Out of all the books I have read in my life so far this was the best. I have traveled the world in the past 5 years on mission's trips to help others. I must say this book has wanted to make me make a difference. I want to become a world changer because of it. Many times through out the book with the excellent writings of Relin and Mortenson I found myself standing and walking a side of Greg. I can't recommend this book enough. I have purchased many copies to give to friend's world wide. Please read it!!

Excellent book, highly impressed by Greg's efforts to educate girls in the part of the world, where even a local Pakistani would fear to start such a project. Greg certainly did a wonderful job of understanding and blending himself with the local people, inorder to fully understand poor village people's problems he related himself with the local people to an extent that, he could see their problem from their perspective. Mr.Relin has done justice in telling the story of Greg's epic journey. Two thumbs up highly recommended reading.

This is an outstanding story, well told. I think it should be required reading at the high school level. I also think every member of Congress should read it. It is not only heart warming, but really significant that one person can accomplish so much and to know that there are so many muslims that share or value of education for both boys and girls. It was also very educational about what is going on in that part of the world.

This book was absolutely amazing. I don't have much to write as others have already done great reviews. I want to say that part of the book's intent is to convey that education for remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan is essential in reducing/preventing extremist sects. However, I think is it also essential for the rest of the world to read this book as education on the importance of these values and as a great look into an insider's view of the culture in Pakistan and Afghanistan. I was blown away by this book and if you can read it, you should!

They both are "revolutionists" who are trying to overthrow governments. I see no difference between this book and Mao's Red Diary. I guess you can say this is the Mao's diary for infowarriors and conspiracy nuts. Worst read ever and there's a reason he only got 0.5% of Republican Delegates. Don't be persuaded by nut job and jobies Alex Jones, his propaganda is the only reason why there was so much internet hype (we all see where that went), think outside of the box and be independent...
America's Roots: Paul shows the wisdom of the Founding Fathers

Anyone curious about the Founding Fathers should read this book. They saw the mess of England, dealt with their own mess through the Articles of Confederation, and knew exactly what they were looking for when they created the Constitution: A government with strict limits. Ron Paul explains why less government is best, and shows how the U.S. Constitution allows for nothing less.

You would be surprised to see how our government is screwing us so bad and how they spend our hard earned money. Or maybe you wouldn't be surprised. This is a great book.
Good on domestic policy, bad on foreign policy

Ron Paul is certainly the most interesting politician of his time. I am behind his domestic policy 95% of the time, but his foreign policy is very naïve. Yes the founding fathers did not want us going abroad...but they also lived in a time where the United States could free ride off the security the Brittish Empire brought to the Western World. Geopolitical changes have also brought an end to the days of noninterventionsism because our oceans can not longer protect us from planes, missiles and terrorists. And no, I don't buy into the naïve argument that "they" would just leave us alone if we left them alone. Our enemies abroad do not seek peace with us any more than our enemies here at home really want equality and multiculturalism. What they both want is the destruction of the West.
However, Congressman Paul makes an excellent argument that if we don't trust big government here at home to fix problems, why should we expect the same government to go abroad and fix the societies of the Middle East? The answer is we shouldn't. Just because we break it, doesn't mean we have to fix it. Interventionism can occur for strategic reasons without it becoming the Wilsonian foreign policy of George Bush.

You know that feeling you get right before a big election? The total and complete indifference that is akin to having tea or coffee with your meal perhaps? The apathy that I was once accustomed to experience when the conversation turned towards politics has since been replaced with a burning and intense passion and desire for real change. As we all know far too well that nothing of substance really changes within our federal government. Ron Paul proposes real change, and his source of inspiration is our Constitution.

This is a wonderful book about an unbelievable champion - the kind we need today in America. A champion that reaches into the hearts of the people, unifies us and inspires us to prevail. The men who believed in Seabiscuit were not perfect, nor was Seabiscuit but they all managed to be imperfect winners. The writing itself might be a bit flourished but it is certainly well-researched and the story is entertaining told. Hillebrand has captured the ironies, truths, the agony and ecstasy of horse-racing and life itself as well. This one will make you cheer.

I can't recall the number of non-fiction books that I've read. Little matter, this is the most incredible true story that I've read!!
Laura Hillenbrand has captured a time in American History. She is a true storyteller who has done impeccable research. It must have been the time she spent in Gambier, Ohio at Kenyon College that inspired her to such great in depth writing.
For those of you who have not read this book or have not seen the excellent movie, you're in for an incredible treat. Trust Me!!
If I were writing fiction, this true story would not have been told. Charles Howard, Red Pollard and Tom Smith are indeed the Holy Trinity. Remember these names, after reading this book, you will never forget them.
One little horse, so much history!!! Incredible!!!!

I have recently read Seabiscuit and watched the film and found both to be very compelling. We dont think much anymore about the dark days of the Depression but Laura Hillenbrand puts us right back in the middle of it. The important lesson was to look to the future as Charles Howard implored, the sun will come up tomorrow.
Three incredible characters intersect with this horse of unknown promise. Howard is the wealthy owner, despondent over the death of his son and unsure how to live the life of leisure; Red Pollard is a jockey not able to break into the big-time, due to his attitude, blindness, and injuries; Tom Smith is a taciturn man who belongs in the 19th century of his youth, not the modern world. Together they develop and promote Seabiscuit, a horse of incredible bloodlines, yet given up on by better trainers due to his work habits, attitude, injuries, and size.
Eventually the Biscuit wins all the stakes in the state of California and gets a shot at a match race with the great Eastern horse and Triple Crown winner, War Admiral. Both horses are descendants of the great Man'o'war, but the eastern elites dont want to give the western upstart his chance. After a few cancellations due to injuries and prickly owners, the match race goes off in Baltimore and the smaller horse brings it home.
The book is more enlighting with respect to the fuller stories of the characters, especially the relationship between the jockeys and Pollard's romance and marriage to a Boston nurse. The movie brings the times to life. Howard and Pollard were the raconteurs who made Seabiscuit the hero of the little guys during those lean years. Dont forget, tough times dont last but tough guys do.
Ms. Hillenbrand is an equally interesting story. She suffers from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and is only able to work at a fraction of the typical writer. Here she focused her energy on this story and these times. Seabiscuit has been the story many times in film and books but Ms. Hillenbrand brings it to life for us.

When I got this book (a friend loaned it to me) I thought, huh, ok, sure I'll give it a try. Wow, I had no idea how good this story was going to be. I could not quit reading. Michael was so faithful to God, and it had a huge impact on me. I liked it so much that I bought two books of my own; one for me to keep, and one to loan out. Everyone that I loan it to is so moved by this story. Way to go Francine Rivers. Please keep it up! BEST BOOK I EVER READ BY FAR! This book should be in the schools as required reqding material.

My mom had given me this book saying, "This is what a real prince charming should be like." I looked at her funny when I realized what the story was about and was a little hesitant.
The book was fantastic! I couldn't put it down for one second (I stayed up till' three in the morning reading it). Even for those who aren't christians, I think any girl would enjoy reading about Michael's character. He's, in my opinion, what every girl wants in a man. He's loving, caring, gentle, compassionate, honest, romantic, and loves Angel more than anything in the world.
Considering that Angel is an ex-prostitute you have to expect some references to what her job was. There are also a few parts where her and Michael are making love, but it's after they have been married and Francine Rivers doesn't go into any details.
All in all, I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone who dreams of true love and likes reading inspirational stories. No matter what those other reviewers say, christian or not, just try it and I'll guarantee you'll be glad you took the time to read it.

I think it's important that I preface this by saying that I am not a Christian (which had a definite effect on my opinion of this book, if only because I was able to look past the intended "inspirational message" and appraise it as a novel.) This book was recommended to me by multiple (devoutly religious) relatives on the grounds that I would like the love story and that they had cried over it.
First of all, "Redeeming Love" is poorly written to the extreme. It's full of choppy sentences and far too many melodramatic sentence fragments. All of the characters, and especially Michael and Angel, are incredibly dull: Angel is your stereotypical, self-loathing prostitute, while Michael marries her because a very articulate and surprisingly talkative God tells him to, displays no depth to speak of, and seems completely unable to think for himself. The plot is excessively repetitive and annoyingly redundant, and none of the "twists" were even mildly surprising.
Secondly, the book was a poorly disguised vehicle for marketing Christianity, which in my opinion degrades both the book and the religion. Some of the reviewers claim to have been moved by Angel's spiritual journey; personally, I felt Rivers relied on the faith of her target audience and the tragedy (or horror, if you prefer) of some of the concepts in the book- such as children sold into prostitution- as opposed to her strength as a writer or the relatability of the characters to produce that effect.
Many of the reviewers complained about the "graphic" sexual content in the book. I have no idea what they're talking about- the book I read was not graphic, and all the sex was either vaguely referenced or simply just implied. Much of it was in the context of marriage: I don't understand how the idea of a married couple having sex can be considered shocking.
I cannot believe that this book received over five hundred five-star reviews. It is not worth your time, it is not worth your money, and honestly, it is not worth the effort of five hundred people to type up a few mindlessly praising words on Amazon.com.

WOW. All I can say is that for the first time in my life I began to hear the Lord speak to me through this book! I could literally feel the presence of God's love all around me as I read this book. "Redeeming Love" has caused me to fall in love with my Savior all over again! It is a new and fresh love that I now have in my heart for Him! If you feel like you have fallen away from Him and miss His love and presence then you HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK!!! I promise, it will re-ignite your love for Him. He has always been there waiting on you to fall in love with Him again. HE NEVER STOPS LOVING US! It is US who falls away from Him! This book will prove that to you!

The book was well written, great humor and very relatable for anyone who has ever been in love or would like to be. The only thing is that the cover does not give the book any justice. At first glance you would think its one of those trashy romance novels, however its about more than romance, its about true love and the romance behind it.

This novel was a soulful journey. It connects with the reality of relationships and with all of its struggles and triumph. I was drawn into the characters from the opening page. He tells this tale with a poetic spin. His words unfold beautifully and each character takes on a life of its own. I think readers will find a little bit of themselves in this book. I loved it!

The emotions of the characters are so strong that they leap off of the page. This book makes you want to go out and fall in love and hope that you experience half the passion and true love that these characters experience.

Colin Channer to me is like a modern day Picasso with a pen. His dialogue is compelling, soul-stirring and purposeful and his characters are engaging. You can almost close your eyes and imagine yourself seeing the story unfold as if you were a fly on the wall at a gallery in New York, a beach house in Jamaica, or the Streets of London. This is the mark of a truly great storyteller.
Our main character, Fire, is a "simple" man with a "complex" life. By simple I mean he wants what any sane person would want, a circle of good life-long friends, a fulfilling life, and someone emotionally and physically available to share it all with. So, when he meets Sylvia, he feels like he has found the one. What he doesn't know is that Sylvia, an engaged magazine editor, is all but disengaged from her own true desires for her life. Soon we see that complications abound, and the journey they take throughout the story takes the reader on a cross-continental journey in search of introspection, true meaning and, possibly, true love.
An interesting point is that Channer's characters are written from their souls - what drives them to do the things they do is less about their gender than their emotions and their pasts. With such a multi-faceted story, several layers of conflict, we still get a crystal clear picture and understanding as to why things unfold teh way they do. It is a believable, gripping, page turner, and Channer conveys it effortlessly.
Waiting in Vain, simply put, was one of the two best books I have read in a long time. The other was Satisfy My Soul (also by Colin Channer). As an aspiring writer, I wish my prose was as naturally beautiful as Mr. Channer's. Until it is, I will keep devouring his work in hopes that some of his literary poeticism rubs off.

What a summer ride I've been on reading Lonesome Dove. I don't know where I've been the last 15 years to only now discover this absolutely amazing story. I smiled, laughed, and cried my way through it. I will surely miss the Hat Creek Cattle boys keeping me up at night. What an adventure!

It took me several attempts after several years to get through the first chapter -- don't ask -- but I am so grateful I persisted. What a wonderful book and great masterpiece. Simply satifying on every level. What a joy!
Avoid. Boring to say the least.

I wish I could have given this grossly over rated book zero stars. Even one star is being too kind. Having heard so much, I felt totally let down. Lack of development of characters, slow pace, no excitement. Come on, when we read a western we want a John Wayne kind of a western. Good story, emotions, actions. Want to read westerns? Try finding the SUDDEN series. Now thats what was required. What we are handed out is trash. Do yourself a favour. Avoid at all costs.

This novel is like the Rio Grande river, where the story begins: Long, wide, but only a few feet deep.
I read almost 400 pages, waiting to be gripped, but then I gave up and rented the miniseries on DVD instead. It's terrific -- four stars!
The next time I want to read a Western, I'll get a Louis L'Amour. Fun, well-written, packs a punch, and done in two days.

The scope of this majestic book truly befits the epic effort by James Cameron with his cinematic masterpiece "Titanic". Much great information here for the movie buff who likes to see how it is done. Incredible sets including the dining salon, complete even to dishes and decor. I was amazed to see how this particular set was pulled underwater by hydraulics to provide a very realistic feeling of sinking. Page after page of photographs and stories about the magnificent sets that brought this film to life. Lots of info about the stars and other cast members as well the production crew. This book is a perfect companion to the movie as well as a testament to the filmmaking genius of James Cameron.

This is a big and detailed book, not for the faint of heart. But, if you love history and/or politics, this is a book for you. Truman was an unlikely president and this book captures the man's personality, humility, and dignity. Carefully researched and described, the book opens the door to one of our nation's most unique and dinstinguished characters. An epic book about an epic man. Delightful.

I couldn't have been more pleased with this book. I love David McCullough and he never ceases to amaze you with this intimate portrayal of Harry Truman's life. He brings the President to the level of an average man who finds himself in an above-average position. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an in-depth look at one of our most interesting Presidents to-date.
I have to agree with a previous reviewer: upon reading this, I have such a desire to meet and converse with HST--that's how interesting and honorable he was.

As always, McCullough's narrative sweep is impressive. Truman as a lonely and bookish boy, Truman as a soldier, Truman as a failed businessman are the most interesting parts. When it comes to Truman's presidency, McCullough turns up little new grounds, however. It's the usual conventional wisdom about a guy who made tough decisions that turned out right. Read Perrett's "Commander in Chief" for a harsher and more surprising evaluation of Truman's decision-making and his monumental blunders.

The book itself was a winner - a gift for my husband. He "devoured" it. The only disappointment was how cheaply and poorly-bound the paperback was. Even with extreme care, it fell apart within the first 70 pages. The replacement nearly made it to the end, but not quite. Buy and read this book, but go for a better-bound version unless you like handling it in pieces.

I have read most of McCullough's books, and so I knew that after reading this I would understand Harry S. Truman more deeply than I ever had. What I didn't know what was that I would learn so much about 20th century American history. McCullough is a great story-teller. His use of historical details to recreate the man and the times is magnificent. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I read this book in 2006 but recently read it again...and I just simply love it. EJD really goes down deep in the soul with Debra, that made me cry!!! I love this book sooo much, it was well developed and the characters realllyyy had some depth to them...this is one of my favs besides 'liars game' and 'the other woman'!!! If you are just becoming a fan of EJD, you need to read this and then move on to others...lovedddddd it!

I have just complete this book and I must say I totally enjoyed it. Dickey captures the reality of relationships in a way that is sooo deep. The petty nuisances, the fights, the lovemaking, the distractions. He also connects on a deeper level by addresing issues which affect us in relationships (childhood experiences, past relationships) that come back to haunt us when we least expect it.
The one thing that was a little off was his time scheme where Debra was only approx 6mths pregnant when tragedy struck which made me wonder if the story was months old or years old. The time lapses needed to be a little clearer. Butttt it was a great read and I could not put it down (completed in two days flat).

I have read this book 6 times and counting (because I will definitely read it again). I just purchased the play last week and it's just as good. The way the story unfolds has you wanting everyone to win. Don't want to give it away but if you are sentimental you will cry, trust me. I am a fan of EJD's books and I knew this would be my favorite one before I read any other ones. A great buy that will not disappoint.

I have had this book for a while but just felt compelled to write a review on it. I have read this book so many times I have lost count. It is a timeless romance that would appeal to black and white, man or woman. This book is just an all around good read. I used to not enjoy reading at all & it was EJD's books that started me into the world of reading. Like a previous reviewer said it is not your ordinary happy ending romance but by the time you get to the end it is well worth the ride. You will laugh, you will cry, you will identify with the characters. If you ever wanted or needed to believe in love, and finding happiness against all odds then this is the book for you. Honestly....JUST DO YOURSELF A FAVOR & READ THIS BOOK!!!

This book was empowering for my daughter. She read it every evening for a week after she got it, and we talked about the parts that were a little confusing. She loved being able to talk like an expert on topics so important to her right now. (She is almost 10.) It doesn't provide information on more grown-up topics, so it's good for a young tween. The drawings on the cover may seem a little young, but they are less intimidating than photos might be, I think. An excellent resource.

A friend of mine recommended I get this book for my nine year-old daughter, after my daughter asked me with some concern what people meant by "getting pregnant by accident." In the past, my daughter had resisted all of my efforts to talk about the birds and the bees, and even in the conversation that ensued after this pregnancy question, she seemed uncomfortable and worried.
When I gave her this book to read, she could not put it down on the first day. Later on, she told me that it was as if the book was "reading her mind." She even pointed out a page to me that showed several diagrams of a girl's body in various stages of development and pointed to one of the diagrams and said, "This is where I am, don't you think?" She has continued to refer to the book again and again, and every once in a while she will tell me some of the pointers she has learned in this book. If your daughter is between the ages of 8 and 11, she will probably enjoy this wonderful book. I can't say enough what a great reference tool it has been for my daughter.

My daughter loves this book. It has information and advice about a girl's body, while staying away from controversial subjects. (Personally I'm in the tell-'em-young camp, but I know not everybody is). Anyway, this book covers physical development, hair washing, ear piercing, and all manner of random coming-of-age stuff in an extremely accessible way.

This is a great book for helping girls understand what is happening to their bodies as they grow up. The information is correct, clear and EASY TO UNDERSTAND. The sketches of people are clear and detailed enough to be helpful, but not so graphic that they hinge on porn. My daughter loved reading this book and refers to it even after two years. It sure made my job easier!
