Love/Hate those Squirrels!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-27
A fun book! To battle a squirrel who eats all his birdseed, my 6-year old daughter thought the Professor's inventions were "cool". The repetitive text is great for beginning readers, and the pictures are bright and funny.

Best of all, I think this book can be a fun gift for anyone who has ever had a battle with squirrels, regardless of age!

Soft, kindly illustrations enhance this lovely picture book

Review Date: 2001-08-17
Grandma Tells A Story is a gentle story that addresses itself from the grandparents to the grandchild, who is presumed to be the reader. "Once upon a time, before you were born, Grandpa and I were very lonely," begins the book, which proceeds to recount the excitement and anticipation leading up to the birth of their first grandchild - and so, the end of the story is really just the beginning. Soft, kindly illustrations enhance this lovely picture book, which makes an ideal gift for the young grandchild just learning to read.

A favorite bedtime story

This is a great book that helps children make sense of the sometimes frightful noises of the night and how they are made by things that really dont scare us at all. Its black and white illustrations are in tone with the theme of the book. My daughter has learned in a fun way that eventhough we sleep a lot of other living beings are up and are making noises that go along with their daily activities.

A wonderfully original story

Review Date: 2003-02-16
Bella is a witch who dreams of big castles, silk gowns, and the jewels associated with princesses. But when the Grand Wizard has forbidden any witch to turn themselves into a princess, Bella's dreams are dashed. But clever Bella has another plan that might work -- marry a prince! And with a little online dating help that's exactly what Bella sets out to do. Lois G. Grambling's wonderfully original story is very nicely illustrated by Judy Love. The Witch Who Wanted To Be A Princess is spellbinding, hugely funny, and enthusiastically recommended reading for children preschool through fourth grade.

A loving depiction of a daddy and his little girl
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-13
My six year-old is a Daddy's Girl and this book, even though she has had it for a long time, is one of her very favorites. It is very reassuring to her, especially with its comforting refrain ("I know Daddy will be there"). No, it is not a sing-songy all-is-well book, but neither is it particularly gloomy--it is more a testament to the quiet love of fathers and daughters.

(My child has never asked where the mother is, incidentally)

Relates the importance of a childs confidence.

This book shows the confidence a child should have that a parent will always be available to them. This will keep the attention of young children and be easy to read by young students. I highly recommend this excellent family oriented book for students K-2 and parents.

Comforting, but with a sense of melancholy
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-08
I read this with my 3-year-old some months after her mother filed for divorce (her mother has primary custody). We re-read it 12 times that day, only giving up because Daddy was worn out! It seemed to give my daughter comfort to be reassured that Daddies are always there. However, I do agree with Kirkus Reviews that it is a melancholy book -- the mother is not referred to in this book -- she's probably dead -- and the outdoor illustrations are as lonely as a Wyeth painting.

Still, the book seems to acknowledge that not every moment in childhood is deleriously happy and fulfilling, while still giving reassurance of the strength of a father's love. The simple language is easily understood, and the illustrations are skillfully done. It is not a happy book, but a reassuring one, and we like it in my household!

Dads Are There More Than Before
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-29
This is a wonderful book for Dads and their daughters to read. I am somewhat perplexed by the criticism that "mom is nowhere to be found." In a growing number of instances Dad's are in fact left -- or seize -- the role of primary parent. Most books are mommy-centric and no one has a cow. Should Daddy-centric books be treated any different? When mom leaves children naturally fear Dad will someday leave too. This book certainly comforts daughters who worry if Daddy will be there and reminds Fathers how important it is that we are. Well done!

My son received this book for his fourth birthday. (His 4th birthday was dinosaur themed, too.) He really enjoys the story, but not so much the illustrations. The illustrations aren't stegosaurus-ee enough for him.

My elementary students LOVE IT!

I teach preschool (ages 3 -6). Everytime I read this book to the group at circle time, I always get a great response. They really enjoy this book(probably the older ones more so than the younger ones). I think it has to do with the way it is read aloud. I get into it, especially the "Can I have a stegosaurus Mom? Can I please? If I had a stegosaurus Mom..." Overall we all seem to like it.

My three little guys LOVE this story!

Our 4 and 1/2 year old twin boys and their 3 year old little brother love this story! They can really relate to the whinning little boy and the way he tries to justify owning a stegosaurus. His ingenuity and perserverance are quite admirable. My boys love the suprise ending! This is a great story to read out loud as long as you can pronounce the names of all the dinosaurs correctly! If not, the children will be sure to correct you!

My 2 year old son loves this book![.]

His Nanna got it for him for Christmas last year and it is probably the most read book we have. It makes him laugh and laugh, but you have to be sure and use funny voices![.] As far as the yucky vegetables part goes, just don't read yucky, we change it to nummy!! This is a great book that I plan on giving as gifts this year!...

Delightful Fantasy

Review Date: 2003-03-08
Can I Have a Tyrannosaurus Rex, Dad picks up the wonderful story begun in Can I Have a Stegosaurus, Mom. In this new adventure, the little boy imagines how great life would be if he only had a T-Rex as a pet. One of our family's favorites and highly recommended.

falls well short of expectations
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-12
My daughter and I love the first so we were expecting more of the same. Unfortunately, this falls quite a bit short of expectations. The illustrations aren't up to the level of "Mom, can I ..." and the text seems somewhat forced and doesn't flow as well as the first. The ending leaves an opening for a sequel although, personally, I wish I had stopped after "Mom, can I have a Stegasorus".

A fun book for both parent and child

My son absolutely loves this book and I have fun reading it to him. If you liked "Can I have a Stegosaurus?" you will love this new book. It is the perfect book for dinosaur lovers. The illustrations are great too. I highly recommend this book for children aged 3+.
