I bought the Norte and Sur map books a few years ago. They are excellent. Simply the best maps of Baja. Easy to use, a wonderful legend, and I love the book format, no need to fold up the map.

If you can find them, buy them. Especially if you plan on driving Baja.

I purchased the new most current almanac edition 2003 being sold here. It has both Northern and Southern Baja in one almanac, so I don't need two almanacs anymore. This is by far the most up-to-date detailed map of Baja available on the market.

Definately one of the better books on fishing Baja. Well worth getting!

Great book for those who fish or want to fish Baja CA.

This is a really good book that describes what places to go and what to use for specific species. Has a nice layout of knots, and gives pointers on the various popular types of fly tackle used there. Could have included more fly patterns, but being a Baja fisherman myself, it wasn't a setback.

An incredible writer, so far ahead of most contemporary novelists, and yet he lies forgotten. This book will last beyond literature.

The mother of Vietnam war fiction
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-14
The Bamboo Bed was published in 1969. Eastlakes vision of the Vietnam war is dominated by its absurdity. These two facts intertwine to support my summary that the book is the mother of all Vietnam war fiction.

Eastlake, a WWII vet, went to Vietnam and published some dispatches from there for The Nation magazine. His vision of the war as an absurdity long ago became a cliche in fiction and movies, but in 69 it was a revelation.

That alone hardly makes the book great, or even worth reading. What makes it so is wonderful prose and wonderful characters.

I love most of Eastlake's work but I am aware that his (what I call) over the top style is unbearable to some or at least disqualifies his work from being mentioned in the same phrase as literature. I of course disagree. The Bamboo Bed is a landmark of modern American fiction.

Portugal's photographs of Lois Barragan's unique and timeless buildings are some of the best architectural photography I have ever seen. The majority of books on architects destroy the essence and soul of great designs due to poor, cold, and lifeless images. In this book, the images and the buildings within them raise each other to a higher level. Excellent choice for anyone interested in Modernism and Mexican architecture

I really enjoyed Alberts' well researched account of the climactic battle that doomed Southern ambitions in New Mexico and Confederate ambitions in the West. The book is well written and easy to read. Alberts is very familiar with the battlefields and uses maps to show troop positions and movements in the battles in Glorieta Pass. The book includes a good introduction of the campaign and troop movements to the area as well as the aftermath and southern retreat to Southern New Mexico. An Order of Battle and extensive end notes are helpfull and he even gives brief accounts of the fates of the major players in the campaign.

A must-read insight into today's immigration crisis.

Review Date: 2007-10-23
With wry wit and self-effacing humor, Ambassador Jeffrey Davidow's memoir, 'The Bear and the Porcupine,' reveals an intriguing behind-the-scenes story of the leaders on both sides of the border who shaped our current immigration policy. It's an inner-circle look at the bartering, banter, posturing, and power games of U.S. and Mexican politicos including George W. Bush, Vicente Fox, Colin Powell, Madeline Albright, and many others. Along the way, 'The Bear and the Porcupine' gives us a big-picture view on Mexico's ancient culture, quirky politics, and its historically thorny relations with the United States. Refreshingly candid and elegantly written, Ambassador Davidow's memoir is a must-read insight into the political roots of today's immigration crisis.

Also available as Paperback for $24.95

Jeffrey Davidow coined the phrase " the bear and the porcupine"--which has now entered Mexican political discourse--to describe the difficult relationship between the hypersensitive Mexican "porcupine" and the "insensitive" American bear.

In this revised and expanded second edition, Davidow picks up the story of U.S.-Mexico relations since he left his ambassadorial post in 2003, explaining the implications of the Fox administration and the outcome of the 2006 election and reflecting on the volatile immigration issue that has exploded into public debate in the United States.

"A valuable perspective, spiced with poignant humor and sharp criticism that will delight readers" --Publishers Weekly The Bear and the Porcupine:

About Jeffrey Davidow:
Jeffrey Davidow assumed the presidency of the Institute of the Americas on June 1, 2003. After serving thirty-four years in the State Department, he retired as America's highest-ranking diplomat, one of only three people to hold the personal rank of Career Ambassador. During his Foreign Service career, Ambassador Davidow focused much of his efforts on improving relations with Latin America. He served in increasingly senior positions in the U.S. embassies in Guatemala, Chile, and Venezuela, and then later returned to Venezuela as ambassador from 1993 to 1996. From 1996 to 1998, he was the State Department's chief policy maker for the hemisphere, serving in the position of Assistant Secretary of State. He then served as ambassador to Mexico from 1998 to 2002. Initially appointed to that position by President Clinton, he was asked by President Bush to remain in his post for an additional eighteen months. Early in his Foreign Service career, he served as a congressional staff aide in a program organized by the American Political Science Association. In that capacity, he organized in 1979 the first congressional hearings on the possibility of establishing a free trade area for North America.

A Gripping Yarn

Review Date: 2007-10-13
Carlos, who rides the hinge of time into old Mexico as centuries change from the 19th to 20th Century, narrates his story and you soon realize he is a haunted man in a haunted land. He is a young man on a quest, on a search for meaning that leads him to a dwarf, to Chavez, a guerilla chieftain, and to Joaquin Mueller, who abuses the land and its people as he grabs more and more land and power. The times are brutal and they turn Carlos inside out and let him see who he really is, and let him decide if he likes what he sees. Few people get to know how they will measure up in such a time, and you will thrill to a story well-told of a mission that is both raw and emotional.

Stunning and Memorable

I admit that this is a very biased review because I helped W.C. Jameson with the editing on this stunning story. However, Beating the Devil is such a memorable reading experience that no one can go away from this tale without being profoundly touched by young Carlos' adventure deep into the Sierra Madres. This is prose at its best: lyrical, fast paced, and succinct. Though often violent and gut-wrenching the underlying beauty of a man in search of truth, justice, love and himself is a strong and worthy saving grace. I highly recommend this novel without reservation. Laurie Wagner Buyer

Great recreation road map.

This map is great for helping you locate those out of the way gravel roads that are not included on most maps. This is not a good map for city driving. My main dissapointment is that it does not include all of those little lakes in Washington such as all of the seep lakes near Potholes Reservior.

Great "Landscape" Style Maps
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-19
I moved to Washington recently and needed to get some good paper maps of the area. Though I have all the USGS maps of the pacific NW, I find the "landscape" style mapping of these types of maps extremely useful and more up-to-date than many USGS quads. I debated between the well-known Delorme and Benchmark. Benchmark won with better detail, easier to read maps, better recreation details, and the fact they're a Pacific NW company.

This map book has large-format maps for the entire state, US map, a full state map, and a pacific NW map. Map details are complete including roads, "off" roads, trails, mountain elevations, place names, political lines, and others. It also has great sections for recreation (camping, hiking, fishing, local attractions, and others), climate data, and other nice details about the areas. Navigation with GPS is made easy by 7'30" latitude and longitude sections.

I do wish the scale was a little smaller - finding trails and off-the-beaten-path roads can be difficult in particularly busy areas. I also desired more accurate elevation details - the scale seems to clump 8,000' and 14,000' peaks together. Overall, these are excellent maps and should help any outdoor lover find their way.
