This is a very good read. For anyone interested in history, interested in learning about a remarkable woman, interested in just good writing, try this book. Lanyon covers it all including Malinche's seminal importance to Mexican history. The author also explores the development of Malinche as traitor, an idea that many are now taking another look at. It began in the 1800's with an elitist nationalist movement that needed a scapegoat to rally round. At any rate, Malinche's life is one that even the most jaded can marvel at.

Gentle elegy for the bruised woman of Mexican history

For a brief moment in the 16th century, a teenage slave was the most influential woman in the world. Malinche, to use one of her many names, was the translator and go-between in perhaps the pivotal cultural drama of the last millennium - the moment when the Old World represented by Hernan Cortes, conquered the New World in the form of Montezuma's Mexico.

Anna Lanyon, an Australian backpacker, stumbled onto the story of Malinche while travelling in Mexico in the 1970s. Intrigued, she returned home, studied Spanish and Portugese to literary translation level, and revisited Mexico in search of this enigmatic woman.

So few are the clues, and often so contradictory, that Lanyon works like an archeologist with a soft-haired brush to bring Malinche's life into relief from its bedrock of myth.

In official Mexican history, Malinche is the "betrayer". Her name forms the root of a modern-day word for traitor. Lanyon finds a teenager blessed with intelligence, intuition and a sharp instinct for survival. Her options were few. Given as a sexual slave to the conquistadors, Malinche became Cortes's concubine, adviser, and mother of his first child. She died in obscurity, probably before she was 30.

But those close to her admired her. Lanyon makes the point often forgotten in facile renderings of the conquest: to vast numbers of people in what now is Mexico, Montezuma's "Aztecs" (more accurately, the Culua-Mexicans) were the feared and hated enemy. Malinche was therefore not a betrayer so much as a warrior, within her own context. But even more than that, she was a woman, condemned to slavery as a child, "assigned" to alien men when not yet 20, who simply did the best she could.

While the full personality of Malinche may be irretrievable from what history has left us, Lanyon does great work in debunking many of the myths about her and in exploring how national myths come about. And tantalisingly an impression emerges of this accidental figure of history: a woman we would like to have known, a woman from the lowest rungs who took a hand, for better or worse, in changing the world.

In a world of information technology and instant gratification, I admit I skim over books to grasp only the information I need in the least amount of time. In looking for information on Malinche, I didn't think that I was interested in reading about the author's journey in piecing the puzzle together. I just wanted her to get to the point!

I was so wrong! Beautiful story, priceless information, and a rare balance of sensitivity to the subject while maintaining objectivity.

Highly recommended, especially to Latina women.

Thank you, Ms. Lanyon, for your priceless contribution to history.

Loved this Book!

Not only was it great to find a book on Malinche, but also a book that looks at her in a light other than as the evil betrayer we all thought she was. I started the book thinking "How could she have done that?" and ended up feeling sorry for her predicament in life. Or at least understanding why she made the choices she did. This book wasn't just a defense of her actions, but it explained why she became the enemy she has become and who and why made her that way. She was used while she was alive for political purposes and she was manipulated and used for political purposes hundreds of years after her death also.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I have since bought several copies for friends and family members. It is a wonderful look at the way that society views one of the most important women in the Americas in the past 500 years. People are quick to judge her as a traitor or whore, but after reading more about her life as a slave and the conditions around her, I feel that she was an incredible survivor who became the mother of a new generation of people. This book which chronicles Anna Lanyon's journey through Mexico to discover who Malinche was, inspired me to learn more about the Conquest and Mexico's history, as well as more about who the flesh and blood woman "Malinche" might have been. I have since read, "La Malinche in Mexican Literature - From History to Myth", and "The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico" by Bernal Diaz. I recommend it highly.

This book is good, maybe even great, but still can't compare to Melba Levick and Masako Takahashi's AWESOME "Mexicolor". Masako's other book, "Mexican Tiles" comes close, and still edges out "Mexicasa" a little bit as well, so when all is said and done I think I just have to chalk it up to Masako's EVIDENT love and appreciation for the unfathomable beauty of things Mexican. Melba Levick seems to me to see things more from the outside looking in, and without so much PASSION, kind of like a more disinterested spectator than a participant, but that could just be my opinion.

That said, this book is is REALLY NICE. I DO really like it and I highly recommend it- especially if you already own and really liked "Mexicolor" and "Mexican Tiles". Or if you aren't so much into artesanias and Mexican interior design, but are more of an armchair traveler or are interested in actual historic hotels and haciendas.

What Gina Hyams and Melba Levick have created here is a wonderful compilation of photos of 21 of Mexico's most spectacular and beautiful inns and bed & breakfast places.
Melba Levick must have had a ball taking these shots. There's hardly a picture that isn't beautiful in its own right - and there must be at least 300 of them. For this observer, the Mexican talent for blending and matching and mixing colors is the highlight of page after page. We see gardens and patios and pool areas and bedroom and dining areas and a host of living spaces where the eye is simply enchanted by the way the owners of these homes have decorated their various spaces. My own personal favorite is, of all things, a bathroom wall composed of talavera tiles where almost no two tiles on the wall match each other.
All the houses are fully described by Gina Hyams and in most cases she gives us anecdotes and stories about how the various places came about. Thus, for instance, in Hacienda Katanchel in the Yucatan,we read that the present owners discovered the place in 1996. It had been abandoned for 35 years and originally dated back to the 17th century. So what they acquired were 740 acres of dense jungle in which were buried many crumbling buildings with trees growing through walls and ceilings. They gradually cleared the mess away and started building and renovating in a blend of Mexican, Mayan and Spanish styles. And you should see the place now.
On a less ambitious scale, we read about Mesón Sacristia de la Compañia in Puebla. This began as a family-run antique store which the owners turned into a restaurant and then an inn. It has one extra little twist for people who stay there - everything in the place is for sale. The owners are continually having to replace dishes and furniture.
And so the stories go... Pick up a copy and give your coffee table a treat.

You can almost feel the colours and shapes, taste the food and smell the flowers in this lavishly illustrated book on Mexican Haciendas and Hotels. I can see why allot of the people that started these Inns sold everything they had and moved to Mexico to start a new life. This book will be an inspiration to architects and would also make a great coffee table book. Be careful to check the binding when you get it. The glue on mine all fell off in chunks after the first read!

This appears to be an excellent reference guide to a subject shrouded in mystery. As with most issues in Mexico, health care is yet another that benefits by the bright light of knowledge. Fortunately I can say "appears" as I have never had to test the information provided, peace of mind is worth the reasonable cost of the book.

I own a vacation home in Mexico on the Pacific coast and health is something that lurks in the background of every stay. This guide has provided a solid background for all health queries from how the system works to specific physician referrals. Much of the information should be considered as date sensitive and will need to be updated regularly to maintain it's value.

I feel that this is an essential guide for the serious traveller to Mexico. People in reasonable health and very occasional resort travel probably need not bother.

In what normally can be a maze of medical horrors for us gringos on vacation, they have investigated and simplified with easy instructions and directions good, safe medical help. This book is as necessary as packing your toothbrush for a trip. I would hope they eventually get to do a book for other countries for us Americanos.

This is a very thorough, well-researched guide to Mexico-specific travel. I frequently travel to Baja California with church missions teams, and knowing how to get to the best hospitals and clinics (not to mention being able to identify the good v. bad ones) is a tremendous resource. Also serves as a medical field guide, should there be an absence of clinics in your immediate area (or if you need to act before emergency services would arrive...which you would have called in the numbers found through this book!). Very helpful resource.

I had the pleasure of attending a Scott Linquist cooking demo and one of the things made was guacamole. Now guacamole is how I judge a Mexican restaurant. The quality of the guacamole, usually reflects the quality of the rest of the menu. Needless to say I have tasted a lot of guacamole and was prepared to be unimpressed but I have to tell you it was the best guacamole I have ever tasted. On the strength of this alone I bought a copy of his cookbook Mod Mex half expecting the recipes to be intricate and complicated. I was pleasantly surprised to find not only clear easy to follow recipes but also loads of step by step pictures showing the techniques key to making each dish such as how to wrap a tamale properly.

If you love Mexican food this is a great addition to your collection both for it's fresh modern take on classic recipes but also it's detailed pictures of the proper way to prepare them.

Whether you are an armchair traveler or one who has already begun exploring the world, you will appreciate Polly's description and background of the exotic places she and "Husband" visited on their global journey. But more importantly, reading this book is a lesson in the ways to enjoy everything about any country and its people you visit. For her, making friends with fellow travelers, ship personnel, shopkeepers and the locals of each country turns "travel" into a loving adventure. Polly continues from her first book to describe the joy of retirement in Puerto Vallarta. For those who are retired or planning to retire, read this book as an inspiration to find that life begins wherever you are.

Polly Vicars new book is a definite must read for anyone who read her first book and for anyone wondering "what will I do when I retire?". The question I and my spouse (retired four years plus now) are most frequently asked is "what do you do all day?" Well this book gives you a multitude of possible choices for life after work.

Polly and Husband spent close to four months travelling during the winter of 1999 - 2000. Her descriptions of the places they saw, people they met and things they did are fascinating and entertaining. You can easily become an arm chair traveller through her tales of travel. If you have visited any of these places the book is even more special as you relive your own adventures while reading about the Vicars'.

While enjoying an excellent read you can help economically disadvantaged youngsters as all proceeds from the book go the America-Mexico Foundation, Inc. a US tax deductible foundation which provides scholarships to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico students.

Very impressed with this roadmap. Lay-flat design not revolutionary, but a plus for using while driving and unique in roadmaps of this price range. Believe map graphics to be sharper and more clear than venerable Rand map. Two modest negatives: 1)hole punches for binding are a little too close to spirals at front of map, making page detachment a possibility, 2)there is a fold-over flap at the back that lacks real functionality.

If you travel or plan trips, this is the ONLY Atlas you'll need! The level of detail and use of color is a godsend to those of us who have nearly divorced over map navigation on roadmaps rife with omissions. You will NOT get lost - their maps are superb, as we would expect with "National Geographic" in the name. The cover and pages are extra tuff and sturdy -- resisting coffee spills, kids' sticky fingers and being tossed under the front seat. There's a fold-out flap that can wrap around the page you're on - so you can find it quickly when your spouse suddenly panics about that last turn. The spiral lays FLAT - doesn't keep trying to flip closed and won't let heavily used pages pull out. MY favorite feature? I can READ it - without those anNOYING reading glasses I can NEVER find!!!

"Neighbors" is a book I read after living around, and learning the places and people of New Mexico. "Neighbors" does something neat. It transports you to the dirt roads, the yards, the homes of people living simple, straighforward yet spiritual lives in the Southwest. Not unlike "Shiloh", her latest work, Woodruff succeeds with her invitation for you to visit and learn from her story. And a great story "Neighbors" is... Intelligent, entertaining... I like Woodruff's work because it is extremely true to the Southwest - and the people who could possibly be your "Neighbors".

Joan Leslie Woodruff is one of the most refreshing, original voices in current American fiction. Her books rank well in the company of such writers as Barbara Kingsolver and Amy Tan. "Neighbors" is a quirky story, humorous yet spiritually deep. The Native American sensibilities are authentic, derived from the writer's ancestry and her experiences in New Mexico. The heroine, Dana Whitehawk, moves from Los Angeles to New Mexico, where she discovers that some of her 'neighbors' are not ordinary folks. The beauty of Woodruff's tale is in the language. She explores the boundary between magic and reality, leaving readers to make up their own minds about some of the book's questions. Both comparatively short and generally upbeat, "Neighbors" is a good read for someone with a tight schedule who would like a "feel good" book. If you like this one, try "The Shiloh Renewal" -- it's topically different, but told with similar skill.

Enchanting. I couldn't put this book down until I finished.

I received my copy in the mail yesterday and I can't even tell you how impressed i was. The all black and white images of the people, animals and sights of the Yucatan show the character and beauty of the region in a completely different way than I was used to. Rather than relying on the intoxicating colors of the ocean and landscape, the lack of color almost forces you to see the hidden beauty of the Yucatan. The short descriptions under the pictures add yet another dimension to the subjects giving some backround info on what was happening when the images were taken. Truly amazing work.

So, thank you Scott for a wonderfull book...and I hope everyone takes a look at it as well.

I have been to the Yucatan over a dozen times, and I have a love of the area, and especially of the people.
Scott's black and white photography captures the feeling of the Yucatan.
The expressions on the faces of the children show such joy and happiness.
Scott's pictures are breathtaking.

An all-round classic in Black&White

This is the kind of book that you can literally read from cover to cover. The classy black and white photographs in this book tell a tremendous story about the people and the culture of the Yucatan Peninsula, with additional attention to the flora and fauna of this region. Also included is a great section on "Tauromachia", better known as bullfighting in the english speaking world. This book tells a story about everyday life in the Yucatan using black and white photographs for a reason - it allows us to see real life. One of the most haunting photos can be found at the end of the book, where a Matador clearly shows the adrenaline in his facial expression after a bullfight. Highly recommended!

In an age filled with glossy, airbrushed travel brochures it is refreshing to see a different view of the Yucatan as portrayed in Scott Bulger's beautiful work. Although by his own admission, Bulger's ability to speak Spanish is "quite poor", he has spoken of the peninsula through his black and white portraiture. From the smiling and perhaps shy faces of young children to the startling shots of nature and ruins, the true essence of Mayan heritage has been captured. So, toss aside those color-filled brochures and see the real reason to travel into the Yucatan! Eagerly waiting for Mr. Bulger's next effort!

I have bought and read many magazines and books. I have marveled at the glorious colors of the sky and the flowers and the costumes. I am mesmerised by the blue and the brown eyed children. I can't help but love those beautiful landscapes and beautiful sights that are God given.

DO WE NEED TO TAKE A STEP BACK??????

Think about all of the glorious photographs that you have reminisced with your mother or grandmother. Did you look at the flowers or the people in the photos? No because (if you are 40 or so years old) the photos were in black and white. The photos were taken to show the people and the real feelings of the people. Isn't it nice to see the real thing for a change instead of the COLORED up version.

I found Scott's book to open up my taste buds to what they were many years ago and not what they have become. It was a refreshing breathe to what I guess I would like to return to instead of what I have become. I am conditioned to look for the glitter instead of the actuality. I really think that is the time for people to stop and take a quick glance back. I don't think that they will find it all that distasteful.

I enjoyed Scott's book and all of the retrospect that it has given me. I have seen some of his other photos and they make me feel sooooo good

Give yourself a relaxful break and just take a look for youself.

This book had me from the very first page. It is full of intriguing details yet a very easy read. Apodaca creatively uses his expert, first-hand knowledge of the subject matter while embellishing it with fictional cleverness. You won't want to put this book down!

This is a suspense-filled novel with a well-developed plot, real characters, just enough flavor of the Southwest and the law to give it depth. I recommend it to anyone who wants to be absorbed in a good book.

I couldn't put it down.

When I first read this book, I didn't realize how much it would consume me. It was not long at all before I was not able to put it down, anxious to read what would happen next. I have since given this book to many people as a gift and have heard them rave about the excitement built into this action packed book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone whether an avid reader or not.

Rudy Apodaca 'pursues' career as novelist

Cheryl Thornburg ...

'Pursuit'

By Rudy Apodaca

The name Rudy Apodaca is well known to many New Mexicans, but his latest venture could expand that acclaim. The retired Appeals Court judge has embarked on a career as an author, and his novel, "Pursuit," is an action-packed thriller that covers a lot of territory, from Vietnam during the war to present-day Washington, D.C., Athens and Paris.

Apodaca's legal background shows as he methodically sets the stage in the first four chapters for what becomes a fast-paced thriller full of sex, lies, kidnappings and political intrigue.

It is the story of John Garcia, a successful attorney whose career defending large corporate clients is putting a strain on his marriage because of the long hours he puts in.

He is also restless career-wise, and is considering taking a judgeship position that has been offered to him.

Enter the Soliz family, whose son has been accused of attacking a young woman from a prominent family, and Garcia finds himself drawn back into his former role of defense attorney and liking it, much to the chagrin of his wife and business partners.

All the while in the background are lurking two men following Garcia for unknown reasons. It is when their identity and purpose is revealed that the novel really takes off.

The plots and subplots in this novel will keep the reader involved, and Apodaca's legal expertise shows in the courtroom scenes that ring true.

The Santa Fe and Albuquerque settings will feel comfortable to New Mexicans, and the far-flung other locations provide the exotic element called for in this genre. ...
