Brainquest Canada is a great product to not only keep your children entertained, but have them learn at the same time - without them even knowing it! The trivia questions will also show most parents that it is not just kids who have a lot to learn about Canada. A must for anyone with children.

Brook Trout and Blackflies: A Paddler's Guide to Algonquin Park

The last word was every bit as incredible as the first...WOW! That Brookie on the cover would hit the spot right now... I'm pretty hungry... unfortunately it's only an image printed on paper... not very satisfying or tasty for that matter. The main thing you need to know about this book is that it's ultimately just a bunch of words on paper; like most other books. And hidden beneath this thin veil of "outdoor writing" is really just a silly lesson in Yin and Yang philosophy, as the words of the book depend upon and are largely defined by the Old Growth Forest paper that they are printed upon. And vice versa. Whatever. Spend some money. Check it out. You might be disappointed... then again, you just might not. Besides, everyone needs an extra book or two to fill those annoying gaps that appear in your bookcases when somebody pulls out another book to read, or to slap a fly with, or to use as a temporary, mobile writing platform. Happy reading!

Great guide/storybook combo

Callan's a great storyteller, but this is not just a storybook. He's a great guide, but this is not just a guidebook. Callan beautifully combines the two worlds in BT&BF to lend the reader a guidebook with stories that whet the appetite for an Algonquin trip. Callan gives the reader several options for weekend or week-long trips in the park and spices the descriptions up with his great storytelling ability. The only drawback is the lack of an index where one could compare trip length, difficulty, etc. in a table format instead of having to leaf back and forth through the book, but don't let that dissuade you. This is an excellent resource for the Algonquin canoeist.

Must-Read for Today's Business Executive and Shareholders Alike
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-31
With the increased scrutiny on company accounting practices, executive compensation, and the Board's role in setting strategy, this book on corporate governance is an extremely timely and important one. The authors thoughtfully detail the issues Boards face, how best to work with CEOs and plan for their successor, and develop strategies for effective leadership. There's even a section on Boards for companies outside the U.S., which I found extremely valuable.

For anyone interested in how Boards work and the steps they need to take going forward (and I think any shareholder should be), this is essential reading. Highly recommended.

This is a superb book. Comprehensive and well-written, it addresses a vitally important topic with innovative ideas and practical solutions. In a field increasing crowded with prescriptions for solving the dilemmas of corporate governance, Building Better Boards stands out as a book worth reading.

A Blessing to Gaelic Learners and Singers
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-27
I concur 1000% with the reviewer from Alexandria, and would only add that some of these songs include verses lost in Scotland! Some are over 300 years old, and in the archaic bardic tradition. No serious Gaelic learner, scholar, or singer can afford to pass this gem up!

I personally knew and learned from a number of the people recorded (all alas gone now!). John Neil, Angus Ranald, and Christine Gillis, and Mae MacGillivray, (the children of Sandy Seumus and Maggie Sarah Gillis), and the many other great folks from Gillisdale and elsewhere in Inverness County, the Mabou area, and other places in Cape Breton Island and Nova Scotia.

These people were among the kindest, warmest, and most generous people on earth, and always willing to help a learner along. I had many pleasant and happy hours in their company.

The late Ms. Creighton, and the late Major Calum Iain N. Macleod did the Gaelic world an invaluable service with their work!

Among my personal favorites is "Alasdair mhic Cholla Gasda" (Alasdair Son of Gallant Coll) a MacDonald brosnachadh (battle incitement) in the form of an orain luaidh (waulking song) celebrating the deeds of Alasdair MacDonald (aka Colkitto) who was Montrose's brilliant and bold Lieutenant General in the "Year of Miracles" during the Covenanter and Civil Wars in Scotland in the 1640s. This song memorializes the great victory at Inverlochy when the forces of Alasdair and Montrose smashed the Campbells.

Again, a must-have for serious Gaelic scholars of any level!

An indispensible book for Gaelic student or musician.

"Gaelic Songs in Nova Scotia" contains a great store of Gaelic songs from Scotland and from Nova Scotia, including some not available in print anywhere else. Each song is accompanied by a direct translation in English. There are more than 200 songs in the book. Many of the songs illuminate the experience of the Highland emigrant in eastern Canada. Some of my favorites, "An té a chaill a Gàidhlig (the woman who lost her Gaelic)" and "Oran a' Mhathain (the bear's song)." The first is an attack on those who quickly traded their Gaelic for English after moving "to town," and the second is the story of a bear-hunt, from the bear's perspective. Many classic songs from Scotland are included as well. Cape Breton singers preserved these songs for five generations. Many songs forgotten in Scotland remained popular in Cape Breton. The songs represent almost the entire Gaelic repetoire, running the gamut from love songs and laments to topical songs and waulking (work) songs. The music is in standard notation, rather than the sol-fa notation used (unfortunately) by many Gaelic music books. This is a seminal text and a must-buy for the serious student of Scottish Gaelic language, literature, music and history. Note: This book is also extremely difficult to find in bookstores. -- Liam O Caiside

This Children's book was mine and my brothers favorite one to be read at night, it has stories and poems like 'The Owl and the Pussycat' and 'Winken, Blinken and Nod'. It has the most wonderful pictures, they ingrave themselves on your sleepy eyelids and your little one will have nothing but sweet dreams. Now I have a daughter, and a son on the way and would love to share this experience with them, but my brother has already lay claim to our one childhood copy!

This book was a favorite of my husband when he was a little boy....it was a nightly ritual for each of our four children. Now we are awaiting the birth of our first grandchild and this is the first gift we will purchase for him (or her?). The beautiful art work in this book will live in a child's imagination forever. Classic tales are meant to be read with a child snuggled on your lap!If you like this book be sure to check out "The Gateway to Storyland" also a Platt & Monk classic.

A Fantastic work and a pleasure to read the History of a forgotten area of history, the American Revolution as it happened in New York state. Very well documented, good selection of paintings, modern photographs and maps of the region. The indices are unquestionably the most complete that I have ever seen.

I highly reccommend this book to anyone who is interested in the late 18 th Century and the American Revolution.

Eugenio Andrade paid $100 for this book. Although it may have not been worth that amount of money, if you can find this book at a reasonable price, by all means do so! Especially if you are a fan of buses, an automobile or heavy equipment fan, or simpy want to do alittle research on buses, this is a must have! I have had the opportunity to obtain books published recently on buses. With not alot out there published on the subject of buses, with emphasis given more to popular trains, streetcars, cars, trucks, and even farm tractors, this should be included in any transportation or bus fan's library.

After 1044 pages, 813 black and white photographs, 194 color photographs, 165 line drawings, and 135 distribution maps, cacti lovers will have no problems finding their favorite cacti in the wild or getting background on their systematics. This is a wonderful book, and one can never tire of perusing its contents. It is rich with information and an excellent introduction for those readers first entering the exotic world of cacti. Some of the most interesting parts of the book include: 1. The use of the scanning electron microscope to study surface patterns of cacti. Students of botany will realize that correlating the fine structure of cacti with taxonomy would be an interesting research project. 2. The root system of the Opuntia echinocarpa cholla. 3. The metabolism of cacti: the Craseulacean acid metabolism which allows closing of the stomata during the day. 4. The chemical chracters of cacti, particularly the use of two-dimensional chromatograms. 5. The evolutionary relationships within the family of cacti. 6. The role of asexual reproduction in promoting the survival of hybrids in chollas and prickly pears.
The book will no doubt serve as an excellent reference book in many years to come.

This book is just the greatest! If you care for animals you need this book! It's talking about how HUMANS treat animals (and ultimately each other). And humans CAN think, reason, and have compassion. Let me quote Ghandi, "We err in copying the lower animal world - if we are superior to it." To paraphrase Charles Darwin, our differences are that of degree rather than kind. To this end, we must as a society grapple with unconscionably exploitative features of our relationship with the animal kingdom.

Within the contexts of feminism, racism, speciesism, classism, and vegetarianism, the author lucidly demonstrates how our culture and language (re)define and (re)inforce a great feeling of satisfaction at the sport of bull riding and some of the better known riders. It also includes some really great pictures!

Having been a bull rider for 5 years I found the book so good that everything he was writing about, I could see it clearly in my mind. I know the riders so well that it was amazing how easily he put the characters and their characteristics into words that were so descriptive and easy for any reader to get a clear picture of them in their own mind.

Best nonfiction book about cowboys and showgirls and all-night trips down dusty highways. But buy it, and many copies of it, because you will want your friends to experience its cinematic poignancy after the movie in your head ends. I encourage English teachers to consider this in a curricula on rodeo writing. It is lasting stuff.
