I bought this for my mom as part of her Christmas present this year and she can't stop telling me how much she's enjoying reading it. She has only recently discovered Miss Read and she tells me she can't get enough of the series. If you enjoy a provincial read, then Miss Read is the way to go!

I came across Miss Read's books by accident and have become addicted. They are the best treatment for stress I've discovered lately. Nothing ever happens in them, and yet they keep you engaged. I've read them out of order, which is not a serious handicap. Now that Nelly and Albert Piggot are reconciled, sort of, I'm trying to find which book tells how they ever married in the first place - what an odd couple! Fey Dotty Harmer and bluff Ella Bembridge and the batty Lovelock sisters are a hoot. If you don't require suspense and action in a book, you may enjoy these as much as I have.

always a pleasure

If you are new to Miss Read books, you can start anywhere in any of the series and find pure enjoyment. If you wish to go to a place where life is friendly but with its ups and downs, where the characters become friends you will grow to love, and the descriptions are warm and inviting, then these are the books for you.
If you are a fan of Jan Karon books, then you are in for a real treat, as Jan's books are warm and inviting but nothing in comparison to Miss Read.
If you have had a stressful day, or feeling down or alone, or want some relaxing peace and quiet, then you must buy Miss Read. I have read all her books and all are wonderful with characters you will remember for years to come and yes, even find similar to people you know in real life.
So prepare for a cozy evening, grab a Miss Read book and prepare to have the time fly. One can't say enough about these books.
Thrush Green is only one beginning!

I've corresponded on and off over the last few years with Mrs. Dora Saint, our "Miss Read", and had the pleasure of speaking with her by phone one christmas.

i have all of her books, garnered from new and used book stores over the years, and truly love her special prose.

i received a card from her daughter today in response to one that i sent, congratulating Miss Read on the 50th anniversary of her first book, Village School. Her mother is still with us, but sadly is blind now in her 90s.

her final book was A Peaceful Retirement... I can only wish her the same.

An impressive panorama of the TV era

Alex McNeill's "Total Television" is one of those reference works which is useful both for settling trivia arguments at parties and for helping those engaged in serious scholarly study of television programs and their impact upon popular culture. As of this review, "Total Television" is in its fourth edition.

The book is basically an alphabetical encyclopedia of thousands of television programs in every possible genre: dramas, sitcoms, game shows, cartoons, and more. Each entry lists the series' air dates, principal performers, and other relevant data.

In addition to the main body of encyclopedic entries, the book includes a wealth of supplemental features: lists of Emmy winners, a chronological gathering of one-shot specials, and more. Particularly interesting are the programming grids, which show the nightly lineups on each network for each night of the week. You can turn to a season (say, 1951-52) and see what choices the American TV viewer had each night! This feature is great for historians.

Although most of the entries on each series are brief, McNeill spends more time and space on certain series of outstanding impact. These extended articles on "All in the Family," "CBS Evening News," "Dallas," "The Ed Sullivan Show," and more are truly fascinating.

TV has been derided by many with such epithets as "the Boob Tube" and "The Idiot Box." On the other hand, it was praised in an episode of "The Simpsons" as "teacher, mother. . . secret lover." McNeill captures TV in all of its facets: from the depths of inanity to the heights of cultural significance. This book is a great achievement whose reputation, I believe, will increase with future editions.

This reference is superb in it's completeness. Anything you want to know about any program broadcast from 1948-1996 is in this 1251 page book. The 88 page index of names of performers appearing during those years is unbelievable. It includes specials, miniseries and the top 20 rated shows for each of those years. I use this reference at least 2 to 3 times a week.

Where this book is not as easy to use as Brooks and Marsh's "Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows"(see my review for this one), it offers more-as far as the addition of daytime shows and more explanation of the entries. I like the other guide mainly because it's a good quick reference for prime time. However, if I'm really interested in detail or, again, a daytime program-like some Saturday morning cartoon of my childhood-then this is the one to get. I have both books, actually-for reasons specified here.

First, we might note that "... To the Present," in the book's title, means through late 1995. So nothing in the last ten years is included. For years, I have enjoyed "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows, 1946-Present" by Brooks and Marsh. I prefer the format of the Brooks and Marsh book to that of the NcNeil book--e.g., the cast is in list form, which makes for easier and quicker reading; the showing time is also included. The chief advantage of the McNeil book is that it includes daytime TV, which the Brooks and Marsh book does not.

Alex McNeil's "Total Television" is the Mother of all TV reference volumes. If you can't find it here, it ain't worth knowin' about. How he was able to compile all this information covering 50+ years of TV is beyond me. Crack open this book at any page and you will be reading for hours, probably days.

Magic has got to be one of the most fun games ever created, and even reading about someone elses partaking in that fun makes for an enjoyable reading experience. Jamie's book is pretty much a personal dairy completely pertaining to his preparation for and in Magic tournaments.

He'll give you some idea about what makes a tournament winning deck, of course, only your practice will ever perfect this. He opened my eyes to the fact that a majority of the decks are built around the key cards of each color. i.e. If you're playing black, you're probably facing Necro. What this means for you--even if you don't get to play frequently--is you can browse the internet to find out the trend decks or cards and be pretty certain you'll face them on the tournament scene. Right now, Masticore and Cursed Scroll seem to be biggies for several of the top decks.

In a sentence, you can learn a lot about what to expect at Pro Tours without ever leaving your home. This book was a fun read.

Couldn't wait to start reading this one after having read Mr. Simpson's first work, Until Death Do Us Part. This book was just as addictive. Mr. Simpson's style of writing is such that he brings you into the story physically somehow and you're wandering through the tale with the characters! This installment had me at the edge of my seat and once again got through this book in record time. You are missing out if you've not read this man's work. Bring on Unconditional Love!

Loved it! This was another page turner Mr. Simpson. He showed how at all elements of society were intertwined: corporate businesses, gangs, and academia. He weaved the paranoia of corporate business' love of money in the seemingly senseless killings of citizens. He showed how money and power are always an underlying evil. This takes a peek in how the internet is shaping the younger generation. Great development of the character Micah. He showed Micah's range of emotions and depth as a character. She is not just a killing machine gone wild. Great to have a woman kicking butt with no regrets. I also appreciate you keeping Bishop a true thug gentleman.

THRILLING and ADDICTIVE!!!! In his second book, the author clearly depicts how a woman can hold down a dangerous career, express her undying love for her man, while being the lovable, huggable and adorable mother to their two year old daughter. Micah's "bad girl" persona, coupled with her "love for Noah" is detailed in this thrill seeking, roller coaster ride you will experience in the new business partnership she has formed with Bishop (the bad boy). Their love/friendship for Noah is the ties that keep the new business partnership binded on a professional but more often brother/sister bickering level. The author has a "nack" for holding your interest, maintaining the mystery and thrill, while educating you on the "ways of the world". I read this book in one day and am now writing to Mr. Simpson's website to encourage the completion of his third book. WATCH OUT WORLD, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED..A TALENTED AUTHOR IS IN OUR MIST....Purchase the books and......ENJOY THE RIDE!!!!!

This is a very good series, despite being so short. I love how the mysteries are incorporated with tidbits of astrology. It's really very interesting and engrossing. Another thing I love is the blossoming romance between Lily and Hiromi is so fun and you'll be screaming for them to get together the whole time. Lily is an astrology whiz who has just taken over her missing mother's job; Spica. Spica is a detective who uses her secret ring to call upon the spirits of each sign to help her solve the murder or mystery. The little spirits are adorable and each has a distinctive personality based on their representative sign. Throughout each book their will be author's notes telling you about the sign being investigated at the time. The mysteries themselves are varied and some (as in later in the series) can be downright frightening! This isn't a book that will scare you, however. It's a story about mystery, lost love, a missing parent, and fun. There are many funny bits to lighten the story up. The art style involves a lot of shading and screen tones. It is very detailed. This is a great series all around and I definitely recommend it!

Pretty good.

This is a good series. It's about Lili, a high-schooler who solves crimes with the help of a magical ring containing the spirits of the zodiac signs (Virgo, Scorpio, etc.), who give her clues to track down who did the crime, and how.

The art is pretty good, but not what I would call remarkable. The story is mostly meant for younger kids, so a 10-year-old would probably like it a bit more than a teenager. If you're trying to get a friend of yours interested in manga, (or want to find out about manga yourself) this is a good choice for fans of Nancey Drew and Encyclopedia Brown.

A great manga!

I LOVE Zodiac P.I.! It's wonderfully written, with a awesome cast of characters and catchy plot! I've read all 4 of the books so many times that I accidently ripped the spine of the 4th volume...oopps.

~The Characters~
Lili (NOT Lily) Hoshizawa is a 13 yr. old astrologist on a search for her mother,Kaoruko Hoshizawa, who disappeared 2 years ago. In the meantime, she busts mysteries under the alias Spica P.I. and leaves the police, along with her own father, scratching thier heads as to who she is. She solves crimes with 2 things: the birthdate of the victim and the help of 12 zodiac spirits who give her clues and guidance from Lili's summoning of her Star Ring.
Hiromi Oikawa, however,is another story. Good-looking,yes, Hiro is also a detective(much to Mr. Hoshizawa's annoyance) and deals with the mysteries in a logical manner. At times, he's a regular pain in the behind. Hiromi is also allergic to girls, including his own sister, Megumi(whose vainity is VERY annoying..I'd like to do nothing more than kick her and Michelle/Sailor Neptune over a cliff. They're so AIR-HEADED...) I find that very funny.......poor Hiromi!!

Lee Stephens book "August Patriot" is on my book shelf. Brings back good memories and am most proud that Lee gave me this copy after it was published. Had read many pages of the rough manuscript as this story evolved into the final product.

A Southerner, Lee grew up in rural Tennessee. Story telling was a part of living back then.

Lee joined the Navy, became an electricians mate and later got into Underwater Demolition Training (now called UDT/SEAL Training). After successfully completing Training he was assigned to UDT-12 and spent 3 years in the Teams before leaving the Navy and going off to college.
But Lee always remembered his time in the Teams as some of the best and most challanging years of his life.

Lee did well in the business world and ended up with his own consulting firm. But always remembered the Teams, and attended UDT/SEAL Special Warfare functions and reunions whenever possible.

Somewhere in all that he began to write "August Patriot" and the protagonist Stephen Parker was very much like Lee; about 50, executive search consultant, divorced with 2 fine sons. Lee worked out, swam, and was into martial arts. Lean wiry athletic. (Lee later remarried and the delightful female in his book is very much like this wife).

Parker, like Lee, had been a Navy Frogman and always seemed to miss the Teams and the friendships that had developed there. "August Patriot" tells how you sometimes can go back if you just try hard enough.

The book has excitement, international intrigue, 007 like events, history, humor, and some warm romance too. A tale well related by this master story teller.

But a sad note. Lee passed away about this time last year. Consider myself lucky to have known Lee and miss him. His book now becomes even more meaningful to me. (Feel Lee would be more than a little amused to know that his book is now going for $65.00 or more).

Lee was cremated and his ashes committed to the Pacific off Point Loma, CA.
Think Parker would have approved of that.

I consider it a great honor that Steve-O asked me to write a review of his thoughtful and exciting novel, August Patriot. After reading it, I'm convinced that the whole of it is true-only the names have changed.

As a part-time deputy sheriff, ranch hand and retired squid, I remember well the drug war that began in the U.S. during the 1960s. Sadly, during the late 90s, this war has escalated to the point of our country's moral self-destruction.

Our government of the 90's has failed to stop the flow of drugs across our borders on Mexican 18-wheelers and aboard ships bound for Cuba and other Caribbean islands. Why? Steve-O may have come up with the answer.

Master Chief Petty Officer Gary R. Smith (Ret.) RMCM, USN Jacksboro, Texas

Gary Smith is co-author of Death in the Jungle, Death in the Delta, and sole author of Master Chief and co-author of Demo Men. The first three books cover his military career chronologically as an UDT/SEAL/EOD Navy enlisted man from 1964 to 1984.

This is a must-read comedy drama book. If you like funny giants hallucinating little girls then this is the book for you. The main characters are Sophie and the B F G. What happened in the story are good friendships and some scary giant's gross food and a five star adventure. The problem is that they have to capture the nine cannibalistic giants and those nine other giants are fifty feet tall. (The B F G is twenty five feet tall.)
My favorite part of the story is when the B FG eats some eggs for the first time. And the funny, brave and "bobwigling" author Roald Dahl invents funny and creative words. If you're thinking about buying this book, don't think, just buy!

This is a good book for science study. We found it suitable for our research and reference it in our educational WEB site [waterfueledsystems.net].
This book was needed when we launched the "California Methanol Experiment" in 1980. On page 208 it mentions one aspect of "Eventually the CO2 content of the atmosphere itself will be similarly recycled, freeing human kind from its dependence on fossil fuels....".
That is exactly what our new engines do as documented in the new patent we filed on December 4, 2006. There is hope if the politics of oil can be improved. This book varifies the potential of water based fuels.

The extraordinarily wide-ranging review of our major energy sources should be manadtory reading for everybody.

The case is then made for developing (and researching further) the use of methanol as a future energy source. It is compelling.

Why do we not hear politicians and the press screaming for this work to be done?

Creating a practical new source of energy whilst having an impact on CO2 greenhouse gases seems to be a possibility.

Wake up world ! - it's time for a paradigm shift.

This is a masterpiece - a remarkable book at an amazingly low price.

This book is great!

1. The author is highly knowledgeable (He won a Nobel Prize for this work.)
2. Applying these concepts in the marketplace would change the global economy.
3. We intend to buy 10 more copies for distribution to others.

What a legacy this woman of God left before she went home to heaven. Her life was a life of the right priorities. This anointed book will draw many people closer to God as they read the insight she shares. Reading about the testimonies of others who have overcome encourages you in your walk with the Lord Jesus.

Another theme from Holy Scripture that she emphasizes throughout the book is love, i.e., love for God and for other people. In fact, love for God will cause these other matters to fall into place appropriately. The motivation, desire, and focus will naturally flow out of a heart that loves God.

This is an awesome book. Answers some basic question of how God can allow the horrible things to happen here on Earth. How to forgive those who have hurt you. A must read.

This book propelled me to go deeper in my personal walk with God. It was instrumental in my understanding on faith, surrender, forgivenss and love. Since then I have given this book out to many folks struggling in their faith and it has been such a blessing. Though written in 1961 it is as fresh as the day it was written.

This book is so simply written, and views God so simply, that the whole thing really appealed to me. The simple concepts of prayers and how to reach God, as well as how to place God in your life are really easy. The many spiritual stories and accounts are very hard to quit reading. Very excellent! Very easy to read!
