I have spent some time in NYC before but had always been with a city resident and hadn't ever needed a guide. But when the opportunity came about for my husband and I to spend a long weekend there, I absolutely took it. I love the city (in small doses, couldn't ever live there), but hadn't ever had a chance to do any touristy stuff. So I read some reviews and picked up this guide.

I spent a few days reading over it, and after my trip, I would say it's a great guide if you don't know what you want to do, or how to structure your days, because it has very specific suggestions for stuff like that. It has a section for each part of the city, at the end of which is a run down on a sample day one could spend in that neighborhood.

But as far as a comprehensive while-you're-there guide? I wish I had gotten Not For Tourists. This was a great planner, and had street and subway maps that were incredibly useful, but when you're looking for a bookstore nearby to kill an hour? Nada. Also, because of the setup of the book (chock full of Top Ten lists, duh), it jumps around a lot. One museum is mentioned in four different places, and vital information is only on one of those pages, but from the index there's no way to tell which one of those pages has something important like the hours of the place, for example, so you have to check every page.

Again, great for planning, less great for a carry-along for your trip.

Great subway map! Just don't forget to read the signs in the subway, some trains only run certain days/times. AND if I remember correctly PATH is not really in the book.

For those traveling to New York City this is an essential guide to bring with you. The restaurant recommendations are top notch. The maps are detailed and a pocket subway guide is always helpful. Whether you are going in for a week or a weekend this is the guide you want to carry with you when you are out and about. You may want to use another guide if you are going in for a longer period of time for planning purposes but again this is the one you want to carry with you when you are in the city.

I've used this guide several times on trips to NY and it is absolutely terrific. Pocketable, beautifully illustrated, wonderfully organized. We went to two of the restaurants recommended and were totally pleased. Very easy to use and filled with useful information. Will add a lot to a visit.

I visited NYC for the first time a few weeks ago. I took only three books about this city with me: this guide, the "Lonely planet NYC Guide", and "The Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide". Truth to be told, this guide is probably the only one I couldn't have done without.

"Top 10 New York" is an extremely useful small guide that doesn't have as much information as the "Lonely planet NYC Guide", but that has the essentials, and excellent fold out maps in color that are more easily understandable than those of other guides. I would like to highlight the fact that even though I am very absent minded, I could easily find my way in NYC thanks to those maps. And if I can, everybody will be able to do that!

From my point of view, this guide is ideal for those tourists that don't have a lot of time, and want to see as much as possible during their visit to NYC (specifically Manhattan), if possible without a tourist guide. "Top 10 New York" points out quite a few places you simply must go to in the city, but also tells you about different neighbourhoods, and their history. There are many photos in color that help you to decide what you want to do, and historic data that allows you to learn about this city.

Moreover, most visitors will find the insider tips for tourists helpful, and the planned walks and itineraries a good option. Other useful sections in this guide are, for example, "Best shopping districts", "Best hotels for every budget" (I found my hotel through Internet, though), "Best restaurants in each area" and "Most fun places for children". What is more, "Top 10 New York" is almost pocket-sized, so you can carry it with you everywhere, even if your purse is tiny (not my case!), or if you have bought too many things and your handbag is rather heavy (yes, that often happens to me).

All in all, I am very happy I bought this guide, and I strongly recommend it to you :)

FAST REAL ESTATE PROFITS was quite helpful and an easy read. The information given throughout the book is a must for beginners in the business. It is up front and candid about getting started and at the same time does not sugar coat the processes to make it sound as if any one can buy and flip houses.
I appreciated the information about developing a "team" of people to help through the processes: real estate agent, lawyer, accountant, lenders, contractors and inspectors. The process becomes easier when you have people you know and trust.
The book also contains terms used in buying and selling real estate, what avenue of financing to use, and how to find properties. Information given on priorities in renovating and scheduling can be quite valuable, as well as showing and selling the property.
I recommend the book to anyone interested in getting started in real estate.

This book touches on all the subjects for beginners to learn about flipping. I got a LOT out of it. Basically, you need a lot of help, and a lot of people around you, and if you get that, you have a good chance of succeeding. Good luck with financing tho...it's very tough right now. You really need money to make a go at flipping houses!

I just bought serveral similar books here. I would say this is the good book worth to reading. The good point is that it does tell something you may not know about flipping, not just giving you some basic ideas.

Sebastian Howell explains the art of flipping houses in easy to understand and honest tone. She uses this book to lay out step by step all the things to consider and how to go through the whole process of flipping a house from, "Is this something I might want to do" to Depositing the money in the bank. Not only does she cover the whole process from beginning to end, but she covers all the options available to you at each stage. In doing this she covers the pro's and con's for each option and which people they would be best for and which people should choose another option at that particular stage.

I've read several other books trying to research if flipping is something I could do on the side. Howell puts flipping into perspective for those wanting to do it as their full time job as well as those not quite ready to give up their 9 to 5 jobs. Overall this is a very informative book and a definite resource for those just starting and those who are trying to make the decision... "To flip or not to flip?"

You've seen all the shows on television that shows the audience how easy people make money flipping houses. But, I'm sure that you've wondered, just like I have, just how possible is it? Well, Sebastian Howell has laid it all out in black and white. The author has described the process in universal terms, meaning you could apply her principles to any geographical area.

This book is easy to understand and deals in both the basics and the more complex material. It starts off with simple explanations and moves on to understanding the market and the business of making money through buying and selling houses. It gives clear definitions of the legal terms and the jargon that you'll come across in the industry. The author also clearly explains the various people you will associate with and their roles on your team. I really appreciated the examples used in the book. They help to clarify the material. The section covered on financing is comprehensive and understandable with tips to pulling it altogether.

One the most beneficial sections in the book is a complete list of what to look for in a `flippable' house. She gives clear instructions of what to take note of, what can work and what might cause some problems. Once you've found the ideal property, she leads you through the negotiating process. She deals with renovating properties and then moves the reader onto the selling process. The added bonus to the book is the comprehensive index at the back.

Maggie Phillips has gathered an excellent assortment of methods for dealing with pain. These include breathing exercises; sorting out feelings about pain; relaxation; imagery; mindfulness; bioenergy approaches; movement; pendulating (alternating between constriction and expansion); love; and building on success. Each section has discussions, case examples, helpful exercises, notes and references.Phillips' approach is very straightforward and practical, acknowledging that no single method is suitable for every person or every pain. This is an excellent book both for those needing help with pain relief and for therapists who want to learn diverse methods for dealing with pain.

As a psychologist I have treated chronic pain for many years. This is by far the best resource for learning to manage chronic pain that I have ever seen. The author combines informative and accurate information about chronic pain from medical science with the discoveries of mind-body techniques that can help in coping with pain. Amazingly, the author has been able to do this without excessive professional talk so the average reader can benefit from what she has to offer. James L. Helmuth, Ph.D.

This book is a great guide to finding ways to reduce personal perception of pain. The author makes no claims to cure the underlying problem but offers many options to help one manage pain. Each chapter has several options and each person can choose what combination of activites works for them. Highly recommended.

I think that Dr. Phillips has a clear and effective writing style and an abundance of knowledge about pain and healing. Her advice and case studies are interesting as well as helpful. Great book for professionals and for sufferers or caretakers dealing with chronic pain.

This is a good book for the prospective real estate investor. I find it useful just for reading, and also for reference.

"The Real Estate Investors Handbook" is a terrific guide for successful investing. The book could be a little overwhelming for a novice, but it is an excellent resource for the serious investor. It offers an in-depth and complete guide to making profits from real estate. The book also stresses the importance of record keeping and provides an assortment of financial forms and letters to be used when dealing with your property. Also included in the book are real-life testimonies from investors telling about their real estate successes and failures.
This book is a necessity for all real estate investors. The tips and helpful hints are an invaluable resource that can be referred to over and over again.

Having been a part-time real estate investor myself, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Steven Fisher's book. Given the large volume of unhelpful books on real estate investing, I am pleased to see so much valuable information in a single book. If you have been, or plan to get, involved in real estate investing, this is the single best book to use.

Fisher covers all of the strategies that make for successful investing: starting with little money, "flipping," mortgages, foreclosures, and REO's. Unlike other books, Fisher also explains the secrets to finding the right properties. Given that property identification is the most common mistake that would-be real estate investors make, this chapter of the book is especially useful.

The book also includes some effective plans for tax advantages and exit strategies. If you want to own and make money from real estate, get this book!

This book provides an outstanding "how to" overview of what to do to get started in real estate investing.

After reading this book my wife and I were able to make our first real estate investment, and actually located an outstanding rental property investment opportunity where the seller is including two years of guaranteed monthly rental income. This is allowing us to start investing now when our cash flow won't free up for this investment opportunity for another nine months.

Buy It! Read It! Keep It! That is my advice to anyone who thinks that they might ever be interested in buying a piece of property. Steven Fisher's book "The Real Estate Investor's Handbook: The Complete Guide for the Individual Investor" is an excellent guide to show you the way through the maze. I think that this is a must have for someone that only plans to buy one property or for the next "Donald Trump" wannabe. Steven has covered a great amount of material in this book that is absolutely dynamite. I recommend this book to one and all.

I am really glad I bought this book. I also purchased The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2008 and Beyond Disney. The latter 2 are Huge books (one of them being over 800 pages of info) full of more info than I can possibly dig into.
This book is great because it is short and to the point telling you the top 10 attractions in many different catergories. I suggest getting this book on top of your Frommers or Unofficial guide as it will help you know what you want to research in the other books.
While there is not a lot of details in this book about each place, it is best used as a guide to figure out what you want to research more into. It also has some really nice fold out laminated maps on the cover which will be so helpful to bring with on our vacation.

This travel guide combines the right amount of Theme parks with classic Orlando. The top 10 attractions covered are primarily theme parks but then when region by region is broken down you can really see the various areas to explore in Orlando. From downtown Orlando to Cape Canaveral there are lots of fun and cheap things that can be done outside of Disney and Universal. This is a great start to planning any trip. If you are just going for the theme parks than I would use a different book but if you want to see it all this is the one to get.

You will love the precise but beautifully informative ideas in this particular edition on Orlando.

Steve Allen had so much talent, not the least of which was writing. He writes as good a detective novel as almost every other writer. He's funny, fast paced, and has the unique ability to mix fact and fiction, a fascinating combination. Some characters in the book are real (Steve and his wife, Jayne, for example) and others are not (the murderers). While weaving his plot, he gives the reader an inside glimpse of Hollywood which is always clever and insightful. I not only say "Don't miss this book", I say, "Don't miss ANY of Steve Allen's books."

This book was excellent, with a bevy of intertwined suspects and multiple murders, set in a situation where the protagonists - Steve Allen and his real life wife Jayne Meadows - are in personal danger. Mr Allen does an outstanding job of leading the reader astray with well thought out red herrings, but pulls together a spectacular grand finale, coming back from the dead to provide a unique entertainment show, where he reveals the killer to all. Too bad Steverino isn't around to continue his murder series.

This was a very humourous and lighthearted book which was a joy to read. Steve Allen and his wife Jane Meadows make a cute detective duo in this easy-to-read mystery whodunit. The duo is booked on an atlantic cruise filled with humor, love, betrayal, and secret plots---all of the ingredients for a delightful mystery book.

Murder on the Atlantic, written by great TV comicSteve Allen, follows in the tradition of Murderin Vegas, in Manhattan and on the Glitterbox -- all by Steve Allen. Steve, his lovely wife Jayne, and their friend Cass, all find themselves investigating murder on the luxury liner Atlantis. There's enough suspense to keep it witty, and enough wit to keep it suspenseful. Allen is a sort of an everyman (despite his fame) who solves mysteries with pedestrian panache!

This is my first Steve Allen mystery. I loved it. I prefer light cozy type mysteries without graphic violence, vulgar language, etc. Steve writes himself and his wife Jayne Meadows as the sleuths in a high seas mystery reminiscent of the English houseparty genre. Isolation and inability to contact the authorities force the Allen's to sort through many suspects and motives as a series of bodies appear, while simultaneously coping with multiple crises creating urgent need for resolution of the mystery. The plot is intricate, the clues in plain sight but easy to miss or misunderstand. He gives the reader a fair chance to deduce the plot points. Many real life folks are entwined with fictional characters often thinly disguised representatives of the rich and famous such as Princess Diana; The characters are complex, and the story is witty and suspenseful. Steve Allen is a kind and gentle man, funny, and intelligent, and it shows strongly in the story. I especially like the picture he painted of his wife Jayne, and the wonderful way he represented the passion, trust and friendship possible in a lifelong marriage without a single scene involving heavy breathing (well the romantic kind anyway). It was a pleasure to spend the time with him. I intend to read all his other books.

This book covers almost all of the information needed for A Levle.

I would recomend purchasing it in prefrance to other revisoion books.

Quite simply, this is the best general purpose computing book I have ever read. It would say it is absolute essential for A-level students, but also has an awful lot to offer anyone else, as this will act as a superb reference book for many years to come. If you are studying computing in any form, then you are doing yourself an injustice by not owning this superb book....

If you are an A level computing student, I strongly recommend you to buy this book. Most information in the book is up to date. Color printed, which can always keep you awake. Even if you feel the book not enough for you, it provides some web site for you to reinforce the book.

The Best A level book I have seen. Covers all of the most recent material

Many years ago I read the story "Killdozer" in an anthology book of some sort, and never forgot the story. I didn't know anything about the author, and had no idea that he wrote many more stories beyond the one I had had the opportunity to read. Then I stumbled across this series of books in Amazon, bought one, read it, loved it, and now have all ten volumes in my collection.

So here's my verdict: Theodore Sturgeon was not just one of the best writers of Science Fiction; he wasn't just one of the best writers of short stories. He was, one of the best writers ever, period. While the stories are cloaked in the veneer of science fiction, they are in fact, stories of deep insight into the human condition. You cannot read these volumes and not be touched, moved, and inspired. Don't miss the opportunity to read some of these wonderful stories. And if you're truly inspired, get the short novel More Than Human.

It's Sept 2006, and I just spotted the following listed on the Locus site, scheduled for June 2007 release. I suppose this is good news, though it means I'm going to have to buy another bookcase.

Sturgeon, Theodore * When You Care, When You Love: The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon, Volume XI * (North Atlantic, cln, hc)

This latest volume is again an excellent addition to the series. I just wish we would be able to find out what's going on with the rest of the books: this was originally supposed to be a ten volume collection but since this latest volume only goes through 1960, there is clearly more material to be collected. Some of the volumes are of shorter length then others, which also puzzles me. Material isn't being left out to keep down the page count?

In any case, stories like "The Graveyard Reader" show the sensitivity and skill that only a master like Sturgeon can convey in a short story. If you're already a fan, you know this; if not, buy the book. Sturgeon truly was one of the finest American short story writers ever.

The Time Out Guide to New York is, in my opinion, the best general guidebook you can buy to the city. It's updated annually, so the material is fresh, but best of all it brings the Time Out attitude and style to the guide book series. It's filled with full color photos (similar to the Knopf guides) and the listings contain not only the usual sights, stores and attractions, but also some of the more funky, out of the way places.

Plusses:

- Comprehensive coverage of most areas (see restaurant note below) - Lots of photos - Web site addresses for most listings - Content is also on their web site (www.timeout.com and www.timeoutny.com ) and updated regularly. - Not just the usual "everything is great" attitude that you get with Frommers or Fodors. - Contains ads for shows, hotels, restaurants (I like this as it gives more of a picture of the item. NOTE: There's big disclaimer in the front stating that even though they accept ads, their reviewers are independent)

- Small enough to fit in purse or (larger) back pocket. - Good cross referencing between sections

Minuses:

- Restaurant section not comprehensive. It's still very good, but selective. This may be due to the fact that they also publish a very comprehensive restaurant guide to NY. - Portions of the museum section are a bit skimpy. For example, the Knopf guides have 3 or 4 pages on the Metropolitan Museum, including floor plans and highlights of each collection, whereas this guide has about two column-inches of text on the Met. - No web site listings for restaurants.

As I said, this is the best guide to New York I've found (and I have them all). Highly recommended.

Time Out New York (TONY) , which is updated annually, is a MUST for anyone visiting the city. The first chapter is a concise and fascinating history of New York, outlining important events throughout its vast history. Proceeding through this indespensible guidebook, you'll find detailed information about where to stay, eat, and drink, and the places and events not to miss in each neighborhood of the vibrant city. Because the guide is written by locals, the recommendations and warnings are pertinent and current from people "in the know," who astutely guide residents and visitors through the maze that would be overwhelming without this terrific guide. Each place listed also has address, phone, and often websited listed, as well as prices and review. The maps in the back of the book are easy to read and the book is well organized and indexed

Another great travel book from the British Time Out people, in the tried and true Time Out format: Not alot on history or architecture, like you get with the Eyewitness or Knopf guides, but a straight to the point attitude in a easy to research portable book up-to-date and very helpful. The Time Out viewpoint is that partaking of the life of the city is as important as looking at the sights, so there is always great information on what to do after the museum closes, how to enjoy the city. There are 75 pages on sightseeing, a 114 pages on Arts & Entertainment, plus sections on bars, restaurants, and shopping. Each section is broken down by location, so the restaurants in Soho are listed togther, as are the bars in Midtown, which is the right way to do it.
Great for research before the trip to get an idea of what you plan to do &when, with websites for the individual places listed along with phone numbers and hours of operation. The maps are good; there are some pictures (nothing like Eyewitness). This is a good book to get before you go to help plan your trip to get the most enjoyment out of it, especially for nightlife.

I'm a single woman and I went to New York with a lot of trepidation. A friend gave me The Top 10 Guide as a going away present. I read it on the plane and I was so excited about the city by the time I got there. It's filled with inside hints and highlights of special places and things to do. The author shares his enthusiasm for the city and tells you the most important things to do to make your trip fun. I was there alone for a week and I used this Guide exclusively. The author's got everything organized. I just went down the lists checking off everything as I did them. I had a terrific time. And it was the Top 10 Guide made the difference. I strongly recommend it.

This is the best guide on New York I've ever read. It's fast, pithy and filled with inside information. I go to New York a lot on business and I've tried a lot of guides but this is the best. It highlights the top restaurants in a city filled with outstanding restaurants, the top sights to see in a city filled with interesting places and the top things to do in a city loaded with things to do; it's just a terrific guide! The best!
