This book gives a brief and highly technical summary of what was known about nuclear fission in 1942 and how to go about turning this knowledge into a "practical weapon". Great fun to read if you have an engineering or physics degree or similar background knowledge. The author has extensively annotated and updated the terse original lecture notes that were given to new arrivals at Los Alamos. Interestingly, the annotations now take up more space that the original notes. These annotations may help to make the subject accessible to a non-technical audience as they provide invaluable historical and technical background. Invaluable for anyone interested in science history and/or the Manhattan Project.

IANAP (I Am Not A Physicist), but the son of one who worked in Los Alamos some time after WWII ... definitely recommend this for those not intimidated by some equations. There's lots here without the match, and the more of it you can appreciate the more the insights. Serber's comments add a lot of perspective.

Excellent book, it takes a bit to stick with it, but the modern day excerpts/perspectives threaded into the book give it a good historical perspective. This is a good combo to go together with Richard Rhodes "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" and "Dark Sun".

- for anyone seriously interested in our nuclear heritage, weaponeering, or the NWEPS program. Gives INCREDIBLE insight as to the minds and directions these young physicists were going.

This book is a must-read. Simple, concise, straightforward technically. You gotta read it, 'nuff said.

Great book on the physics of the bomb
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-15
This is a truly exciting book for people with the desire to understand bomb physics. This book consists out of the original lecture notes from a series of seminars given in 1943 to the bomb scientists at the start of the Manhattan Project. These lecture notes are clearly annotated so that a layman can understand the bomb. Although the book discusses mainly the knowledge of 1943, the clear annotations of the author comments also on the advances since 1943.

In this book you will learn to calculate the energy of an atomic bomb after already 5 pages using only one simple physical law (no, not Einstein!). When you are halfway in the book, you will understand the calculations of the critical mass.

However to fully appreciate the book, you need to have a basic understanding of mathematics and physics. (it would be nice if you know what a differential equation is.)

The book also contains several funny anekdotes which make it a truly astonishing reading.

This book has some details that are not found in other books on the subject. I like the style and content of the Canfield M1903 book better, but this earlier Brophy book on the subject is still very relevant and complimentary to the newer work. Brophy did excellent research on the firearm books he wrote.

Many books have been written about the U.S. M1903 Springfield Rifle, and this one is the very best, bar none. It gets down into the technical and minutiae without becoming a bore, and has enough of life inserted to make it readable. If you need a textbook on the M1903, this is The Book to own. now I have to consider disposing of several books I have purchased, as they are no longer needed>

A Starting Point for the Study of the Springfield '03 Rifle

Review Date: 2007-10-18
The first center-fire rifle I ever shot was a Springfield '03/A3 my Dad got from the Division of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) during the late 1940s. I got my first antelope with that rifle and I still have it.

Dad said that it was a replacement for an older M 1903 he'd sent back to the National Rifle Association in response to an appeal from them for the return of World War I surplus '03 Springfields. Our good friends the British, it seems, were in a spot of trouble after Dunkirk and desperately needed small arms like Dad's. Although we're more German than English, he reluctantly sent it back with the understanding that it would be returned "after the war."

Of course he never got it back which triggered mumbled complaints about "Perfidious Albion", but I found pictures of the same type of rifle and its complete history in this excellent reference book by Colonel Brophy. I also found everything I needed to know about the M 1903/A3 which still enjoys a place of honor here and still goes out with me from time to time.

Brophy's book is the starting point for the study of the Springfield '03 rifle. You simply cannot find a better, more accurate, more comprehensive book about '03 Springfields. If you have such a rifle, or are interested in them, you will need this book.

I gave it five stars because it is well illustrated, exhaustively researched and the best single book on the '03 Springfield you will ever see. This is also the kind of book that tends to cost an arm and a leg once supplies of it have dried up. Collectors like me pass them down to their sons along witht the rifles they describe so well.

The book is really great, with a lot of work evidently put in on it. I would consider it a must for any serious collector's library. However, be forewarned, all of the photos are in black and white, and some are too dark to reveal the detail you would like to see for identification purposes. Having that been said, I still would want it as a part of my reference library, if not, but for the devotion that Lt. Col. Brophy put into it.

I'm a firm believer that you can never have too many reference works in your field of interest. I bought this book as I had very little information on the Springfield rifles. This is one of the most comprehensive single subject books that I've come across and I'm very happy to have it on my shelves. It gives a very full rundown on the history of the rifle, all the various versions, the accessories and users. Its lavishly illustrated, well written, well laid out and it comes in a proper binding that makes it a pleasure to use.

I can't speak too highly about this volume and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in military firearms.

Through the eyes of this avid reader, a 4th grade teacher and a camp director for middle school age students for over 20 years, I can confidently say that not only will adults enjoy this book, but so will teens. Too often the subject of death/loss and teen angst is ignored or introduced at the end of stories (ie Bridge to Terabithia, Where the Red Fern Grows, etc.). Here is a refreshing book that deals with these issues from the first chapter. There is enough baseball, mystery and friendship issues/adventures to capture even a teen boys attention. Fellow teachers: this story has great potential for some in depth (middle/high school) classroom discussions and writings in areas such as; loss, bullying and love (romantic/family/friends). On top of all of this, a mysterious character and ending to challenge/engage even an adult's discussion group. I highly recommend this book.

Over a ten day period during the summer of 1955, fourteen-year-old James Sayer learns a lot about friendship, racism, family, death, and how forgiveness always comes at a price.

It's been over a year since James's younger brother, Brand, died. Brand suffered from a rare blood disease, and everyone knew that he probably wouldn't grow into adulthood. But Brand didn't die from his disease, at least not directly, and although no one else seems to blame James for his brother's passing, he certainly blames himself. His beloved brother's death has left a hole in his heart, and he's not the same happy-go-lucky teen that he once was. He no longer has any interest in baseball, which was an activity that he and his brother shared together. Drawing, another shared interest, has been pushed by the wayside, abandoned.

Until James gets a job working at the fair for the summer alongside his friend Costello, serving ice cream at Mr. Curren's stand. Along with their other friends, G-Man and Fizz, James hopes to spend the summer working hard, avoiding the baseball games that he'll inevitably be asked to join, and staying out of trouble.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work out as well as he'd planned.

First, there are girls. Namely, a girl named Paige, who he can't seem to get enough of, even though she irritates him constantly. Then there's G-Man and the girl he loves, Marie, which causes tons of trouble since G-Man is black and Maria is white. Then there's the group of bullies in town, led by Black-Eye, who likes to make trouble anywhere he can find it.

Slowly, though, James finds these strange days of summer changing everything he knows about life and love, of tolerance and diversity, and of blame and forgiveness. For James, these ten days during 1955 might just be the turning point that he's been waiting for.

Author Jonathan Zemsky has penned an emotional story that will take you back to the past, when tensions ran high and going to the fair was the highlight of any young boy's summer. With the sounds of baseball all around you and the smell of the fairgrounds drifting in the air, BEYOND THE SHADOWS OF SUMMER is a sweet, sentimental read that you're guaranteed to enjoy.

When you read the brief description of "Beyond the Shadows Of Summer", you might mistakenly think that this is a story for adolescents or teens, but you'd be wrong. This is a book for men and women, boys and girls of all ages. Whether you're a teenager that can relate to the book or an adult that has this book conjure up memories, it is for everyone.

This is a story about first love, the tragic loss of a loved one, and the life altering experiences that you can go through due to both experiences.

The book, at 188 pages, is a quick read and after the first few pages, you'll be surprised at how quickly you get to page 188.

Having a teenaged son, I'm a few years removed from a lot of the experiences that the main character, James goes through...but thanks to the fine writing of Mr. Zemsky, I felt as if most of these experiences happened only yesterday.

The only negative I can think of, is that the book had to end.

paul howes is the ULTIMATE springfield fan. he hasn't spent hours listening to every syllable springfield ever sang. he has spent his life. and then some. because more than a few of the recordings he disseminates were not released to the public or are parts of tv specials springfield made during 40+ year career.

and his love for dusty and her unique, one of a kind voice is captured in page after page of this healthy tome that devotes itself to her recordings.

even when he doesn't like the performance or the arrangement, he still maintains impartiality and great respect for a woman that was loved, idolized, almost forgotten then reclaimed by her new and old fans from all over the world.

and this book is a perfect reading companion for when you are enjoying one of springfield's wonderful interpretations of a song she made her own.

and the beauty of that--there's more than a few.

Here's what we Dusty fans waited many years for. Several more compilation CD's and a couple more DVD's have been released in the U.S., U.K., Australia and the rest of the world since this comprehensive overview of Dusty's career was published in 2001, so the book is only complete up to that point. No matter, because these pages cover all of the known, individual studio recordings she made, including several alternate versions, album session outtakes and single mixes that have turned up over the years on various collections. There are many live television and radio recordings floating around out there, many of which have yet to see CD or DVD release, but this book is as complete a volume as we could have reasonably hoped for. And the pictures! There are many photos here I had never seen before, making this book even more of a special treat. The casual listener who is only familiar with Springfield for the four or five songs that get endlessly recycled on the radio could probably not care less about this book, but for us rabid fans, this is indispensable. Highly recommended, and nothing in here to disrespect the woman whose real legacy is a catalog of great music, NOT a string of sleazy tabloid stories. Avoid DANCING WITH THE DEMONS, a badly written "biography" which I won't even dignify with a negative review.

Dusty Springfield was a legend in the music industry. She was tough and a perfectionist without apologies. This book is about her music legacy and not about her personal problems with addiction or her sexual orientation. There's more to her person than who or what she sleeps with. Dusty was one of a kind. She died too soon at 59 just when she got awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) on her deathed and died two weeks before her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. Sadly, there is one honor that I think she should receive and that is the Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for recording. If I only had $25,000 dollars to spare, I would do it for Dusty.

There's nothing else Eddie Gresham has to do to be a famous writer except write more books.

Footfalls had me from the first chapter and would not let me go. The characters were so detailed that I felt like I was in their day-to-day lives. And just like horror fiction should be, it played on the simple fears we all have without resorting to gore.

I know some day I'll be in a book discussion and someone in the group will mention Eddie Gresham's name. I'll tell them I have a signed copy of his first book and no one will believe me.

I love when a book is able to put you in a certain mood. I think that is a sign of great story telling. With this novel, I had a sense of dread almost from the start of the book. I liked the character immediately and wanted good things to happen for him but at the same time, I wanted to warn him about the terror that waits for him.

A very good thriller that captures real life very well. In fact my favorite part of the book was the romantic subplot. The story was fast paced but never rushed. It's a great book to enjoy on vacation. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next from this promising writer.

A brilliant horror tale, in the perfect set

Footfalls is everything that you want in a horror story, pitting an honest and likable cast of characters against a mysterious (and seriously creepy) nemesis. Gresham's brilliant attention to detail in the portrayal of everyday life -- such as how a dog acts as his owner returns home, the way someone kicks off their boots, or a co-workers love for odd-tasting pizza -- adds considerable depth to the story, and I was pleased to see that the book maintained this quality through to the end. The author paints a vivid and highly immersive setting that drew me in from the beginning, putting me in the middle of a picture-perfect midwest town.

Footfalls is eerie, chilling, and haunting, but not overly graphic or terrifying; replacing gore with clever hints of danger and the type of steadily-growing tension that puts you on the edge of your seat. It is easy to read, and the short chapters make it easy to put down and pick up -- although I rarely put it down, devouring the entire story over a weekend. Footsteps is well written, well crafted, completely enjoyable, and highly recommended.

Horror is not my normal genre to read, but this book gave the fun of a horror book (suspense) without unwanted gore. The writing style is engaging and short chapters keep you wanting to read just a few more pages....until you realize you've read many more pages. The characters are well-developed, so you easily develop a relationship with them. The 1970's flashback sections brought back to mind many childhood memories. This book is a fun, quick read.

I was given this book years ago as a gift when moving away from IL. I have well over 40 cookbooks in my collection. This one is, by far, my favorite. All recipes are easy to prepare and each one has been a hit in our home. I LOVE this cookbook. In the past, I have purchased cookbooks by favorite cooks, only to be disappointed to find many recipes are out of the ordinary fare, which have gone over like a lead balloon with my children. I have yet to prepare something from this book, which my children won't eat. It is a true representation of midwestern favorite foods. The potato soup recipe is a favorite at out house.

I recently enrolled in Law School and discovered How 2 Study Law and bought it right away. I read it cover to cover in about an hour. I was really happy to see such an organized, easy-to-read approach to an overwhelming task. I particularly appreciated the thoughts on how to improve one's concentration and getting the definitions memorized methodology.
The authors have chosen a style, format and content that encourages the student to endure the process with a very sensible approach that respectfully doesn't take a lot of time to incorporate into an already demanding schedule.
I just really want everyone to know when an author hits the mark with new students, as there is such a plethora of information for students to buy products which they may not need or use. My thanks for such sage and sound advice and I look forward to seeing Mr. Springfield's future presentations.

This is a profound book focusing on the presidential funeral journey for Abraham Lincoln. It is beautifully done, well illustrated, excellent maps, with photos and a marvelous and captivating story line that follows through. Eash chapter seems to surround the events at the stop for that day. It gets down to the trackside level of the ordinary person and really brings out the common man's response to the president's death. This ought to be required reading for every presidental and history scholar. It definitely should be in every public and school library. Destined to be a classic! A keeper in my library!!!! I hope this author writes more books of this quality. If you don't read another history book, read this one.

This is an extraordinary accounting of the journey of Lincoln's funeral train and how America responded. From start to finish this is a detailed book with maps, photos and text following closely. Just not another dry book about the life of Abraham Lincoln. The author takes you there, through the big state memorials to the little trackside memorials and brief stops. The reader only need close his eyes to hear the train, the hymns and other demonstrations of sorrow. It is not hard to imagine the endless miles of mourners, the expressions of sorrow shown by a merciful and humble nation. Truly, this book demonstrates the extraordinary national observances of Lincoln and the first national funeral for a fallen president. A very impressive book and worthy of every library. The book is well assembled with color dust jacket and solid case. Worth every penny.
