Perhaps youre not the slaughtering kindReview Date: 2000-04-07
To think that the morse were just a side-show to it all. To think that eventually, with the same energy and relentless mechanical force, we would come to decimate the northern fishery more or less entirely, leaving thousands of perplexed fisher folk stranded in coastal villages, wondering perhaps, just where that many fish could possibly have gone.
On land, as in the water, nature's bounty was scarcely less prolific, the European's first reaction, scarcely less horrendous. Could this be the true, unknown history of North America, lying behind and directly concerning those early pilots and navigators like Cabot and Columbus. 400 or more years of unbelievably short-sighted culling of mighty herds, whether they were whales or bison or a hundred other species of birds and mammals known to have been hunted to the last. This is Mowat's sad chronicle. This is his portrait of what one day perhaps, will generally be known and accepted as history. And the only thing that may stop us is that we find we really don't want to ever learn this sort of truth.
Besides being a remarkable contribution to the literature of ecology and environment, this is also one of Mowat's finest personal efforts. You can see by the very nature of the material that it took a being of remarkable strength just to tackle a project like this, let alone bring it to a conclusion. It's probably true that one can prepare all one's life for just one event. In Mowat's case, without negating any other part of his remarkable œuvre, this may just be it.

Idries Shah on 'The Key of Solomon' and moreReview Date: 2000-01-03
This book is truly a treasure-house when it comes to esoteric material and I can only recommend it.
But I will also draw attention to some of I. Shahs other books, for instance "Learning How to Learn" and "The Sufis".
Sourcebook of the GrimoiresReview Date: 2006-05-23
The book *is* hard to find, and has been removed from all of Shah's booklists that i can find. It has become, in its own right, a hidden and forbidden volume. If you can find it, it remains unmatched for all-in-one-place lore.

'Odds, Bobs, Hammer, and Tongs'Review Date: 2000-08-24
Two quickly built naval squadrons, getting men and material for sailor and ships from wherever they could, fought each other to literal annihilation for the loser, and great strategic gains for the victor. Two talented naval officers, Briton Robert H. barclay, and American Oliver Hazard Perry, built their small fleets, manned them with whatever came along (in Perry's case 'a motley set, blacks, soldiers, and boys', including a Marine officer who was given his choice of a court-martial or serving on the northwest frontier-he was later killed in action in the battle, quite gallantly taking his death wound leading his men), and set sail to settle the fate of Lake Erie and its surrounding territory.
The authors tell their tale with wit, verve, and aplomb, from the different characters to the ships and the men that manned them. This volume definitely has the smell of gunpowder about it and is meticulously researched and very well-written. It is highly recommeded both as a valued addition to the literature of the period and a book than can stand on its own.

Ever wonder about those geese up there?Review Date: 2008-05-29
The lovely black and white drawings provide the perfect mood for the text and goings on in the story. I loved this story. I could not put this book down 'til I was done.

One of the best novels ever written about geese!Review Date: 2008-04-25
These lines are spoken by a one-eyed heron who has enlisted a flock of five out of shape suburban pond geese to help him migrate south. It is from a wonderful new book Skylar by Mary Cuffe-Perez.
Skylar is the story of five Canada geese who live an idyllic life as resident geese at a suburban man-made pond. However, these geese are envious of the wild geese that they observe migrating each fall. They have an opportunity to emulate their wild cousins when a lost one-eyed heron arrives at their pond and seeks aid in migrating.
Each of the five suburban geese has a unique and interesting personality. Readers will both laugh and cry as they follow the journey of the five Canada geese and the one-eyed heron. Although the book is marketed for young readers, everyone who reads it will love it. With the possible exception of Mel Ellis' extraordinary Wild Goose, Brother Goose this is the best novel ever written about geese.
