While not as ambitious as her work in "Toothpaste: From Start to Finish" this book is written in a way that could inspire kids to read. In fact, this may be a great book for some but, the fact that I cannot stomach three continous seconds of anything that has to do with Rosie O'donnell pretty much makes this a no-go for me. I may not like this book, but that doesn't mean your or your child will not. I think book is as good or better than the following titles that you may or may not have read... "Home Surgery:Do-it-Yourself Savings on Costly Operations at Home" "Kids Are Punny : Jokes About Rosie Sent by Kids to the Rosie O'Donnell Show" "The Great Polish Philosophers" "Idiots Guide: Internet Chain Letters" "Idiots Guide: to Dummy Books"

The Definitive ATSF History, Vol. 1

Review Date: 2000-04-05
This is volume 1 of a three volume set telling the story of the Santa Fe Railway as written by Santa Fe railfan and historian Donald Duke. Although the book is illustrated with 474 photos and illustrations, it is not a coffee table photo book but a history book telling the story of the Santa Fe from Chicago to Los Angeles and down the coast to San Diego. The major portion of the book deals with the Santa Fe in California with photos and details of otherwise obscure stations along the way. Photos range from 1880 to 1980, but photos from the 40s and 50s dominate. This book is a "must have" for the Santa Fe railfan.

This is an excellant book for serious fans of the Santa Fe Railroad. The book has a large number of pictures, but don't be fooled into thinking that this is another "coffee table" picture book. There is a great deal of well-researched textual information contained between the covers. Think Lucius Beebe or Don Ball and you'll have a good idea of the quality of both the pictures and the text. There are a great number of black and white photos of early Santa Fe equipment, towns, and territory; including many not found in other works. This is an expensive book, but very well worth the price of admission.

Excellent Health Resource!

This book, written by a dentist, discusses an important, little known subject: the connection of the health of the mouth to the entire body. If the mouth is not properly maintained, it's difficult to maintain total health and well being. I know this to be true because I suffered from gum disease. Once I discovered (thanks to my dentist) that I had gum issues, other health problems cleared up as well. After reading this book, I was astonished at the many health problems that stem from improper dental care.
This oustanding book is nothing to sneeze at. The author provides helpful anecdotes, useful information on products to purchase as well as excellent suggestions backed up by research. It's mostly written in a conversational manner, making it easy to read and understand. It offers a wealth of information. I greatly appreciate books written by professionals who encourage patients to explore alternative, less invasive means of treatment. This is just such a book.

Excellent Book!

As a family physician, we get very little, if any, training and information on oral health. We definitely don't get training on how oral health can affect the entire body. Dr. Flora Stay's book is an excellent resource for me in treating my patients. Now I take a closer look at my patients oral health and I realized that those patients with many health problems, also have poor dental hygiene and health. This book has given me the knowledge to inform my patients of proper dental treatment that will ultimately improve their overall health. I recommend this book to all of my patients. This is a great resource not only for physicians, but the general public as well. It is very easy to read and understand for everyone. We can all improve our overall health just by reading this book and making the changes that Dr. Stay recommends.

In 70's I had the book Master Game by the same author. I found it again in the 90`s. This book by the same author (DeRopp) is the essence of his thinking & teaching in older age. It covers Gurdjieff, Ouspensky, Sufi teachins,Zen sittings in a very easy to understand way. It also gives a clear explanation of what went wrong with the development of the modern Man. There are hundreds of books for the "seekers". If you are serious about the "WORK" and Fourth Way, do yourself a favor: Read this book a couple of times.

Not only for so-called Gurdjieff-Work people, but for anybody honestly "trying" to work on themselves. This book is what Gurdjieff would call "Castor Oil" to our Egos, if we make the effort to really read it. The "Mastergame" was quite nice, and
probably a revelation it its days, but "Self-Completion" is a Masterpiece, quite rare in this time of narrowness. De Ropp is stirring muddy waters and shows, how to bring clarity into the mud. A very rare kind of book. Very very valuable!!!

Vacation Planning Guide and Excellent Traveling Companion

The Sierra Nevada attract visitors from around the U.S. and from all over the world. They come to see the Giant Sequoias. They hike the John Muir, Pacific Crest and countless other trails. They fish, camp, hunt, ski, sightsee and just plain relax. My wife introducted me to the Sierra eight years ago. We usually returned to Eastern Sierra and particularly Lake Sabina. Recently, another camper told me about an Internet site called SierraGatewayMap.com. I checked it out and I am thrilled with it! It gives excellent descriptions, pictures and maps of 11 counties of the Sierra Nevada. I can immediately contact resort owners or pack station guides and other merchants directly through the Internet right from this web site. My wife and I used it to plan a trip to the Western Sierra area of Mammoth Pools. I have never been to this side of the mountains. We printed some maps of the area from the web site. Then I discovered there was a travel companion book, The Sierra Gateway Map Guide. This book is based on the web site, yet I can carry it with me as I travel the area. Sometimes the local folks of the area you are visiting don't want to tell you about the surrounding places you can see because they want you to stay and spend all their money with them! This book shows you what is nearby. You can stay in one spot and take daily side trips to many other closeby places. I am obviously pleased with this book and highly recommend it. It is not only good for using yourself, but it is a great gift item as well. My thanks to the authors for both the web site and the excellent travel guide!

Fantastic Guide to the Sierra Nevada Backroads

Having visited the Sierra Nevada since the 1950s, I am pleased to have found this wonderful booklet that is filled with color pictures and detailed maps. My family and I can show others where we have visited and we can decide what other areas we will like to visit in the future. I particularly like the author's use of web site addresses and phone numbers. In today's world, it is so easy to contact a facility via the web and much less expensive too! The descriptions of the places you can visit and the things you can see and do is very good. The pictures give you a taste of the beauty you will experience. The maps give you a detailed method of traveling from one area of the Sierra to another without having to hit the "main roads". My thanks to the authors and I surely suggest this is a great book for anyone that has or is planning to visit California's Sierra Nevada.

Essential reading for those interested in "The Work"
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-15
These memoirs are a one of a kind collection of first person accounts of one man's life and experiences in The Work. De Ropp gives a unique perspective in a very human yet objective and scientific fashion on the Gurdjieff work, the Ouspensky 4th way, and meetings with many of the key players and major authors in the field. I was surprised that he spent an entire chapter discussing the Castaneda material. There was no mention at all of E.J. Gold even though IDHHB is the publisher. I wish that De Ropp would have included a bit more discussion of the Enneagram and how it was used by Gurdjieff and Ouspensky. Overall, I think this book is essential reading for those interested in "The Work".

Another wonderful book by de Ropp, highly readeable

Written before his masterpiece "Self-Completion", this book is about his own search, his own pitfalls, and sheds a very interesting light onto his view of Gurdjieff, Bennett etc.
Very interesting his comments about when he sent some of his pupils to England, and the very intesting "transformation" most of them went through. De Ropp is so down to earth, and his warnings are of a positive kind, and his humor is wonderful.

I need to read this again to even try to speak clearly about it. This is not your ordinary sexual enhancement feel-good book. That would be very very far from the point of it.

It is many years worth of notes from private talks the author gave on techniques for an unusual path. If you are seriously interested in the subject then this book is worth getting. Good Luck!

A critique of culture, politics and society in early America
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-30
Whereas, Alexis de Tocqueville offers his perspective on America as an outside observer, the literary genius James Fenimore Cooper offers his assessment of culture, politics and society in 19th century America. He doesn't hold democracy to be sacrosanct like we do today, but rather like any other system of government with its advantages and disadvantages. His look at the nature of liberty and its relation with equality is particularly intriguing.

He is cognizant of the dangers posed to American self-government, which values legal equality. Equality, is a virtue, only insofar as it pertains to equal rights and equality before the law. Any effort at establishing equality of outcome is tantamount to tyranny and opposed to liberty. Cooper illustrates the precarious relationship between liberty and equality. Unless, tradition, custom, the rule of law and the Constitution are revered and upheld- the American Polity could easily collapse into majoritarian tyranny under a demagogue.

One gains an appreciation of the system of government established by the American founding fathers after reading this book... They established a constitutionally-limited federal republic, with limits not only on the power of government, but with limits placed on the power of majority rule, so as to limit the fundamental role of government to protecting the rights of its citizens. This constitutional republic sought to balance out monarchial, democratic, and aristocratic elements...

Healing in Space
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-25
Angels Healing Journey is a book one may choose to use to address the Being of another just as you might do if you were to do a reading from one of the various "Books of the Dead". You would do this typically for someone who is suffering from one illness or another, though the book can and is used as a "Book of the Dead" since it contains readings for the First Stage (The Symptoms), Transition, Confronting the Clear Light, The Second Stage ( Disintegration) and the subsequent readings for the standard (number of) 49 Chambers for those in transition in the between lives states.

An interesting feature of this book is the list of common diseases people suffer from, the names of their (corresponding) Angelic Healers, and the chamber(s) where they can be found. Turning to those chambers one can then read a description of these angelic entities and learn about some of their major attributes.

Like all of E.J. Gold's books, this one is no different in that it could cause the discerning reader to think again about what he or she already knows and typically will lead one on to learn more.

It is an invaluable little book to have around if you're one of those folks who like to quietly and discretely send healing thoughts in someone's direction.

About the Author
E. J. Gold has written more than four dozen books, including American Book of the Dead, The Human Biological Machine as a Transformational Apparatus, and Life in the Labyrinth. He is the first spiritual author and teacher to adapt the medium of the internet for spiritual training and inner work. He lives in Nevada City, California.

The reason I mention this is because E.J. Gold, master dreamwalking shaman, also captured Angels Healing Journey in CyberSpace, as a DVD.

Created out of compassion for those who are in a world of pain the video is a (virtual) spiritual healing journey.

Just like the book however, there is no real explaining about how a "vision quest designed in cyberspace" works; you just put it on and push 'play'.

Footnote: The audio need not be loud; in fact, it's best if it's barely audible.
