweek, as well as several other sports sources, so he packs a lot of information, dates, and statistics into each chapter. He also packs a lot of superfluous detail, too -- the writing meanders a bit and doesn't always stay on focus. But hey -- if you're an Elway fan (like me), who cares? The book is fun to read even in the places where it goes off topic. If there was such a thing as a "definitive" biography of an Elway, this would probably be it. If you're an Elway fan, get this book and enjoy it!

I was there in 1977 when the Denver Broncos made it to the Super bowl. I was a fan then and a fan now. However, this book showed the true man behind the image and honestly, his posing. Lyle had a big heart and I respected that. I met him as a child and he gave me this advice; "hurt them before they hurt you."
His life was cut short and ended tragically. This book was awesome! I own it and will keep it around for a 2nd and 3rd reading. Its well worth the buy even if you are reading a worn out, tattered copy...
