Written by a practicing landscape architect and scholar of East Asian and European garden history, The Japanese Garden: Gateway To The Human Spirit is a beautiful tour of spiritual gardens in Japanese temple precincts. Covering gardens connected to Shinto, Buddhist, and Confucianist traditions, The Japanese Garden offers black-and-white photographs, diagrams of garden layouts, and in-depth discussion of how each garden incorporated the spiritual traditions connected to its cultivation. An excellent orientation to the view, function, and flow of traditional Japanese gardens, whether they were designed to be walked in or simply observed, The Japanese Garden is a superb source of both reference and inspiration for garden designers of all skill and experience levels.

This book teaches me java at the first time. The content of this book is very good for a beginner level. It might not cover Java all in details, but this is more than enough for the beginner to learn. The java code samples are simple and easy to understand. I suggest to to read slowly and carefully.

I really recommend this book for beginners. The authors of this book explains from "what is variable?" to OOP concept. Highly recommended!!!

An excellent compilation of Calhoun's constitutional and political writings...
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-06
~John C. Calhoun: Selected Writings and Speeches~ is an anthology of writings of the antebellum South Carolina statesmen. It's perhaps the definitive abridged compilation of Calhoun's writings. The alternative of course is the broad collection by historian Clyde Wilson, entitled The Papers of John C. Calhoun. However, as a practical matter, sorting through the cream of the crop is an exercise that takes a lot of work. Dr. Cheek, however, has sorted through Calhoun's writings, and put together a most remarkable collection of Calhoun's writings. Besides, the Disquisition and the Discourse, he features good pieces such as Calhoun's Exposition and Protest, his Speech on the Force Bill, and his letter to James Hamilton describing the nature of the Union, among several other selections.

Calhoun's Disquisition and Discourse are profoundly reflective political thought that typify what historians characterize as the South Atlantic Republicanism. Calhoun's concept of concurrent majorities and his understanding of the American federal system are deeply reflective. Undoubtedly, if we are to ever initiate a meaningful renaissance of federalism and implement needed constitutional reforms within the United States, such a move necessitates the revival of the statesmanship of John Calhoun. So, Dr. Cheek's books are a good place to start.

All things considered, if you're interested in antebellum politics, political science, or exploring the statesmanship of South Carolina statesmen John C. Cahoun, then Cheek's anthology is definitely worth your consideration. Please consider reading this book in tandem with his other book Calhoun and Popular Rule, which offers sound exegesis of the Disquisition and Discourse.

All of the books in this series are 6 inches square, 8-12 pages long, use mostly CVC words, and contain a cartoon illustration with a short text on each page.

My Korean English students love taking turns reading these books.

At the time I am writing this, all of the books except #6 and #7 are available for 1 cent:

1. Dad and Sam (188794267X)
2. Ann's Hat (1887942688)
3. Sam and the Mitt (1887942696)
4. Pom Pom (188794270X)
5. The Big Log (1887942718)
6. Mutt and Pup (B000APFN2K), 45 cents
7. Pig Fun (B000APL6CG), 47 cents
8. Ann's Big Muffin (1887942742)
9. Tim the Truck (1887942750)
10. Kim Kangaroo (1887942769)

This series is a supplement of another series, entitled the Hop Book series.
There are more lines of text on each page than in the Hop Book series.

I would like this series better if each book were confined to rhyming (bat, cat, rat) or alliterating (can, fan, man) words. Such a series would comply with Piaget's finding that younger children can focus on only one variable at a time.

If you find such a series, please write back.

These two volumes are a gem! Kenneth Kingsbury not only gives you comprehensive history on the family but also on the history of the locations they are from. Loaded with plenty of photos and fascinating historical tidbits. He also has been a pioneer in the use of DNA to research the family tree. This has given the Kingsbury family a wealth of ancestral knowledge that wouldn't otherwise be known had he not pursued this avenue of research. I own a number of family tree books and these are by far the most delightful, informative and comprehensive of them all. A must have for anyone in the Kingsbury line!!!

Northern Virginia History

Review Date: 2007-12-21
Copies of the original edition of this book, published in 1924, and the first reprint, published in 1964, have now disappeared from view, carefully guarded in public and private libraries. The difficulty in obtaining this invaluable reference has long frustrated the many readers who want to learn more about Old Prince William County. This edition was sponsored by the county's Historical Commission in 1987.

Author Fairfax Harrison was born in New York City in 1869, but he was a Virginian by ancestry of many generations. (His father was secretary to Jefferson Davis during the Civil War; his mother was a descendant of the Fairfax family.) A lawyer and railroad executive, he found time to research family and Northern Neck history, and publish more than sixty books on those subjects. He retired to Fauquier County, where he lived on the family estate "Belvoir," named after the original Fairfax seat and located in what was once part of Prince William County.
Old Prince William County comprised what is now all or part of the Virginia counties of Prince William, Fairfax, Loudoun, Fauquier and Arlington; and the city of Alexandria.

724 pages, with index. The back pocket part holds a fold-out map of the county.

THIS IS THE FIFTH OF THE SERIES. I HAVE ENJOYED THEM ALL. THESE ARE NOT FOR THE STUFFY WORSHIPER OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. NOT PASTICHES OR PARODIES OF ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE, TROW'S "LESTRADE"MYSTERIES STAND ON THEIR OWN AS WORKS OF THE MYSTERY WRITER'S ART, COMBINED WITH GREAT HUMOUR, PUNS AND "DOUBLE ENTENDRES." ONE OF THOSE BOOKS THAT MAKE YOU FEEL SAD WHEN IT IS FINISHED. LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE!

Murder is afoot among the footmen of the Royal Household. When one of the serving girls in the royal household is found murdered, the investigation of her death thrusts Sholto Lestrade into the hunt for a killer. Disguised as a schoolmaster, he follows a killer's path from castles to curbside. Traveling across England, Lestrade's investigation takes him from Balmoral Castle to Glamis Castle to the North British Hotel where he once again barely escapes death.

On his official ninth case in "Lestrade And The Gift of the Prince," mystery writer MJ. Trow presents his hero, Inspector Sholto Lestrade, as being hungry for respect. Having lived in the fictional shadows of ace detective Sherlock Holmes for decades, our man Lestrade rises to become an intelligent protagonist while Holmes is portrayed as a bumbling, inept fool.

M.J. Trow's Lestrade series are packed with sharp historical detail, delightful humor, and witty word-play. Sure to raise a few eyebrows, Fans of Sherlock Holmes might balk at the fun poked at their man, but Baker Street Irregulars who have kept a sense of humor will relish this story.
