My wife and I purchased this book to search for a ranch vacation. It has been on our coffee table ever since. There are about 200 pages worth of color pictures. Some of these resorts are just beautiful. We can't wait to actually go on our vacation. This book has been great in helping us plan our trip.

Fantastic, realistic guide for ranch vacationing!

Amy the nightowl stayed awake to watch the Late Show. Then the Late, Late Show. Then the Late, Late, Late Show. THEN she watched the Early, Early, Early, Early Show. FINALLY, she went to bed.

You can imagine the consequences of this: she couldn't wake up the next day. Her family tries to wake her up (her brother even blows her hair off her face with the volume of his voice), but to no avail. What to do?? Brother has to go to school & mom and dad have to go to work, she can't stay home! So, they take her to school in her bed!

Now the fun REALLY begins!! Her teacher can't get her to wake up, no matter how loudly she bellows. She doesn't wake up through gym. She doesn't wake up through lunch. She doesn't even wake up through recess!! Finally, she's carted off back home in her bed where she sleeps through the night.

You can imagine what happens when she comes to school the NEXT day!!

Robert Munsch has written over 20 books, including the very popular "Love You Forever". His fun, fast-paced style will hold readers' interest as well as the bright, fun illustrations by Alan & Lea Daniel, the husband and wife team who have illustrated other works by Munsch.

The illustrations will rope readers in as quickly as the story when they see the teacher teaching reading in Amy's bed (the students hold a copy of "Get Out of Bed!" themselves, creating a fun reflection-in-the-mirror effect that sharp-eyed readers will love), Amy's nose being painted during art class, and the wonderful paintings of Amy's teacher trying to WAKE THAT GIRL UP!!

For any child who is a night owl (or, at least not an early bird) this book is a must.

Gift of Wings is perhaps the most powerful and inspiring of the hundreds of books I've read. The fascinating story of a wheelchair traded for wings on 5000 miles journey across Canada. Breathtaking and surprisingly original aerial photographs of a stunningly diversified landscape . Beautiful, philosophical, witty, poetic and joyful. A book with a soul that is sure to touch yours.

Carl Hiebert has freed not only himself but all those who feel the handicap of wingless birth, to soar and glide through the beautiful spaciousness of Canada. The fascinating story of his injury and recovery of spirit to leave the wheel chair behind as he climbed into the skys of Canada with camera in hand, will forever challenge and delight me, an aviator and current healer of injured bodies and minds. "Breathtaking" is a real understatement for this story of beauty

Unbelievable, a great gift!!!

This book will be a great addition to any F1 fans collection. I personally am a huge Gilles fan to this day, and continue to be saddened that we never got to see more of this most unique racer. I started watching him race Alouette snowmobiles and followed him with great interest throughout his auto racing career, and believe we will never see the likes of such a talent again. He certainly was a once in a lifetime thing. I believe I have every book that has ever been published about Gilles, and rank this right up near the top of my collection. There are some pictures in this book that I have never seen before, which to me makes it worth the price all by it self. Nigel Roebuck is a great writer of F1, and does a great job on this book of bringing the history back to life. I really enjoyed it, and am sure you will too.

It's already 26 years since Gilles died in action but he is still remembered depite the fact that he never was a world champion. He just didn't lived long enough to do so. Villeneuve is the living proof that numbers don't really matter when it came to the greatness of a driver. I remembered very well a visit at Maranello, the Ferrari factory near Modena in 1999. Michael Schumacher was the new god for Ferrari but as I strolled through the town, all I saw was pictures of Gilles Villeneuve and very few of Schumacher. Gilles Villeneuve is a living legend in Italy, a sort of icon with his scarlett Ferrari No 27.His famous battle with René Arnoux during the French Grand prix of 1979 in Dijon is probably the most spectacular piece of driving exitement ever !So, if you are a fan of Gilles Villeneuve, this is just the best photographic book done about his racing career that I ever saw. Rush for it ! Long live Gilles !

Simply brilliant

If you believe, as I do, that Gilles Villeneuve was the greatest driver of all time, then this book is a must. The photos are all of excellent quality, and there is just enough written information to keep you informed. This book, however, is aimed at those of us who know of Gilles exploits already, and of the tragedy of his untimely passing. Therefore it is all about enjoying the visual aspect of his exploits behind the wheel of racing cars, and remebering his brilliance.

Long recognized as the master teacher to all the teachers who are now so famous on tv, Jacobs here has a mighty instruction book.

Based on his revolutionary idea of ball flight feedback, one can easily find what pattern one's shots are taking, then apply the remedies listed for that ailment.

His two turns and a swing is so simple, but profound. If there is one swing thought I fall back on, this is it. Jacobs concepts are so easy to follow and apply. Soon it will seem as though one can diagnose on the spot and correct.

Monumental classic which more golfers could benefit from using.

Excellent book! As an avid golfer, I've always had to tinker with my swing mechanics on an almost weekly basis to maintain my game. One quick lesson from this book, which simply suggested changing ball position (and offering an explanation of why) was the perfect fix. Now I am long and straight and loving it! I've been loaning the book to friends and telling them to quit paying for worthless lessons.

Tips for Jacobs' fans

After knowing about Jacobs, I searched the web for some material. I ordered Golf Doctor,Practical Golf and all the video series. Jacobs' main concept is that, whatever you think or do, the main reality of golf is the effect and trajectory you give the ball when you hit it with the face of your club. Thus, analising the flight of the ball, you should be able to know what you did wrong. Beatiful concept! No wonder Jacobs' approach to golf has granted him a legion of followers. Not too silly, nor too technical, it's effective!

Here is my advise:

-BUY BOTH.- To get the core concepts from Jacobs, you can avoid buyin the new "50 lessons" book if you prefer so, but I suggest you to buy Practical Golf together with Golf Doctor, so that you have a general reference book (Practical golf), and a guide for any ball flight (Golf Doctor).
-TRY TO GET THE VIDEOS.- They will save you throusands of dollars in lessons! They are simple and wise and you can feel the teaching approach of the master himself! I do not find the "short game" video as good as the Wfull swing" one, wich is a masterpiece. Get as well the faults and correction ones.

From the very first page Luard captivates the reader with his vivid and passionate portrayal of royal intrigue and sheer adventure. The tale begins in ancient Abyssinia where the queen of the nile is impregnated via sinister and mysterious means. She lives in affluent splendour among lust and savagery. In a neighbouring kingdom, the author invites us to witness the kidnapping of the royal twins Toomi and Mamkinga. As Luard's intricate tapestry unfolds, we follow the twins' separation and painfully unjust descent into slavery. Their journeys are wrought with countless horrific events embedded in the constant longing each twin feels for being reunited with the other half of their being. Powerful and viscious figures forever loom in the shadows of this richly depicited tale, including the brutal arab Acab Saat, who is to be the dagger that attempts to shred the very fabric of Africa's kingdoms. Throughout Luard's epic we also delve into the faraway shores of Ireland, where Jamie Oran surpasses his devastating past to venture into Africa, and finds his destiny at the source of the nile.

Luard has a talent for relentlessly drawing the reader into the story until they gasp for breath, eyes bulging in wonderment at the brutality humankind is capable of in the context of this historical and cultural landscape. At times i was convinced that Luard must have lived in Africa to write with such vision and complexity about this exotic realm. Although the journey extends from Africa to the United Kingdom, Luard is consistent in the integrity and resilience that is found in our heroes, and the same demonic cruelty in our villains. His statements about human nature are constant: insecurity and lust make for a dangerous combination. The characters' heartwrenching struggles are upsetting in their realism, yet are essential components of Luard's image of an epic battle for freedom and love.

I also had the wonderful opportunity to meet and learn from James this past October 2008 in Ohio. His uplifting, joyous personality makes everyone shine (Children and adults in his workshop). I highly recommend this book for beginners and experienced models. It is easy to follow, exciting and informative. He has worked in and around about every aspect of the business and really enjoys sharing his knowledge with others. What a wealth of information he has to share in his book and in person at his workshops! Thanks James for making the workshop a pleasure to attend for my young daughter! The book is SUPER, I am so happy that I purchased it! I have recommended it to many of my friends already!

I had the great pleasure of meeting the author, attending his extradinary modeling seminars and even got a fashion shoot from him. He is an excellent speaker and writer and knows exactly what it takes to be a model. His seminar on how to pose for photographs is the absolute greatest source for print modeling information and I know he goes over it in the book a bit. Mr. Pentaudi should also consider a book on public speaking. If you can get your hands on this book I highly recomend it for anyone who wants to work in any aspect of fashion having to deal with modeling.

"Henry hears the honking first. He circles the pond, around and a half, sending up splashes of warm spring mud all over his winter coat. Henry knows the geese are coming. And then I know it, too..." This is the best time of year for our young narrator, as the Canada geese arrive back at her family's pond, each spring. But this year she notices one of the geese has a badly injured foot, and when she visits the pond the next day, the goose's foot is gone. There she stands all alone, separated from the rest of the flock. The other geese have shunned her. "I never thought geese could be so mean." The little girl wants to take care of the poor footless goose, feed her, pet her, be her friend, but her mother and father warn her not to. "A wild goose has to learn to live with her weakness. Or she won't live at all." As the summer slides towards autumn, the little girl notices that the goose has grown stronger and more capable. It can balance and hobble on its stump, search for food, and swim. But she still worries that the goose won't be strong enough to push off and fly south for the winter, and will be left behind to die. And then one day when she comes home from school, all the geese are gone, and so is her little crippled friend. The winter months pass and the girl thinks often of the goose, and then one spring day, soon after she spots the first robin, she hears the familiar honking. "They land together. A couple of geese. Honking and flapping. Drinking and bathing. Combing each other's feathers. One is larger than the other, his neck as thick as a fire hose when he stretches it out to protect her-the goose with one foot..." Inspired by an actual event, Cari Best's touching and captivating story, as seen through the eyes of a grade school girl, is filled with drama, courage, determination, and triumph. Her engaging and evocative text is complemented by Holly Meade's bold and vibrant paper collage illustrations, that bring the wonders and wildness of nature to life. And together, word and art paint a vivid, empathetic, and uplifting portrait of an unlikely and endearing heroine. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Goose's Story is a heartwarming tale of nature and survival, and is definitely one of the best new picture books of 2002.

No Armchair Historian

Review Date: 2005-08-10
Mark Thompson is a scholar and a sailor. He has also been, in his lifetime, a soldier and a legislator. He is an honest, articulate man with a probing mind. He is also a raconteur with a fine sense of humor. Mark brings all this, and more, to his writing.

The shipwrecks described in GRAVEYARD OF THE LAKES are, in a sense, the exceptions that prove the rule. That is, for every shipwreck or foundering, there are hundreds if not thousands of successfully completed commercial voyages on the Great Lakes. By describing the wrecks and the tragedies and looking to discern overall patterns, we learn what keeps voyages from becoming wrecks and tragedies -- even if it is only not to let hubris reach critical mass.

Mark is no armchair historian. He knows firsthand whereof he writes. In this, of course, there is risk of not having adequate perspective. But in Mark's case, in my opinion, his nearness to his subject, particularly when writing of events which yet are in living memory, is what makes his writing incisive.

I have been, even recently, a shipmate of Mark Thompson. He and I, always in good humor, never lose an opportunity to point out each other's flaws. But I have no flaw to mention in regard to this book. Mark provides both an overall understanding of Great Lakes shipping and a specific understanding of day-to-day details. I highly recommend GRAVEYARD OF THE LAKES to anyone interested in Great Lakes shipping and its history.

Review Date: 2002-06-26
Although many books have been written about Great Lakes shipwrecks, Thompson's book offers a new perspective by analyzing the causes of wrecks on a large scale. One can see the various factors that made the Lakes particularly dangerous to navigators throughout their history. Thompson's research is equally impressive. Unlike many other books of the genre, Thompson has actually consulted, in most cases, primary archival sources, in developing his wreck accounts, rather than simply rehashing the work of other authors. Thompson's presentation avoids dry regurgitation of statistics and details through an accessible and entertaining writing style that makes the book a better read than similar books on the subject. Although the book is not comprehensive and contains a few forgiveable historical errors, it remains one of the best books on Great Lakes shipwrecks to come out in recent years.

This is really a great lighthouse book. It has beautiful pictures and a lot of information about the history of over 600 lighthouses of the Great Lakes. It even has information on lost lighthouses such the Kalamazoo River Light near Saugatuck, Michigan. I know of no other book which has more comprehensive coverage of all of the Great Lakes lights and has it all in one volume. And my copy was a real bargain purchased a lower price here than any of the bookstores in my area.
