I have read numerous books by John Robinson and this is one of my favorites. In this book he gives a wonderful overview of the history behind the people, places, events and natural wonder that is the San Gabriel Mountains. As a historian, columnist and author (book: Southern California Miscellany) I am very particular about books regarding Southern California, Robinson's books are at the top of my list!

Can't be beat

The San Juan Skyway is one of the most spectacular drives in the United States, bar none. For years I've been waiting for a comprehensive coffee table book which shows the grandeur of this place. Finally Scott Warren has come to the rescue. The photos are absolutely breathtaking and give you a sense what it's like both to drive the road, and to see it from different perspectives you can't get from a car. If any of you are anywhere near Durango, Colorado, just frives towards Silverton and then on to Ouray, and you'll experience some of the most jaw-dropping scenery left in America. Whether you're an armchair traveler, or the real deal, this book will enchant you.

Highly recommended for both tourist and business traveler, the text is clearly presented and includes an informative summary of Santa Fe's colorful history.

The Santa Fe in Colorado
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-05
This book is no. 23 in the prestigious annual publications of the Colorado Railroad Museum. It details the arrival of the AT&SF Railroad in Colorado with the major portion of the book being dedicated to the history of the Raton Pass section of the line. It is heavily illustrated with excellent black and white photography, including a section on the steam engines that worked the area. Photography is almost exclusively of the steam era. No history of the Santa Fe and specifically Raton Pass is complete without this volume. Hardback, 296 pages.

Breezy, Practical
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-19
Both this guide and "Children's Guide to Santa Fe" provide basic information about the usual activities and attractions popular with children in Santa Fe: the Children's Museum, Palace of the Governors, the Plaza, and lots of others. Both are great guidebooks written for parents to help them select places to visit and activities to include when they take their children to Santa Fe.

This guide is more informal than the other--breezy even--and its information seems more personalized, yet practical. It focuses more on outdoor activities, but also includes useful descriptions of child-friendly (yet interesting) restaurants. It is shorter and a little cheaper than the other.

You will likely be happy with either guidebook to help you select activities for your children to enjoy in the wonderful place that is Santa Fe.

Of course, if you are looking for a guide that is written for children rather than for parents--one that can be your child's own--I recommend I See Santa Fe!: A Children's Guide and Coloring Book

We have already done one of these hunts and we had a blast. It made the hike more fun for those in the group that don't really enjoy hiking. Those of us who love to hike enjoyed it all the more.
