Technology manager of the Ann Arbor District Library and lifetime gamer Eli Neiburger presents Gamers... in the Library?! The Why, What, and How of Videogame Tournaments for All Ages, a guide to planning, setting up, and running video game tournaments in a public library in order to earn a place in the hearts and minds of local video game fans. "Games are content too, and as a format, they are in high demand in your community, especially among those pesky nontraditional library users." Chapters discuss why tournaments specifically are a preferable option for incorporating videogames into the library (public game kiosks or unlimited browser-based games foster animosity over the limited resource of access to the game), why it's important to choose one's software before choosing hardware, why serving food can be beneficial (but there's no need for beverages other than ice water), and much more. A tournament based on a game that involves physical activity such as Dance Dance Revolution can even promote exercise and fitness! The step-by-step instructions for successfully hosting a tournament are especially appreciated in this top-notch resource, recommended not only for public libraries but also for anyone seeking to promote social fun and community-building through gaming.

First published in 1896. Emanuel Lasker won the world championship by defeating the ageing Steinitz in 1894. However there remained many doubters who believed that the youthful Lasker was still inferior to rivals such as Pillsbury and Tchigorin. St Petersburg 1896 was a baptism of fire which proved beyond a shadow of doubt that the new champion had come to stay. In one of the fiercest and most gruelling tests of strength at elite level the world champion emerged victorious against his most dangerous rivals. In the process he played a masterpiece of sacrificial attack as black against Pillsbury which lives on as one of the most brilliant and impenetrable games ever played - a game about which debate still rages as can be seen from Kasparov's essay on it in his classic new book series - "My great predecessors".

James Mason was a player of grandmaster strength who was born in Ireland but subsequently emigrated both to the USA and the UK. William Pollock was an English Master who died, prematurely, shortly after completing his work on this book.

The St. Petersburg Grand International Masters' Tournament of 1914 was undoubtedly the most important tournament since the first San Sebastian Tournament, when Capablanca won his spurs, or, as some will have it, since the St. Petersburg Quadrangular Tournament of 1895.

It would be noteworthy even if for no other reason than that the World's Champion, Dr. Emanuel Lasker, took part - the first occasion since the last International Tournament in St. Petersburg in 1909. On that occasion, however he tied for the first place with Akuba K. Rubinstein instead of winning outright, as on this occasion and in 1895.

It is a remarkable circumstance that this time Rubinstein did not even attain so high as fifth place, which would have enabled him to play in the second section for the allocation of the prizes, the more extraordinary in view of his almost unbroken success of late years. The St. Petersburg Chess Society was responsible for the initiation, organization, and conduct of the Tournament, the Tsar himself subscribing 1,000 roubles towards the prize fund.

Conclusion of the first adventure in the series

This book provides the second half of the adventure begun in "Search for the King". If you're just starting out with Knight's Kingdom books (and toys, of course!), these two books are the ones to start with.
The style of writing is stiff, but seems appropriate for the subject matter. My kindergartner isn't yet able to read these books on his own, but loves to hear them read to him. He has all the Lego toys that are part of the Knight's Kingdom series too. Very fun for young boys.

Dog-gone good ... and educational too.

A fan (and an Inernet student) of mine recently sent me a copy of this book. He asked me to review it. (I already own a copy, he should have checked my wish list!!)

But as such generosity cannot be ignored, so here goes!

What do you get when you get this book? (Which I think is out of print ... a bloody shame, since this is a really great book!!)

The author carefully goes through the chess tournaments, (10 great and classic events, London, 1851 & 1883; through San Antonio, 1972); and carefully tells you all about the event. You often get many of the best games, a crosstable, MANY fascinating and entertaining stories ... it IS the next best thing to being there.

There are DOZENS of games in here, carefully and well-annotated, in the style Andy is famous for. The mistakes are made clear, as well as many of the inside stories of the games themselves. (Where he got all this great stuff, I haven't a clue!!)

I have owned this book since 1975 or '76, I practically know it by heart. It is now a great resource, I refer to it often to annotate games.

Can I say anything bad about this book? Not really. The only valid knocks on this book are: A.) It is out of print, and B.) It is in descriptive notation. (Hint to the publisher!)

IF you love chess, and don't have a big library, you will enjoy this book. (IF .. you can get a copy!)

Superb book that chronicles the history of casting.

Netherton's History of Casting is a superb book. I orderedthree which I received yesterday and I'm going to order additionalcopies today. What a wonderful book. I was a former tournament caster, but I don't think you need to be a tournament caster to enjoy this. The reprinted articles are amazing...some of the fly casting distances 90 years ago are unvbelievable since they didn't have the tackle we have today. I learned a lot. It's for anyone who cares about the past, and how casting evolved...the tackle ads are particularly interesting. Great book for anyone's library, even though it"may not tell you how to catch more fish..."
