Sets the Standard for regimental histories

Outstanding, from the colour photo section, to the detailed appendices, and the "war manual" for those not versed in WW II military terminology or practices (this is helpful for civilian and current soldier alike, as much has changed in 50 years). The book is solidly researched from primary sources, lavishly illustrated with photographs from personal collections, and contains many personal stories and reminiscences. The darker chapters (two men being drummed out of the regiment for raping a Dutch woman) are given equal time with the regiment's loftier achievements. A great book about Canadian tankers in WW II and a must read for anyone interested in the Canadian Armoured Corps in WW II, or Canadian soldiers at war in general. Thank you Mister Graves for setting the standard.

Donald Graves has broken new ground in that he has written what constitutes - without qualification - what is simply the finest regimental history ever to see print. He blends perfectly the veterans' experience with detailed historical research, and supplements the package with hundreds of original photographs and superb line drawings of everything from the tanks themselves to local campaign maps. His appendices are the best I have ever seen.

Regardless of the depth of your prior knowledge of the Canadians in WW2, finishing Graves' SOUTH ALBERTAS will leave you awestruck, wishing for more. I would hope that this author and others might consider similar, follow-up works on other Canadian regiments, while the veterans are still with us; there can be no greater tribute to their sacrifices. Other, popular histories are but a pale imitation.

A must read for anyone with an interest in WW II

Donald Graves has written the book by which any small unit history will have to be measured in the future. At the risk of repeating what Michael wrote - the book contains a most impressive narrative of all the actions of this regiment, including the full treatment of the celebrated stand at St. Lambert-sur-Dive that won the only VC for the Canadian Armoured Corps, and it is lavishly illustrated, with photos and maps explaining the situation on the ground. Donald Graves' writing is concise, to the point, and very successful in bringing the story to life. The most touching point is the identification of every single casualty of the regiment by name, their pre-war occupation, age and family status, setting a memorial for the men. As someone with a strong interest in the Commonwealth military of WW II I found this a superbly done book, teaching me more about the way things were then for the men fighting than any other book I have read. It is well worth any cent it costs, and I hope it will stay available for a time to come.

Quirky but real. As a Canadian from the same era I can totally relate to what he describes. A really great book to give to Americans to explain who we Canadian really are.

So, what constitutes 'Canadian culture' and elements of Canada? From notorious plastics which take twice as long to decompose to a special kind of screw and driver used only in Canada, there's a host of oddities uniquely Canadian which Douglas Coupland here sets out to capture visually and in text description. A hilarious, pointed set of true observations, all backed with color photos.

Clearly Canadian (and better than the first!)

This SECOND collection of imagery and musings from Famous Canadian Writer Douglas Coupland didn't always strike a chord with me. I'm from a different part of the country, with different history and experiences, of course.

Yet enough was oddly, eerily familiar to convince me that there are few young writers better qualified to comment on the State of Our Nation than Coupland. Not as enjoyable as his fiction, but something fun to tide us fans over while we wait!

I enjoyed this quirky collection, particularly Coupland's Canadian House installation art, more than the first. The images seemed fresher and his intelligent commentary was just as enjoyable. Keep 'em coming!

Great book. Seemed to be written from an objective view point - and I really appreciate that. I came away from this book with a better understanding of Prime Minister Harper and a better hope for the future of Canada.

this book was originally assigned to me for a Canadian politics class, but I never got around to reading it until after I graduated. It's a solid book - it really portrays the leadership style of Stephen Harper in the context of an ever-contentious Canadian political history. Johnson does a superb job of displaying Harper as a leader unrivaled in his vision for Canada. For Americans like myself, it's a great book to gain a better grasp on major Canadian political issues such as regionalism, Constitutional politics, and of course, Quebec separatism, among others. Go for it!

No Hidden Agenda

Review Date: 2005-07-10
This is a well-written book, full of anecdotes and about an interesting subject. Many people claim that Stephen Harper has a "hidden agenda" but when reading about his life, it is easy to see a consistency in vision and a steadfast dedication to making Canada a better place for all Canadians, not just the political elite. Mr. Harper is brilliant and that comes out loud and clear in this unauthorized biography. Mr. Harper also is clearly a man with integrity and honesty. That greatest asset is also his biggest handicap, because Canadians are so used to the "what's in it for me?" style of politics that they have trouble understanding the integrity of Mr. Harper. I hope his critics will take the time to read this excellent book.

hands down one of the greatest books ever written about canadian politics. rick mercer's incredible wit and vast political understanding really make it just so laugh-out-loud funny. i love his rants. i'm glad he's continued on with them for his new show 'monday report'. hopefully there will be another book on those as well! these are exciting times, and for rick it's like the playoff season that just won't quit.

read this book, it's good for you.

This book is a reprise of Mr. Mercer's "rants" on "This Hour Has 22 Minutes". For those of you who lack the good fortune to have access to the show, I highly recommend this book. For those of you who are fans of the show, this book should be added to your collection.

"Streeters" is a must-have for anyone with an appreciation of political humour, be it Canadian or otherwise. A mandatory item for anyone seeking to understand the Canadian psyche, this book gets the point across via a unique combination of keen political insight and an extraordinary command of common Canadian prose.

Stop reading and buy the ... thing!

Another fantastic book by Elizabeth, I would reccomend this to anyone with teens at home. This Author really knows what teens go through, she taps into their true emotions and shows both positive and negative ways of dealing with problems. This is a great book especially for young girls falling in love for the first time. Many of us remember our first kiss as well as our first summer romance and that last kiss of that summer. Thanks for another great book. It brought back some great memories.

This is a wonderful book for teens, written from the male point of view it brings new light to the typical teen novels. This endearing story of young love, really brings to light the problems young men have coping with their feelings as well a pressure from their peers in school. I applaud Elizabeth for taking the time to write a book from this angle. I wish more Authors did. I would reccomend this book to anyone with a teenage son or daughter.

This is the best guide to home gardening I have seen, combining ease of use with authoritative information. The brief notes are to the point, the photographs are excellent, information is easy to find, and the full entries are exceptionally well done. A pleasure to read, this work will surely become the standard reference on home gardening.

More than just a guide, a resource for every gardener.

Despite the books' massively long title, it's actually an easy-to-read, well organized reference guide to plant selection, propagation, care and maintenance, as well listing of hundreds of plants. Like many Taylor's guides, this one is profusely illustrated with lovely photographs of plants that will not only inform, but inspire you to get gardening. Almost 350 pages in length, there's not a lot of filler in here, rather, it's packed with lists, glossaries, appendices that will answer most questions any beginning and most intermediate gardeners might have in regards to perennials, annuals, shrubs, flowering trees and vines. If you want to landscape your garden and not sure of what plants to work with, you may want to start here!

I have many good gardening books but this is the one I refer to constantly and suggest to my friends. Arranged alphabetically, the mini-chapter on each plant contains all the information I need to make decisions on purchasing, choosing a site, planting, growing tips, and propagating. The final section in each chapter suggests companion plants that mix well and like the same conditions. To top it off, this is a beautiful book with excellent photographs of the entire plant in its natural surrounding. GET THIS BOOK.

I was lucky to take Mr. Hioki's courses in telecommunications using his textbook at CCSN, in Las Vegas, NV.. His book was a great source understanding the world of electronics applied in telecommunications. Many of the new emerging technologies such as wireless communications, internet, fiber optics, are covered in great detail. He also has a great chapter dedicated to modems. Mr. Hioki manages to bring light without appearing to blind its readers. He abstains of giving the mathematical formulas, although for those savy with numbers won't be dissapointed. His book is gear to junior college student or those with a background in electronics.

Elyse Friedman's novel Then Again is one of those all too rare creatures: an impeccably written literary novel that's funny as hell. It's also extremely moving in parts. Friedman's prose has style, punch, and inventiveness. This book is worth reading just for the story of the poodle ("nature's most perfect food," it was invented in 1872 by Otto Van Plotsberg, apparently). But the bigger issues are where this novel is at -- the characters range from the banal to the grotesque, and the dialogue is brilliant. Fans of the smart and the offbeat will dig this rectangle.

An interesting perspective on Canadian politics in the latter part of the twentieth century. Preston Manning's bitingly honest take on Canadian politics, the Reform Party, his own leadership and the lack thereof in the Liberal Party provide food for thought. And I'm still chewing. It will make you think, make you reexamine what you thought you knew. It is not what I expected - a rant against the Liberals - but rather is an insightful and thought provoking treatsie on Canadian politics, our responsibilities to democracy and his own experiences. It's fresh and disarming. I highly recommend it to even the staunchest Liberal.

Manning, the Canadian Reformer

Review Date: 2003-09-22
Preston Manning was one of Canada's most important politicians is the late twentieth century. The movement he started emphasizing admirable ideals such as direct democracy and greatly improved ethics legislation was necessary for Canada at a time when cronyism, political patronage and constant conflicts of interest were the order of the day. Also, he pushed for more fiscal accountability after the Mulroney\Trudeau era of careless government spending. Moreover, Manning represented the interests of Western Canada, which was feeling increasingly alienated under the contemptible watch of Pierre Trudeau and later on Brian Mulroney.
All of his admirable initiatives are chronicled in his intriguing autobiography. He discusses what his initiatives were and what brought them about. He also tries to justify his controversial votes in the House of Commons, like when he voted against hate-crime legislation. I really enjoyed reading a book that discussed the life of a man who so greatly changed the Canadian political landscape.
I hope you read this book and enjoy it!
All of his admirable initiatives are chronicled in his intruiging autobigraphy.

Review Date: 2002-12-15
Preston Manning writes an open, honest, and mostly unguarded retrospective and prospective look at his political life and Canada's political landscape. I read "The New Canada" many years ago, and it was an obvious vehicle for the Reform Party's advancement, whose purpose seemed to be dispelling rumours and giving people a more honest look at Prairie Populism and gives a brief autobiography. This tome, however, is written by a man without ambitions for votes, or realizing that what he writes could hold himself responsible for the political futures of hundreds of candidates, staff, etc.

I think when he got his haircut in '97, he trimmed the geekiness too, although he maintains that he was never a geek. (He actually says, "geek". Priceless.) He refers to Ron Jeremy as a burned out NHL hockey star who agreed with every point he made on "Off the Record". (I watched that OTR performance. You could just see Manning's uneasiness sitting beside him, although he was very gracious. Even shook his hand. Yekh.) He had a suggested conference for Liberal ethics, in which lunchtime entertainment would be "Jean Chretien sing[ing] an ethical rendition of "I Did it My Way" with Bill Clinton accompaning on saxophone." (Earlier in the conference, Bill Clinton was a guest ethical lecturer with a special seminar for parliamentary interns.)

I appreciate his unguardedness, as he is even quite blunt in describing Stephen Harper. He tears what's left of Stockwell Day apart, blasting him for using his Christianity as a weapon against non-evangelicals. I thought he also developed a good theology of Christian political action in this book. In the past, he would used extended Arminian analogies about Jesus not forcing his will upon anyone, and the cleansing of the Temple narratives as examples of Christian intermingling with politics, etc. In this book he is more detailed and builds more of a solid case of proper Christian political activism, based on Christians influencing politics as salt and light on an individual basis as opposed to organized corporate bases. He challenges Christians to act out their faith seriously, but not to allow the churches to be dragged down to the level of political action groups, or political parties become tools of churches. I would actually like to have him write a strictly theological work developing a theology of holiness, that is, how we are to be not of this world, but separate from it for the purpose of calling the world to reconciliation to God through Christ. I think he could do much damage to the idea that we are Christians in church on Sunday, but our Christianity should get left at the door when we leave. He could also do much damage to bumper-sticker Christianity, and call for a deeper and more genuine life. (He's CM&A, I'm sure he's read Tozer.)

Anyhow, I read this book in one sitting. It's more honest, and thus engaging work than the New Canada. I would recommend it as a book to friend or foe of Preston Manning or the Canadian Alliance.
