I thought this book was wonderful because I know all the places and some of the characters. My great-grandfather is even in it. Our house used to sit on the foundation of the church that it refers to, which is also where my grandparents met. So, this book held a lot of meaning for me!! I can't wait to read the sequel.

I enjoyed Turn Back Time very much because the characters just came to life for me. There was a mixture of sorrow, joy, and romance in it, but the best part was that it was a good, clean book with no four-letter words.

What great story telling. Couldn't put it down. The characters were so earthy. I passed this book around my family, who are from Kentucky, and everyone enjoyed it. Brings back so many memories. Great to the last page!

There are very few books that draw you right in from the first page but this book does. You love the family, the conflicts, the way it is solved and above all their love for God that shines through. Beware it is one of those books that will keep you up to the wee hours of the morning "just to find out what happens next"!

WOW! Where's Book # 2?

This is definitely one of those books that you don't lay down until you read the last word. It goes everywhere with you and your family wants you to hurry up and finish so they can have you back! It was a book that had me hooked from the beginning. It reminded me of the old mining stories my family use to reminisce about. The detailed info about the mining terminology was very interesting. Do you remember the Little House on the Prairie shows? It made me think of that time period. The characters in the book were so realistic and believable. When I read books like this with so much detail, they make me feel a part of the script. They also make me regret getting to the last page. This book was great and once I finished reading it, it was on my mind for days. It's nice to be able to find enjoyment and comfort in a book like this when you need an escape from the everyday happenings of the world. Grab this book and escape for a few hours! Very enjoyable, where's #2!?! Keep up the fantastic work Lisa and Dale! I love Dale's childrens books, they are great, too.

Still The Best Christian Tract Ever (that I've read)

Why Grace Changes Everything
A great Christian theology tract as it gives a succinct summary of why the Protestant Reformation occurred and a nice overview of Protestant theology and the doctrine of divine grace. I read this in college, but not having any background in Christianity at that time, I did not understand it. So I do not recommend this book as a witnessing tool to give to your non-Christian friends; I linked what I consider an easier to understand book by my favorite preacher of God's grace, Chuck Smith, to give to nonbelievers. However, once you understand the basics of your faith, this is a great pamphlet to help keep you anchored in grace and from straying into legalism. It also gives you a basic understanding of Martin Luther's teaching. With so many odd strands of Christian teaching emerging the past few decades, I highly recommend anchoring yourself in the theology of this amazing man of God, so as not to be pushed about by "every wave of doctrine". I try to keep it handy to refer to.

Keeping this review short and sweet, like the tract. For more, I'd read the other reviews on this tract.

Not being Lutheran, I welcome the opportunity to study the man who came in third place in the "Person of the Millennium" poll.

This slim book contains his discourse on "Christian Liberty," that is, the relationship to faith and works. All the hearsay finally dies with this book, since you hear Luther's own words on the matter.

He asserts that Christian Liberty is paradoxical, that the Christian is a perfectly free lord to all, but also a perfectly dutiful servant, subject to all. This paradox comes because of man dual nature: spirit and element. His main point is that by the Atonement, we all become free, but because of the atonement, we have an obligation to serve other people in chaity.

I like this edition. The translation is actually a translation, and Mr. Grimm block the text into paragraphs for easier reading. Moreover, he provides the scriptural references that Luther merely alludes to. Thus, the book becomes lecture notes for our review and pondering.

The cover illustration is eye-catching. It shows Luther taking his stand before some potentate. It reflects the energy that you feel in the words, the drive that empowered a man to shake all of Europe. It shows the energy that drove this man to liberty.

The Fire and Hammer of the Word of God (Jeremiah 23:29)

Martin Luther's treatise "Christian Liberty" (or "The Freedom of a Christian") is perhaps the most powerful and concise presentation of the Christian life ever written. I cannot recommend this work highly enough. I rank this among the very best of Luther's works (and that is really saying something). If an inexpensive copy were still in publication I would buy every copy to give as gifts to friends and family. The power, discernment, brevity and readability of this work make a true gem among Reformation writings (and Christian writings in general). Here you will find the essence of the spirit of the Reformation distilled into a guide for practical, biblical living.

With the clarity and bold authority of a true prophet, Luther sets forth the whole of the Christian life in two theses: "A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all." We are free from sin and the law (subject to none) but slaves to Christ in love (subject to all). As Paul writes in Romans 6:22, "But now...you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God."

Luther writes as a shepherd of the common people and the tone and content differ greatly from his better-known debate-oriented works (ie. Bondage of the Will, 95 Theses). The doctrine of justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone is the heart and soul of Luther's message, founded upon a firm conviction in the authority of scripture alone.

He writes, "One thing, and only one thing, is necessary for Christian life, righteousness, and freedom. That one thing is the most holy Word of God, the gospel of Christ."

And again, "It ought to be the first concern of every Christian to lay aside all confidence in works and increasingly to strengthen faith alone and through faith to grow in the knowledge, not of works, but of Christ Jesus, who suffered and rose for him.... No other work makes a Christian.... 'This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent' (John 6:29)."

And regarding our service to God, "...In this way the stronger member may serve the weaker, and we may be sons of God, each caring for and working for the other, bearing one another's burdens and so fulfilling the law of Christ. This is a truly Christian life. Here faith is truly active through love. That is, it finds expression in works of the freest service, cheerfully and lovingly done, with which a man willingly serves another without hope of reward; and for himself he is satisfied with the fullness and wealth of his faith."

This volume is currently out-of-print, but this treatise has been published in a number of other individual volumes and in at least one very worthy compilation entitled "Martin Luther's Basic Theological Writings" (ed. Timothy F. Lull, 1989) which also contains a number of other infinitely worthy works such as Luther's "Small Catechism," the stirring "Meditation of Christ's Passion," and the thesis chapters of the foundational "Bondage of the Will." I cannot vouch for any other volume than this one and the one detailed above, but any version of this monumental treatise is bound to bless you. It is the fire and the hammer of the Word of God to consume the adversaries and break apart the stone hearts of impenitant men.

A Must Read for all Preachers

Even though this book was written in 1958, it is one of the best books on preaching ever written. It is both a systematic and philosophical approach to the design of biblical expository preaching. H. Grady Davis does a masterful job of exposing the faults of modern preaching while at the same time expounding on the necessity of solid expository design and formation of biblical sermons. I have not read any book since that has improved on Davis' work. His approach is for the evangelical preacher who wants to communicate God's Word as God's Word. This book is invaulable for the seminary student as well as the experienced preacher. Reading and applying this book to your own personal study habits will benefit the reader greatly. Read this book, you will not be disappointed.

Wisdom for Preaching

Welcome to the Wittgenstein of homiletics: H. Grady Davis. Many books on preaching provide only rules for fitting together the various pieces of preaching. Instead of this, Davis shows us the picture on the front of the puzzle box so that we can see what real preaching is. Davis is not concerned with specific rules for preaching, but rather with developing the preachers sense of form. His central idea is that substance and form are inseperable. An idea, he writes, is like a tree with branches reaching up towards the light. Davis walks the reader through finding ideas (trunks) to discovering how they develop (branches). I would recommend this book to anyone who feels the burden to preach the Word.

planetary positions and human life

This is a well-documented comparison between historical events of 1942 and 1988 and planetary positions corresponding to those dates, which seems to be beyond coincidence. Such relationship led to a heuristic theory that the continuing multitudinous alignments and geometric configurations continually formed as the planets and Earth revolve about the sun interfere with the interplanetary electromagnetic field surrounding the earth in a cyclical fashion, albeit appearing to be random. The theory was derived from considerations of Tesla, Velikovsky, and another article relating interruptions of radio communications to planetary positions.

This is a very fine Lutheran exposition of Galatians. Ragnar Bring evens out some of the antinomian sounding passages found in Luther's great 1535 Commentary on Galatians. I read Bring's commentary alongside Luther's and several other modern conservative commmentaries on Galatians for a Bible class and found this one to be the best for its doctrinal approach. Non-Lutherans, however, will not find Bring to be a suffocatingly doctrinaire type and will be able to benefit from his labors.

(from the back cover of the book) First delivered from the pulpit, these sermons were so popular that extra services were held on Saturday to handle the overflow crowds. "I have rarely read anything this penetrating and profound yet put with such simplicity and naturalness... As immediate as the last conversation you had with your closest friend, as exciting as it always is to discover how much of the known is unknown, and to explore it. We are under an increasing debt to the author and his translator." -- Paul Scherer, Princeton Theological Seminary

I bought this book because I am a descendent of the Muhlenberg family... However, I never expected to enjoy it... This well written history is the first time I have been so close to the experience of the American Revolution since "Johnny Tremain". The struggles you just don't consider as a 21st century resident are strongly represented. Henry Melchoir Muhlenberg left his well-educated world in Germany to deal with an unstable and often unfriendly new world in Pennsylvania. He struggled to create the Lutheran church in America while raising his family and caring for a wife who suffered from seizures. His children went on to be extremely important men in history. Wonderful and important history which includes many notable figures (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Benedict Arnold, Alexander Hamilton, etc.).

Dr. Hageman, for nearly three decades pastor of North Reformed Church in Newark, NJ, then President of New Brunswick Seminary was one of the great preachers of the secodn half of the twentieth century. This book is a collection of Lenten sermons preached by Dr. Hageman. Any pastor with this book on her or his shelf will be turning to it again and again for the faithful, lively, insightful and inspiring rich vein or sermonic material for preaching the seven last words of Christ. Dr. Hageman taught that sermons convey the love of our graceful God and the purpose of the pulpit was the glory of God in Jesus Christ.

Vintage autographed Martin Luther from the 1500s, dated 1950s so it would never date. So, they blame their race. Europe is a third world country. It's worse than Africa. Because they're poor. I could do on and on about what a rich man's ghetto Budapest/Bucharest/Superior/Cairo was, not any more. I ain't got money. I gave them like $10,000 and got some free literature in return. I'm a backup priest, congregation member. And my advice to you is this- sign up for Welfare. THat's good money now, more and more stubborn working class are taking pay cuts. Sure you need a public library, but school? Education is free in Africa, time for Europe to follow suit. Europe is worse than Africa. It's global. Amen, bless you now and forver.
